On Friday April 5, at 95 years old Bill Collins exhaled his last breath surrounded by his daughters and wonderful caregivers. Bill’s life began in Detroit on June 27, 1928. He was the oldest of 4 children with brother Ray and two sisters Jane and Joanne. He graduated from McKenzie High and went to Michigan State University for his degree in criminal justice. He married Lois E Thompson in 1951 and was hired by the new city of Livonia’s Police Department. At that time, Livonia was an agricultural community with lots of open fields and woods. As an avid outdoorsman Bill would hunt rabbits and pheasants in the city with his beagle. Bill and Lois had 4 children, Gary, Linda, Michael and Janice and all went to St. Michael’s in Livonia and Linda and Janice went to Ladywood. Bill built 4 houses in Livonia, 2 on Mayfield Ave and 2 on Richfield St. Summers in the 60’s were spent on the Wingy Dingy in Lake Erie and up to Caseville at Toot’s cottage with Al, Frank and Craig. In the late 70’s he regularly hunted in Wyoming with Michael and Wade. After 30 years in law enforcement, including time at the FBI academy, he retired as a Detective Lieutenant. After his retirement, Lois and Bill built their last home in Plymouth on 10 acres where Bill planted Christmas trees, rode his horse Bidohoney and raised chickens and geese. The grandchildren all remember this special piece of paradise. After Lois passed in 1998 and his property sold in the early 00’s, Bill eventually found a home in Ludington, Michigan with great neighbors, friends, markets, church and a nice walk to the beach. During this period he would try to spend a couple months in the winter on the gulf coast of Florida where he developed more friendships that endure to this day. As age presented some challenges, Bill moved to Lambertville, Michigan to be near Janice and Fred. As more assistance was needed, family, neighbors, and some dedicated caregivers were there to help him. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Lois, his brother Ray and wife Aggie, sister Jane and husband Joe and son Michael (Stacy). He is survived by his sister Joanne, children, Gary (Linda), Linda (Bob), Janice and Stacy and numerous nieces and nephews. He has 7 grandchildren, Nick (Courtney), Galvin (Rebecca), Mike (Liz), Steph (Artur), Dustin (Amy), Meghan (Chris) and Michelle. He has 13 great grandchildren. Bill took pride in his health and exercise was part of it. He set a good example but his mantra that “Work is Fun” was not always appreciated. He will be missed by all. The family wants to thank Heartland Hospice for their compassionate guidance and all those that helped Bill over the years especially Denise, Dianna and Chris.

Phyllis was born in Detroit on April 5, 1940 to George and Angeline Funk. Phyllis grew up in Detroit, attending Cass Technical High School, and graduating from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in winter of 1963, the first in her family to do so. Phyllis was a proud founding member of Michigan Opera Theater (now Detroit Opera), worked for and was heavily involved with supporting the growing opera company for most of her life. Phyllis graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1986, and spent the next 16 years of her career as a research attorney with the Michigan Court of Appeals, before retiring in 2002. She enjoyed time with family and friends, attending opera performances in Detroit and all over the country, running, and bicycling. She had a deep interest in what others had to say, and loved to learn about, and from, most everyone she encountered. Phyllis is survived by her beloved brother Wayne (Marilyn) Funk of Washington Twp., her beloved children Jonathan (Marianne) of Troy, Jennifer (John Kennedy) of Farmington Hills, George (Tamara) of Rochester Hills, her cherished grandson Harrison and step grandsons Corey and Adam (Emily), great-grandson Leo the Lion, her former husband Neil (Barbara) Snow of Hilton Head, SC., along with many nieces and nephews now spanning multiple generations. Erna Heck, 90, entered her heavenly home on March 15, 2024. Cherished Mother of Heidy (Robert), Walter Junior and the late Harry. Proud Oma of Steven Heck, Blake, Brady and the late Bobby Nance. Also survived by many other loving family and friends.

Erna was a loving, devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt. Her passions included cooking and gardening. She enjoyed making her special food for family and their friends. She always looked forward to Spring and the start of many projects in her garden, such as growing vegetables and expanding her beautiful flower garden.

Erna was the youngest of 6 children born to Matthaus and Katharina Holl. All sibling preceded her in death. Born in Lithuania in 1933, the family was forced by the Soviets to move and settle in Germany. Erna emigrated to the United States in 1951. She was proud of her German Heritage. She began as a domestic worker, went on to be a UAW seamstress in an auto factory, then became a business owner for years. After that, she continued her education to receive an Associate’s Degree in Accounting where she was on the Honors List. She worked in that field for a number of years.

Erna was a Livonia Police Department Volunteer Probation Officer for 35 years. She enjoyed traveling to many places in the world with her family and friends. Special memories remain of when she took the whole family on a cruise in 2007.

Erna was a long-time member of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church. She was active in Sunday School teaching, Vacation Bible School and felt a special calling in her time dedicated to meal prep for the Family of God Ministry. Her strong faith and love were evident in all she did. Her loved touched many lives.

Marilyn Margaret Kashat, age 86 of Howell, formerly of Livonia, went home to be with our Lord on March 6, 2024.

Marilyn was born to the late Victor and Patricia Randall on May 11, 1937. She was the second oldest of 12 brothers and sisters. She was born and raised in Detroit and attended Christ the King elementary school and Mercy High School. At the age of 16, Marilyn was called to Jesus where she entered the Little Sisters of the Poor Roman Catholic religious order.

For 10 years she served the Lord by caring for seniors in the home of the Little Sisters and cooked for staff and residents.

Before making her final vows to the sisterhood, Marilyn had a different calling to have a family and be a mother.

After joining the workforce and teaching herself how to drive, she met the love of her life, a handsome immigrant, her future husband, Amir Kashat. They would have been married 60 years on May 2, 2024.

Marilyn was a devoted wife and mother and, together she and Amir raised 3 children. Marilyn ran a craft business with her father early in her marriage, and taught decoupage and other craft classes. She was a talented dollmaker having produced hundreds of porcelain and laced draped dolls, mostly for her collection and close family and friends. When her kids came home from school, they often found her at the kitchen table hand painting the dolls, making porcelain flowers and crafting their outfits.

Marilyn’s favorite style was Victorian and many dolls carried that theme in their clothing, hair and accessories.

Marilyn, as the matriarch, was known for many things, including being a fabulous cook always ensuring her friends and family were well fed when they came to visit. She loved to entertain and prided herself on  providing unique and delicious entrees. She learned to cook Chaldean food and it became a fast favorite among her family.

Marilyn was a giver.  She was generous beyond words. For Marilyn to give much was to receive much.

She was blessed with grandchildren, her Six Angels as she referred to them.

Christmas was her most favorite holiday. She delighted in spoiling her children and grandchildren with more gifts than they ever needed and so much love. She had a big heart and they knew they were very loved by her.

Her favorite things in this world were her love for God, her husband, and  being a mother to her children: Tony, Tina and Kevin; and a grandmother to her grandchildren; Karlie, Allyssa, Joshua, Jake, Cooper and Ava Marilyn-Rose, and great granddaughter, Sophia.

Marilyn never wavered in her faith. She encouraged her family to love the Lord, say your prayers and go to mass.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Patricia Randall.  She was the cherished wife of Amir Kashat; Beloved mother of Anthony (Mary), Tina (Dan) Casoli, and Kevin (Angela).  Treasured Grandma of Karlie (Jacob) Satin, Allyssa Kashat, Joshua Kashat, Jake Casoli, Cooper Casoli, and Ava Casoli.  Adored great-grandma of Sophia Satin.

Marilyn is also survived by siblings; Sist. Mary Patricia Randall, Mike Randall, Liz Newton, Peg Kazmarski (Ted), Joe Randall (Cyndi), Jerry Randall (Penny), and Terri Haskell; and brother-in-law, Ken Brach and sisters-in-law, Sue Randall, Nancy Randall, and Ellen Randall.

She is preceded in death by her parents; Victor and Patricia (Farmer) Randall, and siblings; Vic Randall, Rosemary Charron (Tom), Phil Randall, Tony Randall, Mary Brach, brother-in-law Bob Newton.

Michael passed away at home in Livonia, on February 26, 2024, at the age of 76, a short time after being diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Beloved husband of Marcelline for 50 wonderful years. Loving father of Kristen (Joshua) Weaver and Michelle (Jeremy) Bachelor. Cherished grandpa of Avery, Caleb, Landon, and Arianna. Dear brother of Judy LaPorte. He leaves behind many other loving family members and friends. Michael was born on August 23rd, 1947 to Frank and Josephine Esparza in Detroit Michigan. After Michael graduated from high school in 1965, he started his first job at Ford Motor Company working the line followed by Uniroyal. He then went on to study finances at Madonna University. After graduating with a degree in finances and computer programming, he completed a 40+ year career in finances with Chrysler, DaimlerChrysler, and Mercedes-Benz. In 2010, Michael retired and spent his time doing things that he loved including enjoying the great outdoors, traveling, and spending time with his family. Michael participated in many outdoor sports such as mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, wakeboarding, and snow skiing. He was always up for a challenge or adventure, and stayed fit through lifting weights, exercising and enjoying these activities with his wife and family. He also loved “tinkering with things,” building/engineering, researching, and working on countless projects. He was a “do it yourself” kind of guy, and always had his wife Marcy at his side to help with all his projects. His greatest joy in life was spending time and making memories with his family, playing with the grandkids, being at the cottage in Pinckney, and supporting his family. His diagnosis came as a great shock and deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who have loved him deeply. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time. Michael had faith in God, was a practicing Catholic, and is now in his Heavenly home with Jesus.

Mary Kathleen (Kathy) Pardo, born February 17, 1947, passed from this life Feb. 23, 2024, 7:09 p.m. at Angela Hospice in Livonia, MI. She is survived by husband of 57 years, Gary, and her seven children, Michael (Patricia); Patrice Bruen (Arthur), Denise Smith (Mark), Erin Wolyniak (Douglas), Thomas (Christel); Joy Treganowan (Jason); and Melissa O’Connell, (Daniel). She is also survived by her sister Joan, her brother David, 17 grandchildren, 3 great grand-children. She is preceded in death by her parents, Josephine and Floyd Gardner, her step-father Roy, and 8 siblings.

Kathy received communion in the morning and then, surrounded by all of her children and her husband, evening prayers. After the last child went home, just as she wanted, she went home to the Father.

To an acquaintance, Kathy was always kind with a smile and a nod. She might judge their taste in fashion but never their character.

To a fellow sports fan, she was the most loyal. Especially of the Tigers (cemented by her Hall of Famer Uncle Charlie Gehringer) but also love for the Lions. She would cheer on her Detroit teams and never missed a game no matter how the team was performing.

To a colleague, Kathy was willing to offer support or a helping hand and could be trusted to provide a candid solution to any problem. She always made time to listen and showed genuine concern.

To a friend, Kathy had the warmest greetings and a quickest wit. Friends knew her home was a sacred place that was never closed. Coffee was made, something warm and delicious was prepared, and no reservation was required. To a niece or nephew, Kathy was a favorite aunt. She proudly baked and decorated every wedding cake with beauty and love. At family gatherings, she brought the most delicious food and reminded everyone that it is “better to have too much than not enough.”

To a brother or sister, Kathy was the baby, but also the rock. Those who lived across the country knew everything at home was okay because she and Blandine were there to hold down the fort.  She carried the legacy of her mother with grace and pride, making space in her home if anyone needed to stay.

To a grandchild, she was the loudest cheerleader. The performances were all for her pleasure and approval, whether it was playing a sport, acting in the school play, singing in the choir, marching in the band, graduations (including from boot camp) and so much more.  And she loved all of her grandchildren equally, but not the same, because she saw how unique and incredibly special each was.

To a son or daughter, she is the mold from where they came.  Every time a meal is shared or a loaf of bread, or a pie comes out of the oven, she is there. Every hug and embrace received from them has her warmth and comfort. If you drop by, and they hope that you do, they will invite you in with a cup of coffee, and you will know that it is really her.

To Gary, she was a caretaker, partner in faith and love. But mostly a best friend. Their shared love for God was the foundation for their 57 years of marriage. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” - Maya Angelou

Lois moved with her family to Detroit in the 6th grade. Lois met Ronald Betts hanging at a spot they called Little Tasty’s. They were married in 1953. Ronald and Lois had 4 beautiful girls together. They moved to Livonia in 1973. She enjoyed listening to music, shopping, playing dominoes and cards, reading the newspaper and watching classic movies. As a Grandma, she spoiled her grandchildren with love and good food. Lois took pride in her amazing cooking and hosted unforgettable family gatherings. Lois’ most notorious pet was an orange cat named Tom who lived to be 22. She shared the word of God with just about everyone she talked to. When not at home, Lois could be found having a meal at her favorite spots; Sandy’s, Kirby’s or Steve’s. Lois will be remembered for her strength in the face of hard times, for her laughter especially at herself and for being the best conversationalist.
