Obituary Preview: Born March 7, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois, Michael Anthony Watkins, Sr. is the eldest son of J.B and Margaret Watkins.
Michael Sr. received his education in the Chicago Public School System (Harlan High School) and was very active singing in the chorus. He went on to study at Moody Bible Institute focusing on the New and Old Testament scriptures. He was a skilled painter with diverse background and experience in home rehabilitation, remodeling, and owned several real estate properties.
Michael Sr. worked in the hotel maintenance management industry for 15 years at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago-Alsip, worked as an independent contractor for the Uber ridesharing company, and held previous employment as a US Messenger carrier, SCR medical transport driver, veterinary diagnostic lab specimens and supplies transport carrier delivering to various surrounding northwest suburban locations.
Michael Sr and family joined Robert’s Temple C.O.G.I.C. in the late 1960’s, under the pastorage of the late Bishop Isaiah Roberts. In 1975, Michael Sr and family joined the Evangelistic Crusaders (EC) C.O.G.I.C., under the leadership of Pastor George Liggins, where he accepted Christ as his personal Savior. Michael Sr was a longtime faithful member of EC C.O.G.I.C. During his time at EC, he held multiple positions in the ministry from lead choir director and singer to his elevation to deacon to minister and then to elder. In 2003, God called him to the pastorate where he founded Gift of Help (GH) Ministries (inspired by 1 Corinthians 12:28). To this day, this ministry continues. its mission of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, winning souls for Christ with love and compassion, helping, and giving back to others. GH Ministries continues to edify and glorify God in all things, foundationally stand on God’s word with a core focus on applying biblical principles to everyday life. Also, providing encouragement and empowerment to the people locally, nationally and around the world. Michael Sr was married to Arletrice Watkins, and two beloved sons were born from this union, Michael Anthony Watkins Jr and Matthew Alan Watkins. Nabisco Cookie Company in 1994. Joy married James Leroy Dunlap on July 5, 1958, to this union for sons were born; James Jr. “Jimmy”, Anthony “Tony”, Alonzo “Zo”, and Dwayne. James Sr.,
James Jr., and Anthony preceded Joy in death. Joy accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior early in life. Joy joined Shilaoh Baptist Church. Joy was an avid member of the church choir. Joy’s final church home was as member of Trinity United Church of Christ under the tutelage of the
Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Joy loved to rollerskate and was a main fixture at the Park City and Savoy skating rinks on Sunday afternoons. Joy also enjoyed going to the movies. She was often accompanied to the show by her little brother Chris. Sundays were often spent at the world famous Regal Theater watching the performances of some of the Motown greats, such as “Little Stevie” Wonder and Smokey Robinson. Joy was also known far and wide for her annual Christmas Eve Parties. It’s been said, that gifts were stacked to the ceiling! Joy later enjoyed cruising and traveling. Joy took
great pride in traveling to see her brother, Chris and his family.
Joy departed the life on February 11, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
Joy’s oldest brother, Henry Jr. preceded her in death in 1996. Joy leaves to cherish her memory her two sons; Alonzo and Dwayne (Aisha); her eleven grandchildren; Jasmine, Jason (Lakesha), Krystal (Carl), Christopher (Gabrielle), Melody, Ashley (Kenneth), Avery, Natassia (Rudy), Chanel (Tyrell),
