Jean Beraud Brunot - July 03, 1954 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Baldwin)
Obituary Preview: Jean Beraud Brunot was born on July 3rd, 1954, to Marguerite Louisa Brunot and Joseph Brunot in Cap-Haitien, Haiti. Affectionately known as “Roro,” he was a pillar of kindness, a man whose gentle spirit and unwavering strength touched all who knew him.
At a very young age, he excelled in the sciences. He tutored older kids and was never too busy. If anyone ever needed help, Roro without question was there. He helped many people study for the national standardized tests. Under his tutelage many passed. In the early 1990s, Roro's brilliance and work ethic was recognized by the first Haitian woman president, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot, who served from 1990-1991. Under her presidency, Roro became an advisor and at 36 years old, Roro was entrusted with many public works, transportation, and communication projects in the north of Haiti, including his hometown. Under his leadership, he allowed for opportunities and hired many local youths in the north, showing how together, in a spirit of collaboration, we can uplift Haiti. Though he immigrated to the United States more than thirty years ago, Haiti, his beloved homeland, forever held a special place in his heart. He deeply cared about his country and the well-being of its people. Throughout his life, Roro took great pride in his work, always striving for excellence and leaving a lasting impact on all he encountered. His legacy as a skilled engineer will continue to inspire generations to come.
Beyond his professional achievements, Roro's greatest joy stemmed from his role as a loving husband to Mona and a devoted father to Stephanie and Ashley. He cherished his family above all else and found immense fulfillment in nurturing and supporting them every step of the way. Roro's compassion knew no bounds, extending his love and guidance not only to his immediate family but also to his nieces and nephews, whom he treated as his own. He was always a phone call away. He was our emotional support, teacher, and mentor. He was the husband, parent, brother, friend, protector, and confidant that we all needed, and he unwaveringly accepted the task. His warm demeanor, kindness, and infectious humor touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Roro passed away on April 4th, 2024, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. He was a beacon of strength and wisdom; a true father figure whose influence will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Roro, your spirit will continue to shine bright in our hearts.

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Baldwin)
Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Brady (Betty) Higgins (nee Browne), 89, passed away on March 5, 2024 in Albany, N.Y., surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, John A. Higgins, 92, her children John (Margaret), Neil (Arlene), Patrick (Mary Ellen), Brendan (Liz), and Robert (Eileen), her grandchildren John Patrick (Katie), Brian, Meghan, Sean, Katie, Daniel, Lily and Matthew and her sisters Regina Scarola (Joe), Patricia Crowe (Wayne), her brother Neil Browne (Patricia) and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Cornelia Browne. Betty was born in Laurelton, N.Y. (Queens) on January 11, 1935, the 3rd of 5 children. She attended grammar school at St. Mary Magdalene in Springfield Gardens and PS156 in Laurelton. She was a graduate of John Adams High School (1951) in South Ozone Park and earned a B.A. from St. John’s University in 1954 at age 19, followed by an M.A. from the School of Education at New York University in 1956. In 1935 her parents Neil and Elizabeth (both teachers) bought a simple white bungalow on Vermont Street in Long Beach, N.Y. as a vacation home. For Betty and her siblings the bungalow and the west end of Long Beach would come to occupy a special place in their hearts as it was a wonderful place for children, with much sunshine and a feeling of belonging. Everything was in walking distance and everyone in the neighborhood knew each other. While at Saint John’s, Betty met the love of her life, John A. Higgins of Brooklyn, N.Y. After his graduation and overseas military service, they were married on December 26th, 1955 and celebrated their 68th anniversary in 2023. In August 1957 they moved to Baldwin, N.Y. where they lived for 34 years raising their 5 sons. During this time Betty focused on her family and community and made many lifelong (“forever”) friends. A certified teacher by education and training, she performed substitute teaching and homebound student tutoring in various school districts in Nassau County together with being an instructor in adult and creative writing courses. Betty’s deep religious faith led her to become very active in church organizations within her community. She was a parishioner of St. Christopher’s Church in Baldwin and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America (Court Ella Rita 1105) serving in several official positions from 1960 to 1973 (Vice Regent, Grand Regent and Trustee). Betty was a member of the St. Christopher’s Parish Council, a steering committee member of Baldwin FISH (1971-1974) and the first representative of St. Christopher’s to the Baldwin Interfaith Conference (1971-1973). She was an elected member of the St. Christopher’s School Board (1981-1985) and Board President (1982-1984). She was also a member of the Diocesan School Board (1984-1985) and was the first Chair of the St. Christopher’s Pro Life/South Shore Pro Life Committee in 1972 and again in 1988-1989. From 1979-1986 she was on the steering committee of the Pro Life Committee of the Rockville Centre Diocese. After moving to Albany in mid-1991, Betty and John became members of St. Teresa of Avila Parish where Betty joined the Respect Life Committee and planned and conducted conferences, workshops and educational programs. On becoming Chair in 1996, she worked with the Albany Diocese Family Life and Religious Education Offices and the Albany Council of the Knights of Columbus to raise awareness of the need to respect life. After St. Teresa’s closure in 2009, Betty became a member of Mater Christi Parish in Albany, N.Y. where she continued her Pro Life activities. During summers Betty and John took the family on vacation to various states (Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, etc.). Coming down from Canada on such a trip in 1973, they met friends from Baldwin in Wells, N.Y. in the southern Adirondacks. They fell in love with the area and bought land shortly after their visit. Over the next several years they built their vacation home where they became long time members of the Jolie Montaigne Park Owners Association. Betty held Board and Officer positions of the Association over the years. Once John retired in 1991, they spent summers in Wells and made many enduring friendships. She and John loved their home in Wells and often hosted many family and friends there. Betty was a strong, intelligent woman who instilled the importance of good values and responsibility in her children and grandchildren. She taught her sons to love and respect women, which her daughters-in-law were fortunate to benefit from. There was always so much joy and love in their home and Betty and John’s 68 year marriage was a constant example of what faith, love and commitment truly means. She was a true matriarch that held the family together, always planning family gatherings and never missing an important event in their lives. She was always interested in how others were doing and willing to give advice when asked. She had a special connection with family members, be it her sons, daughters-in-law or grandchildren. She was truly the wind beneath their wings. Betty’s heritage was very important to her. She loved to share her Irish pride with her family and friends, spending time sipping Irish tea and even doing the Irish jig on occasion. There was often Irish music playing in their home and singalongs were a must. She traveled to many places, but Ireland was always one of her favorite countries to visit. Betty demonstrated how to live a purposeful life while also enjoying life to the fullest!
