David Matthew Kellems - April 04, 1971 - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (La Porte)
Obituary Preview: David Matthew Kellems was born in Michigan City, Indiana on April 4, 1971, the son of Jack and Mary Kellems. David passed away in Indianapolis on April 22, 2022, following a brave battle with cancer.
He was also affectionately known as “Captain Dave” for his boating adventures or simply “The Daver”. Throughout his life he was surrounded by tons of friends; friendships that date back to Kindergarten at Crichfield and many more from his days in Terre Haute, Chicago and Indianapolis.
Dave lived life to the fullest and was immediately loved by everyone that met him. Dave loved to entertain his friends and loved the water, particularly Pine Lake. He was famous for hosting 4th of July parties that often extended into the following day, where he was joined by his friends as they delighted many on the lake with a spectacular fireworks show.
David graduated from La Porte High School in 1989 and received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University where he was also a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. David worked in a variety of corporate sales positions where he was extremely successful and won numerous awards based on his warm personality and strong work ethic.
The folks at Indiana Rehabilitation Hospital in Carmel were amazed at the constant stream of friends that came to visit following his stroke. They didn’t bat an eye when someone brought a cold beer which he readily drank or some of his favorite foods which his friends helped feed him! As his health declined, Dave never complained and handled it with grace. He felt fortunate to have been able to see his son Jack grow into a fine young man which bought him much peace. Jack was truly the best thing that ever happened to him and one of his proudest accomplishments.
David is survived by his son Jack, his mother, Mary, brothers Duane, Bill (Proaw) and Mike; nieces Corianne Kellems and Catherine Trusty. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack, sisters Chris and Cindy, nephew Jack “JD” Kellems, Aunt Margret Sassetti, Uncle John Ott, Great-Grandmother Helen Weiler, Grandparents Phil and Florence Ott, Grandmother Jenetta Kellems and Grandmother Agnes Scaduto. “The Daver” also leaves behind a plethora of friends too numerous to list. To know Dave was to love Dave.  His legacy will live forever in the many great stories his friends will continue to keep alive and is the definition of what great friendships are all about. Dave was so blessed to have you all as friends; please know you are all so deeply appreciated!
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Thelma would later suffer a brain aneurysm, stroke, emergency pacemaker, numerous infections and illnesses, and transplant rejection. Each time, she battled back with strength and determination. She continually defied the odds and did so with grace, gratitude, kindness, and humble courage. Thelma was a huge inspiration to those who knew and loved her, including her outstanding team of doctors at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Despite her health issues, Thelma enjoyed every moment, especially with her grandchildren. She attended every event she could or watched via Facebook Live, and for the ones she could not, Thelma insisted on a detailed report afterward. Thelma formed lasting bonds with each grandchild, routinely beat them at Yahtzee, and took tremendous pride in all they did. She was their #1 fan. She loved fiercely and deeply, and we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace surrounded by light. Thelma is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Martin Eigenmann Jr, and their children Darrin (Kelly) Eigenmann and Dana (Adam) Ehrlich; Siblings Harold Bennitt Jr and Judy (the late Ronald) Harenza; Grandchildren Amanda, Tyler, Emily, Brady, Joshua, Isabelle and Olivia along with many friends and family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Harold Bennitt Sr. Visitation will be held at Paul Funeral Home, 240 N. Kingshighway, Saint Charles, MO 63301, on Sunday, March 20, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, with service beginning at 2:30 pm. Burial will be directly after at Oak Grove Cemetery. All C.S.T. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing, funeral arrangements, and any memorial services. They can also help notify people who may not have been aware of the person's death.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or accomplishments. You may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's best to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 100-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to share memories and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their story is told accurately and authentically. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes and memories.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's also okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing. This can help capture the essence of the person's spirit and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or difficult aspects of the person's life or death, it's essential to approach these topics with compassion and tact. Consider consulting with family members or close friends to ensure you're representing the person accurately and respectfully.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and continue their legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Typically, online obituaries are published within hours or days of submission, while print newspapers may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform where the obituary was published to inquire about their correction policy. Some may allow changes or corrections, while others may not.

Is it possible to publish an anonymous obituary?

In most cases, no. Obituaries typically require verification of the person's identity and death through official documents or confirmation from a funeral home or crematory.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you want to republish an old obituary, you'll need permission from the original publisher or copyright holder. Be sure to check their policies before sharing or re-posting the content.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or genealogy websites that specialize in historical records. Local libraries or archives may also have physical copies of old newspapers that can be searched manually.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Policies vary among online platforms, but many will archive obituaries indefinitely. Some may also offer options for removing or editing existing content upon request.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media can be a powerful tool for sharing news of a loved one's passing and connecting with others who knew them. Be sure to follow each platform's guidelines for posting sensitive content.

How do I respond to condolences expressed through an online obituary guestbook?

You can respond privately through email or messaging services provided by the online platform. Alternatively, you may choose to respond publicly through additional comments on the guestbook page.

What if I'm unsure about certain details in an obituary?

If you're unsure about specific facts or dates mentioned in an obituary, it's best to verify them with reliable sources such as official documents, family members, or close friends before sharing the information publicly.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

How do I deal with errors or inaccuracies in an already published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report any errors. They may issue corrections or updates depending on their policies.
