Obituary Preview: Gerald “Jerry” Thomas Cushing passed away Friday April 26, 2024 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City, IN. Jerry was born on April 14, 1940 in Rock Island, IL to Margaret Pauline (Seaton) and Leo Edward Cushing. He graduated from Spaulding Institute in 1958. He moved from Peoria, IL to Chicago in 1958 and worked on the railroad for a few years. It was during this time that he met Arlos Marlene Selmer and they married on January 2, 1965.Jerry joined the Chicago Police Department in 1961 and was promoted to sergeant in 1971. He retired in 1995 after proudly serving for 34 years. After his retirement from the force, Jerry served the City of Chicago for another 10 years as a Police Supervisor at the 911 Center.Jerry never knew a stranger; he was a friend to everyone and loved to strike up a conversation. A devoted husband and father, he was a hard worker and did whatever he needed to provide for his family. He was truly a jack of all trades, working as a semi -truck driver, snowplow driver, fencing and gate fabricator, and owned two businesses: Cushing Carpet Cleaners and J&J Excavating. Jerry also worked for the Sheehy Funeral Home in Chicago, IL. Additionally, he happily farmed alongside his father-in-law and worked diligently with his family to remodel their beloved farmhouse. In his spare time, Jerry also coached both football and softball.Jerry was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in San Pierre, IN, and the Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago. He was born on January 31, 1928 in Arthur Mable, KY to the late Will and Dovie [Howard] Miller. Willie worked as a lumberjack in Kentucky before moving to Indiana in 1968 and going to work for the Monon Railroad (now CSX). He retired from the railroad after 23 years of service.Willie was a member of the United Baptist Church of Bailey's Comer. He was an animal lover and especially enjoyed raising horses and mules. He was born on March 14, 1946 at home on the family farm where he lived most of his life. Ralph graduated from Medaryville High School in 1964. He married his high school sweetheart, Martha Sue Howe, on October 31, 1964. Ralph owned and operated Risner Motor Sales in Medaryville for 40 years.Ralph was an active member of the Medaryville Christian Church, Medaryville Lions Club, and the Medaryville Potato Festival. After retirement, you could find Ralph working on his farm and helping others. Ralph enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He especially enjoyed working with his hunting dogs and tinkering on antique tractors. Ralph was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished time spent with his family. Obituary Preview: Sherrie L. [Nightingale] Hauptli, 58, of Medaryville, IN passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She was born on February 10, 1965 in East Chicago, IN. In 1983, Sherrie graduated from West Central High School in Francesville and attended Central Bible College in Springfield, MO. She worked most of her life in the medical field. Sherrie was a gifted musician who was well-known for playing the organ and piano at church. In 1984, she joined Melodyairs which began her singing career which spanned over 25 years with the conclusion of her performance in I Love Lucy. Sherrie taught piano for many years and accredited her love for music to Josephine Speicher. In addition to her musical talents, she was fluent in American Sign Language and was a talented cook and baker. She was an avid bowler; a pastime she shared with her father. She was a certified storm chaser and covered White County, IN. Sherrie loved spending time outdoors and especially enjoyed summers spent working at Indiana Beach.Sherrie served her Lord and Savior with all her heart. Her Medaryville Assembly of God church family was precious to her. Most of all, Sherrie was a loving and devoted daughter, mom, grandma, sister, and aunt. In addition to her musical talents, she was fluent in American Sign Language and was a talented cook and baker. She was an avid bowler; a pastime she shared with her father. She was a certified storm chaser and covered White County, IN. Sherrie loved spending time outdoors and especially enjoyed summers spent working at Indiana Beach.
Sherrie served her Lord and Savior with all her heart. Her Medaryville Assembly of God church family was precious to her. Most of all, Sherrie was a loving and devoted daughter, mom, grandma, sister, and aunt. She will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved her. Sherrie is survived by: Coltin D.
