Joseph Patrick Collins - March 22, 1931 - November 02, 2022

Departed: 11/02/2022 (Missoula)
Obituary Preview: The remarkable 91 years of Joseph Patrick Collins came to an end on November 2nd as surrounded by family and friends, we said goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and good friend to so many.
He was born in Queens, New York to William and Carolyn Collins (nee Thomas) and where he developed his story for 45 years before moving on to St. Louis, retiring to Polson, with a final move to Missoula.
He was one of five children, growing up in Middle Village, Queens. He enjoyed a good game of stick ball or stoop ball and helping his parents. Dad attended Chaminade High School on Long Island, one of his many accomplishments and was a proud Alumni. He loved conversations with anyone of the Chaminade system. Joe studied business and retail at New York University night school while he worked during the day for JC Penney (to his last days he could still name the JC Penney store number if you mentioned a city that had one). He moved up from a buyer position through the ranks to becoming an executive and was hired by the Kellwood Company, with this promotion, the family moved to St. Louis. He served first as Corporate Vice President for Kellwood Company, and then, President and CEO of the Ashley’s Outlet division, with over 150 stores; he ran Ashley for 12 years before his “retirement”.
His next years in retirement would be spent doing what would turn out to be some of his best work, helping those who needed assistance with financial planning. He began this second career by planning out his own father’s financial plan, then for a dear friend Phyllis and her family. This changed the course of the rest of his life. Once word got out, he would be introduced to many friends, and those that would become dear friends. They benefited from his vast knowledge of the ability to write a good working budget and spending analysis! Spending analysis was his favorite term and was a passion he loved until the very end.
Dad and Mom were married September 24, 1955 and were together almost 62 years prior to Grace’s death in 2017. We have tremendous memories of being raised as family of six. We, as children and into adulthood were blessed by their love, understanding, and guidance; they were role models as to how to live. Their family grew to having 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren with number 13 arriving in 2023. We had some amazing times in Lake George every summer, where Dad spent countless hours behind the wheel of his beloved wooden boat he had built with a neighbor from Massapequa Park. Dad pulled water skiers until everyone had a chance to ski. Dad and Mom made hundreds of friends over the years, and everyone enjoyed good times with Joe and Gracie on Wilson St, Shoreham Rd, Agusta Dr, and Mission Bay Drive.
Dad was a constant learner and hard worker, always reading to better his knowledge. These were traits he was passed on from his parents and in turn passed on to all of us. We always admired him for his willingness to give to others who needed help and make sure everyone had what they needed. Dad did not just give monetarily to dozens of foundations and non-profits over the years, he rolled up his sleeves and often joined in with Mom to volunteer for those in need. After Grace passed, he continued to volunteer into his 80’s for the Ronald McDonald House in Missoula with their campaigns.
Giving to others was so incredibly important to Dad. He loved watching golf, football, hockey, and baseball, and anytime you went into the house he was always up to date on the stats and ready to share them with you.
Joe was truly a man with a heart of gold and the strength of a lion who fought to live, but it was time for him to go back to Mom and the whole crew of loved ones in heaven.
Dad was preceded in death by his wife Grace of almost 62 years, his daughter-in-law Bernadette Collins, son-in-law Russ McKinnon, brothers Willie and Gerry, and sister Colette.
He is survived by his sister Bernadette Maurer, brother-in-law Robert Weiner, children Moe (Carson) Coryell, Kevin Collins (Margaret), Tim (Susan) Collins, and Katy McKinnon, plus his grandchildren Michelle (JJ), Mike (Heidi), Maggie (Luke), Noelle (Mark), Stuart (Annie), Alli (Erik), Meagan (Noah), and Rian. His 12 (almost 13 -player to be named later) great grandchildren, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dad we will honor the incredible life you lived, remember the love you were always willing to give, and everything you taught us about being eager to learn and help others. We Love You and Thank You.
A special Thank You to his longtime physician Dr. Caldwell, his many home health workers, notably Precious who bonded with “Mr. Joe” in the last few weeks of his life, and especially to our sister Moe who gave up her own life to care for every need our Dad had in his last few months with us.

Helen Irene Hiller - April 22, 1941 - October 27, 2022

Departed: 10/27/2022 (Missoula)
Obituary Preview: In the early morning of October 27, Helen Irene Hiller passed away in her sleep surrounded by her family. She was 81 years old.
Irene was born on April 22, 1941 in Missoula Montana to Herman and Corra Walters. Her first years were spent at the family ranch, home of the Clover Leaf Dairy in the beautiful Rattlesnake Valley, which remained one of her favorite places her entire life.
The Walters family later moved to Missoula’s Westside, where she attended Lowell Elementary. While at Lowell, one of her proudest moments was breaking a window on the third floor when she hit a home run while playing baseball. During her time at Lowell she was part of Campfire Girls and had the opportunity to attend Camp Paxson where she learned the Biggity Oggity song, a ditty she loved to share with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids always with a huge smile. Her smile and laughter only increased as she listened to them try and repeat it.
On a summer day at the Big T pool, now home of Currents, Irene met Larry Hiller, the boy who would go on to become her future husband. Their courtship lasted through her time at Missoula County High School where she graduated in 1959. She then attended, and graduated Missoula Business College for Women and went on to utilize her skills as a secretary and bookkeeper with Montgomery Ward in Missoula.
In 1965 Irene and Larry got married and began their family.
In 1972, Irene began what would become a lifetime of advocacy for Missoula’s kids. Starting as room mother and also joining the Willard PTA, Irene took on many roles. One of those roles was affectionately being known by many of the students as the “hot dog lady.” She also started the successful effort to close Longstaff Street that ran through the Willard playground. This proved to be the catalyst for her to move on to the School District #1 board of trustees, where she served 15 years from 1977-1992, many of these years spent as chairman of the board. During this time, Irene was a staunch advocate for Missoula’s kids. Her countless volunteer hours resulted in numerous accomplishments. One of her proudest being the implementation of the Community Care Program which brought awareness of youth addiction to Missoula and outlying communities. She was also instrumental in many upgrades and new construction projects within the district. While some of Irene’s causes weren’t always popular, that didn’t stop her from fighting for was she felt was best for kids.
After serving her 15 years, Irene relinquished her post on the school board and later began working for Osco Drug which later became CVS Pharmacy. During her 17 years here, she enjoyed making new friends and reconnecting with many old acquaintances who came through. She often spent just as much, if not more time visiting than she did working as she shared stories about Missoula or her grandkids. Once she left, she enjoyed her time putzing with her flowers and spending time on her front porch keeping an eye on the neighborhood and watching the world go by. Nothing made her smile more than seeing her her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids unexpectedly show up. Irene was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Corra. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Larry Hiller; daughter Diana Sontag, son-in-law Steve, granddaughter Amanda Knudsen, grandson-in-law Jordan, great-grandkids Charlie, Maddie, Hannah & Liam, & granddaughter Kelleigh Sontag; daughter Stacey Rossmiller, son-in-law Mike, grandson Matthew & granddaughter Kaytlin; daughter
Leslie Hiller; her brother Herman “Al” Walters; many cousins, nieces & nephews; as well as three dogs and three cats.

Daniel W. Noonan - May 16, 1958 - October 26, 2022

Departed: 10/26/2022 (Missoula)
Obituary Preview: Daniel Ward Noonan, a 3rd generation lifelong resident of St. Regis, passed away at his home on October 26th, 2022 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born on May 16th, 1958 to the late Robert “Tiger Bob” Noonan and Mary K. “Betty” (Kajewski) Noonan in Missoula, Montana as the youngest of eight children: Jeff, Kathy, Patty, Tim, Lyle, Eleanor, and Jim.
In 1964, Dan began 1st grade in St. Regis and impressed his classmates with his extensive knowledge of sports statistics. He continued amassing an amazing amount of sports information throughout his life. Beginning when he was 9 years old, he spent the next three summers at his sister, Kathy’s, apartment on the Western Montana campus, where he impressed the Bulldog football team so much with his sports trivia that he was their unofficial mascot and became a familiar face on the WMC campus.
Dan participated in all of the sports that St. Regis grade school and high school had to offer and often shared memories of the “glory days”. He graduated from St. Regis High School in 1976, then went on to attend the University of Montana. Moving back to St. Regis, Dan began a career as a logger in the mountains of Montana and Idaho, making several lifelong friends. During that time, he met and married Keri Abermoske. They had two daughters, Samantha Lynae and Kacy Chylene. They divorced but remained good friends, so much so that Dan called Keri’s new husband, Kirk Willhite, his “husband-in-law.”
In 1993 Dan shifted his career path to residential and commercial construction. He began his construction career working on the addition to St. Regis School. The highlight of his time working on the school was having lunch with his daughters every day.
Dan started his own company, Noonan Construction, in 1996. Since that time, he has left his mark on western Montana by building or remodeling countless homes and businesses throughout Mineral County. Dan’s honesty and integrity made him a much sought after contractor. He mentored and befriended many of his employees, providing a foundation for some to pursue their own careers in contracting.
Beginning in 2001, Dan started his football coaching career with the St. Regis Tigers football team. They made it to the playoffs for the first time in several years. For 10 years Dan coached the Tigers and mentored numerous students throughout his time. He had the pleasure of coaching his nephews, Danny Noonan and Andrew Hammon. He was excited to be selected to coach special teams at the Montana Class-C All-Star game in the spring of 2003.
Dan had a lifelong obsession with sports. He loved all things St. Regis Tigers, Montana Grizzlies (season tickets were a basic necessity), Lakers, and Raiders. He could answer any sports question you asked, especially Raiders trivia, even in his final days. Dan was also an avid golfer, participating in the St. Regis Men’s League, playing in several golf tournaments each year, losing plenty of golf balls, and even making a hole-in-one at the Trestle Creek Golf Course.
In 2003 he met the love of his life, Nicole, at a Heart concert in Idaho. She was a University of Montana graduate, but more importantly, she was an avid Griz fan! They were married in June of 2005 and had their daughter, Grace Leigh, in December of 2006. Dan and Nicole had a wonderful life together golfing, skiing, rafting on the Clark Fork River, watching Griz football games, competing in family game nights, and enjoying each other's company.
Dan enjoyed socializing with his many friends at the bar after hard days at work. He loved to have people come to his house for barbecues, football games, holidays and game nights. He always had a winning Halloween costume and liked to celebrate New Year’s Eve. He often took his daughters on drives through the mountains, helping them to appreciate the beauty of Montana.
Dan touched thousands of lives throughout his lifetime and will be missed by those who loved him. His spirit will continue to live on through the homes he built, his beautiful wife and daughters, as well as his many friends and family.
In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his sister Patty and his brothers Tim and Lyle.
He is survived by his wife, Nicole, his daughters Samantha (Gerrick) Ware of Waianae, Hawaii, Kacy (Patrick Roy) Noonan of Plains, Montana, and Grace Noonan of St. Regis, Montana; his five grandchildren, Amaiya, Gavin, Amari, Rocklynn, and Zaiden; several nieces and nephews, and especially close to him, his nieces Patty (Austin) Dillree of Seeley Lake, Montana and Amanda (Pat) Duncan of Las Vegas, Nevada and nephew Danny (Raina) Noonan of Missoula, Montana; his sisters, Kathy Davis of Seeley Lake, Montana and Eleanor (Rayme) Vinson of Juneau, Alaska; his brothers, Jeff Noonan of Laughlin, Nevada and James (Candy) Noonan of Anaconda, Montana. Donald E. Nicholson - June 22, 1934 - October 11, 2022

Departed: 10/11/2022 (Missoula)
Obituary Preview: Donald E. Nicholson (88) passed away early Tuesday morning, October 11, 2022 at St. Patrick Hospital surrounded by family.
Don was born on June 22, 1934 in Missoula, MT to Ewen & Edna (Olson) Nicholson. He was soon followed by his twin brothers, Stuart and Stanley, two years later, and together they grew up in the greater Missoula area. In their preschool days, they lived in the Bitteroot Valley near Darby. When Don became school age, the family moved to Missoula to the house his father built. He went to school in Missoula from grade school through college, graduating from the University of Montana in 1956 with a BS degree in Chemistry. He was in the Army ROTC program & then following graduation served in Korea as a tank commander.
While in college, he met Donna Goodmansen and they were married in September 1956. They had 5 sons (Scott, Gregg, Mark, Eric, Kyle) and made multiple moves across the U.S. while the family was growing up. Don’s first job after returning from Korea was as a chemist in a paper mill. He remained and excelled in the paper business with multiple companies throughout his career, rising to the level of mill manager. Don was very active with the Boy Scouts and all 5 of his boys were in scouting with his youngest son, Kyle, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He took up a hobby of creating stained glass pictures for family members and friends in the 1980’s. All his boys still proudly display the works he gave to each of them.
Donna passed away in 1993 after a courageous 4-year battle with breast cancer.
Don was a long-time “Griz supporter” and served a term as University of Montana Alumni President. While attending homecoming, he became reacquainted with Ardice Steinbrenner and they were married in September 1995. They moved from Illinois to Connecticut in 1996 and Don ran a paper mill there for Robert and Jonathan Kraft, who are owner and president of the New England Patriots. He soon became a huge fan after attending many Patriot games and remained so for the rest of his life. He retired from the paper industry in 2000 and they returned to Missoula for good. There they became owners of Mountain States Collision Repair until they sold the shop, and Don fully retired.
Throughout his life, Don was very involved in the communities where he lived. He served on the Missoula City Council twice, once in the late 1960’s and again in the 2000’s. During his first stint on city council, he helped in getting the “turtle fountains” put in some of Missoula’s city parks. While living in Albany, OR in the 1970’s, he was instrumental in obtaining a grant to build the Albany Community Pool. He also was heavily involved in getting the indoor tennis courts built at the Albany Tennis Club. After returning to Missoula, he was a big driver and originator in starting the University of Montana’s Sports Hall of Champions, and was the first to make a donation to get it off and running.
Family was very important in Don’s life. He, along with his dad and his brothers, built the family, two-story A-frame cabin on Placid Lake in the early 1960’s. He designed the spiral staircase that connects the two floors, as well as the outside deck, which hosted numerous gatherings. The Nicholson cabin is still used every summer by many family members and has seen many family reunions over the years. He and Ardice felt it was important for their grandchildren to get to know each other, so they held two “Grandkids Camps” at the family cabins on Placid and Big Sky Lakes.
Don was preceded in death by his first wife Donna, son Gregg, brother Stan and nephew Brian.
He is survived by his wife Ardice, Brother Stu (Janie), sisters-in-law Colleen and Sharon (Fred) Weldon, sons Scott (Susan), Mark (Kelley), Eric, Kyle (Edna), stepsons Gerry and Tom Steinbrenner, stepdaughter Jill (Barry) Olson many grandchildren, step grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, a niece and cousins.
A memorial service for Don will be held at The Holy Spirit Episcopal Church in Missoula at 11:00am on Friday, November 18, 2022 with a reception to follow. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Grizzly Athletic Association, Hall of Champions, Attn Greg Sundberg, Adams Center-139, University of Montana, Missoula, MT 59812; the University of Montana Alumni Association, or any charity of your choosing in memory of Don.

Russell Eugene Cromwell - December 20, 1978 - October 10, 2022

Departed: 10/10/2022 (Missoula)
Obituary Preview: Russell Eugene Cromwell, 43, of Missoula MT passed away October 10, 2022 surrounded by his family in a circle of love.  He was met on his new journey by Grandma and Grandpa Simmons, Grandma Mary and Grandpa Leon, Great Grandma James, Uncle Larry, Uncle Phillip, and Aunt Betty.
Russell grew up in Missoula.  As a child, Russell spent many weekends and evenings up Lolo Creek “running the logging roads” with his Grandpa Russell and Uncle Phillip.  Together with his brother, Eric, the four of them enjoyed countless hours of exploring and endless entertainment, drinking root beer and “smoking” candy cigarettes. Russ graduated in 1997 from Sentinel HS.  In 1997, he was employed by Opportunity Resources Inc. Russell prided himself on being part of the Forest Service & Smokejumper team for over 25 years, working on the Opportunity Resources Janitorial Crew at the Aerial Fire Depot and Missoula Smokejumper Base.
Russell was an athlete with Special Olympics in swimming, shot put, relays, and other events.  He took pride in the medals he won and all the achievements and the many friends he made.
Russell enjoyed spending time with family and friends hunting, fishing, playing cards, and going to Griz games. His enjoyment of card games was well-known by family, and gatherings inevitably ended with an evening of cards. He would lull you into a false sense of security and then wham he would have the winning hand…again!  Russell and his Uncle Alan had a 20-year ongoing computer game of Diablo and Uncle Alan misses his partner, saying he has no one to rescue him now.
Six years ago, the family bought 7 acres near Paradise and called it The Outpost.  The railroad where you cross was dutifully named Cromwell Crossing.  Russell had his own site on a bench named Russell’s Bench, by his dad Leon.  He had the company of wild turkeys, deer, squirrels, birds, skunk (shudder), and even a bear.  His bench had a big, open space to enjoy the night skies and star gazing.  The fire pit he built was an evening pleasure and was right outside his trailer he received from his Grandpa Russell.  The trailer, too, had a name, “Grandpa’s Hut.” He had built his very own happy place!  Russell enjoyed the wood gathering and using the chainsaw, cutting up the campfire wood, and clearing brush.  He loved running the four-wheeler up to the four different levels of the property.  He had his Evil Knievel moments and it was a joyful activity.  The St Regis River was a very close fishing hole and you could often find Russell there with his brothers, Eric and Evan, and his Dad. He was very successful and proud to be catching dinner. Russell really enjoyed lake fishing, and the fishing trips to Fort Peck with his father Brian and brothers Eric and Cory were high points in his life.  He proudly posed with the many? pike he caught.  Russell always looked forward to the hunting trips with his father.  When Russell was born, his father’s first words to him were “This is my little hunting buddy!”
Russell had a great many friends from work that he enjoyed and who were a big part of his life.  Russell was there to help plan parties, barbeques, and outings.  He was so proud of the barbeque he hosted this summer and thought through every detail of a perfect barbeque.  Cooking was a new passion and he was becoming a whiz at AllRecipes.com.  He would also call family members and ask for their recipes of his favorite items. Later, he would proudly send family members photos of the end result.  He was looking forward to the Annual Christmas Cookie Bake-A-Thon this year with the family and delivering his goodie bags to one and all.
Russell was a huge part of his Auntie Kathy and Uncle Alan’s lives.  He was with them in Chelan WA when he was only 4 years and was Alan’s little man for two weeks and they were quite the little twosome. Walking down the beach with 100 ducks following them for the bread they had from the bakery.  He and Eric were at their homes often and were their first children.  When their own children, Lindsey and Aaron, arrived, Russell was included in many of their trips to Oregon and the ocean during spring break and summers.  Later when they moved back to Missoula, Russell was always invited to their table for all the holidays and special events.  He would come over and spend weekends just to hang out and play games.  He was included in Easter egg hunts, the Christmas costume party, tubing at the lake, Forest Service lookout camping, lake trips, and anything else they did as a family, he was with them.  He loved using the chainsaw in the last cleanup project and did an amazing job of sawing the log pile.  From baby to adulthood Russell was their eldest child and always part of their family. Although Russell did not serve in the military, you would not know it by the pride he took in his Country and the serving branches. He was proud to come from a military-heavy family and sported the Marines motto on almost everything; hats, shirts, hoodies, coats, bumper stickers, keychains. He was a true patriot. Semper Fi!
Russell will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness, smile, laugh, and big heart.  He was always generous with friends and family – generous with his time, sharing his money, with his enthusiasm for barbequing and cooking, and just being an all-around nice guy.
Russell is survived by his Father Brian (Sandy), Mother Darla, Dad Leon, Grandparents Russell and Rosemarie, brothers Eric, Evan, Cory, and Luca, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will also be dearly missed by his girlfriend and love of his life, Kristina Tromp, and his many friends.
Russell will be celebrated at a later date in summer of 2023 at his land near Paradise, his Happy Place.
