Harold Bowling - March 24, 1947 - December 18, 2023

Departed: 12/18/2023 (Oneida)
Obituary Preview: Mr. Harold Bowling, age 76, departed this life on Monday, December 18, 2023, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Scott County on March 24, 1947, to the late Rev. Virgil Bowling and Lillie Harness-Bowling. Harold always sincerely acknowledged all his distinguished, work-related accomplishments with the utmost in humility and a thankful heart. He was the co-founder of a prominent, Scott County-based business, Bowling Excavating and Lumber Company, with his late brother, Lawrence Bowling, with whom he had a remarkably close working relationship for well over sixty years. Both Harold and Lawrence had an innate talent for operating heavy equipment and always took great pleasure in working in this capacity with Harold’s son, Brent, who was equally adamant about their chosen profession and often collaborated with them on various construction and wood processing projects. Harold and Lawrence’s self-employment work history together spanned nearly four decades during which they avidly worked for a great multitude of valued excavating and lumber customers in Scott and surrounding counties in East Tennessee.
In the 1970s, Harold and Lawrence worked in tandem efficiently harvesting big timber for Hiwassee Timber Company. Incidentally, Harold was entrusted with the extremely dangerous tasks of felling trees and transporting them, as he was a highly skilled timber cutter and truck driver.
He and Lawrence were also employed by Elgin Wood Company in Elgin, Tennessee and had the privilege and honor of working with some famous colleagues, namely U.S. Army Sergeant Walter Lowe, a renowned World War II veteran, who once resided in the West Robbins community of South Scott County, and Kyle “Buddy” Cruze, a notable University of Tennessee football standout and Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame member.
From the mid-1970s to the late 1980s, Harold primarily specialized in strip-mining operations in neighboring Fentress County, Tennessee, although he and Lawrence had also completed other strip-mining projects through their employment with another renowned, Scott County-based company, Burress Brothers Mining. Harold always thoroughly enjoyed talking about his experiences with operating some of the world’s largest mining equipment of this era, specifically the Komatsu D455A dozer. The dozer, in addition to certain Caterpillar wheel-tractor scraper pans and dump trucks, was his expertise and, by far, one of his most favorite machines to operate in all the arduous work environments he visited with it. He was a first-rate, heavy equipment service technician as well.
In the years prior to his inevitable business endeavors, Harold was instrumental in the completion of two, major, highway construction projects in Scott County, specifically a considerable portion of Highway 63 and the Leatherwood Road project along state route 297 in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.
In May 1983, Harold and his brother, Lawrence, purchased their first backhoe, a 1974 Massey Ferguson 40 Series from Oneida businessman Lillard Miller and thus began their business journey together pursuing part-time, self-employment while still concurrently focusing on strip-mining operations until making the life-altering business decision to wholeheartedly manage a full-time, excavating business in 1989, immediately following the official closure of their final strip-mining project in Fentress County with Elkhorn Mining.
In 1995, he and Lawrence formally instituted their own lumber business with the purchase of a 1993 Wood Mizer LT30HD Portable Sawmill that has produced a colossal volume of lumber over the years.
Harold’s hobbies included simply enjoying the benefits of experiencing the great outdoors through his active involvement in several farming and landscaping ventures on his estate as well as attending to home-improvement projects and the restoration of classic cars.
He had professed his faith in Almighty God, as a young child, and reaffirmed it in October 2018 after having received his first cancer diagnosis.
As an ardently devoted family man, he tirelessly took exceptionally good care of his entire family and thought the world of his precious granddaughter, RaeLee Elaina (also affectionately known as “Papaw Bowling’s Little Isabella Lou”).
In essence, Harold was an incredibly ambitious, successful, and virtuous man, who dearly loved His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and all members of his beloved family with every fiber of his being. He consistently exuded sheer benevolence and was always concerned for everyone’s welfare, having steadfastly given of his time, energy, and resources on a regular basis for the betterment of everyone, who was fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his precious grandson: Ethan Paul Strunk; sisters: Viola Foley, Gladis Owens, Lola Mae Brown, and Hazel Cross; brothers: Lester Bowling and Lawrence Bowling; father-in-law: Rev. Ernest Alonzo Hamby; and mother-in-law: Gladys Sue Smith-Hamby.
He is survived by his dedicated, loving wife of over fifty years: Brenda Lou Hamby-Bowling; children: Brent Aaron Bowling of Robbins, Tennessee and Brittany Mattea Bowling-Strunk and husband Paul of Strunk, Kentucky; precious granddaughter: RaeLee Elaina Strunk; sisters: Elsie DeNoyer of Belleville, Michigan and Edna Cross of Robbins, Tennessee; brother: Sylvester Bowling of Winfield, Tennessee; sisters-in-law: Loretta Sue Wilson-Bowling of Robbins, Tennessee, Linda Hamby-Griego and husband Alex of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Seprena Hamby-Daugherty and husband Tony of Oneida, Tennessee; and brothers-in-law: Allen Hamby and wife Donna and Steve Hamby and wife Mary all of Huntsville, Tennessee. Mr. Bowling also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and many other special relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Four Oaks Funeral Home in Oneida. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 22, 2023, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Four Oaks Funeral Home in Oneida with Bro. Brent Bowling, Bro. Darrell Webb, and Rev.
