Clifton La Bree - June 25, 1933 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Goffstown)
Obituary Preview: Clifton (Pops) LaBree, aged 90, long-time resident of New Boston, NH died peacefully on January 19, 2024 at the home of his daughter Vivian and son-in-law Chet Sytnik; loving caretakers for the last year of his life, in Bradner, Ohio.  Over time, as his hair grayed and thinned on top, Cliff, affectionately became “Pops” to all who knew him.
He is pre-deceased by wives, Yolande Coache, Pauline Robie, son, Kevin LaBree and his four siblings: Frances, Gerald, Raymond and Barbara. He is survived by daughters: Evelyn LaBree of Rochester NH, Vivian Sytnik, Sharon LaBree of Mount Vernon; sons: Michael LaBree and Gerald LaBree of Hillsborough, NH, and step-son Richard Robie of Naples, Florida. Pops enjoyed his role as patriarch of the La Bree clan, which included numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. Born in Monson, Maine June 25, 1933, to Raymond and Evelyn (Heaney) LaBree, the middle child of five siblings, Pops often regaled his children with tales of growing up in his beloved hometown. He spent his teens and early 20s in Wells, ME where he met Yolande Coache. They married in 1954 during his senior year at UNH where he completed a degree in Forestry
Science.
In 1959, leaving his first professional position at the U.S. Forestry Service in Lake George NY, Pops purchased a 400-acre farm in New Boston, New Hampshire.  He started a forestry consulting business and for years pursued his passion of forestry management.  Mid-career he opened a pallet business across the street from his home and spent several decades making wood pallets for Anheuser Busch in Merrimack NH from trees he felled on his property.  Pop’s working for a brewery brought chuckles to those who knew him to be an avid coffee drinker, never himself, imbibing.
Losing his wife of 22 years to leukemia in 1977, Pops was left to raise their six children ranging in ages from 13 to 22. Pops practiced forest management on his own property, periodically overseeing timber sales and visitors would often see him operating his tractor, chainsaw tied to the back of his seat, with a log or two that he felled in the forest, chained behind him. One or two of his children would often be in the cab with him, or riding in the tractor bucket.
In 1984 he married Pauline Robie.  The couple sold the family farmhouse to Bruce and Elaine Tostevin, divided the land, and built a small home nearby that had spectacular views of the Uncanoonuc Mountains.  On a clear day, Pops relished viewing Mount Agamenticus in his beloved state of Maine. This home was their sanctuary for 29 years, until, in 2013, Pauline lost her battle with COPD.
Pops did not marry again; though he did cherish his friendship with June Goss that spanned several years. When she became ill with pancreatic cancer, Pops insisted on caring for her in his home until she passed in 2022.
His love of life never wavered though he buried three women he loved and survived the loss of his youngest son, Kevin, 38, in an ATV accident in 2002. He found solace in the tranquil forests that surrounded his secluded, hilltop home. The woodlands were always central to Pop's life and livelihood. He enjoyed the solitude afforded him in the forest and spoke often of how grateful he was to have his passion for forestry management as his life’s work. When Pops retired, he took up writing full time. A long-time student of military history, Pops was a frequent contributor to military magazines.  He spent years writing and researching his first book, The Gentle Warrior, a biography of General Oliver P. Smith, an unsung hero of the Korean war, which was published by Kent State Press. The book was highly acclaimed in military circles and by historians. Throughout his retirement Pops wrote and published more than a dozen historical romance novels and a well-received biography of New Hampshire’s General
John Stark.
Pops will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a prolific author. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him and in the pages of the books he authored.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on June 29, 2024, at the French & Rising Funeral Home in Goffstown, NH. Interment of his ashes will immediately follow at the family graveyard on Wilson Hill Road in New Boston.
