Donald Gary Fadden - June 12, 1966 - March 17, 2024

Departed: 03/17/2024 (Saranac Lake)
Obituary Preview: Donald Gary “Tehonatake” Fadden, Wolf Clan, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday March 16, 2024. Don was born on June 12, 1966 in Saranac Lake, NY and was raised in
Onchiota, NY.
Don attended Bloomingdale elementary and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1984. He received his Associates Degree from North Country Community College and worked for various places in the Saranac Lake region including Currier Press and for the Saranac Lake School District. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Don” at the Lake Colby Elementary School by the students and staff. He went above and beyond his duties as a custodian at Lake
Colby School to make the lives of the children and staff easier. Don married Kathy Green in 1992 and settled in Onchiota where they raised two boys, Ian
and Evan. The marriage ended in separation. Don had many interests and hobbies. His love of cars began in childhood and took him to many races From Frogtown, Akwesasne to drag racing in Gainsville, Florida. He loved to tinker with cars, motorcycles and anything with wheels. During his teenage years, he and his high school friends could often times be seen working on an old Plymouth Duster or an AMC Gremlin. Aside from cars and wheels, he was a skilled artist with pen and ink and in his later years, acrylic on canvas. The subjects of his art were of what he loved the most; the mountains, animals and his heritage. His works depicted historical Haudenosaunee wampum belts, animals who roamed the Adirondacks and scenes of Indigenous people in
the Adirondacks. For countless visitors to the Six Nations Iroquois Cultural Center (formerly the Six Nations Indian Museum founded by his grandfather Ray Fadden in 1954), Don was the first person they met as they entered the building. He spent summers at the center’s front desk welcoming and greeting guests with a friendly demeanor and hospitable nature. He would interact with visitors as they browsed the gift shop and would always take time to simply visit. He was deeply involved with the dream and vision of the center’s planned
expansion and enthusiastically anticipated it’s realization.
Don is predeceased by his father, John Fadden, who passed away in August of 2022. Don is survived by his sons, Ian and Evan, his mother Eva Fadden, brothers David (Margaret) And Daniel (Kimberly). He is also survived by his nephew Wishe (Leah) and nieces Hailey and
Amber. He was very happy to have met his grandnephew, Logan, this past summer.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY. Per Don’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Karyl P. Willette - April 01, 1949 - February 29, 2024

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Saranac Lake)
Obituary Preview: The Bloomingdale Willette family is profoundly saddened once more. We lost a Husband, a Dad, a Brother , an Uncle, a best Friend, and an OE at 6PM on February 29, 2024. The cold clouds lifted and the Aurora Borealis ushered Karyl to heaven.
“For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time of my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” as St. Paul related ( 2 Timothy 4:6-8)… and as in Karyl Paul’s words , “ I am going over the Mountain”. Born in Saranac Lake, on Friday April 1, 1949, third child of Addie M. (LaFountain) and Paul A. Willette, Karyl Paul Willette, aka Moose, aka OE, of the Bloomingdale Willette's, passed away peacefully at home, with beloved wife Mary, daughter Kara, son Kyl, little
& big grands, siblings and faithful friends by his side.
Moose, a lifelong resident of Bloomingdale is blessed to have lived his rambunctious young life in Bloomingdale with his twelve siblings along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends nearby. A proud graduate of St. Pius X School 1967, he went on to study for a life of hard knocks and opportunities , demonstrating resilience and adaptability. His purpose as a father, provider, spouse, grandfather and friend is lovingly emphasized throughout his life, sharing qualities of unconditional love, strength, and generosity that extended beyond his immediate family to encompass a wide network of loved ones.
Moose, forever blessed and proud of his children Kara and Kyl, touting them as “his greatest accomplishments,” they both found their own families. Moose is joyfully “OE” to Philip, Alexa, Rory, Lauren (Lolo), Faith and Whitney loving them greater than he ever imagined possible.
He was proud to serve and retired from New York State Department of Correctional Services as Plant Utility Engineer (Camp Gabriel’s). Karyl was married to his sweetheart Mary Ann Peria on Saturday, October 7, 1978 in St. Paul’s Church in Bloomingdale, NY. He was baptized in St. Bernard’s Church, May 29, 1949, the godparents were Robert and Sally Jackson. Karyl received the sacrament of Confirmation at the same time on April 30, 1961 at St. Paul’s Church with brother Darryl and sister Cheryl by Bishop Navaugh. Karyl’s sponsor was Tom Cassavaugh, his lifelong friend. Moose was a talented mentor supporting his children and their many friends through out camping, hunting , fishing, and all activities named Sports. He was a life long member of the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department, the Bloomingdale Boosters
with brothers Darryl(Dogger) and Loweyl (Poochie). He also loved his Friday night golf league with partner Sheridan Swinyer , lifelong friend….. never missing The Annual B’dale Classic, no matter what! Moose fully enjoyed helping people like plowing out friends and family members while maintaining CAMP.
His canine companions were most dear to him, truly his best friends, but Lily and Tilly are on the long walk with him now.
And finally, Moose loved teasing, joking, & jesting (politely of course) with his brothers, GG ( Gerryl), Wiggy (Randyl), Poochie(Loweyl), & Dayl , while sharing their sorrows and lifetime joys despite their experiences with their shared inherited kidney disease and now is continuing his journey with GG, Poochie, Dayl, and of course his Momma , old man, and brothers Mitch, Kendyl, & Royl.
Predeceased by his parents and survived by his beloved wife Mary, children Kara (Joel) and Kyl (Sara); most loved grands Philip, Alexa, Rory, Lauren, Faith and Whitney, Moose devoted his life to his family. He was dearly loved by his 12 siblings: Darryl, Cheryl , Gerryl (deceased), Micheyl (deceased) Randyl, Kristyl, Dayl (deceased), Loweyl (deceased), Erryl, Kendyl (deceased), Royl (deceased), and Russyl.
Karyl Paul as his Momma called him, will be sorely missed by his loyal friends, notedly faithful daily visitor Roger Stephenson, family members, and his dialysis family of many years at Adirondack Health. We will always remember his famous “front teeth” grin, his priceless humor, his loving kind eyes for his beloved grandchildren, and mutual admiration displayed from his loyal sidekick, literally best friend pup Lily. Moose will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them- and if you knew him, you knew it. When Karyl’s time came, he truly carried himself with dignity, strength, and full of love for those who went before him. He will be missed dearly. He loved his April Fools Day birthday , and we are sure he is now enjoying his Leap Day departure date. Fare-thee-well, Moose. See you over the Mountain OE. Love you Karyl. Amen!

William Edward Preston - December 06, 1933 - February 06, 2024

Departed: 02/06/2024 (Saranac Lake)
Obituary Preview: William Edward Preston died in his sleep on February 6, 2024, after suffering a traumatic fall 10 days earlier. His wife of 46 years, Frances Preston, was able to ensure that his last days were as pleasant and comfortable as possible, and for that his family is eternally grateful. Known as Bill to his friends, and Billy to his family, he leaves a legacy of family and good friends centered around his passion for skiing and farming. Bill took up skiing as a boy in Montreal, Quebec and the “bug” led to a career as a ski instructor, ski rep, ski racer, and ski school director. His teaching and racing took him all over eastern Canada and the eastern US. In the 1950s, while he was teaching at Mt. Snow in southern Vermont, Bill met his first wife, Catherine. Together they had 3 children: Robert Richardson Preston, James Edward Preston and Victoria Preston Crawford. Bill had his children on skis before they have a memory of even doing so, and the love and passion for the sport he instilled in them remains strong in his surviving children, Jamie and Vic and his two granddaughters, Parker Clare Crawford and Sonja Johnson Preston. To say that the Preston family culture is skiing is an understatement, and even after Bill stopped skiing himself, he loved to be regaled with tales of his family’s adventures on snow.
Bill married Frances, known to all as Franny, in May, 1977 and they moved to Churubusco in 1978, where Bill lived until his death. In the Malone area, he is probably best remembered as the ski school director at Titus Mountain in the 80’s and 90’s. Bill was a local icon who taught and coached untold numbers of skiers, from beginners to experts. He also started the racing program at Titus and for many years was the head coach of the Titus Ski Team. You can find skiers from coast to coast who will talk not only about his distinct style on the hill, but the impact he had on them as individuals. In addition to skiing, Bill was an avid and excellent golfer and tennis player, and he passed the love of those sports on to his children. His other passion was farming, and for 10 years he and Franny raised purebred Jerseys as dairy replacements. Bill also loved gardening, and while he would sometimes bemoan the time he spent maintaining his property in Churubusco, he truly loved every hour he spent tending his vegetable and flower gardens, working with his chainsaw, or on his tractor or mower. If Bill could get outside, he would, and all the better if the sun was shining brightly!
Bill was born on December 6, 1933 in Hamilton, Ontario, the only child of William Edward Preston and Helen Johnson Preston. He grew up in Montreal and graduated from Hampstead High School. Phyllis Feinberg - January 15, 1935 - January 19, 2024

Departed: 01/19/2024 (Saranac Lake)
Obituary Preview: PHYLLIS KRINOVITZ FEINBERG
On January 19, 2024, Phyllis Feinberg, 89, passed away peacefully at her winter home in Pompano Beach, Florida after an extended illness. A third-generation native and lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, New York, she was the only child of Irving and Alice Krinovitz. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1956, she married Philip S. Feinberg, her husband of 67 years.
As a teenager in the early 1950’s, Phyllis was one of the prominent figure skaters in the United States. She was a protégée of the legendary Lake Placid coach, Gus Lussi, and a contemporary and close friend of Olympic gold medalists Dick Button, Tenley Albright and Canadian champion, Carole Pachl Pedvis, with whom she trained. Though she retired from competition in 1953 to attend college, she continued to give skating exhibitions for a number of years. Later, she taught skating to young children in Saranac Lake as a volunteer. During the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, she mentored the delegation of Chinese skaters upon learning that they had no experience in international competition and no coach. Skating remained one of her greatest passions throughout her life.
Her other passions included travel and the performing arts. Her trips to various places around the globe were as legendary among her contemporaries as her ice skating. Due to her work with the Chinese figure skaters, she was an honored guest in China in the early 1980’s shortly after the country opened to Western tourism. She also traveled extensively throughout other parts of Asia, Europe and North America, with additional forays to South America, Africa and Australia. She visited every continent on the globe except for Antarctica. Her curiosity of other cultures, willingness to open her home to others, interest in historic landmarks, and desire to collect art and artifacts resulted in many cherished international friendships.
Primarily a homemaker and mother to her two children, Wayne and Lisa, Phyllis volunteered for numerous community organizations and projects. She was particularly involved with Saranac Lake General Hospital/Adirondack Health as a volunteer and as a chair of the annual Saranac Lake Antique Show which benefited the hospital.
More recently, Phyllis served on the board of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta. She also worked part time as the office/rental manager at DeChantel Apartments for over 20 years. Her hobbies included golf, tennis, water-aerobics, reading biographies, gemology, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint.
She is survived by her husband Philip, children Wayne Feinberg and Lisa Feinberg Ballard (Jack Ballard), and three grandchildren Hannah Feinberg O’Neal (Adam O’Neal), Parker Densmore and Palmer Feinberg.

Douglas Giles Bombard - December 06, 1932 - December 31, 2023

Departed: 12/31/2023 (Saranac Lake)
Obituary Preview: Douglas Giles “Dougo” Bombard was born on December 6, 1932, at the old hospital in Saranac Lake. He was the second child of five, of Alfred Douglas Bombard, garage and gas station owner, and Charlotte Littlejohn, eventual manager of the Adirondack Store, both of Saranac Lake. Douglas grew up skiing in winter and fishing and hunting through the warmer months, ranging the river and woods with his friends and siblings when not working at his father’s garage. He learned to fly a plane and fix an engine. He had a job delivering flowers to curing tuberculosis patients in the cottages around town. He knew everybody. In the January when Doug was 16, his father and his father’s best friend Dr. Charles Haskins (village GP) were driving up the river to the Haskins family camp when their car went through the ice just a little way above the upper locks. When his father did not come home, Doug walked up the river and found the hole in the ice. The next few years were lean to say the least. Doug and his family made do as best they could. There was a solitary coal stove in the kitchen and frost on the walls in winter. His mother had never written a check. His older sister, Natalie Bombard (Leduc) came home from school at St Lawrence. (She later taught at Paul Smith’s for years, locally taught generations of SL children to swim and ski, sold real estate, was caretaker at Pine Ridge and generally contributed in every which way to her village.) They sold the garage and gas station (which is now Amerigas on Church Street). Doug finished high school and immediately enlisted in the Navy in 1950, listing his family as dependents. He trained as an aircraft mechanic and machinist and was stationed in Florida, Cuba, Virginia and Newfoundland when not aboard carriers. He attended night school while in the Navy, taking Dale Carnegie business classes. He loved Newfoundland for its starkness and beauty, and he loved the evening shift. “I could get up just in time to make chow in the morning and then spend a few hours playing golf with the officers’ wives” He would grin while telling the tale. He never could turn away a pretty girl. (Shirley “Ham” and Dorothy you know this even now.)
Dougo loved the Navy and would have stayed, but despite acing the promotional exams, he was “unpromotable” because of the large number of WWII veterans still serving who (deservedly) got preference. By this time, Doug’s younger brother, Jon Bombard, had enlisted in the Army (at age 15, a bit of the malarkey in that one too. Jon grew up to be able to turn his hand to just about anything. And did.). His youngest brother, Jim Bombard (an immensely talented ski racer, colleague of Jean Claude Killy and ski designer for Head and K2), enlisted in the Air Force subsequently. With only his baby sister Madeline Bombard (Paleschi Wells, later a passionate wildlife advocate and environmentalist) at home with his mother, and without opportunity for advancement available in the Navy for at least 5-10 years, Dougo decided to come home.
He had some glorious summers, running the boat livery and the water ski school at the Saranac Inn, and delivering the Lower Saranac mail. He enrolled at Paul Smiths on a ski scholarship, competing quite successfully in Nordic, Ski Jumping and Alpine events. As part of his scholarship, he rucked a Ford engine uphill and built a rope tow one cold winter. When he complained to the dean that this was not what the basketball athletes had to do to earn their tuition, he was cautioned against measuring his worth by comparing himself to others. He never forgot it.
He graduated with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management with a special interest in pastries and desserts. He later acknowledged that he probably needed the calories.
He was the general manager at Mt. Pisgah when Whiteface opened. He said, “it about sucked all the air right out of the place”. Everyone wanted to experience the new big thing. Dougo decided it was time to stretch his wings again.
He bought a building in Turn, NY and converted it into a Ski Dorm. He had little money, but he was ingenious. He fashioned walls from leftovers and plumbed washtubs into sinks. There were a piano and a kitchen and men’s and women’s bunk rooms, and joy and drink and song. He taught skiing at nearby Snow Ridge and met and befriended the likes of Rudy Kuersteiner, and Ish and Mike Arnold, and Tom Tinney. And he met a smart, beautiful girl named Louie Schaefer, who came to learn to ski. She was a gate agent at Mohawk Airlines, and a photographer, and a travel guide. She was athletic and funny and kind. She had a thousand-watt smile and she knew how to use it. He was smitten. They were partners for the next 61 years.
The dorm burned to the ground one winter, but as always Dougo landed on his feet. (“It’s the journey” he would say, when met with any adversity, of which he met many.) He had married Louie, and had befriended one Peter Noyes, who was busily running his family business, Oneida Silversmiths. “Pete” offered Dougo a job, and he began designing and selling trophies for the company, establishing accounts from the eastern seaboard to Denver, and even in Bermuda (there is a great photo of him there riding a moped, carrying a briefcase, wearing shorts and a sporty wine-colored blazer).
Dougo and Louie moved to Fayetteville, NY and spent their spare time skiing in winter and boating on the St. Lawrence with friends in the summer. They had a houseboat with a 20-horse motor in Alex Bay, which they laughingly named “Thunder”. In 1969, they bought land in Manlius, NY and built their dream home. In 1971, their only child, daughter Tiffany, was born.
Dougo worked variously buying and selling Tucker Snow Cats, quarry/explosive supplies, Euclid trucks, weigh batchers, conveyors and heavy construction equipment. He owned and ran a concrete company named Phoenix Ready Mix for a decade. He built conveyers. He ran a company which recycled building debris and slag. He bought, sold, flew, and re-built small airplanes with his friend Ron Jones and adopted son Brian Coughlin. He and Louie bought an RV they named Snoopy and vacationed in the Florida Keys when they could, eventually buying a home there which they exuberantly enjoyed with Bill Kellogg, Bev and Jim Buck, Dick and Shiela Byrnes, Paul and Twila Webb, Robert Sherman, Tommy and Sandy Burns and other deeply loved, merrymaking friends. Through it all, he skied and taught skiing, at Toggenburg with Dan Frank, Jim Morris and “Doc” Hickey, and at Whiteface with Aleks Smith, Eddi Kreil, Don Dew, Bart Hayes and the gang. He taught his daughter to carve a turn, understand physics, type a letter, hot prop an airplane and run a chainsaw. He was a wonderful father, colleague and friend.
Dougo and Louie moved back home to Saranac Lake in 2018, where he was known and loved by many. His last years were made more whole by Mim Millar, Bob Seidenstein, Don and Doris Hamm, Charlie Jerry, Laurie and Don Rumble, Sandy Hayes, Mary Weston and more. He continued to ski last year at age 90, and could still fashion a turn like no other.
Doug often was heard to say “if you fall without your head downhill, you weren’t really going for it”. Go for it he did. All the way.
Dougo is sadly predeceased by his wife, Louie, his parents and all of his siblings. He leaves behind about a million friends (please pardon me if I did not mention you by name. He loved you no less.) as well as his daughter Tiffany, who loves him deeply, his adopted daughter Theo Pirkl, adopted sons David Demand and Marc Minkler and Matt Morgan, his dog Lola, and his beloved nieces and nephews: Doug, Debbie, Michael and Kathy Corl; Dan Tromblee; Kimberly, Nancy, Madelyn, and Jon Bombard; James, Vincent and Charlotte Paleschi, and John and Cathy Pollard.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. There will be no calling hours per Doug’s wishes. Please send donations to Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad, who has served the family and our village with an amazing combination of skill and kindness for many decades. (PO Box 431Saranac Lake, NY 12983) Please send flowers to the Emergency Department staff at Adirondack Medical Center. Because, as we all know, they are awesome and in need of our love and thanks from us all.
A memorial service will be announced in the summer. Doug’s ashes will be scattered at Whiteface, which was his wish. Family and friends wishing to remember Douglas Giles “Dougo” Bombard may share a memory, leave a condolence and sign the on-line guest book at www.fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
