He was also a talented theatre actor, and family members remember his hilarious performances such as Sancho Panza in “The Man of La Mancha” and Cowardly Lion in “The Wizard of Oz.” Though he would frequently burst into song, he was a man of few words, and in the evening, would often say he had reached his word limit for the day. Zayda Rivera - March 27, 1931 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Mount Prospect)
Obituary Preview: Zayda Jazmin Jesalva Rivera (Mount Prospect, IL), affectionately known as Teddy/Grandma Teddy, went to her heavenly home at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at Avantara (rehab facility) in Lake Zurich, IL, just shy of her 93rd birthday. She is lovingly greeted by her husband Conrado Rivera, son Harold Rivera, brother Orlando Jesalva (Pacita), sister Elnora Jesalva Pihura (Philip), mother Dorotea Jazmin Jesalva and father Felix Jesalva as well as countless extended family. She is survived by daughters Lilibeth Rivera MacLean (Bruce), Rosalina Rivera Lattmann, daughter-in-law forever, Melissa Rivera (Brian Petroski), grandchildren Bruce MacLean II, Taryn MacLean, Katryna MacLean, Camryn MacLean, Angela Lattmann, Steven Lattmann, Samuel Lattmann, Joshua Rivera and Cristian Coix, and beloved nephews Ed Jesalva (Sally), Renato Jesalva (Noemi), Orlando Jesalva Jr (Nina), niece Josie Jesalva Barlaan (Mark - deceased), and their children and grandchildren.
Zayda was born on March 27, 1931, in the Bicol Region of the Philippines - Calundan, Sorsogon. She was the youngest of three children and made up for it with her feistiness with her siblings often calling her hard headed. During World War II, she was sent to live in a convent with the nuns and recalled having only rice to eat for several years while they were hiding from the Japanese in the mountains. She claimed this was the reason she was the shortest in her family! After college, she moved to Manila, Philippines, and met her husband, Conrado Saban Rivera, when they both worked at the same bank. Zayda said they wanted to get married in 1960 but Conrad’s oldest brother was getting married that year, and Filipino superstition says it’s bad luck for siblings to be married the same year, so Zayda and Conrad got married on New Year’s Eve 1959. They had five children from 1960 - 1967 with every other child surviving infancy - Lilibeth (1960 - present), Arthur (1960), Rosalina (1962 - present), Angela (born sometime between 1963-1966?), Harold (1967-1999).
Zayda and Conrad moved their family to the United States in October 1968 where she and her husband worked different shifts so someone could be at home with the children, leaving them alone for only two hours at a time during the work week. They very proudly bought their home in Mount Prospect, IL in 1970 where they lived until their passing.
Zayda worked for United Airlines for many years and took advantage of the free flight benefits (standby) by going on many weekend trips (New York, New Orleans, etc.) with her family so no one would have to take off work or school. They also took longer vacations to visit relatives in other states as well as the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, London, and Tokyo.
Zayda wanted everyone to experience free flight benefits and tried her hardest to get her children and grandchildren to work for United (just a few miles from her house), but only Harold followed in her footsteps. She loved those benefits and thought nothing of going to Boston for the day to buy lobster or Australia for a “long weekend.” She and Conrad also went on many international trips and tours after their children left home. Las Vegas was a favorite destination since Conrad enjoyed entering slot tournaments. Zayda didn’t play but went with Conrad to make sure he didn’t give away all his winnings to the other friends/relatives who also made the trip if he won! But, the appeal may also have been the free accommodations and drum roll - buffets! Buffets, in Las Vegas and at home, were the Holy Grail, especially when they offered senior discounts! All you can eat for one discounted price! People witnessed them secretly wrapping food in napkins to take home! One of their grandchildren fondly remembers Grandma offering her an eggroll from her purse while dining at a Culver’s! Hopefully that egg roll was fresh! Zayda, now known as Grandma Teddy, loved her grandchildren and enjoyed their company. Grandma Teddy and Grandpa flew to Nashville to help Lilibeth and Bruce move into their new home in 1994 when Bruce II had just turned three. The men were out shopping for the house, so Lilibeth, Grandma Teddy, and Bruce II went out to eat but Bruce II refused his food and loudly shouted NO! Grandma Teddy to the rescue - she jumped in her seat as if startled and said, “Oh, you scared me! That was such a loud NO!” Bruce II started laughing and Grandma put a spoonful of food in his open mouth and he chewed and swallowed! Once again he shouted NO, she jumped, he laughed, she put food in his mouth - rinse and repeat - until his whole meal was gone! No tantrums, no battle of wills! A couple of years later, Grandma and Grandpa went back to Nashville to babysit Bruce II and toddler Taryn. When Lilibeth and Papa Bruce returned home, they found both children on the outside steps very happily eating a colorful character popsicle! Food (especially sweets) equaled love for Grandma Teddy and her little grandchildren agreed! Several years later, Katryna was born, and neither Papa Bruce nor Lilibeth could get her to stop crying. Grandma Teddy to the rescue again! She swaddled that baby, bounced her up and down while walking the hallway and sang a song forever known as the Katryna song and, lo and behold, that baby stopped crying!
Ask her other grandchildren, and they will probably tell you similar stories.
Zayda was a deeply religious and devout Catholic. When she, Conrad, and Lilibeth went to the Philippines in 2016, Zayda always said her nightly prayers. At home, she would go to Mass every weekend and the middle of the week. When Covid hit, she watched the 6:00 pm mass every day on TV. She loved and found comfort in the church rituals and ceremonies. Zayda was generous. If someone made an off-hand comment about liking a certain food or item in her house, she would offer to send it home with them! It got to the point where you definitely would think twice about expressing appreciation for anything in her home. Even saying an innocent comment like liking limes, mangos, avocados or whatever may result in you being sent home with a case! She would make a point of looking for your “favorite” item on every shopping trip from then on and ask when you are visiting next since she just bought you, oh say a dozen avocados or three dozen limes!
Like all people, Zayda lost friends and family, but many would agree that there is no bigger tragedy than losing a child, so it was a dark time when Harold drowned in Kauai shortly after his 32nd birthday in 1999 while he, his wife Melissa, Melissa’s sister Julie and brother-in-law Tony, were on vacation celebrating what they thought was their last hurrah before Melissa gave birth to their son Joshua.
Then, in early 2021, just a year after the pandemic started, Conrad had a series of health setbacks and the doctors said there was nothing more they could do so he was sent to hospice at home in February of that year. Zayda told him he had to wait three years before dying (when asked why three years, she just shrugged). Maybe he didn’t have his hearing aids in or maybe he was just used to not really listening since he died peacefully in his sleep less than a week after coming home from the hospital. He was 94 and she was mad! And, of course, sad. That March 27th of 2021 was her 90th birthday, and her brother’s two children, Ed and Josie, thoughtfully and generously flew into town from California and North Carolina to throw her a wonderful catered birthday celebration. Windows were thrown open, hand sanitizer dispensed before entering the house, one person serving the catered food, disposable plates and flatware, and other precautions resulted in a much-needed distraction. The food was delicious and no one got sick! Zayda had several caregivers in the years after Conrad’s death, but Jackie Millares and Julia Gamez were her favorites with Julia becoming like a third daughter to her. They took her to doctor appointments, church, friends’ houses and outings to botanical gardens, zoos, discount-Tuesday movies, Bingo. Jackie drove Zayda two hours each way so that Zayda could attend Camryn’s dance concert at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, and Julia drove her those same two hours each way (on her day off!) so Zayda could attend Camryn’s college graduation!
On Thursday evening, February 8th, Zayda fell and hit her head, and very nonchalantly told Julia on Friday, February 9th when Julia came for her shift. Julia, alarmed, wanted to take her to the hospital right away, but Zayda refused saying Friday was Bingo day! Julia agreed to go to Bingo if they could go to the hospital right after. That was a great call since the scans revealed a brain bleed and she was immediately admitted. Her medications were tweaked with the intent to dry up the bleed but they found that she was still leaking into her brain membrane on Sunday so they scheduled her for a procedure on Monday to “super glue” the leak. She later complained to Lilibeth that it hurt when the catheter reached her brain; she was surprised that she was awake for it! She was transferred to a regular room near rehab a week or so later. But, something was wrong - she had stomach pains, was vomiting, coughing and having difficulty breathing. The medical team took her off all food with no supplemental IV since they were afraid this would aggravate her lungs, so she only had ice chips for several days. She was visited by respiratory therapy four times a day as well. The doctors think her symptoms were the result of aspirating food caused by not protecting her airway when swallowing. She progressed nicely and her medical team had a speech therapist evaluate her swallow reflex and took an x-ray of her swallowing her food. She was then allowed to have thickened liquids and finely-cut food which made her very happy since she was so hungry after several days of not eating! The next step was to transfer her to a sub-acute facility (physical therapy is not as intense) and, luckily, her insurance approved the rehab facility where Julia worked! Julia treated her like a queen! She made sure all the staff knew that Zayda was HERS and pampered and spoiled her, taking her laundry home to do herself so it wouldn’t get lost, staying past her shift so she could update the next shift and making sure everyone treated Zayda well! Zayda was a VIP at the facility with notes of “I Love You!” posted all over and other residents looked at her enviously when they saw her stream of visitors. Melissa had flown in from Florida, her daughters, various grandchildren and their significant others, and friends also came to say hello. Julia would also come on her days off even though she saw her at work. But grandson Sam deserves special mention. He was/is a godsend. He visited almost every day (at the hospital and rehab facility), wiped her mouth when she vomited, and just overall took such good loving care of her.
Zayda was progressing nicely and was scheduled to go home on March 21. Transport had been arranged to first go to the hospital for a CAT scan and a neurologist consultation immediately after, but that never happened.
On Thursday morning, March 14, nurse Christina reported that she had brought Zayda her food tray and Zayda asked her why she was the one bringing her the tray since she was the nurse manager. Shouldn’t the floor nurse be the one to do that? Zayda ate all her breakfast and even asked for seconds of the Cream of Wheat (blended so she could easily drink it), got dressed and put on makeup. An aide assisted with her request to go to the bathroom, and that was it. The aide returned a minute later to find Zayda had coded. The staff tried resuscitation efforts but she was unresponsive and declared dead at 10:00 am.
Sam said she had been having frequent dreams recently of her husband and son telling her to go to them, so she must have found their summons too appealing. Plus, there was that mysterious three-year timeframe she had talked about in February 2021. So, maybe she just knew it was time to go. We picture her joyously greeting Harold, hugging and kissing him over and over again, then getting right in the groove of ordering her husband around, and, of course, playing Mahjong with her other relatives. Mom/Teddy/Grandma Teddy/Lola/Tita Teddy - we wanted more time with you but are happy knowing you are with those you missed every day and are now in their loving arms. Until we meet again - love you forever!

Theodore M Gross - December 31, 1929 - March 12, 2024

Departed: 03/12/2024 (Mount Prospect)
Obituary Preview: Theodore (Ted) M. Gross, a 70-year resident of Mt. Prospect, IL, born on December 31, 1929 in Chicago to Theodore and Marie Gross, died Tuesday. March 12, 2024, surrounded in love by his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, and his great great grandchildren. Ted was a believer in Jesus Christ, he is home in heaven, with his Lord and Savior.
Ted worked as a Market and Store Manager at Jewel Food Stores for 41 years. Together with his loving wife Ruth of 60 years, Ted raised 6 children. Early in his career Ted looked forward to spending his spare time with his family.
Ted was a founding member of St. Emily’s Parish and remained dedicated to his Catholic Faith. Ted started a local Cub Scout Pack 235 at St. Emily’s Catholic School. He was active in the Parish, including helping with the Parish Picnics at the food pavilion.
Upon his retirement from Jewel, Ted, together with his beloved Ruth, spent his time traveling; gardening; doting on his 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; visiting with his friends; hosting annual Christmas Parties for family, friends, and neighbors; attending daily and Saturday Mass at St. Emily’s Catholic Church followed by dinner with the Ushers; and otherwise enjoying life to its fullest.
More than anything Ted was a man that loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed teaching his children how to maintain the garden, properly tend to the yard, how to repair cars, how to cook a roast, how to carve a turkey, and most importantly how to love your spouse and family fully and unconditionally.
As Ted’s family grew, so did the number of people at the Sunday dinner. Most Sunday dinners were followed by Ted’s slide projector “movies” assembled from the thousands of pictures detailing his favorite family memories.
Ted loved to sing for Ruth, whether it was at home while playing his organ, or while holding Ruth’s hands during a long drive to their favorite country restaurants. As the family grew, all of Ted’s grandchildren, and later many of his great grandchildren, were excited to get the opportunity to sit on grandpa’s lap and play the organ while Ted sang songs.
Ted’s love of music was shared with numerous members of his family, and Ted tried to attend as many of his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s school concerts as possible. Ted also enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s many sports and other school events. Ted and Ruth spent significant time chauffeuring their grandchildren to and from colleges, airports, and anywhere else they needed to go.
Later in life Ted enjoyed working in the shop that he built. In his shop he made original clocks, tables, teddy bear chairs, anniversary hearts, and other items which Ted graciously provided to his friends and family. Many of these items hang on the walls of homes in states across the country.
In recent years, the majority of Ted’s time was spent honoring his life with Ruth by continuing to regularly visit, relish, and love every member of his family’s 5 generations.
Ted is survived by his children, Theodore (Jane Leary) Gross of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; Michael (Linda) Gross of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin; Arleen (Dan) Barrell of Salt Lake City, Utah; Sharon (Brian) Bartley of Palatine, Illinois; Mary (Rick) Karst of Hampshire, Illinois; Kenneth Gross of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.
Ted was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth; his parents Theodore and Marie Gross; his mother and father-in-law Kenneth and Mary Griffiths; his sisters Marguerite King, Mary Adams, and Loretta Kedzie; his daughter-in-law Lynda Fitzgerald Gross (Theodore); and his nephew Joseph King.
Visitation will be held Monday, March 18, 2024, from 4 pm to 8 pm at Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Road, (at Northwest Highway) Mount Prospect, IL 60056.
