James R. Leddy - November 29, 1925 - January 18, 2024

Departed: 01/18/2024 (Theresa)
Obituary Preview: James R. Leddy, 98, long-time resident of Philadelphia, passed away Thursday January 18, 2024 at Samaritan Summit Village, Watertown, NY.
Jim was born November 29, 1925 to Francis and Pauline Kepler Leddy at Mercy Hospital, Watertown, NY. He lived in Felts Mills until he was 1 ½ years old, at which time his family, which included his sister Jeannette, moved to the farm in Copenhagen.
Jim attended a one-room schoolhouse for 5 years on Number Three Road and then went to school at the newly centralized Copenhagen Central School. Dad fondly remembered several of his teachers, ag and shop classes, and the hot showers in the new gymnasium! He graduated from there in 1943.
That same year, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, needing his dad’s permission and signature as he was not yet 18. His mom worried about seeing her son go off to World War II, but she was always proud of him. And he in turn always loved his mom so much.
Jim served primarily in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea aboard the destroyer USS Boyle and was honorably discharged in 1946. In later years after his retirement, he and Helen attended all but one of the ship’s reunions, traveling around the country meeting up with old shipmates and their families. Dad talked about those trips for years after. He was a proud Navy veteran.
Ahh Helen, his soulmate and best friend, whom he married on August 15, 1947. He remembers first seeing her at a dance in Great Bend, where she was dancing with her sister, Eleanor. Ma and Dad went on to attend many country and western dances together in the early years. That music would sustain him through the days when Helen was gone and he would reminisce about their many years together.
Jim worked construction until 1948 when he went to work at the St. Regis Paper Mill in Deferiet, NY. He would retire from there in 1987 with 39 years of service in the No. 2 Cutter room. Jim and Helen bought their house on Church Street in Philadelphia in 1949, moving in with their two small children, Kathleen and Gary. Over the years, they would be joined by Roger and Rosalie. The renovation of the house was a labor of love for them and it became a warm, cozy home where family, friends, and neighbors were all welcome. They and family members could often be seen sitting on the front porch through many summers. And it was a place where their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren could come to Grandpa and have him fix just about anything. Mostly because he always had plenty of spare parts hanging around as he didn’t like to throw much away. You never know when you might need that doodad or piece of wood!
Jim and Helen would live together there until 2018, when Helen entered skilled nursing. Jim lived there alone until 2021, when he went to live at Samaritan Summit Village Assisted Living. This allowed him to continue to live independently and to see Helen every day until her death on August 14, 2022, one day shy of their 75th wedding anniversary.
Jim is survived by 3 of his 4 his children; Kathleen Pike, Phoenix, NY; Roger Leddy, Philadelphia, NY; Rosalie and David Wadsworth, Clinton, NY. He also leaves 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Helen, his son Gary and his wife Judy, his son-in-law Richard Pike, and his daughter-in-law Suzanne Leddy. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jeannette Haver.
In honor of Dad’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services for both Jim and Helen will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, NY.
