Obituary Preview: Harry E. Mehallick, 91 of Cincinnati, Ohio and formerly of Scottdale, passed away peacefully, late Monday evening, April 18, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Scottdale on August 1, 1930 the son of the late Michael and Mary Koval Mehallick, who died Feb. 08, 1986 and Aug.16, 1965, respectively.
Harry was a longtime member of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, where he served as an Usher and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society.
Harry was a Graduate of Scottdale High School Class of 1948. He then attended Clarion State Teachers College, where he graduated with a B.S. Degree 1952 and decided to further his education and attend the University of Pittsburgh where he then obtained his Master’s Degree in Education 1961.
He was employed at Scottland School for Veteran Children and Southmoreland School District where he taught for 39 years and retired 1992. Harry also taught at Penn State as a Part Time Instructor in Safety Education.
Harry was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army as a Corporal, where he served from 1953 – 1954 in the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal.
He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3368, Mt. Pleasant, Pa., Knights of Columbus Father Lambing Council holding rank of Third Degree, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and was a member of the Timberview Townhouse Owners Association for the past 15 years as an Officer. Committal Services and Interment will follow in the Parish Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Clyde A. Higbee, 74 of Scottdale, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning, April 13, 2022 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg, while being comforted by his family.
He was born May 18, 1947 in Brownsville, the son of the late Clyde Martin and Virginia Fern Higbee.
Clyde was a graduate of Southmoreland High School. He was a former employee of U.S. Steel Clairton Works with 35 years of service as a Foreman on B Battery.
He was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam for 3 years with HQ Co 3rd Battalion,  Fourth AIT BDE USATC while attaining the Rank of E-5. He was awarded the Viet-Nam Service Medal with 3 Bars and the Good Conduct Medal. Clyde was proud to have his name inscribed on the Memorial Plaque at the Scottdale Veterans Memorial.
Clyde always cared for others in a variety of ways. He also donated to the Disabled American Vets and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. She was born May 21, 1958 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of the late William and Eleanor McGinely Rhodes, who died Sept 28, 2020 and September 22, 1995 respectively.
Pam attended Southmoreland High School. She was a former Aide at Harmon House, Mt. Pleasant and  then became a Legal Secretary for 13 years in Greensburg.
Pam was a loving and caring Mother to her children and devoted Sister, Sister-in-law, Aunt and a Friend to many. She was a devoted wife to her late Husband, Dennis who died, January 23, 2021. Those left to Honor Pam’s life include: Her loving Son, Dean W. Previously, he was employed as a Coal Miner with Consol Energy with 7 years of service and most recently with Mt. Pleasant Removal Service as a tech for over a year.
Steve was a loving Son, Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle and a Friend to all who knew him. Joseph V. Eckman - September 16, 1927 - March 27, 2022

Obituary Preview: Joseph V. Eckman, 94 of Scottdale and formerly of Everson, where he formerly served as Mayor and  was a longtime community servant, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, Sunday morning, March 27, 2022 in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant.
Joe was born on September 16, 1927, a Son of the late Joseph and Dora Cramer Eckman and was raised in Everson, Pennsylvania. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II.   While in the Navy, Joe attended The Air Technical Training Center and earned his education for Aviation Metal Machinist while stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He flew reconnaissance missions over Adec, Dutch Harbor, Attu and Kodiak Islands. He was awarded The American Theater Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and The Victory Medal.
Upon returning home from the Navy, Joe enrolled in barber school, and for a short time worked alongside his brother Ed in Eckman's Barber Shop, Everson. Also, he continued his career at Robertshaw Controls where he retired as a key inspector after 48 years.
Community was important in Joe's life, and he served his community for nearly his entire life. His service began with scouting. He joined the Boy Scouts at age 11 where he obtained the rank of Star Scout. He was a patrol leader and a senior patrol leader until leaving for the Navy.  He returned to scouting and became the Scout Leader of Everson Troop 160 and was also a member of The Order of the Arrow. He oversaw the founding of the first Cub Scout pack in Everson. He enjoyed taking the troop to Camp Conestoga along with bus trips to Forbes Field and Gettysburg.
Joe served as president of Everson's Borough Council before being elected as Mayor. He remained the Mayor for 16 years. As Mayor he helped reorganize The Everson Civic Association and the Senior Citizens group. He received grants for community projects and was proud to obtain funds to maintain the Everson Christmas lights many years ago. He was also instrumental with the Honor Roll and Veterans Memorial.
At a young age he was elected to the school board for The Scottdale School District. During this time, Scottdale and East Huntingdon formed the jointure which is presently Southmoreland School District. In 1989, he returned to the school board and remained there for 20 years. He also served on the boards for Westmoreland Intermediate Unit, Southwest Regional Tax Bureau, and Fayette County SPCA.
Joe was a member of the Masonic Lodge #562, Free and Accepted Masons. He was awarded The Scouters Key and The Daniel Carter Beard Award, national scouting awards.  He was a lifetime member of The Everson VFW Hamilton-Maloy Post 595 and the Scottdale American Legion.  He remained active with both the Everson and Connellsville Senior's groups. He served as president and tour director for both groups. He planned many bus trips to the casinos. Some referred to these trips as Joe's Brigade.
Joe received many awards throughout the years. Most recently he was inducted into the PA Voter Hall of fame for having voted at every November election for the last 50 years which demonstrated his commitment to democracy.
In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased in 1990 by his wife of 40 years, Sarah Louise Eckman (Hendricks), brother Edward Eckman and sister Louise Livingood.
Joe will forever remain in the hearts of his children: Joseph Eckman (Jane) of Port Orange FL, Janis Pajak of Scottdale, and Bonnie Avolio (David) of Myrtle Beach SC. He was most proud of his grandchildren: Jason and Justin Eckman, Matthew Halfhill, Jeffrey Bedont, Joshua Pajak, and Meggie Shoemaker (Pajak). Joe had 9 great grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing. Joe’s arrangements have been entrusted to the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683.
Inurnment will take place in the Scottdale Cemetery, next to his wife Sarah, with full Military Honors to be accorded at the gravesite by the Scottdale Everson Honor Guard at a later date, to be announced. Joe took great pride in serving God, his country, and his community. His life can be celebrated by donating to The Everson Boy Scout Troop 160 or The Connellsville Senior Center. Bryan was a graduate of Yough High School Class of 1989. He then furthered his education at Washington and Jefferson College and graduated in 1995 with a degree in Business Economics.
Bryan was an avid Hunter and Fisherman who loved to attend Gun Bashes as well as collecting guns. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching the History and Discovery channels on TV. He was born July 28,1972 in Mt. Pleasant. He is the son of James Kenneth Hyde of Alverton and the late Mary Jane Grimm Hyde, who died December 28, 2020.
Brian was a Graduate of Southmoreland High School class of 1990. He then Graduated from Thiel College, with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing. He was employed by The Department of Corrections as a Correctional Health Care Administrator for over 25 years.
In addition to his career at SCI Somerset, he was associated with multiple athletic organizations. He was the former President of the Southmoreland Football Parents Association, Former head baseball coach of Southmoreland, and the Former President of the Bullskin Township Little league. He most recently was the Throws Coach for Somerset High School, Track & Field program.
Brian dedicated his coaching efforts to his three sons which produced multiple State & Regional Championships.
Brian was an amazing Husband, Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend.
He enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren, whom he loved more than anything. Those left to honor his life include: His three loving boys: David M. She was born May 29, 1950 in Mt. Pleasant the daughter of the late Orton O. and Margaret H. Leasure Stoner.
Emma attended Word of Life Church, Greensburg.
She was a Graduate of Southmoreland High School Class of 1970. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, crafts and taking pictures. Her Grandchildren were her life, she was Proud to be called “Nan”.
Emma loved Alan Jackson, she was a collector of his memorabilia, CDs, and so much more. She was honored to attend a concert with front row seats and her very own personal Meet and Greet with Alan Jackson himself.

Margie was a longtime and faithful member of Mt. Olive Evangelical Church of North America, Connellsville.
She was a retired employee of the former Williams House National Envelope with 19 years of service as a machine operator.
She loved flower gardening at her home and vacations to the beach with family bus trips with her daughter Joyce to the casino. She often took trips to Oregon to visit her family.

Obituary Preview: Thomas “Tom” Joseph Soforic, 53, of Pittsburgh, originally from Scottdale, passed away Saturday afternoon, February 26, 2022, in UPMC Passavant Hospital, McCandless Twp., surrounded by his loved ones after losing his battle with Covid- Pneumonia.
He was born in Mt. Pleasant, May 1, 1968, a son of the late Thomas and Emily Lesniowski Soforic.
Tom was a graduate of Geibel Catholic High School, Connellsville, Class of 1986, and a University of Pittsburgh alumnus. After finishing school, he worked in the IT industry for many years which he enjoyed. He then pursued his lifelong passion for building and creating by establishing his own remodeling business. Tom had a fascination with planes and flying and had his pilot’s license in his younger years. He also enjoyed traveling, sailing, gatherings with family and friends, and was a proud “Parrothead.” Tom will be treasured forever for his heart of gold, quick wit, wealth of knowledge, and big personality. He was someone who always put others’ needs before his own. His smile and laughter, which made the world a better place, will truly be missed. He is survived by his siblings Vanessa Soforic Johnston and late husband Mark Johnston of Scottdale, Roger and his wife Renae Soforic of Connellsville, Keith Soforic of Tampa, Florida His wonderful nieces and nephews
Taylor, Nichole, Justin, and Derek Soforic, and Cameron and Caileigh Johnston, all of whom held a special place in his heart and was a major part of his life.
He will be missed by his good friend Anita Domalik and several loving pets.

Obituary Preview: Patricia “Patty” M. Moore, 82, of Connellsville (Formerly of Alverton, PA), went home to be with the Lord, Monday Evening, February 21, 2022 in Eicher’s Family Home, Normalville.
Patty was born March 26, 1939 in Connellsville, the daughter of the late Arthur and Gladys Lilly Metcalf.
Patty resided in Alverton, PA where she raised four daughters, worked at Connellsville Sportswear as a seamstress and was a member of Mt. Zion Community Church. She loved camping, boating, gardening, watching movies and cooking shows. She was a loving Mother who was devoted to be a witness for God to her family and friends.
Patty enjoyed nearly 20 years in Florida alongside her late husband Robert, they helped the missionaries at New Tribes Mission. They moved to DeBary, Florida and became members of Grace Baptist Church. Together they spread the news of Christ through a Tract Ministry. She also enjoyed helping at a local nursing home. Alone she attended Volusia County Baptist where she played the trumpet in the orchestra. She later moved to Salt Springs, Florida where spent her time enjoying friends and teaching Sunday school at the First Baptist Church. In 2011 Patty moved back to Pennsylvania to spend time with her family. She joined the Scottdale Concert Band and enjoyed watching her grandchildren play instruments in High School. John attended Jacobs Creek United Methodist Church. He was an avid Hunter and Fisherman. He enjoyed a variety of Crafts, John also loved to make his own Wine.
John proudly served his Country from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class.
John was a loving Husband, Father, and Brother to his family and a friend to many.
John may be gone from our lives but will remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

Gene was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a Trustee of the Church Council and enjoyed being a member of the Men’s group who held Spaghetti Dinners to raise funds for the youth to go to Summer Camp. His Church and Church Family were an important part of his life.
Gene was the Owner and Operator of Gene Brilhart Heating and Air Conditioning, Sales and Service for many years in the local area.
Gene was a loving Husband, Father and Brother to his family and a friend to many. Gene was also an honorable and kind man who was loved in return. Gene is gone from our lives but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him,

She was born May 13, 1983 in Greensburg, PA., the beloved daughter of  Kenneth and Kathleen Zaffina Harrold of Latrobe, PA , the dear wife of Garrett Hamilton of Hilton Head Island, SC. She was the loving mother to her two boys, Graeme and Grady.
Ashley was a graduate of Greensburg Salem High School Class of 2001 and Seton Hill University in 2005.
She was a Four Year Captain of Seton Hill University Women’s Tennis team as well as the YMCA Westmoreland County Sportswoman College Tennis Team Member in 2005. She was amongst those named 1st Team All Mid-East Conference Tennis Singles Selection, 2002 – 2005.
Ashley was employed in high school at the Greensburg Racquet Club, Greensburg, PA and in college as a PTR Tennis Professional at Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis University, Hilton Head Island, SC.
She worked as a Marketing Coordinator at Powerscore, Golfer’s Guide and recently at Charter One Realty as a Sales Assistant all of Hilton Head Island, SC.
She was a former Board member of The Island Council for the Arts, Hilton Head Island, SC.
Ashley was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, cousin and friend to all who knew her. Ashley is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She was a graduate of Connellsville High School. She was formerly employed with the Pentagon for a number of years, processing DD214 for all Service Personnel.
Lorraine retired as a Proof Reader for the Scottdale Independent – Observer newspaper, with over 20 years’ service.
She was a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Friend, neighbor and valued Mentor to many. She loved her family dearly and above all she praised and loved her Lord.

He served in the United States Army from 1963-1966, with the Third US Army, HHC 3rd Brigade 101st Air Borne Division, during the Viet-Nam war. Jerry was the recipient of the Expert Badge (M-14 & M-16) National Defense Service Medal and the Aircraft Crewman Badge.
He was also a life member of Scottdale V.F.W. Post. He especially enjoyed spending quality time with his granddaughter, Emma “Pappy’s Girl”. Jerry was also an avid fisherman.
Jerry was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother, to his family and a friend to many.
Gerald is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

He was born December 23, 1973 in Kapiolani Hawaii, the son of Sharon June Hendricks Chun of Nemacolin, Pa and the late Earl AhFong Chun.
Earl attended Grace Fellowship Church, Everson.
Earl was a graduate of Carmichaels High School class of 1992. He attended Waynesburg University from 1994 – 1995, then enrolled at California University of Pa. He was a successful athlete throughout his High School and College years, where he played football and was on the Wrestling Teams for Carmichaels High School.
Earl enjoyed being at home teaching his sons in their younger years. He enjoyed snorkeling, Drawing, and Painting. One of his exclusive drawings was accepted in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. He also was an avid Comic Book collector.
Earl was a loving Husband, Father, Brother, Son-in-Law, Brother-in-Law to his family and a friend to many. Earl May be gone from our lives but will remain in the hearts of those who loved him. In addition to his Mother, Sharon June Hendricks Chun of Nemacolin, Pa. he is survived by:

He was born September 17, 1943 in Scottdale the son of the late Ernest and Dorothy Christiansen Weisel.
He was a Graduate of East Huntingdon High School Class of 1961. He was a retired engineer for Kennametal Inc. of Latrobe, with 45 years of service. He taught Geometric Tolerancing Dimensioning and training at Eastern and Central Westmoreland Vo-Tech for a number of years. He also was an avid fisherman.
Thomas was a devoted member of Emmanuel Bible Church of Norvelt.
Thomas was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother to his family and a Friend to many. Thomas is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him,

Obituary Preview: Michael Trice Sr, 61 of Smithton, died Saturday morning,  January 22, 2022, in the comfort of his home, in the presence of family.
Michael died a loved and important man. He was a man of unshakable conviction and devoted his life in Christ. One of his favorite Bible passages was, Psalms 18:2 "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer, my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Mike was a man you wanted to model your life around, a man of integrity and love. He dedicated his life serving others by graduating from Fayette Vo-tech as a Licensed Practical Nurse, working at McKeesport Hospital for 11 years. He and his wife Tammy owned and operated a restaurant, the former Trice’s Slovak Restaurant, in Mt. Pleasant, for a number of years.
He loved children and served as a foster parent for Westmoreland County Children's Bureau and Families United, fostering numerous children and adopting several children. In addition to his parents, Wayne and Dolores (Vought) Trice, he was predeceased by his Son John Allen Trice, and Son In-law Deane W. Truszka. He is survived by his wife Tammy Trice of 40 years, children Michael Trice Jr (Rachal) of Smithton; Dempster Trice (Crystal) of Smithton; Cortland (Kelly "Opie") of Smithton; Priscilla ( belated Deane) Truszka of Scottdale; Ricky Trice of Smithton; Amberleen Wanda (fiancé Brandon Anthony) of Smithton; Terria Trice of West Virginia; Samantha Trice ( Boyfriend Colton Gourley) of New Stanton; Edward Trice, Orie Trice, Austin Trice and Nicholas Trice, all of Smithton; and 21 Grandchildren. Father In-law Arthur Kolar of Regantown; Mother In-law Pauline and Steve Toth of Smithton. His loving memory will be survived by all, due to his works in Christ our Lord.

Obituary Preview: Timothy P. “Tim” Shoemaker, 67 of Scottdale and former Mayor of the Borough of Everson, passed away Monday afternoon, in the caring presence of his loving family, January 17, 2022 at Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant.
He was born March 17, 1954 in Vandergrift, the son of the late Elmer Evans and M. Ethel Booher Shoemaker.
Tim loved his Church and was a devoted member of Grace Fellowship Church, Everson where he was a Lay Minister and held many positions including President of Church Council, Pastor of Parish Committee, Choir member, Sunday School Teacher, Children Church Committee and was in charge of numerous Bible Studies.
He was the Former Councilman and Mayor of Everson Borough for 20 years, from 1990 to 2010 and Vice President of Everson Civic Organization whose members volunteered to install the beautiful Christmas lights each year which Tim thoroughly enjoyed so much that even when he became a Scottdale resident, he still volunteered his time putting up the lights and doing other projects for the community of Everson. Tim moved to Scottdale but his heart remained in Everson. Mayor Shoemaker was a member of the Fay-West Golf League and also managed the GSGSL for many years, the Men’s Church Dart ball League and was a member of Pennsylvania State Mayors Association.
Tim was an avid Runner and diehard Pitt Fan who bled Blue and Gold. Tim was a graduate of Kiski Area High School Class of 1972 and a graduate of WCCC. He retired as a Material Analyst for West Penn Power with 45 years of service.
Tim not only loved the Christmas Season, but the true meaning of Christmas. He loved to play Santa for families throughout the communities and of course decorating his home inside and out with the main purpose of preparing for the Birth of Christ.  He also decorated his home each Veterans and Memorial Day to show his respect to all Veterans.
Tim had the largest smile for everyone who he knew and met.  He was an honorable and kind man who loved his Family and was greatly loved in return.
Tim is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
