Marian Buchakjian - September 28, 1930 - August 26, 2020

Departed: 08/26/2020 (Broomall)
Obituary Preview: Marian Buchakjian (nee Welch) of Willistown, formerly of Havertown, passed away peacefully on August 26th at the age of 89.She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 71 years,Edward Buchakjian, and her three children, Edward (Lorraine), John (Bobbie) and Barbara Moore (Michael). Marian was adored by her grandchildren Jennifer (TJ), Edwin (Danielle), Christian (Mary Beth), Jeffrey (Tara), Kevin, Melissa, Joseph, Jake and 9 great-grandchildren.
Born in Troy, NY to Lucy and Edward Welch, the family moved in 1938 to Philadelphia. Marian graduated from Bartram High School in 1948. Her first job was with Bell Telephone before automation - she was a “number, please” girl.
During the age of one television per household, Marian was somehow able to keep the peace between the kids on Sunday afternoons when the football games and Shirley Temple Theatre aired at the same time. She was such an avid Philly sports fan that on one occasion she even picked up the whole family and checked into a hotel, just to watch an Eagles game that was blacked out at home.
She did not return to the workforce until after her children were grown and grandchildren had arrived. She worked for Edgewood Cleaners, was employed at Genuardi’s Family Market as a cashier trainer and was a teacher’s aide at Exton Elementary School working one-on-one with autistic children. Her special needs children experienced the same care and compassion as did her family. She was so well-loved at Exton Elementary that the whole staff, including the principal, would call her “Grandmama.” After 8 years she retired.
This memorial would not be complete without mentioning Marian’s incredible intellect, sense of humor and quick wit. One may describe it as “sharp” or sarcastic, at times self-deprecating, but always done in humor which was the intention.
She was blessed with her devoted and adoring Ed. They were inseparable and their love is one for the ages. She was loyal and protective of all she loved and as such, was much loved in return.
Marian worshiped and gave much of her time to her beloved Armenian Martyrs’ Congregational Church where she held many offices serving the Lord. With the love of her family and friends, her strong Christian faith provided her with comfort and peace during her final days.

Francis "Frank" E. Johnston - October 09, 1931 - August 20, 2020

Departed: 08/20/2020 (Broomall)
Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Francis E. Johnston on August 20, 2020, due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Johnston, or Frank as he was known, was a Professor Emeritus of biological anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and held many senior positions in anthropological and professional organizations over the course of his career. He was living in Springfield, PA, at the time of his passing.
Frank Johnston was born in Paris, KY, in 1931, to Francis C. Johnston and Hattie C. Phillips. He attended Paris High School and, after graduating, began studies at the University of Kentucky. Before finishing, he left college and enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1953. He became a Naval Aviator, and ultimately a flight instructor, earning a National Defense Service Ribbon. He was honorably discharged from the Corps in 1958 with the rank of First Lieutenant.
While he was at the university, Johnston took a class from Charles Snow, a biological anthropologist. Meeting Snow inspired Johnston to pursue anthropology. After leaving the Marine Corps he returned to the University of Kentucky, completing his BA and then his MSc degree, studying the Archaic period Native American burials from the site of Indian Knoll, KY. Building on this, Johnston’s interests turned to the use of skeletal analysis to study growth and development in living people, and he entered the Anthropology Department at the University of Pennsylvania to work with Wilton Krogman. He received his PhD in 1962 after completing a study of the ways in which skeletal analysis could be used to measure and assess the growth, and therefore the health, of children in Philadelphia.
After completing his PhD he joined Penn as an Assistant Professor of Anthropology, receiving tenure and remaining there until 1968. During this time, he was also a postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Child Health, University of London (1966-67) and the Institute of Cancer Research, Philadelphia (1967-68). In 1968 he became an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, and in 1971 he moved to Temple University, where he was a Professor of Anthropology until 1973. After this he returned to the Anthropology Department at the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained for the rest of professional life, becoming an Emeritus Professor in 2000 and retiring from teaching in 2016.
Johnston’s research focused on the growth and development of children, particularly how culture affected their nutritional status and so their health. He did research in many places throughout Latin America, especially Guatemala (since 1966) but also in Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and Cuba. He was also involved in the study of the health effects of modernization in Papua New Guinea. In 1990, Johnston began an academically-based community service initiative in West Philadelphia. His teaching also incorporated service learning, particularly with the Netter Center for Community Partnerships at Penn, where he served as a co-chair of its Faculty Advisory Board for 20 years, and through the Urban Nutrition Initiative, which he founded and directed. He was also a member of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School Council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and the Council’s Special Task Force on improving the health status of the West Philadelphia community.
Throughout his career, Johnston held many positions and received many honors. He served as department Chair of Anthropology at Penn from 1982-1994. He was an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, University of Cambridge (1994-95 and 2000) and was a Visiting Fellow of the Department of Anthropology, University College, London, (1988-89) and Visiting Professor of Human Biology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (1989). Johnston was a past-President of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists (1983-85) and was Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (1977-83), Human Biology (1987-88), and the American Journal of Human Biology (1988-90). He served as Consultant to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, and the Pan American Health Organization.
Among many honors, in 1982 he received the award of the American Society of Scientific Publishers for editing the best issue of a scientific journal published that year in the USA. In 1986 he received the award as author of the best article appearing that year in the Journal of Adolescent Medicine. In 1998 he received Honorable Mention for the Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service, given by the New England Resource Center for Higher Education. In April, 2003, Johnston received the Charles Darwin Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. In 2002, Barbara and G. Frederick Roll established a permanent academic chair of anthropology in Johnston’s honor, the Francis E. Johnston Term Professor of Anthropology.
Johnston wrote fifteen books and over 160 articles. His last book, Knowledge for Social Change (written with a number of co-authors) was published in 2017. Using history, social theory, and case studies, the book argues that we should fundamentally rethink research universities, using the knowledge they produce to enact social change and help create and sustain democratically-engaged colleges and universities for the public good.
During his career, Johnston supervised many students, including undergraduates, Masters’ students and over twenty PhD students. He was known for having a breadth of academic knowledge, but also for understanding that academics need to get out of the university and do practical work in the community. Towards this end, in 1991, Johnston founded and directed the Netter Center’s Agatston Urban Nutrition Initiative, which develops programs in nutrition and health education. This included establishing fruit stands and school gardens in 16 Philadelphia schools, serving more than 6,000 students as well as hundreds of adults at a variety of West Philadelphia community and senior centers. He encouraged students to see the practical side of knowledge, and to use that knowledge to make the world a better place. His students remember him as funny, kind, and decent, always willing to help and encouraging them to explore new ways of thinking about the world. He was known to say that “service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth”, a quote attributed to different people in slightly different ways but summarizing how he felt about the importance of giving back to the community.
Johnston loved opera and jazz, good wine, travel, and good conversation. He was a lifetime member of his church, and served as elder, organist, and choir director for 50 years. He was a mentor, a husband, a friend, a father, a colleague, and we will miss him very, very much. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Johnston, whom he married in 1955, and by three children and three grandchildren. The family requests that memorial donations be made in Frank's Memory to the Alzheimer s Assoc., 399 Market St, Suite 102, Phila, PA 19106
Due to the COVID pandemic, a private funeral service for his immediate family is being held.

Betty T Germano - June 01, 1922 - August 08, 2020

Departed: 08/08/2020 (Broomall)
Obituary Preview: Betty Tosi Germano, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away at home on August 8, 2020. Still young at the age of 98, she was surrounded by her sister and three children.
Mrs. Germano was born in Philadelphia in 1922, the first of three children of Rocco and Concetta Tosi. She graduated from South Philadelphia High School in 1940, where she developed an enduring passion for literature and the theater. She acted in school plays and excelled in creative writing.
Within weeks of Pearl Harbor, Betty, just 19 at the time, was eager to join the war effort. She took a civil service test and was quickly hired by the US Navy in January 1942, as the assistant to the administrator of the Naval Ammunition Depot at Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia. Her work for the Navy was very sensitive. It required a high security clearance and came with tremendous responsibility for a kid barely out of high school. Sometimes she worked Sunday through Saturday for a month to six weeks without a day off. In addition to feeling proud of her efforts on behalf of her country during the war, Betty established many lifelong friendships at Fort Mifflin. She resigned in November 1944, a month after her marriage to Army Staff Sargent James ("Jim") A. Germano, who had recently returned from overseas, to join him at his new post at Camp Roberts in Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple returned to Philadelphia upon Jim's discharge in late 1945. When their children were old enough, Betty began what would become a career of thirty years in retail at Strawbridge and Clothier. And she took her wedding vows seriously. She left Strawbridge's in January 1994 to care full-time, until his death in July 2002, for her husband, a stroke victim.
Betty was a talented artist who enjoyed painting. In middle age, she enrolled in evening art classes with her daughter Linda and her best friend, Mary Reagan.. One of her teachers entered a painting in a tri-state competition., It won first prize.
Betty's love of the theater, ballet, big-band music, and Broadway musicals led her to attend concerts and Broadway shows and to listen nearly every day to music on the family's stereo. She was a voracious reader of novels, biographies, history, and memoirs. Until the end, she curled up with a book every night and read the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books, and the Sunday New York Times from cover to cover. Betty loved good movies throughout her life and went to the cinema frequently.
Betty is survived by her children: Diane Germano of Waterville, MA, Linda and son-in-law Lee Urwiler of Swarthmore, PA, and Mark Germano of Drexel Hill, PA. Other survivors include grandchildren Eric and Amanda Staples, sister Gloria and brother-in-law Joseph Cara, sister-in-law (and lifelong friend) Anne Barilotti, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service and burial will be private.

Departed: 08/08/2020 (Broomall)
Obituary Preview: Capt. Glenn Smith, USN, Ret., 70, died unexpectedly but peacefully in his sleep at the family cottage at Oteyokwa Lake in Pennsylvania. Glenn was born to Marcus and Martha Smith on February 1, 1950 in Morristown, NJ. He graduated as Valedictorian of Ilion High School, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from RPI in 1973. He joined the Navy Civil Engineer Corps as an Ensign in 1973 and retired as a Captain, after 24 years, in 1997. During that time, he earned several medals, was the Executive Officer (XO) of NMCB 40, and earned a Master’s of National Strategy from the National War College in 1995. Glenn then became the Director of Facilities at Bryn Mawr College for 19 years, retiring in 2018.
He was an active member of APPA (an organization supporting Leadership in Educational Facilities).
In the Navy, Glenn was a pioneer in Total Quality Leadership, and continued his role as Leadership trainer in APPA for the next 20 years. Throughout his years in the Navy, at Bryn Mawr, and as a part of APPA, he was known as a true leader who was kind and generous, often described as “an officer and a gentleman.” He was a lifelong student of leadership skills, mentoring men and women in every job assignment. He demonstrated his leadership skills as president of the local and international APPA organizations.
Glenn was a man of wide-ranging interests. His love of track and field grew from his time as a high hurdler in high school and college. He followed the sport closely throughout his life. For each transfer for Navy assignments, Glenn planned the cross country moves, arranging for his family to see as many aspects of America as he could fit into the trip. This love of travel continued throughout his life. A card-carrying Roller Coaster Enthusiast, he and his family rode roller coasters from coast to coast. A member of the Music Box Society, he and his wife Sue have a small collection of antique music makers. Their favorite, a player piano, will continue to provide hours of fun and entertainment for family and friends alike. For many years he played the baritone horn in the Marple Newtown Community Band. Aside from his faith and family, his biggest passion was cycling. He was a member of the Media Cycling Club and was a strong, competitive rider admired by all. Glenn enjoyed working with wood, making, amongst other things, a beautiful cherry dining table, and his final project with Sue, a wooden kayak named “Grace.” He was a faithful member of Springton Lake Presbyterian Church.
Most important to Glenn was his family. He was a deeply loving and playful husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his parents, Marcus (97) and Martha (98) Smith, who survive him, as does his mother-in-law Ann Patterson (96). His wife of 48 years, Susan Patterson Smith, and his four children, Michael (Justine) Smith, Kathryn (Justin) Meeks, Tina (Jason) Horn, and Peter (Niff) Smith, will dearly miss him. His eight grandchildren - Noah, Riley and Madeline Horn; Elsa, Liliana, Larsen, and Juniper Meeks; and Alden Smith - will miss his laughter and love. He is also survived by his three sisters, Marcia (Doug) McCoy, Gail Krueger, and Maureen (Craig) Cashman and many nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial will be held September 12 at Springton Lake Presbyterian Church, led by Pastor Rick Marshall.

Lynn H. Creighton - July 10, 1929 - August 07, 2020

Departed: 08/07/2020 (Broomall)
Obituary Preview: Lynn H. Creighton, 91 of Broomall, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2020. He was born on July 10, 1929 in Juniata, PA, the second of 5 sons of William and Mary Creighton. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1947 and was accepted into a machinist apprenticeship with the Pennsylvania Railroad, in the Altoona locomotive shops. He later relocated to Philadelphia to continue working for the railroad at 30th Street Station, in the purchasing department. It was here that he met the lovely Marion Davis. They enjoyed taking the train to New York City to see shows on Broadway, watching the Philadelphia Phillies, and going to horse races. They were married in Media, PA, on November 27, 1963. On their way to Miami Beach, Florida for their honeymoon, they stopped at a horse racetrack, and made a sentimental bet on a longshot-horse named ‘Shotgun Wedding.’ The horse wound up winning the race and the payout was a great start to their honeymoon.
They were residents of Media, PA for 10 years, and it is where they had their three children; William, Mary, and Susan. In 1974 they moved to Broomall, PA where they lived out the rest of their lives. Lynn was a devout Christian, and was a member of Marple Presbyterian Church. He served as a trustee for many years with the church and enjoyed assisting in maintaining the church grounds.
Lynn retired in 1992, and became a grandfather full time. He and his wife enjoyed their retirement, taking cruises, seeing shows, and going out to dinner. They were happiest when their family was together, and often had family gatherings at their house.
Lynn loved the Lord and was a devoted husband, father, Pop-Pop, son, and brother. He was a sharp shooter with a .22 from his kitchen window when the squirrels were eating his tomatoes. He was the last person you’d ever meet who worked on steam locomotives. He never missed church on Sunday. He taught the importance of working hard, but not letting it consume your life. Saving money and spending it wisely. Being content with what you have and counting your blessings. He set the bar high for how a husband should treat his wife, and expressed everyday how much he valued his marriage. He will be greatly missed by his family.
He is preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Marion, and his brother, Vern Creighton. He is survived by his children, William (Eileen), Mary (Will), and Susan (Steve), and his nine grandchildren, Rebecca (Jeffrey), Rachel (Clinton), Daniel, Zachariah, Josiah, Grace, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, and Faith, and three brothers, Malcolm (late wife Nancy), James (Susie), and Gary (Jean), and sister-in-law Millie Creighton.
