Joseph Daniel Hickman - March 24, 1980 - January 13, 2022

Departed: 01/13/2022 (Garrison)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Daniel Hickman, 41, formerly of Garrison, passed away on January 13, 2022 in The Woodlands.
Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
Joseph Hickman was born on March 24, 1980 in Winnie, Texas.  He grew up as any boy did, learning to love being outside.  His adoptive parents, James and Mylia, welcomed him with open arms at the age of 6 and taught him as much as possible about how to take care of himself and to put others first.  They attended church regularly and Joseph took every opportunity he could to be outside.  As he grew into his teenage years, he also learned how to drive, and just as all teenage boys do, he drove fast!  Joseph was a graduate of Garrison High School and spent many days and evenings with the friends he made through the years as a Garrison Bulldog.  He was very talented with most any instrument he picked up and magically could play “by ear”.  His love of being outdoors surpassed any other thing he did and it was always his job to get on the tractor and bail the hay.  After high school, he was blessed with the birth of his two boys, Jayson and Skylar.  This was something he talked about regularly and he loved them.  The choices Joseph made in life drove him far from his family and he most recently settled in the Conroe area.  His sudden passing, although hard for family members and friends to wrap their mind around after his absence, will always bring up the memories from his younger years and the sweetness they knew was in his heart.  His infectious smile as a youngster will continue to be a permanent memory in the hearts and minds of those who loved him the most.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his parents, James and Mylia Hickman; son, Skylar Hickman; brothers, Justin Hickman and Kevin Strawbridge & wife, Mammie; sisters, Heather West & husband, Troy, Heagan Bass & husband, Derick, Courtney Gilooley & husband, Mike, Rachel Davis and Brittany Puchot & husband, Drew.  He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other family members and friends who will surely feel a void knowing he is no longer here living his life.
Joseph is preceded in death by his son, Jayson Hickman.

Frederick Bielicki - December 31, 1969 - January 10, 2022

Departed: 01/10/2022 (Garrison)
Obituary Preview: Fred Bielicki was a man who would call you a friend after knowing you for a minute. He was born on July 13, 1966 in Buffalo, New York, and spent every waking moment filling his surroundings with excitement and love. It was this love that caught the eye of his beloved wife and server, Gwendolyn, at Kerby's Koney Island. Their love story began with a "bacon double cheeseburger with a side of chili fries and the biggest f****** coke you got" and is survived by the couples' thrill for finding exhilarating experiences to share, taste-testing new food and drink, and bird watching— especially eagle watching. He will be missed terribly by his daughters, Sarah and her husband Jon, Hannah, Brittany, and their partners. Fred was also awarded the title of "World's Best Papa" by his granddaughter, Artemis. He now holds the additional honor of "World's Best Guardian Angel."
Fred had the Eye of the Tiger. He boxed with the Manistee Boxing Club where he placed first in his weight class at the Golden Gloves Championship. True to his nature, he became a lifelong fighter for those he loved— his friends, family, and Union Brothers. He moved with Gwendolyn and Sarah from Manistee, Michigan to Chicago, Illinois where he began his career with the Union, Laborers Local 225 before moving to Crowne Point, Indiana where his youngest daughter Hannah was born. Wanting to live closer to the city and friends, he picked up his family and moved to the South Side of Chicago where he opened his home to his third daughter, Brittany. After twenty-five years, with a heart full of hopes and dreams of building a home on family land, he packed up a trailer and moved to Garrison, Texas. Having lived there for only a short time surrounded by his siblings– Lori, Paul, Dusti, and Gigi, and many nieces and nephews– he cleared land, made friends, traveled East Texas sampling local IPA's, and unpacked all the love he carried with him along the way— sharing his nature of constant positivity and contagious laughter.
Known as someone who smiled with his whole face, he wore his heart and interests on his sleeve. His wardrobe represented his love for the Steelers, the Blackhawks, and his loyalty to his Union Brothers. He was frequently spotted at Nascar tracks, floating in his pool while blasting music from his "Man Cave", and making neighbors his family. He was known for throwing the best parties such as "Fred Fest", "Lobster Fest", pool parties, and "Soup Swaps".
How does one summarize Fred Bielicki? It's impossible. Fred was more than a few words and paragraphs. He was so much to so many people. He was there for you when you needed him, never asking for anything in return. He didn't think twice about helping others. Seeing your posts online or talking to you over the phone made his day. Fred was the kind of guy who "always knew your name."
He will be missed. He will be loved, always. And he will be with you in spirit the next time you raise a glass. Cheers to you, Fred!
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Gwendolyn Bielicki; daughters, Sarah Noell Darkwood, Brittany Harris and Hannah Adell Bielicki; sons-in-law, Jon Darkwood and Alex Hara; granddaughter, Artemis Grace Darkwood; and siblings, Lori Wells, Travis Bielicki, Dusti Alden and Gigi Williams.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Cynthia Matson and grandmother, Ruby Curry.
The family will be "Celebrating the Legacy of Fred Bielicki" from 11am - 5pm on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at Garrison Funeral Home and again on Friday, January 21, 2022 from 11am - 5pm.

Martha Lou Garrett - February 01, 1931 - November 10, 2021

Departed: 11/10/2021 (Garrison)
Obituary Preview: Funeral services for Martha Lou Garrett, 90, of Garrison will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Garrison Funeral Home with Shak Arrington officiating.  Interment will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00pm – 7:00pm on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Garrison Funeral Home.  Mrs. Garrett passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in Garrison.
Martha Lou Carroll was born on February 1, 1931, the daughter of Delphia Eugene and Annie Lee Shipp Carroll and raised in the only place she ever called home…Garrison, Texas.  Her roots run deep in “The Oldest Town in Texas” and as a proud 1947 graduate, she was a devoted Bulldog.  Martha happily remained here until she left her earthly home for the perfect place made for her in Heaven.  If you asked her, Martha would tell you Garrison was the closest thing you could get to Heaven.
In 1948, she and Tommie Garrett were joined in marriage.  They spent an almost perfect 50 years together and raised their children with the greatest of values.  Martha Lou loved Tommie without regrets and without boundaries and was proud to call him her husband.  She was a supporter to everyone around her, no matter what they were attempting to accomplish.  Family was very important and she strived to be the wife, mother, grandmother and friend that everyone needed.  Her love of children led her to being “Lou Lou” to many young-uns who spent years in her home as she kept them daily.  She even found the time to share her heart with “Foster Grandparents”, an organization where she was able to mentor and volunteer with children at local schools.  She was also an incredible special aunt to her beloved nieces and nephews.  Martha, although constantly putting Jesus and her family above all else, found immense joy in cooking.  She was fantastic at it and never failed to share her favorite recipes with anyone who asked. She enjoyed playing 42 and Skip-Bo and was especially admired for her beautiful flower gardens.  When her favorite Texas teams were playing, (Astros and Cowboys of course) she would be found cheering them on as often as she could.  With Tommie, traveling was the one thing that took them away from all the hustle and bustle of life itself.  They saw many places together and made lasting memories that they both dearly cherished.  She will be missed by her precious children and grandchildren but her devotion and love of all those around her will forever be remembered.
Martha Lou is survived by her children, Dale Garrett and wife, Sharon of Mineral Wells, Lennie Sawyer and husband, Buz of Livingston, Felecia Lloyd and husband, George of Garrison and Carrie Faulkner and husband, David of Humble; grandchildren, Matthew Garrett & wife Jessica of Fort Worth, Stephen Garrett and wife, Kati of Austin, Garrett Driver and wife, Allison of Humble and Christopher Lloyd of Garrison; great grandchildren, Logan Bell-Johnson, Morgan Garrett, Hazel Garrett, Charlie Garrett, Halden Driver and future baby boy Driver; sister, Opaline Barnhart of Nacogdoches; sister-in-law, Eva Carroll of Nacogdoches; numerous nieces and nephews; her devoted angel-on-earth, Jan Holmes as well as her beloved dog, Lance.

Otto "Skip" Moulder - September 29, 1955 - September 13, 2021

Departed: 09/13/2021 (Garrison)
Obituary Preview: Graveside service for Otto Moulder, 65, of Garrison, will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Cold Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at Garrison Funeral Home with Ched Spellman and Justin McCorkle officiating.
Otto “Skip” Moulder was born in Houston on September 29, 1955, to parents, Emmitt and Gwen Moulder in Splendora, Texas. He lived in the home of his parents until his retirement. From an early age Skip showed a tendency to order, consistency, and the ability to design and work with his hands. Once when young his sister snuck into his room and changed the order of his toys. He noticed immediately and was so frustrated at the disruption!
Skip married Alecia Hearnsberger on January 1, 1981, at 25 years old. Together they produced two daughters, Kelly and Leigh Anne. Skip devoted himself to family and was a tender, consistent servant to his daughters. Leigh fondly remembers Skip’s consistency to come home every day to focus on her events and take her to karate. Kelly knew that Skip would be there to play “tiger” and give rides on his back daily.
Skip worked at ExxonMobil for many years as a machinist. During his years there he was offered numerous promotions which Skip was uninterested in taking. He said that moving up would take him away from home too much and bring too much stress.
His machining skills came home with him where he could often be found tinkering in his shop on various projects or ideas. No lawn mower was ever too broken to lose its potential for spare parts.
Skip was most often the only dad who went on field trips with his girls as a chaperone. He would always get stuck taking the boys to the restroom, which he found to be disgusting. However, it was well worth the inconvenience to ensure that his girls were safe. He would later build bonds with many young men who came around to court his daughters. They found an open home, company to watch boxing matches, and a man willing to engage in deep history or just friendly conversations.
Alecia knew that her husband was a man of simple tastes and desires. He was happy to be home with family and wouldn’t even allow Alecia to purchase him new shirts or shoes. He would wear the same shoes until they wore out and would only grudgingly replace them. Despite having the ability to drive what he wanted, it wasn’t until 2016 that he purchased his first new truck at the prodding of his family.
In his final years, he retired to Garrison, Texas and did exactly and only what he wanted to do, making sure to enjoy his retirement. He built a place he loved and wanted to spend his time with the people he loves, especially his grandchildren. He gave himself to hobbies such as remote-control cars in order to indulge his grandson, Jackson.
Skip was taken from his family far too early due to Covid-19. Nevertheless, his tender love, the safety he provided, and his frugal focus on providing for his family ensure that he will continue caring for them all for years to come. No children or grandchildren have ever been more loved than Skip’s.
Skip is survived by his wife, Alecia Moulder; his children, Ched and Leigh Anne Spellman and Justin and Kelly McCorkle; his beloved grandchildren, Hope, Kate, Luke, and Claire Spellman and Jackson, Avy, and Ila McCorkle.
Skip is preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Gwen Moulder and his sister, Ella Goines.
Pallbearers for the service will be Justin McCorkle, Ched Spellman, Jackson McCorkle, Jason Squier, John Squier, Vance Vaughn, and Brode Chamberlain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also assist in writing and publishing obituaries as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, occupation or achievements, and names of surviving family members. It may also mention hobbies, interests, or charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. Aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos or other multimedia elements to accompany the written notice.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do so during a difficult time.

Is it okay to include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the person who has passed. Including humorous anecdotes or quirky traits can make the notice more engaging and memorable.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites, contacting local libraries or historical societies, or reaching out to relatives who may have kept a copy of the obituary.

Can I republish an obituary on social media or my personal website?

Check with the original publisher (newspaper or online platform) for permission before republishing an obituary. You may need to obtain copyright clearance or provide proper attribution.

What is a death notice versus an obituary?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, this is a common practice. Specify the charity or organization you'd like donations to be made to in memory of the deceased.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?
