Annie Ceil Jones departed this life on Friday, April 26, 2024 at Brother Bonaventure Care Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey at the age of 100. She was predeceased by her husband, Willie Jones; her parents, Sammie and Jake Smith; a sister, Cora Manning; her stepson, Archie Lee Jones and a stepdaughter, Laurena Jones Wright.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, a daughter, Vivian Jones of Linden, NJ; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Reese of Newark, NJ; granddaughters, Tanara Jones of Atlanta, GA and Gania Jones of Linden, NJ; a grandson, Bryan Pack (Lisa) of Snellville, GA; 3 great grandchildren, Trayvon Pack, Jaiden Pack and Bryson Pack; 1 great great granddaughter, Malani Love Pack and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Melissa Elizabeth Harris-Franklin - January 22, 1955 - April 20, 2024

Obituary Preview: Melissa Elizabeth Franklin, beloved mother to Brian Andrew Franklin, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024 after a long battle with cancer. Her final moments were spent peacefully at home in Elizabeth, NJ surrounded by family. We are heartbroken to lose someone so special.
Melissa was born on January 22nd, 1955 in Newark, NJ to Leroy and Rena Harris. She graduated from Mother Seton High School, Clark, NJ. She attended Union College. Melissa worked in retail for several years and then moved on to working in finance through banks and finance departments of retail establishments. On June 27th 1976 she married Gary Franklin and from that union came Brian Andrew.
Melissa was a true “Giants fan”. And, she was known for her phenomenal way with all children (spoiling them and protecting them from all harm). She was truly a “Child Whisperer” the children flocked to her! Also, her delicious lasagna recipe was requested at every family function. For these and so many other reasons, Missy, Dee, MiMi, Missy Mother (as she was affectionately called) will be sorely missed by many.
Melissa was predeceased by her mother, Rena Harris Booker, her father, Leroy Harris and her step-father, Herman Booker, a brother, Frederick Harris, (Vanita) and her nephews, Brady Harris and Gordon Ford.
She is survived by her only son, Brian Andrew Franklin, her brother, Willard and sister, Cheryl. Her nephews, Aundre, (Nicole) Adrian, and Alex, (Monica) one niece, Rayna Elizabeth a host of grand and great nieces and nephews and many friends and well wishers.

Obituary Preview: John Benjamin Lovett, Sr. was born on August 23, 1944, in New Brunswick, NJ to the late Aurelius Lovett Sr. and Jessie Mae Lovett. Jesus welcomed John B. Lovett home on April 15, 2024. He served as Trustee at Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church in Edison, NJ 08820, and the Middle Atlantic Conference of the NY Metro Area. His secondary office of service where he served as an usher was at Mt. Zion. He did continuous missionary work with his late wife, ThD. Gloria Lovett, (Doctorate of Theology).
On August 28, 1965, Trustee John B. Lovett, Sr. and ThD. Gloria Lovett were married at Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church. Afterwards, they settled down in Edison, NJ and later moved to Rahway, NJ. Their Holy Matrimony birthed seven children, four boys and three girls: the first two being fraternal twins. John B. Lovett Sr., used his God given abilities to better the life of his family. Those gifts were and not limited to these: excellent provider, protector, dedicated father, putting others first, unsearchable love, strong work ethic, and gentleness. John B. Lovett Sr. was a loving Grandfather and Great Grandfather. He enjoyed playing games, watching TV, amusement parks, restaurants, and beaches with those who he loved. His favorite foods were rice (do not mess up his rice), peanut butter and jelly mixed in the jar crumbled with bread, burnt toast, corn flakes, and he loved to drink ice water while laying on his stomach watching TV. His famous one-liners were, “A hot mess.” when his children would do something that did not make sense. “Hot to Johnny Moe” whenever he messed up. He was famous for burping then calling himself a pig. The thing he enjoyed a lot was spearheading the Lovett Family Reunion at Rahway Park. He would say, “IT’S HISTORY TIME.”
John B. Lovett, Sr was predeceased by his wife, ThD. Gloria Lovett; his parents Aurelius Lovett Sr. and Jessie Mae Lovett; his twelve siblings: Robert Lovett, Hebert F. Lovett, Joseph Lovett, Douglas Lovett, Elder Aurelius Lovett Jr., Alice Bryant, Marie Lovett, Hattie Phillips, Clementine Adams, Emily Thomas, Jean Barbara (deceased at age 3) and another sister (stillborn, name unknown).

Obituary Preview: Madeline Lynette Clayborne, also known as “Taffy”, was born to the late William and Jean Scruggs on March 10, 1961 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Madeline was educated in the Linden Public School System and received good grades. She worked for some time at various industrial plants. She also worked as a caregiver.
Madeline married twice. Once to James “Hooker” Colbert of Rahway, New Jersey and later to Franklin David Clayborne with whom she was married for 29 years. She loved cooking and experimenting with different recipes and enjoyed watching different television shows. She was excellent at what she did. Early on, “Taffy” had a photographic memory. Madeline was always a happy girl no matter what she went through. She took life as it came.
Her Christian life started and for many years continued as a member of Bethel AME Church of Metuchen, New Jersey with Rev. John Chambers as Pastor. Later, she attended other churches.
Madeline Lynette Clayborne departed this life on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey at the age of 63.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Franklin David Clayborne of Roselle, NJ; three sisters, Elizabeth Jean Holiday of Middlesex, NJ, Ethel J. Lewis (John I. Obituary Preview: Ernest “Sonny” Pershay, aged 92, passed away on March 23, 2024, after a long illness. Sonny was a devoted family man who strongly believed in God. His
faith helped him through his struggles and gave him peace in the end. Sonny was born on June 14, 1931, in Lee County, South Carolina, as the third eldest of ten children born to Albertus and Bessie Sinkler Pershay. He was preceded in death by his siblings - John Pershay, Leroy Pershay, James Pershay, Bert Pershay, Arthur Lee Pershay, Lucille Burgess, Mamie Pershay,
Shirley Pershay, and one adopted brother Henry Cook. Ernest met Mary at a singing event held at New Heaven A.M.E. Church in Lee County, South Carolina, in 1951. He told her early on in their relationship that she would be his wife if she wanted to be. On August 2, 1952, Ernest "Sonny" and Mary Hickmon Pershay tied the knot in holy matrimony at the
justice of the peace office in Sumter. Sonny was a dedicated member of the HEARD A.M.E. Church. He served as a steward and usher, sang on the male chorus and emergency choir, and was a member of the South Carolina Club. He was also a founding member of the
Progressive Men Club. Ernest spent over 24 years working as a machine operator for J. Wiss and Son Company. He had a special talent and love for painting and started his own professional painting service in 1985. Sonny was known for his kindness, soft-spoken nature, and willingness to help anyone with even the
smallest problem. Anyone who knows Sonny knows he loved driving his black Cadillac visiting
family and friends up and down Interstate 95. He is deeply missed by his loved ones who take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace with his creator. Sonny is survived by his wife, Mary Pershay of 71 years, his sister, Ida Melton of Sumter, SC, his special cousin, Carrie Sinkler of Sumter, SC, his in-laws, Lillie Hickmon of Sumter, SC, Audrey Hickmon of Philadelphia, PA, Rebecca Jackson-Keels of Philadelphia, PA, Betty Walker of Philadelphia, PA, and Lula Pershay, a special nephew,

Patricia attended the school system in Jersey City, New Jersey. She later attended NJCU to pursue her degree in Sociology. She became a social worker for the state of New Jersey for DYFS (Division of Youth and Family Services). Patricia later retired in 2017 and moved to Willingboro, NJ.
Mrs. Pat, also known as “Grandma” to everyone, was such a loving and kind-hearted person. She was the epitome of elegance, grace, structure and life overall. Everyone that knew her or had been around her knows she was there for them with open arms and an open door.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Donald Baskerville; her children, Donnette Whetstone (John Watson), Nathaniel Whetstone (Saundra Benthall), and Michael Whetstone (Loretta Whetstone); 10 grandkids, Shmeika, Marcus (Jadynne), David, Tyrand, Samirah, Diedra (Laquan), Michael “Malik”, Kiyasia, Shadonna, and Yahira; 21 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her best friend, Tamara Loftin, and close friends, Kizzy Wilson, and Theressa Moora.
Along with her parents, Patricia was predeceased by her first husband, Nathaniel Whetstone, daughter, Tawanna Whetstone and brother, Peter Friday.

Joan Davis - October 05, 1949 - February 17, 2024

Obituary Preview: Joan Davis was the youngest of beautiful twin girls born on October 5, 1949 to proud parents Mr. Charles Henry Davis and Mrs. Sarah Gibson Davis. Joan and her older sister Jean Davis better known as “the twins” lived in the Melrose section of the Bronx, New York. Joan graduated from Grace H. Dodge Career and Technical High School in the Bronx and went on to a successful career in Administration. She worked for RY Management for many years as an Office Manager, retiring in 2016.
On March 8, 1971, Joan Davis was blessed with her only son, Kyle Lamont Sawyer. A few months before that her sister Jean had her first daughter, Joy and the two grew up more like brother and sister than cousins. As the family continued to grow, Joan was lovingly known as TiTi by all. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, cousin, and friend.
She loved to spend time with family and friends, her favorite times were the holidays and birthdays. Titi Joan loved playing Monopoly with her great niece Jaylin and keeping busy with her great niece Holly and great nephew William IV. She loved her church, making sure even if she wasn’t able to go to service physically, she was always on the daily prayer call and the zoom services every Sunday. She loved to knit, making sure we all had a blanket or two, possibly three.
She was a Breast Cancer survivor, being diagnosed in November 2016 with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She was a warrior, battling this ugly disease with all her might. Although she was going through this it never stopped her from enjoying life, loving on her family and making sure every day counted.
On February 17, 2024 our Heavenly Father took Joan into his arms and reunited her with her sister Jean. She is now resting eternally free of pain and disease.
Joan leaves to cherish her memories and legacy, her son, Kyle Lamont Sawyer (Lourdes Torres Sawyer); granddaughter, Amber Sarah Sawyer; great granddaughters, Anais Gutierrez and Audrey Sawyer; niece, Joy Smith Jones (James A. Jones Jr.); nephews, William Muriel Colon III (Aikisha Holly Colon) and Antonio Colon; great nieces, Jaylin Rae Jones and Holly Grace Colon; great nephew, William Muriel Colon IV; godson, Brent Kirkland along with a host of close family members and dear friends.

Obituary Preview: Louis (Smiley) Wilson began his earthly journey on September 5,1954, in Elizabeth, New Jersey the son of the late David Rice-Wilson and the late Vera Marie Stradford Wilson. He departed this life on January 4, 2024.
Louis served time in the United States Army where he was stationed in Vietnam during the war. He received an Honorable Service Discharge. Louis worked in several other positions after being discharged from the Army.
In 1992 Louis was commemorated with a hero’s plaque from the city of Elizabeth for saving a family from a burning building.
He cherished time spent with family and always looked forward to family gatherings. To all who knew Smiley knew that he loved to laugh. In his younger years Smiley loved to work out. He enjoyed lifting weights. He was also a jokester. He would call you and disguise his voice. He loved his family. He was always on Facebook sending words of encouragement to all of his Facebook family. He was known throughout Elizabeth, and everyone that knew him loved him.
Louis is predeceased by his (brothers) Wendell Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Barry Wilson, Jeffery Wilson, his (sisters) Rosina (Gi-Gi) Wilson, Loretta Wilson-Clark (brother-in law) Jesse Clark. He leaves to mourn his cherished and lasting memories: his (wife) Deborah Wilson, two daughters Felicia Wilson-Atkins (husband) Anthony Atkins of Savannah Georgia, Ladisha Jeffcoat of Elizabeth, NJ, two sons Toriano Young and Steven T. Fox. Two grandsons Todd Nelson and Jerome Washington, one granddaughter Shaquiasha Jeffcoat, one great grandson Tayvion Owens, one brother Christopher Wilson (wife) Debra Wilson, one aunt Marie (Nan) Stradford McCray, nieces, nephews. cousins and a host of other relatives and many many friends

Thyra Bernadette Billups - February 04, 1948 - January 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thyra Bernadette Billups was born on February 4,1948 to the late Joseph M. Billups, Sr and Geneva Murray Billups in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
The family relocated to Linden New Jersey and soon after Thyra accepted Jesus Christ into her life and was baptized at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church under the pastorialship of Rev. Matthew Frazier.
Thyra married the former Steven Maurassee in 1965 and from this union two children were born.
Becoming a resident of Somerset County, Thyra moved her membership to Antioch Christian Church, New Brunswick where she sang joyously in the choir until failing health prevented her from continuing. In 2013 she rejoined the Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church (renamed -1973), Linden and enjoyed attending services for the next few years.
Thyra was a dedicated employee of Willow Creek Rehabilitation and Care Center (Somerset NJ) as a Recreation Assistant, retiring after twenty years of service.
Thyra will always be remembered for her unshakeable faith in Christ Jesus, her indomitable spirit cheerfully overflowing with love and a willingness to go above and beyond for her patients, family, and friends alike. One of Thyra’s proudest moments was obtaining her GED from the Franklin High School Adult Program in 1984. As a young parent, she saw the importance of completing her education and resolved to obtain her diploma.
Thyra’s favorite past-times were get-togethers with family and friends, family vacations, shopping (with family and friends), and of course preparing epic Holiday dinners for family and friends.
Thyra Bernadette Billups peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at her Somerset home. She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Ann Orders.
Left to cherish fond memories are her fiancé, William Chapman; one son, Mahdi Shabazz of New Brunswick, NJ (f.k.a Sheldon Maurrassee); one daughter, Monique Maurrassee of New Brunswick, NJ; one brother, Joseph M. Billups, Jr (Edith) of Piscataway, NJ; eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and an abundance of cousins and relatives.

Obituary Preview: Wanda Denise Reid was born on March 13, 1965 in Plainfield, New Jersey, daughter of the late Queenie Wright Reid and James Reid, Sr.
The Reid family moved to Linden NJ in 1968. Wanda attended school in the Linden School district. She loved to race kids in the neighborhood and would always win with her grandfather Poppa cheering her on. Wanda ran track at Linden High School where she excelled.
Wanda was affectionately known as “Big Wand”. She was very generous; she would help anyone that needed it weather it was a place to stay of a hot meal. She loved to read, crossword puzzles, taking care of plants, watching television, dancing, and listening to music. She had the ability to fit into any room that she was in and would fill the room with her contagious laugh. She was empathetic and would often acknowledge if she hurt your feelings.
Wanda had been employed as a service worker in which she loved to help care for others. She was employed as a Cafeteria Aid in Durham, NC, a bus aide for children with special needs in Newark, NJ and was most recently as a Crossing Guard in Newark, NJ. She took pride in working with children and made strong bonds with them and their families.
Wanda was most proud of being a mother to 4 children and grandmother to 12 grandchildren. She loved taking her grandchildren to the park, dancing, and eating snacks. She most enjoyed cuddling and watching a movie with her children. She would say goodbye by telling you “luv you for life”.
Wanda was pre-decreased by her parents Queenie Reid and James Reid Sr; sister Jacqueline Wright and brother Motty Reid. She is survived by two daughters Aneesha and Raushanah Reid, two sons Ibn Johnson and Carl Watson Jr. Twelve grandchildren Malayjah Reid; Ayana, Aya, Zaiynab, and Zubair Posey; Azaryah, Nahyrah, Asaad and Amad Johnson; Londyn Blackmore; Maraad and Umar Watson. Brother James Reid Jr and sister Linda Reid. Maternal-Aunt Ruby Wright and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Wanda Denise Reid departed this life on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the age of 58.

Marcia was educated in the Roselle, New Jersey school system and graduated from Kent Place School, Summit, NJ. She held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ.
Marcia was a certified trainer, business consultant, speaker, and workshop facilitator whose mission was to educate, equip and empower individuals and organizations to fulfill their goals. Marcia was dedicated to making a difference in her community, locally and globally, by bringing people together, building partnerships, and fostering collaboration.
Marcia was known for her expertise in developing and delivering customized training programs and providing strategic business system and business process consultation services for community organizations, businesses, corporations and government offices. She has worked with entities including the State of New Jersey, General Motors Corporation, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Hoerst Celanese, TRW, and the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
For 28 years, Marcia was employed as an Administrative Specialist, with the State of New Jersey Judiciary in the Essex Vicinage Family Court in Newark, NJ. She was also an instructor with the New Jersey Department of Personnel, Human Resource Development Institute. Marcia was a United Way of Essex and West Hudson Project Leadership Fellow and a Leadership Newark Fellow.
Marcia believed in serving and giving back to her community. She was instrumental in spearheading the National Day of Prayer in Newark, NJ, where her desire for people to have a place to gather for prayer and praise during their lunchtime. This led Marcia to coordinate the first National Day of Prayer event on the steps of Newark City Hall. As the Essex County Coordinator, Marcia has organized, and assisted other volunteers in coordinating, events throughout Essex County, Newark, and Roselle for approximately twelve years. She lead the Prophetic Ministry Team at King of Kings Worship Center in Basking Ridge, NJ. Marcia attended Second Macedonia Baptist Church in Elizabeth, NJ under the leadership of the late Pastor Joseph Adair where she served as a minister and a teacher. Marcia followed her heart and relocated to Texas and joined her church family at Glory of Zion International Ministries in Corinth, TX under the leadership of Chuck Pierce. Marcia was a member of International Breakthrough Ministries under the leadership of Barbara Wentroble.
She was a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians and served on the Executive Board of the New Jersey State Association of Parliamentarians as Corresponding Secretary and Membership Committee Chair. She was a charter member of Residents Revitalizing Roselle and served on a steering committee, vice president, and media liaison. She also volunteered as a counselor for the Gateway Pregnancy Center in Elizabeth, NJ.
In March 2017, Marcia was recognized as a member of the Isagenix 100 Pound Weight Loss Club, for which she appeared on the Dr. Oz Show the following year. Marcia loved exercising and creating healthy soul food dishes. She inspired people to live a healthier lifestyle. Marcia traveled extensively and enjoyed the perks of her United Airlines’ frequent flyer miles.
Her love for math inspired her to start her company “Math with Marcia” with the goal of teaching individuals how to learn math and apply math to everyday life, problem solve, and think critically based on one's learning style. She held math workshops “Math on The Ranch” at the Celina Library and taught Microsoft Word at the Frisco Library. This past summer she taught math to inner-city students at the African American Museum in Dallas.
As you can see, Marcia’s sole mission was to advocate for others and make a difference in the lives of those in her community and everyone she encountered. She aspired to be a positive force in the lives she touched and represented her Lord and Savior in the best light. Marcia was also responsible for bringing several disconnected family members together through her ancestry search.
Marcia was preceded in death by both parents and her sister Christina Minor.
Marcia is survived by her sisters, Denise Randolph (DeRoy), Charlotte, NC and Anita Ford, Odessa, FL; brother, James “Jimmy” Dunn, Jr., Largo, FL; nieces, Donna Ford, Wesley Chapel, FL, Deborah McMillian Odessa, FL and Nicole Dunn, Kennett Square, PA; nephews: Bernard and Jason Randolph, Charlotte, NC.
She is also survived by her Uncle Russell Boston (Doris) and Aunt Myrtle Dawson of White Plains, NY, as well as a host of “Cuzzos”, loving family members, and dear friends.

Obituary Preview: George T. McCall III passed away peacefully at his home in Waynesboro, Georgia on Thursday, November 23, 2023. George was born on December 26, 1957, in Plainfield, New Jersey, one of four children born to the late George Thomas McCall, Jr. and Frankie Johnson McCall.
George, affectionately known as Tommy, spent his early years in Cranford, NJ, where he enjoyed growing up in a loving home with his three older sisters: Linda, Karen, and Valerie. In 1967, the family moved to Roselle, NJ, where George would soon meet his childhood friend, Kevin Roberts, who would be like a brother to him throughout his life.
George attended Locust Elementary School and Abraham Clark High School, where he graduated in 1975. George was known for his kind and quiet demeanor and his avid love of sports. He was a skilled baseball player and an accomplished bowler during his high school years, and everyone who knew him knows that he was a lifelong devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
While attending Abraham Clark High School, George met his high school sweetheart, Renay Penn, and the two would eventually marry in 1979. That same year, he graduated from Montclair State University, where he earned a bachelors degree in accounting. George and Renay had three children: Takisha, Tara, and Lisa. He was also blessed to have five beautiful grandchildren, Brandon, Jalen, Lauren, Nina and Amila.
George had a multifaceted career, spanning almost 40 years, which included working as an accountant, internal auditor, and entrepreneur. He single-handedly started, owned and operated successful businesses providing services in five different industries, including limousine services, sports management, nonprofit fundraising, car sales, and executive recruiting, before retiring from United Airlines in Newark, NJ, where he worked for 20 years.
George was a born-again believer who lived his life with great faith and gratitude. He committed his life to Christ in 1991 after joining St. John’s Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, NJ, where he was baptized, attended Bible study, became a deacon, and was licensed as an associate minister.
George was pre-deceased by his parents, George and Frankie McCall; and two sisters, Karen McCall Newton and Linda McCall. He is survived by his sister, Valerie McCall; three daughters, Takisha McCall Sulton, Tara McCall Dong (Jie), and Lisa McCall (David); two grandsons, Brandon McCall and Jalen Dong; three granddaughters, Lauren Sulton, Nina Dong and Amila Dong; niece, Stacey Newton; nephew, Joseph Newton; five great-nieces; lifelong friend, Kevin Roberts (Gail); and a host of other relatives and friends. George will forever be loved and missed.

Obituary Preview: Mary Louise Hall McLeod was born on March 13, 1933 to Fanny Hargrave Hall and James Wesley Hall at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey. Unfortunately, Mary's mother Fannie passed away when she was about 3 months old. She was raised by her paternal grandparents, Steven and Mary Lou Woods.
While growing up, Mary was an active member of Heard AME Church.
Mary grew up in Roselle, New Jersey where she attended elementary school and attended and graduated from Abraham Clark High School in 1951. This is where and when she started dating her future husband, Walter McLeod.
After high school Mary worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone Company as an operator.
On September 6, 1953 Walter and Mary married and they moved to Rahway, NJ in 1959. Her union with Walter produced 5 children, Michael, Gregory, Helene, Walter and Adrienne.
Mary is predeceased by sisters, Moochie and Joanette Hall, brother, William (aka Sonny) Hall, her husband, Walter McLeod, her sons, Michael and Gregory McLeod and son-in-law, James Simmons.
Mary retired from Bell Atlantic Corporation as an Assistant Manager.
Mary loved to travel with trips to Alaska, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Africa (2x’s), and Caribbean Islands and extensively thought the United States. She also sponsored bus rides to the theater and casinos.
Mary was an active member of her community. As a member of Ebenezer AME she served as a Trustee, she is a Life Member of the National Council of Negro Women (2 term president), and Life member of the NAACP, always involved with her children’s school PTA, AARP, Red Hatters, Golden Girls, Minority Task Force, Den mother. She leaves to cherish fond memories, children, Helene McLeod Shearer, Walter Steve McLeod (Patricia Boykins), Adrienne Louise Simmons and daughter in law, Lora R. McLeod

He loved to share what he cooked with his neighbors and friends. Shaun was known for making the best barbecue ribs and chicken in the area.Shaun is preceded by his sisters Monica F. Louis M. Jones was born on December 7, 1950, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was the only child born to Charles Underwood and Catherine Jones McLean. He was the oldest of four children, raised by his stepfather, George McLean and his mother, Catherine Jones McLean.
Louis attended Baltimore Elementary School in Balden County, North Carolina and graduated from East Arcadia High School in Riegelwood, North Carolina. Louis was very good with his hands. He worked for a number of years as a welder for Washington Equipment Company Inc., in Paterson, NJ. He also worked as an Inspector for the Department of Motor Vehicles in NJ at various locations.
His interest in cars became a hobby which led to his love for watching drag racing. Louis was very friendly. He loved to talk so much that he talked to everyone he met. He never met a stranger.
On October 30, 1971, Louis married Vermell Johnson. They were blessed with two daughters: Kerry (Kevin) Mitchell, Roselle, NJ and Stephanie Jones, Roselle, NJ. In 1983, they relocated to Roselle, NJ. They were married for 51 years until his untimely death. He departed this life on October 9, 2023, at Trinitas Hospital.
Louis leaves to cherish his memory; his wife Vermell, four daughters, Kerry (Kevin) Mitchell, and Stephanie Jones, both of Roselle, NJ, Shonnel Cramartie and Myra (Larry) McKoy, both of North Carolina; one son, Isaiah Underwood, Linden, NJ; three brothers, Wayne McLean, San Antonio, TX, Douglas McLean, Elizabethtown, North Carolina, Warren McLean (Arizona) Fayetteville, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Kiera Jones and others; four honorary grandchildren, Jaleel Whitaker, Akeem Polk Jr., Adonis Polk, and Amora Polk. Winthrop “Windy” McGriff was born on June 30th. 1950 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Fred Thomas and Mattie Lee McGriff. He attended Newark Public Schools and upon completion he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health/PE and Elementary Ed from the University of Wisconsin. His teaching career began at Highland Park Middle School. In 1973, he began teaching and coaching at Piscataway High School. There he led his boys basketball team to two Middlesex County Championships in 1976 and 1977 and was twice named Middlesex County Coach of the Year. During the 1970’s, Windy was known for creating the NJ “Big Heads” traveling teams which consisted of the best male and female basketball talent in New jersey One of the most outstanding talents was All-American Val Walker of Piscataway. Valerie helped to lead her team at Cheyney State (Vivian Stringer) to a trip to the Women’s NCAA Division I Final Four in 1983. Windy was hired to replace Vivian Stringer as the head women’s basketball coach in 1983 and in 1984, he became the first and only African American male coach to take a women’s basketball team to a Division I NCAA Final Four. He was named “Northeast Region” Coach of the Year and his team was featured in Sports Illustrated. It was during that year that his most precious gift arrived, his namesake, “Little Wendy”.
Windy returned to New Jersey and attended Kean College to complete a master’s degree in Education Administration. In 1989, he was hired as the Athletic Director for Montclair High School. He was named “Essex County Athletic Director of the Year” in 2001. In 2002, Windy became the head women’s basketball coach at Union County College. His team won the XIX Regional Championship title and Windy was named Junior College Regional Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Windy retired from his teaching and department head position from Montclair High in December 2014. He continued to work as a NJSIAA basketball assignor for county and state championship games and remained a volleyball and track official until 2019.
One of Windy’s most memorable experiences took place during his senior year of high school at South Side (Malcolm X Shabazz) High School in Newark. He had already made his mark in athletics and as senior class president, he sought a speaker to conclude a tumultuous black history month. Much to his surprise, Windy’s grandfather knew Dr. Marthin Luther King. Windy reached out to Dr. King and in March of 1968, Windy sat on stage with dignitaries as Dr. King addressed the student body. Windy would be the last student to introduce Dr. King. He was assassinated in April of 1968. Decades later, Windy was inducted into the South Side Hall of Fame.
Windy was a member of Ebenezer AME Church in Rahway and an active member of the men’s chorus. He was a devoted husband to former teacher, Esther Paden, and a loving father to his precious daughter, Little Wendy. He loved helping others and his most valued commitment was serving as a track and field official for the New Jersey Special Olympics held yearly in Trenton. From 2007-2019, he was lovingly referred to as, “Big Mac”.

Johnsie met the love of her life, Edward Scott, Jr. and they were joined in holy matrimony on March 11, 1960. This union was blessed with three sons, Edward, III, Drew and Todd. They would raise their family in Cranford, New Jersey. A proud and dedicated mother, Johnsie was heavily involved in her son’s school and recreational activities.
Once the children were older, she was employed by CVI Food Service as a Cafeteria Manager at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York before she retired.
She was a faithful member of Heard A. M. E. Church in Roselle, New Jersey where she was a member of the South Carolina Club and recipient of the Outstanding Women Award for outstanding service and contribution to Heard A.M.E. Church on the 8th of May 2011.
Johnsie L. Scott departed this life on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey at the age of 89. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward Scott, Jr. and her parents, Lillie and William McIntyre.
She leaves to cherish fond memories, her loving sons, Edward Scott, III, Drew Scott and Todd Scott and a special grandchild, Jade Andes. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

In 1972, Janice established her own business, Computer Processing Systems (CPS) in New York City. She would later become an outsourced entrepreneur supporting companies such as AT&T, White-Westinghouse, Diners Club and several banking institutions.
Janice was blessed with and adored her grandchildren, Gary, Adam, Michaelyn, Damion, Benjamin, and Simone, 8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Growing up in a large loving family, she was close to her 7 siblings: Arthur Johnson of Winston Salem, NC, Joseph Johnson (deceased), Robert Johnson (deceased), Jean Herbert (deceased), Cheryl Johnson of Roselle, NJ, Alice Johnson-Jamerson (deceased) and Bayliss Johnson of Roselle, NJ. Janice has a host of nieces and nephews who love her dearly and she will be greatly missed.
Janice was a beloved member of her community, having forged lifelong friendships.

Mother Maria Lillie Holmes - April 06, 1925 - August 28, 2023

Obituary Preview: Maria Lillie Holmes, one of thirteen children of Doctor Spruill and Beulah Alston, was born Monday, April 6, 1925 in Grove Hill, Warren County, N.C. She was educated in the Warren County school system. As a child, despite her physical ailments, she loved to play basketball and enjoy many activities and games with her siblings and friends.
In 1940, at the age of 15, Maria relocated to New Jersey. Shortly thereafter, she joined Bethel United Holy Church in Hackensack, New Jersey where she enjoyed singing in the choir and participating in many of the church activities. Maria loved to sing. Outside of her local church; she even sang in other gospel groups and became locally well-known.
Through her church fellowship within the United Holy Church of America, she met the love of her life, Elijah Holmes. After dating or “courting” for some time, Elijah and Maria decided to get married, and on September 17, 1949 they wedded in holy matrimony and began a 59-year journey together as husband and wife until death parted them in 2008 at the passing of Bishop Elijah Holmes.
For the 48 years that Bishop Holmes served as pastor of Guiding Star in Roselle, NJ, the 21 years as the Pastor of Mt. Hope in Brooklyn, NY, and throughout his international evangelistic ministry, Maria stood by his side as an anchor and support for him and the ministry. Maria in her own right, became an exemplar to First Ladies in and outside of the United Holy Church of America, serving the church in many capacities, all while maintaining her godly dignity, class and Holy confidence. Even after the passing of Bishop Holmes, Maria continued serving Guiding Star as a church mother, mentor to the young women and support for the new First Lady, Kendra Bullock. Maria was a JEWEL to her personal family and church family alike. She is affectionately known as “Aunt Jerry” to some of her nieces and nephews and many others just called her “Aunt Maria.”
In addition to her parents, Maria is predeceased by five brothers: Joseph Spruill, Samuel Spruill, John Spruill, Kelly Spruill and Jerry Spruill, four sisters: Lucinda Nicholson, Alice Durham, Bertha Conklin and Nancy Horner. She leaves to cherish two twin brothers: Willie Spruill (Loretta) of Winsor, MD and Ellis Spruill of Baltimore, MD and one sister, Mary Jones (Earl) of Clifton, NJ, a brother-in-law, Ike Holmes (Virginia) of Rialto, CA, and Lillian King, a dearest friend and confidant.
Maria will forever be cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
