Marilyn Ririe Boots - September 17, 1935 - July 28, 2023

Departed: 07/28/2023 (Preston )
Obituary Preview: Marilyn Ririe Boots, 87, of Star Valley Ranch Wyoming, died at home on Friday, July 28th, after a long struggle with diabetes. Marilyn was born in Logan, Utah, on September 17th, 1935, to the late Walter Fielding Ririe and Estel (Hyer) Ririe. Descended from Mormon pioneers who crossed the plains, Marilyn was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As the third of five daughters, Marilyn had an idyllic childhood and often expressed her gratitude and love for her parents’ examples of faith and service to others in the Church and community.
While a student at Brigham Young University, she was riding in a car on State Street in Provo when a group of fellow students, “boys from Idaho,” pulled up next to them. One of those “boys,” Will Boots, was smitten with her. During their courtship, they enjoyed attending sporting events together, hiking, playing tennis, and driving in the canyons. Will once said he married Marilyn because she was the only girl who could hike and make it to the top of the mountain with him.
They married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on August 27th, 1957. Marilyn graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Nursing. She worked as a full-time nurse at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake while Will completed his studies.
Marilyn loved music. She played clarinet in her high school marching band and enjoyed playing the piano all her life. When her children were having a difficult time getting out of bed in the morning (which was most mornings), Marilyn would go to the living room piano and play and sing as loudly as she could, “Rise and shout the Cougars are out!” (BYU Fight Song) to wake them. Sometimes it worked.
Marilyn and Will raised their children in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Many dear, life-long relationships were made during this special time. While there, her Church service included serving as Relief Society president twice, the Stake Young Women’s presidency, and the Stake Relief Society presidency. Marilyn had an amazing capacity and desire to serve others in her community as well. She was a volunteer hospice worker, delivered food through “Meals on Wheels,” and assisted as a nurse at the Oklahoma Children’s Shelter. She enjoyed attending Oklahoma Sooner football games with Will and friends.
Marilyn and her husband served a two-year stake mission in the Thayne Stake, where they prepared and attended all missionary baptisms and assisted missionaries with new converts.
In addition to her parents, Marilyn was predeceased by her siblings, Diane Ririe (who passed away at age 7) and Gerri Whiting.
Marilyn is survived by her husband of 66 wonderful years. She is also survived by her children, Cheryl (Ron) Lawson, Dennis (Christy) Boots, Jay (Tina) Boots, and her sisters, Loretta Stark and Carol Hiatt.
Marilyn was an extraordinary grandma and deeply loved, nurtured, and cared for her grandchildren. She taught them the Gospel of Jesus Christ by example. They are Holly (Gavin) Rogers, Cory James, Lindsey Nicole, and Jolie Christina Boots. Marilyn’s first great-grandchild is due in October. Holly and Gavin will name her Remi Lyn. “Lyn” in honor and remembrance of Grandma Boots.
The Boots Family wishes to thank all those who have so kindly and lovingly cared for them, especially their dear friends and neighbors of Star Valley Ranch and the medical/hospice team, for their excellent care.
A graveside service will be held at Lewiston City Cemetery, 1000 E Ctr St Lewiston, UT, on Saturday, August 5th at 12:oo pm. All are invited to attend.
Please share a favorite memory of Marilyn or offer condolences to the family by leaving a tribute on this page.

Mitchell J Butterfield - June 23, 1954 - June 20, 2023

Departed: 06/20/2023 (Preston )
Obituary Preview: Mitchell J Butterfield, 68, died of leiomyosarcoma on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at his home in Smithfield, Utah, in the arms of his partner, sweetheart, companion, wife, and caregiver, Star Coulbrooke.
He was born on June 23, 1954, in Logan, Utah, on the west side of town, to George and Irene Butterfield. He was proud to be one of the original “latchkey kids,” free to explore the neighborhood, carouse the downtown, and roam the west fields all day while his dad drove a Wonderbread truck and his mom worked at JC Penney.
He was a middle child, bookended by his sisters Shelley and Holley. He had many lifelong friends, kids he’d gone to Ellis School with, who graduated from Logan High with him. He liked to say he graduated in “Parking Lot,” a free spirit in the late sixties and early seventies.
Known all his life as Mitch, he was “My Mitch” to Star, who met him in December of 1991, when they embarked on a 32-year-one-night stand. He said he figured out who she was right after they were introduced. He had carried her groceries out when he was a sixteen-year-old bagboy at Smith’s Food King and she was a nineteen-year-old mother of two. He even knew the cars she had driven. Then he lost track of her for about twenty years.
After his bag boy days, Mitch went into the building trades, working for various contractors around the valley. He married Nancy Hawkes in 1976. They had three children, Jasmine, Dylan, and Chelsea. He built their house in Richmond at only 24 years of age, while working at Pepperidge Farm and studying for his general contractor’s license.
Mitch was a craftsman who took pride in his work with every occupation he held as builder, framer, finish-carpenter, and drywall contractor. He was noted for his finish work in the 1991 Ellen Eccles Theatre renovation and for the uniquely artistic plaster ceiling designs he created in houses all over the valley.
He was an artist, his creations eclectic, out of the ordinary. Hardwood tattoos, parchesi boards, woodburned/painted floral balls and boxes, club ducks, antler buttons with suspended flowers or fishing flies, and a 6-foot by 8-foot farm scene with an overlaid drafthorse made of driftwood he scavenged from the banks of Summit Creek in Smithfield City.
He loved National guitars. He started collecting them after he taught himself to play after age fifty. His dogs were his only audience until he learned to sing along with his playing and started jamming with musician friends. He graduated to banjos and began to take lessons at age sixty. He made his own guitars from found objects, including cigar boxes, sewing machine drawers, and even a bedpan. He shared his appreciation for music with friends and family, where every gathering was an invitation to pick up an instrument and strum along.
During his years with Star, he claimed to have fulfilled every dream and wish list he ever had, including owning his own business, buying a Harley, and renovating the house they lived in to make it comfortable and beautiful for their final years together. But they also lived with his cancer for twenty years, and it decided to have its turn just as the house was finished.
Mitch is survived by Star and their extended blended family, children Dylan (Ellen) Butterfield, Chelsea (Gabe) Morland, Darrin (Londyn) Freeman, Diana Mason, Laurian Escalanti (David Jones), a biological child Jason (Leslie) Olsen, 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grands, his sisters Shelley (Jerry) Gill and Holley (Wayne) Allen, many beloved nieces and nephews from their former and current marriages, Star’s siblings and their spouses, their few remaining aunts and uncles, bunches of cousins, many dear friends they claim as family, and of course by their dog Rooster and their cats Rosie and River. He was preceded in death by his parents, by a daughter, Jasmine Marie Jensen, and by all his other dogs, who are where he says he wants to be.
Mitch believes that his greatest achievement was to make himself into a kind and loving man who collected as many friends as he collected unique items with which to make his art and to leave others with a lot to remember him by. Some of his artwork will be displayed at a Celebration of Life event, to be held on Friday, July 21, 4:00 PM, at the Logan House Reception Center, located at 136 W. 100 N., Logan, Utah.  His ashes will be interred in the Smithfield City Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
Please share a favorite memory of Mitch or offer condolences to the family, by leaving a tribute on this page.

Anita Chesley Fischback - December 22, 1934 - April 23, 2023

Departed: 04/23/2023 (Preston )
Obituary Preview: Anita Fischback passed away on April 23, 2023, in Smithfield, Utah, at the age of 88. Anita was born on December 22, 1934, in Mesa, Arizona to Arthur Chesley and Alice Lamoreux. When Anita was three years old she lived with her Father and Step Mother, Lucy Curtis Chesley, her brother Ed Chesley, and her three step-siblings, Robert Western, Jerry Western, and Verda Western in Mesa, Arizona. Anita was the youngest of the four children. When Anita was a little girl everyone called her “Pete”. When Anita was 8 years old she was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by her Grandfather Ray Lamoreux and was confirmed by her Father in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Shortly thereafter Anita and the family moved to White Salmon, Washington until Anita was 13. When Anita was 13 until she was 17 she lived with her Aunt Buena and her four children. Anita went from being the youngest child to being the oldest child. It was while living with her Aunt Buena that Anita learned her nurturing and parenting skills by helping to take care of her younger cousins by babysitting and cleaning the house. When Anita was 17 and a senior in high school she moved to Pomona, California and she and her Mother, Alice, lived in an apartment together for 1 year. Anita and her Mother worked at the State Psychiatric Hospital while Anita was also attending High School.
When Anita was 18 she met the love of her life, John Fischback, at a weekly town dance in Anaheim, California. After a short whirlwind romance, John and Anita were married on January 9, 1954, in Las Vegas Nevada. Anita was an Air Force wife and she and John moved to several Air Force bases around the United States and in Germany while raising six children. In 1966 while the family was living overseas in Europe, John and Anita and their children were all sealed together for time and all eternity in the Temple in Bern, Switzerland. John and Anita were married for over 69 years up until John’s passing on April 13, 2022.
After John Retired from the Air Force in 1971 he went to work for the FAA in Alaska. Anita and her family lived in Talkeetna, AK, McGrath, AK, Kermit Texas, and Delta Junction Alaska, and then finally settled down with John and their children in Anchorage, AK in 1977. Anita always had lots of energy and ambition and liked to keep herself busy, so in 1980 she bought and ran an apartment and carpet cleaning business called “White Glove Enterprises”. The family business had serval contracts with apartment complexes all over Anchorage. Anita hired and worked with several employees along with her children, while also still raising a family and attending to her Church callings. In 1985 when Anita turned 50 she had grown tired of working and decided to give up the apartment cleaning side of the business and handed over the carpet cleaning to her son Kip. Anita was very supportive of her husband especially when John and Anita flipped several houses for several years in Anchorage. Anita was close with her mother and father and would do anything she could to help them so in 1995 when her parents’ health began to decline, Anita and John moved to Strawberry, Arizona, and bought a house that was located across the street from her father’s house and her brother Ed’s house and a block away from her mother’s house. Anita and Ed took care of their parents until they passed away. Anita and John eventually became “Snowbirds” by splitting their time during the year while living in Anchorage, AK, and Tucson, Arizona.
Anita loved and nurtured her grandchildren as if they were her own children. She made every grandchild feel like they were her favorite. Anita was a total people person, was never shy, and loved getting to know everyone she met everywhere she went. Everyone was drawn to her because she was so friendly and genuinely interested in everyone. Anita never met a stranger. It’s been said that Anita could meet someone and know their whole life story while standing in line at the DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles).
Anita is survived by her six children; Michael “Mick” (Laurel) Fischback, Kip (Nancy) Fischback, Bonnie Wright, John (Liz) Fischback, Thomas (Susan) Fischback, Samuel Fischback, and her 28 grandchildren, and 43 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday May 1, 2023, at the Utah Veterans Cemetery Chapel. Emily Rebekah Haag - September 15, 1995 - April 11, 2023

Departed: 04/11/2023 (Preston )
Obituary Preview: Emily Rebekah Haag, 27, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away in her mother’s arms on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. She is survived by her parents, John & Robyn Haag, brothers Joshua, Miles (Elise), Caleb, & Benjamin, Grandparents David & Betty Guess, Grandmother Rosetta Haag, and a multitude of cousins, aunts, uncles, and chosen family who’ve known and loved her throughout her short life. Emily was preceded in death by her Grandfather, Jerreld Haag and her Great Grandmother Virginia Hodges.
A gifted artist from a young age, she was also a budding photographer with an array of incredible photographs to her name. Recently, Emily fell in love with gardening and plants of all kinds and proudly dubbed herself a plant lady. Of course, she made a new circle of friends every time she picked up a new hobby, started a new job, or encountered a new volunteer opportunity.
After graduating from Sky View High School in 2013, Emily followed in her Dad’s footsteps and joined the United States Army, serving honorably for 6 years. During this time, Emily worked with individuals with disabilities, volunteered with Utah Families Feeding Families, and the Logan Veteran Center.
Upon completion of her service to her country, Emily continued to advocate for and serve the communities of Cache Valley who needed it most. Those who knew and loved our girl knew she was special, sensitive and tender-hearted, absolutely selfless, and a lover of people, animals, nature, art, and travel.
We will miss opening our phones to a sneak attack love bomb of Emily’s goofy face and silly selfies, and for some reason, almost always one camera view straight up her nose. Her constant stream of funny videos, sent through various social media platforms, are already sorely missed. We surely have an endless supply of videos and pictures yet undiscovered, as she would almost always have her camera out to record all the magical moments of her life.
Her sweet giggles that turned into snorts, the mischievous look she had when she was up to something hilarious, and the glow on her face when she succeeded in helping a fellow soul will be ingrained in our hearts and memories forever.
In her final rest, Emily will join the many friends she lost during her life, including Carson, Amanda, Brayden, and Elva. She was especially close to Elva “Lala” Torres, a battle buddy and close friend until Lala’s unexpected passing in 2019. Those who knew and loved both Emily and Lala would probably heartily agree that these two have likely already founded the first E4 Mafia of the afterlife.
In keeping with her generous spirit and desire to give everything she had, Emily’s last act of love and sacrifice was to donate her kidneys to two individuals who we hope and pray live very long and healthy lives.
Services to celebrate Emily’s life will be held at 11:00 am Saturday April 22, 2023 at the LDS Stake Center located at 451 S 250 E, Smithfield, Utah. In lieu of gifts and flowers, the family is accepting memorial donations. You can donate directly to the funeral home to help with Emily’s memorial fees by following this link Donate To Funeral or through the GoFundMe account that has been set up.
We also invite you to share a favorite memory or contribute pictures here on her tribute wall for a memorial video to be played at her service.
