Obituary Preview: Charles H. Holdredge III, known affectionately as Charlie, passed away on April 30, 2024, after a brief illness. Born to Virginia (Pupillo) and Charles H. Holdredge II, Charlie was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and a pillar of the town of Westerly which he so dearly cherished and the broader Westerly-Stonington community.
Charlie was a graduate of Stonington High School, where he was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball (Captain). He attended and played football at American International College in Springfield MA, and later graduated from Boston University with a BA in Journalism. Charlie served in the Army’s 76 Infantry Division, earning the rank of Sergeant First Class. His career led him to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, and a career that spanned 40 years in radiological control. He also assisted in the family business, Holdredge’s Garage, and later Holdredge Cottage and Rentals.
Together with Jane, his beloved wife of 59 years, they raised two children: Virginia (David) Fabianski of Pawcatuck, and Brian (Shannon) Holdredge of Westerly. He was a proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Meghan, Hannah, and Matthew Fabianski; Maddie (Andrew) Lewis, and Brady, Caelen, and Reagan Holdredge; three step-grandchildren, Arianna and Kayleigh Sullivan, and Jon Brutcher.
Charlie’s life was defined by his love for his family and his dedication to community service. He was a staple throughout his children’s and grandchildren’s lives, never missing school functions or sporting events at the youth, high school and collegiate levels. He was an active member of the Westerly Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce, The Westerly Yacht Club, The Westerly Lodge of Elks, The Watch Hill Fire Department (65 years of service), an usher at St. Clare Church in Misquamicut, RI for 40 years, and a supporting member of the Westerly Republican Town Committee since 1965.
Charlie’s commitment to the local region spanned his entire life. He was the President of the Westerly Sports Boosters, a member of the Rhode Island Reds Hockey Heritage Society, the Rhode Island Chapter National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and the Westerly and Stonington High School Hall of Fame, where he was recently inducted. He was also the President of the Providence Gridiron Club, a hall of fame inductee in 2003, and for 32 years was the “voice of the Bulldog’s” as the press box announcer at Westerly high school football games. He has received numerous community awards and citations throughout his life, many coming during his retirement where he committed countless hours in support of causes nearest to his heart.
Charlie will always be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a true patriot to the country he loved so dearly, and a friend to the town and people of Westerly.

Obituary Preview: James Paul “Jamie” Grainger, of Narrow Lane, Charlestown, passed away at the Westerly Hospital on Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the age of 75.
Born in Tewksbury, MA, he was the son of the late Anne and Dr. Henry Grainger.
Jamie was employed as a newspaper carrier and was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, music and spending time with his family.
He leaves his siblings, John Grainger, II and his wife Gail of White River Jct., VT, Cathy Craig of Charlestown, Matthew R. Grainger and his wife Joanne of Cape Coral, FL, and eight nieces and nephews, Maryanne Daly-Doran, Keelin Petrone, Brendan Daly, Christopher Craig, Caitlin Rogers, Bonnie Craig, John Grainger III, and Dana Parmenter. Jamie was predeceased by his sister Jane B. Daly, and brothers-in-law, William Daly and Ralph Craig.

Obituary Preview: Margaret S. Reid, 84, of Shore Road, Westerly, went home to heaven on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. She was the wife of the late David R. Reid, to whom she was happily married for 52 years.
Margie was born in Toronto, Ontario to John and Euphemia Smart, and later became a citizen of the United States.
Margie earned a nursing degree and worked as a registered nurse for various hospitals in her lifetime. She especially enjoyed her years in the NICU caring for newborns. She also worked for many summers as a nurse at Deerfoot Lodge, a Christian camp in the Adirondacks.
She loved keeping fully up to date with all her extended family, and entertaining friends and relatives. She was a firm believer in Jesus Christ as her Savior, and an active member of Groton Bible Chapel. She also played a vital role in Growing Christians Ministries, a worldwide Bible teaching ministry which was founded by her husband. She spent many years serving and hosting large gatherings for church-based functions, Young Life outreaches, Bible studies, and youth groups. Her belief in the sanctity of human life led her to foster newborn babies awaiting adoption. Her faith made her a mother-figure to many.
Margie leaves behind three children, Catherine Reid of New Jersey, David J. Reid of Indiana, and Ronald Reid of Rhode Island; and two sisters, Ellen Brookes of Maine and Marnie Piuze of California. She had one predeceased brother, John D. Smart. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Callie, Connor, Ingrid, Kirsten, Jon, and Dave; one great-grandchild, Vincent; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Keller was the owner and operator of Eagle Cab for many years. He served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. Oglethorpe. He also served in the RI ANG at the Westerly Armory for many years before becoming a recruiter.
He leaves behind his son Ryan J. Bridgham and wife Holly, and daughter Joellyn Rojas; four siblings, Keith Bridgham, Mary Nichols, Katherine D’Amico and Arlene Bridgham; six grandchildren, Monica, Logan, Alayna, Gavin, Madilyn and Avery; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Keller was predeceased by his brother Kenneth, and his sister Donna Brustolon. Obituary Preview: Willliam R. Burley, 79, died peacefully surrounded by family at the Westerly Hospital on April 11, 2024. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Marlene (Simone) Burley.
Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late James and Ruth (Maine) Burley. Bill is survived by his stepchildren, William Simone (Jayme), Thomas Simone, Keith Simone, Marlene Yost and Debra Beck; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Agnes Santorelli of Clifton Park, New York and several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his sister Carol Williams.
Bill served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Electric Boat as a metal sorter. Bill was a left-handed pitcher during his high school years, an avid bowler who bowled many 300 games and also an avid golfer. He was a member of the Calabrese Society and the Jewett City VFW.
Bill was a kind, loving and modest man and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. Obituary Preview: Stephen Henry McGuire, 86, beloved husband for 45 years of Concetta (DeSantis) McGuire, of Westerly, passed away on April 7, 2024 in Englewood, Florida while on his yearly vacation.
He was born in Waterbury, Connecticut to the late Patrick and Rubina McGuire. He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Wells, and brother, Joseph McGuire.
In addition to his wife Concetta, Stephen is survived by his sister Patricia Zailskas; his children, Michaela Lamb (Jacob), Patrick McGuire (Kathleen), and Joseph McGuire (Elizabeth); and grandchildren, Lydia, Molly, Kevin, and Violet Lamb, Cora and Colin McGuire, and Ivy, Belle, and Milo McGuire.
Stephen attended Waterbury schools. He enlisted in the Marines after high school and was stationed at Camp Lejeune. During basic training, he survived the infamous incident at Ribbon Creek. He worked at Northeast Utilities for 34 years where he made lifelong friends. While living in the area and working at Millstone, he met the love of his life. Steve and Connie created a beautiful life in Westerly, Rhode Island. The Irishman married an Italian girl. He was embraced by her family and friends. Many memories were created sharing food and drink and celebrating with them. He never learned the language, but caught on to a few choice words like “gavone.”
Stephen enjoyed working in the yard, collecting recipes that he never cooked, eating, going for walks, and reading, especially the newspaper. He was forever cutting out articles for his kids and grandkids to read pertaining to their work and activities. He was obsessed with the news. In more recent years, Steve loved watching his grandkids’ sporting and school events. Long talks with his daughter were always a special part of their days. There was never anyone who enjoyed going to work more than Steve. Helping out at his sons’
businesses was his favorite pastime. He was their best employee.
Stephen’s presence will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love, dedication, and zest for life will remain forever in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4-7pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00pm on Friday at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm St., Westerly. There is no procession to church from the funeral home. Robert worked as an Electrical Engineer for E.B. General Dynamics in Groton for many years. He had proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and was a communicant of St. Pius X Church. Bob was a member of the Westerly Lion’s Club and a life member of the Westerly Lodge of Elks BPOE #678. He enjoyed gardening, but the greatest joy of his life, was spending precious time with his grandchildren. Bob is survived by his two children, Robin Sievers of Middletown, RI, and Paul R. Gentile (Laura) of California. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Brandon and Nicole, as well as his great-granddaughter Luna. Obituary Preview: SHREWSBURY, MA - Margaret Bray Welsh, also known as “Mimmi,” “Margo,” and “Marge,” resident of Shrewsbury, MA and Westerly native, passed away on Sunday, March 31. 2024 at the age of 91. She was born in Westerly, RI, the daughter of the late William and Catherine Bray.
Marge was a graduate of WHS class of ‘51 and attended Bryant College.
She was a founding member and past president of the Trillium Garden Club and active in the Arbutus, Wareham and Shrewsbury garden clubs. Marge’s passion and creativity for floral design earned her numerous awards. Additionally, she had a longstanding career with Laura Ashley in home furnishings, window displays, and sales.
Marge’s love of history inspired her to volunteer as a docent at numerous museums, including the John Brown House Museum, Blithewold Mansion, Thornton Burgess Society and Gilbert Stuart Museum. Her hobbies included XC skiing, traveling, gardening, book club and spending time outdoors with her late husband of 61 years, David, and family. She was also an avid NE Patriots and Red Sox fan! Marge cherished time spent with her grandchildren and summers in Watch Hill and at the Galilee Beach Club.
She is survived by her daughters and their families; Kerri Kelly (Kevin); Kathleen Callahan (Kevin); Kristie McGonigle (Robert); and Karolyn Busconi (Brian); grandchildren, David Kelly; Catherine Kelly Hill (Ryan), Kelly Callahan Gorgol (Matthew), Liam and Aidan Busconi, and Amelia McGonigle; and great-granddaughter, Tatum Hill. Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late Ralph H. and Philomena Tucker.
Ralph worked as a chemical operator for Pfizer for many years until his retirement in 1996. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church and an accomplished baker. Ralph enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife and together they took 23 cruises.
Family was very important to Ralph and he will be dearly missed by his wife Sally and their three children, Gary L. Tucker of Westerly, Dawn Marie Clark of Ashaway and Linda L. Brown of Westerly. Ralph also leaves three cherished grandchildren, Alisha Tucker, Ashley Clark and Alex Brown. He was predeceased by two half-brothers, Robert Bogue and Ernest Bogue Jr. Visiting hours are omitted. Gary M. Dion - Unknown - March 23, 2024

Obituary Preview: Gary Manning Dion, beloved husband of Jennifer Dion, of Newbury, NH, died unexpectedly at the age of 53 on March 23, 2024.
Born in Westerly, RI, he was the son of the late Norman P. Dion and Mildred (Manning) Dion of Westerly. Gary was a 1988 graduate of Westerly High School and the New Hampshire Technical Institute with a degree in Paramedic Emergency Medicine.
Gary had a lifelong passion for emergency/rescue service. From the early age of 6 and fueled by the TV show “Emergency!” Gary knew he was destined for a career saving lives. Gary completed 36 years as a nationally registered paramedic. He started off in the business at the age of 14, volunteering with the Westerly Ambulance Corps. He was a basic EMT at 16 and an Intermediate at 17.
Gary worked for several ambulance services, including Rockingham Regional Ambulance in Manchester NH, AMR Ambulance in Manchester, Trinity EMS in Lowell MA and Stewart’s Ambulance Service in Meredith NH. He also attended the New Hampshire Fire Academy in Concord NH and became a certified Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 firefighter. He then started working for the town of Londonderry NH as a firefighter/paramedic. Because of his incredible aptitude and leadership ability, Gary was promoted to Lieutenant in only five years. Over his lengthy career, he obtained many certifications which included Aircraft Rescue Firefighting, Fire Company Officer, Hazardous Materials Technician and Rescue Systems I and II - a small sampling of the incredible resume that Gary built and was continuing. Gary notably responded to New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and, with FEMA, to upstate New York during the COVID pandemic.
One of his proudest moments was obtaining his Critical Care and Certified Flight Paramedic Certification. (FP-C). This allowed Gary to practice high performance pre-hospital medicine. It was here where he became an incredible mentor and instructor to countless hundreds of EMT's and paramedics.
Gary was an avid reader, jokester, always up for fun, could make any uncomfortable/dark situation better with his quick wit and sometimes colorful sarcasm. Gary was a devoted husband and dog-dad to Zoe and Ryle.
In addition to his wife and mother, Gary is survived by his sister Amy Dolahan and her husband John; his brother Andrew Dion and his wife Martha; three nieces Emma Dion, Audrey Dolahan, Hannah Dion and several cousins.

Born in Provincetown, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Helen and Ernest J. Meads. Elizabeth aka “Betty” grew up in Fairhaven, Massachusetts where she graduated from Fairhaven High School. She resided and raised her three children in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The Servais Family was a core part of the community. Betty was the president of the Dartmouth Women’s Club for several years.
Professionally, Elizabeth worked as a travel agent for World Wide Travel for many years, and in her later years, after raising her children, she became an entrepreneur and started her own day care facility for preschool children. Betty loved children, especially her “GRANDCHILDREN” –She enjoyed spending time with them whenever she could and her eyes would light up when she saw them.
Betty loved her cats and had many companions over the years, Ming, Bonsai and Jun Chi.
Elizabeth will be missed by family and friends. She leaves behind her three children, Christine Servais of Bristol, RI, Lauren Rust and husband, Anthony of S. Kingstown, RI and Brian Servais of Middleboro, Mass.; and eight grandchildren. Elizabeth was predeceased by her sister Pat Jones. Visiting hours are omitted. Born in Westerly, he was the son of the late Marion and Albert I. Hawkins Sr., and grew up on Wells Street in Ashaway. He was a graduate of Chariho Regional Junior-Senior High School in Richmond and earned the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts.
Ike was the owner and operator of Hawkins Well & Pump for many decades and was also the former co-owner of Jake’s Food Machine in Westerly. He also established and operated the Brick Oven Restaurant in Ashaway. Ike was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was an avid outdoorsman, spending many hours hunting and fishing throughout the area. He was also a past member of the Ashaway Sportsmen’s Club.
He loved to push himself to try various things, like building his own in-ground pool, bee keeping and various construction projects, as well as a maintaining a menagerie of animals like goats and chickens. When it came to Yankee ingenuity, he always said that if man made it, he could repair it, and he made good on that boast over and over.
In addition to Patricia, he leaves behind a daughter, Jessica Babineau and her husband Ron, and a son, Justin, and his wife Laura; two step-sons, Michael and Brian Rosso; four grandchildren, Drew, Tori and Owen Babineau and Josie Hawkins; as well as four step-grandchildren, Brennan, Liam, Uma and Bodhi Rosso. She was a longtime member of T.O.P.S. and an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and coloring intricate portraits in coloring books. She was a passionate and regular viewer of the Wheel of Fortune and she also enjoyed playing cards, especially Rummy 500. Dorothy loved music of all types.
She leaves behind her four children, Jon E. Senior and wife Doris, Amy E. O’Brien and husband Michael, Janis E. Wright and Allison Bauer; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 5-7pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. All are also welcome to attend the Graveside Funeral Service at 11am on Tuesday at First Hopkinton Cemetery, Chase Hill Road, Ashaway. She was the beloved wife of Edward L. Miguel for 68 years. Born in Westerly, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Vincenzina “Jenny” Cozzolino.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, David Miguel (Deidre), Karen Miguel, and Jennifer Fusco (Jay); daughter-in-law Laura; two grandchildren, Kelley Dunford (Jordan), and Philip Miguel; and several nieces and nephews. Jerrye was predeceased by her brother Louis F. Cozzolino, and her sister Mary Evans.
Jerrye was a graduate of Westerly High School and St. Joseph’s Nursing School and ECSU, where she earned her B.A when she was in her 60’s. She was a lifelong learner, continuing adult education classes in film and art.
She served the community for more than 42 years as a Registered Nurse at the Westerly Hospital, most of those years on ICU. She always said that the most gratifying part of working in a community hospital was caring for people she knew, and it is no surprise to her family that people say Jerrye was one of the very best nurses they had ever met.
A Communicant of St. Pius X Church, Jerrye’s faith was central to her life, and is what she and Ed built their family around. She had a zest for life. She had a way of attracting to her, and to everyone around her, light and friendship and love.

He then worked for James Romanella & Son as a truck driver for many years. He was also employed at the former Shetucket Plumbing and Pipe Pro Inc. in Hope Valley. John was a member of TeamstersLocal 493.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jillian Jarrett (Doug Henderson), and Caroline DeBolt (Curtis); two siblings, James Tarbox (Elena) and Colleen Bell; and two grandchildren, Brianna Jarrett and Danica Jarrett.
