Mary Ellen was born and raised in Botkins, Ohio on her family farm, affectionately named “Honey” by her father. Through the years, she continued her career in Cosmetology, while staying home to care for her family. Mary Ellen loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and most recently her twin great-grandchildren. All of them were the joy of her life. Her only son, Kevin, devoted many years to caring for her so she could remain in her home. She was so thankful for the care and love he showed her every day and keeping her company so she would not be alone. Mary Ellen loved traveling, dining out, gardening, puzzles, cooking, and painting. She looked forward to any time she could socialize and greeted everyone who crossed her path with the most infectious smile. She will always be remembered for her joy in living, her light-hearted personality and her sweet, child-like laughter that reflected her bright spirit and love for the people who surrounded her. As an avid nature lover, Ray spent many summers at the family cabin in Inlet, NY on Limekiln Lake. He would often wake with the sun and take the kayak, loaded up with a camera and his beloved cocker spaniel, Heidi, out on the lake for a morning paddle.
Aside from his love of the outdoors, Ray also enjoyed watching Nascar races and learning about computers. Truly a lifelong learner, he was always learning new things.
A handy man at heart, Ray worked for the Brockport central school district as the head of maintenance for 38 year. Between his childhood, growing up as one of 9 kids in rural New Hampshire and working on the neighbors farm, and his time working in maintenance, there was nothing Ray couldn't fix or learn to fix.
Ray was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served overseas in the Korean war. Upon returning to the states he met his wife Marilyn in California where they lived before returning to Marilyn's hometown of Brockport. After retiring, Ray and Marilyn moved to Port Orange, FL. where they lived for 17 years before returning to New York to be closer to family. He is survived by his loving wife of 19 years Linda, brother-in-law Michael Fay, nephews Brendan and Christopher Fay, niece Addison Fay, many loving cousins and dear friends.
Rick had many lifelong interests. To say he was an avid pilot, scuba diver or guitarist would be an understatement. He was always a master of his craft. A “regular renaissance man”, as he would say. Matthew El Altenritter - May 29, 1986 - March 16, 2024

Departed: 03/16/2024 (Brockport)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Matthew (Matt) Altenritter, aged 37, passed away on Saturday afternoon, 3/16/2024 surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with stomach cancer. A cherished husband to Megan and devoted father to George and Mary-Claire, Matt’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and passion. Born 5/29/1986 in South Korea and adopted by Sandra and Edward Altenritter, he embraced life with a zest that was contagious to all who knew him.
Matt’s passion for the natural world was not just a pastime, but the essence of his being. He found fishing and the water to be his tranquil sanctuary, a place where he found solace and joy. He shared this love of water and the outdoors with his soulmate, Megan, and together they spent as much time as possible enjoying and exploring nature as a family, no matter the season or location.
As a scholar, Matt’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable, culminating in a BS and MS in biology from Grand Valley State University in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and a PhD in biological sciences from University of Maine in 2015. As a respected professor at SUNY Brockport, he inspired students with his enthusiasm for fish, ecology, and the environment. His teachings extended beyond the classroom, instilling a sense of wonder and respect for the natural world in all who had the privilege to learn from him.
His battle with stomach cancer was fought with the same resilience he approached all of life’s challenges. Despite many moves and the challenges that came along with a competitive academic career, Matt was always forward-thinking and was always working to improve himself. Throughout it all, he prioritized his family first and was the most dedicated and loving husband and father. He kept his faith extremely quiet and close to his heart, rarely even letting his closest family know where he was spiritually. In his final months and days, he took solace in knowing that a place of rest, comfort, and peace awaited him.
Matt’s work ethic was unparalleled, but it was his kindness and caring nature that truly set him apart. He approached life with a gentle thoughtfulness, touching the lives of those around him in subtle yet memorable ways. He was a “favorite” in every aspect of his life- a sentiment echoed by friends, family, and colleagues alike. In his memory, let us cast our lines into the waters of life, seeking the peace he found and the joy he shared.
Matt is predeceased by his mother, Sandra Altenritter.
