Rene Desany - July 25, 1942 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Melrose)
Obituary Preview: Rene James Desany passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024 in his home in Melrose, MA.
Rene was born July 25, 1942, the third oldest of seven boys, to Joseph and Mary Anne (Rainville) Desany in Colchester, VT. After graduation from Rice Memorial High School in 1960, he enlisted in the Air National Guard and went on to complete basic training at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado in 1962.
When his initial enlistment completed in 1966, he moved west to work at Hewlett-Packard in Colorado and Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. In 1969, he returned to Burlington, Vermont to work for Simmons Precision and Air North as an Avionics Technician. Shortly afterwards, he met his lovely wife, Barbara Bouchard, and they married in October, 1971 at Holy Cross Church in Colchester, VT, and initially settled in Essex, Vermont. Their first-born child, Nicholas, was born on Christmas Day in 1972, and a year and a half later, their son, Matthew, was born in July, 1974. In November, 1989, Rene and Barbara welcomed their surprise youngest child, Monique into the Desany fold. After the family moved from Essex to Jericho, Vermont in 1984, Rene returned to the Vermont Air National Guard until his retirement in 2002 as a Master Sergeant.
During his teen years, Rene developed a love of Ham Radio: which included building his own radio equipment and talking to various people around the world (long before the internet and cell phones made it easy!). This passion continued into his adulthood as he worked on his own ham radio projects at home as well as becoming well known for his avionics trouble shooting, finding some of the toughest problems in the many, diverse electronic systems of the F-16 flown by the Vermont Air National Guard. He was known affectionately by his co-workers as “electro-man” and “the badger.” A little gruff on the outside, but he knew how to get the job done! After retirement, Rene continued to work on radios and developed a love for classic cars. Never one to sit for long, he always tried to keep himself busy.
Preceding Rene in death are his father and mother, Joseph and Mary Anne Desany and his brother, Andrew.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Desany, and his siblings Anthony, Joseph, Gerry, Peter, and Edmond Desany, as well as his 3 children, Nick Desany, Matt Desany, and Monique Desany Martell. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Joseph , Anthony, Francis, Elizabeth, Amara, Beatrice, Augustine, Molly, Winston, and Penny.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St Mary of the Annunciation Church in Melrose, MA on April 17th at 10am.

Judith Q. Sullivan - May 01, 1962 - April 10, 2024

Departed: 04/10/2024 (Melrose)
Obituary Preview: IN LOVING MEMORY OF JUDITH QUINN SULLIVAN (1962-2024)
Remembering Judith Quinn Sullivan, known fondly as Judi, is an honor because of all the wonderful things she accomplished in her lifetime. Born in Hagerstown, MD, but truly raised in Mercersburg, PA, Judi held her roots close to her heart, nestled among the Tuscarora Hills. Her parents, Joan and John "Jay" Quinn, instilled in her a love for learning and a passion for preserving history.
Judi's educational journey took her through Mercersburg Academy, where her father taught, to Trinity College in Washington D.C. for her bachelor’s degree in Art History, then on to the University of Delaware for her Masters. She didn't stop there, pursuing a second Masters in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. Her love for learning was matched only by her desire to share it.
Judi entered the workforce with the Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. Her career as an architectural historian with the National Park Service was more than a job; it was her calling. Judi dedicated herself to researching, evaluating, and restoring historical structures along the East Coast. Judi had a unique passion for uncovering the personal stories behind historic sites such as the “Revolutionary Battle Road” park in Lexington / Concord. Judi didn’t just see bricks and mortar; she saw these structures as vessels of history, carrying the memories and lives of the people who inhabited them.
She wasn't one to shy away from hard work, often found with a deed in one hand and a hard hat in the other, working alongside construction crews to preserve our nation’s cultural treasures.
Melrose, MA, became her cherished home, where she immersed herself in community service. Whether it was serving on the Historic District Commission or advocating fiercely for preserving Melrose's historical and architectural uniqueness, Judi was always at the forefront. Her devotion extended to St. Mary’s Church and School, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, organized initiatives like first communion dress drives for families in need, and editing the school newsletter. At the end of her working career, she enjoyed her time at the Melrose Public Library with the “book crew”.
Judi was a creative and loving mother who delighted in planning imaginative birthday parties for her children, complete with elaborate themes like fierce dragons, medieval knights, and local monsters. Her passion for creativity extended to her love for themes such as Monet painting, colonial butter churning, and kids tea parties, as well as camping and monkey-themed celebrations with banana splits. Never missing the small details, even the invitations were planned to fit the theme: for a science party it came in a test tube, and for an art party it was an artist’s pallet.
Beyond party planning, Judi was an avid reader, with her book club pals, who could finish a book in just two days. She had a deep appreciation for museums and historical houses, often knowing more than the guides themselves. She enjoyed antique crafts like card making and building toys for her children. She was the magic of any holiday season, decorating thoughtfully with attention to detail and always having hand-made cards ready for loved ones.
Despite her busy schedule, Judi never missed any of her children's ice hockey games, showing her unwavering support for her family's activities. She also had a love for sangria, polka dots, the Boston Bruins, and indulging in treats like apple pie, and peppermint stick flavored ice cream. Her passion for life's joys and thoughtful gestures made her a cherished presence in her family and community.
Judi's legacy of kindness and dedication lives on through her family: her husband Christopher J. Sullivan, her son Christopher J. Sullivan Jr., and her daughters Molly Q. Sullivan and Rowan M. Sullivan of Melrose, MA. Judi will forever be in the hearts of her sister Ann Angel, niece Isabelle, nephews Connor, Griffin and sister Ruth Quinn, nieces Clare and Olivia, of Baltimore, Maryland and her brother John L. Quinn, nephews John Lewis and Owen of Alexandria Virginia, sister in law Lynn Moran, nieces Marguerite Moran and Katia Moran of Bristol, RI, nephew Tito Pena of Washington, DC, sister in law Abigail Moore, nephew Carlos Moore of West Hartford, CT, nephew Jack Moore of New York City, NY, brother in law James M. Sullivan, nephew James M. Sullivan, Jr. and niece Hope Sullivan of Arlington, VA.
To honor her memory, in lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations to be made in her name to St. Mary’s of the Annunciation School in Melrose, MA, or the Fendrick Library in Mercersburg, PA.
Judi may have left us after her long battle with cancer, but her impact on her community and the hearts she touched will remain forever.
A wake will be held in her honor at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster Street, Melrose, MA on Thursday, April 18 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM . A funeral mass will be held at Saint Mary’s of the Annunciation Church, 4 Herbert Street, Melrose, on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Wakefield.

Rosemarie Katherine (DiMeo) Keefe - June 06, 1934 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Melrose)
Obituary Preview: Rosemarie Katherine DiMeo Keefe, of Medford, MA, passed to spirit peacefully in her home on April 5, 2024 at the age of 89 surrounded by her loved ones in the place that she loved.
The youngest of 3 children, Rosemarie was born in the historic West End of Boston on June 6, 1934. She was born to immigrant parents from Catignano, Province of Pescara, Region of Abruzzo and San Giorgio Ionico, Province of Taranto, Region of Puglia in Italy. Her early childhood was one of struggling and thriving in the multiculturual, depression-era, immigrant community that was Boston in the 1930’s. Her parents were ambitious and tireless working people -- her father a construction worker and stone mason, and her mother, a seamstress and an early member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. Her parents opened a neighborhood grocery store on Staniford Street before the beginning of World War II where Rosemarie often worked after school. She moved to the Italian neighborhood of South Medford with her family at the age of 12 in 1946 and graduated from Medford High School in 1952. Her childhood was filled with the joys of family life and she had a host of friends that she cherished for her entire life.
Following High School, she studied art at the Butera School of Art and worked as an operator at the Bell Telephone Company of Boston. A lover of pranks and practical jokes, she often told the story of how she and her fellow operators were bored during a shift in the early 1950’s and started placing calls to famous celebrities. They made contact with former President Harry Truman in Independence, MO who was kind and generous and carried on a friendly conversation with Rosemarie and her co-workers. A life-long and dedicated Democrat, President Truman was to become her favorite President.
Rosemarie married Mr. Anthony Bucci, also of Medford, in 1957 and gave birth to children Grace in 1959 and Anthony in 1962. She applied her talent and training in art working for a photo processing company and continued her training in architectural drafting. She joined her brothers’ architectural firm, DiMeo Associates, in 1967 and worked in the field of architectural and engineering drafting for over 20 years. In 1992, she joined the Development Staff at Tufts University as Matching Gifts Coordinator and retired in 2005.
Rosemarie courageously ended an abusive marriage and moved to Stoneham in 1967 with her children and mother where she independently purchased her first home. In 1971, she met and fell in love with Mr. George B. Keefe of Brighton, MA and they were married in 1972. They joined their blended family of 5 children together in Stoneham, and remained happily married until George’s passing in 2003. Those years were filled with the joys and challenges of parenting, career growth, travel, caring for her aging mother, and building a vacation home on the White River in Bethel, Vermont where George enjoyed hunting with his sons. Rosemarie enjoyed many weekends with family and friends playing cards and having fun in the Vermont countryside.
Rosemarie’s life was one of love, kindness, and compassion. Always dedicated to family and friends, she cared for her aging mother until her death in 1988; and for her beloved daughter Grace during her battle with cancer that ended with her passing in 2004. Rosemarie and George moved to a condominium that Rosemarie helped to design in Medford in 1989 and Rosemarie cared for her beloved husband until his passing in 2003.
Rosemarie adored her grandchildren and played an active role in their growing up years. She suffered a severe spinal cord stroke in 2016 that left her confined to a wheelchair and she returned to her home in Medford after a long period of treatment and rehabilitiation determined to live as independently as possible, often with her renowned stubborness. Despite the hardships of living with a serious disability, she never lost her humor, energy, and love for life. She enjoyed her final days living on her own terms surrounded by the things and the people she loved, rarely missing a televised Red Sox game during baseball season. And she particularly enjoyed frequent trips to the Casino with her son Anthony. Among her life-long interests were music, art, film, theater, and politics, and she was a social justice advocate fiercely dedicated to womens’ rights. Rosemarie received long-term, loving care from Personal Care Assistants Ms. Dorothy Maina, Ms. Karen Mullins, Ms. Laura Freitas, Ms. Karen Zumpfe and Ms. Carla Rania. Rosemarie’s family is also grateful to Tufts Care at Home Hospice for their kind and compasionate end of life care.
Rosemarie is pre-deceased by her father, Franco DiMeo (1898-1959), her mother, Natalia Maria Cassiano DiMeo (1900-1988), her brother, Frank DiMeo (1931-1987), her daughter, Grace Bucci (1959-2005), her huband George B. Keefe (1924-2003), her grandaughter and the light of her life, State Trooper Tamar A. Bucci (1988 – 2022) who was tragically killed in the line of duty on March 4, 2022, and grandson Ryan P. Bucci (1978-1980).
She is survived by her beloved son, Mr. Anthony J. Bucci of Medford and his partner, Ms. Nataly Garcia, her brother, Mr. Peter DiMeo of North Reading, MA, her beloved sister-in-law, Ms. Betsy DiMeo of Beverly, MA, niece, Ms. Gina DiMeo Harrison and husband Larry Harrison and their son Benjamin Harrison of Beverly, nephew Mr. Stephen DiMeo of Melrose, nephew Mr. Christopher DiMeo and husband Robert Saoud of Woburn and their son, Nickolas Saoud-DiMeo of Medford, her niece, Ms. Wendy DiMeo Golini of Melrose and her children, Mr. David Golini and Mr. Thomas Golini, both of Melrose; grandchildren, Mr. Dante A. Robert J. Santo - August 01, 1934 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Melrose)
Obituary Preview: Robert J. Santo passed away at 89 years of age. He loved his wife, family, Beloved husband of Marjorie M. Santo (Hall) (deceased) of Melrose. Loving father of Stephen P. Santo (Charlene) of Brockton, Nancy L. Ambrosino (Anthony) of Middleton, Sandra J. Santo of Melrose, and Robert C. Santo (Bridgette) of Manchester. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Bob was a man of many passions. He loved his wife, family, walking the beach with Margie, horseracing and boxing. He was an avid storyteller, sharing stories of his life with everyone. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob loved people, coming alive when he was deep in conversation with someone, or when in front of a crowd. His charisma and outgoing personality was extended to everyone; friends, colleagues, neighbors, cashiers, servers, caregivers, or someone passing by. Bob prided himself on his incredible memory, remembering details from events long ago.
Bob put family first always. He and Margie loved when their house was full of family and friends. Margie would cook and Bob would tell his stories. Bob was married to Margie for 62 years. Since her passing he has often quoted the poem, “Tomorrow Never Comes”, reminding everyone to hold their loved ones close. He continued to tell his stories, but most of them were about his loving wife as his heart was broken beyond repair. Theirs was a true love story. May Bob’s stories never be forgotten, or the love they shared.
Bob was most appreciative of the education provided to him by the Xaverian Brothers of Malden Catholic. For that reason, Bob chose to remember Malden Catholic in his estate, providing a generous bequest to the school, in order to make possible the “MC experience” for future students and families.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He will always be remembered as a man of great integrity who loved his family above all.
Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM with funeral services immediately following in the funeral home at 12:00 PM. Marie José Blazej - December 20, 1928 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Melrose)
Obituary Preview: Marie José Blazej, 95 Lived Life to its Fullest with Strong Convictions
MELROSE – Marie José (Michiels) Blazej passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024. Marie José, who preferred to be known as José, was born on December 20, 1928 in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Belgium. She was the second of three children of the late Charles Michiels and Jeanne (Buelens) Michiels. She was raised in Moortebeek, a cité-jardin on the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium. Despite the hardships of life during WWII she managed to complete her schooling while excelling in math and found work in accounting. After the liberation of Belgium she met the love of her life, Richard T. Blazej, an American soldier, at a street fair in Anderlecht. At the age of 18 she flew on one of the first transatlantic commercial flights to NY to marry Richard and to begin their life together on Long Island for 70 years. Although she lived most of her life in the USA, she was a proud Belgian who always enjoyed finding others with whom she could speak French. It was fortunate for her that her son Tom married Virginie, a French woman!
Her early years as a homemaker kept her busy raising a family. She regularly met up with her French club where she made lifelong friendships, some of which she was still in contact with until her passing. José enjoyed volunteering and getting involved in many community activities including PTA, the Church, Cub Scouts, etc. When she found a cause that needed addressing, she was the first in line to raise questions and challenge authority. Her proudest moment was blocking LILCO, the local utility from installing dangerous transmission lines through her neighborhood.
After the family moved to Northport, New York, José found an opportunity to resume her accounting skills which eventually lead to the ownership of a seafood restaurant – The Sea Shanty, which she ran for 20 years. It was very popular with locals and visitors for the excellent food, great service, and fair prices. She was proud of the opportunities she provided for local youth with their first jobs, and immigrants from El Salvador to build their lives in Northport.
José loved reading, listening to music, dancing, laughing and staying in touch with family and friends through FaceBook, email and texting. Special memories were formed every summer when the family went to the family cottage in Ontario. Later, to continue this tradition she put substantial energy and resources into creating the family camp at Tunk Lake, Maine. She and Richard travelled after retirement and especially enjoyed National Parks along with her childhood friend Charles from Brussels. Despite living through the hardships of occupied Belgium, Richard’s PTSD struggles, and the loss of three children (Michael 1948-1950, Suzanne 1958-1960, and Thomas 1961 for 2 days) she persevered and lived a full life and never stopped fighting for what she believed in.
She was a beacon of unwavering commitment to political and social justice, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and guide future generations through her family and friends. Throughout her remarkable life, José was dedicated to championing the causes that lay at the heart of civil fairness and the needs of working families. She remained perpetually informed on the breaking issues that shaped our world, understanding deeply how political shifts and policies impacted society. Her legacy is not just in the causes she supported but in the lives she changed, the community she helped build on Long Island, and the love she spread through her fight for a fairer world.
José is survived by four children and their families; Dan Blazej and his children Michael and Laura; Ken Blazej with his wife Barbara and their children Nanda, Kerri and Lindsy; Tom Blazej with his wife Virginie and their children Lucy and Julia; Jeanne (Blazej) Melhado with her husband David and their children Ashlee and Samuel; and five great-grandchildren; Mathilde, Benny, Leona, Zia and Liliana.
Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday, March 30, 2024, from 10AM-12:00PM, followed by a memorial service at the funeral home at 12:00PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend.
