Suzan A. Derenne - January 16, 1947 - March 25, 2022

Departed: 03/25/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Suzan Ann (nee’ Matthes) (Saron) Derenne was born on January 16, 1947, in Milwaukee, WI, and died on March 25, 2022 in Phoenix, AZ. She was the only child of Edward W. and Matilda Ann Matthes. Most of her early life was in Chicago but she also spent considerable time with her grandparents Eugene F. and Erna Matthes in Milwaukee. He was a railroad train mechanic and took her for many train rides on his off days, just for fun. She also spent time with her beloved grandmother Ann (“Nanie”) and her husband Joseph (“Boppum”) Mias at their restaurants in downtown Milwaukee and in then-rural Cedarburg, WI. As a child she took baton and ballet lessons. She once led the Independence Day Parade while twirling down Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee. She met Gary Player at a golf tournament after ducking under the ropes and obtained his autograph (“He was very handsome.”). She graduated from Homestead High School, Mequon, WI and from Spencerian College, Milwaukee, where she was a member of the Pi Rho Zeta sorority. She attended Loyola School of Art, Chicago and Layton School of Art, Milwaukee. She was active in silversmithing for several years. She moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI in 1975 where she quickly learned there was no train station. She served as president of the Parent-Teacher Group, was active with Tiger Cubs and was a Brownie Scout leader. She served on the Sturgeon Bay school board, volunteered with Door County Social Services and, with her husband Scott, was a foster parent. Art was always a part of her life and she displayed and sold many of her works at art fairs in Door County, WI as well as helping her kids with painting projects. Her many occupations include secretary at a realty, medical clinic assistant, store detective Boston Store, model for a clothing store and SAS airlines trunk show, advertising department and model Trane Company, dispatcher and undercover work Brookfield, WI police department, night security patrol at a shipyard and jail matron in Door County. Because she wanted a job that paid “the same as a man’s”, she became a nationally registered paramedic, working for a short time with an ambulance service in the Fox Valley and for 21 years with the Door County Emergency Medical Service, a job she was very good at and thoroughly enjoyed. She always appreciated “her” volunteer First Responders. Her children were at the center of her heart. She was given advice – “Love your children like every day is their last” – and she did. Make no mistake, she made sure her kids (and just about everyone else) were accountable for their actions and behavior; the epitome of tough love. Her directness was unmistakable but she called it like she saw it and was brutally honest, and was right 99% of the time (100% in her opinion). She demanded responsibility. She married her husband Scott in 1992 and says she always felt safe and cared for. After her retirement she enjoyed their home on Cove Road, visits from her children and step-kids and their families, her jet ski and sailing. She even did a little skiing, once obtaining a round of applause from a group at the bottom of the hill watching her take 20 minutes to get down. She loved her Maltese, Daisy, just about more than anything else in the world. She and Scott (and Daisy) have resided in Phoenix, AZ since 2017, where her clothes ironing load has gone to zero. She is survived by her husband Scott, children Brad (Brooke) Saron, Brook (Cary) Jeanquart, Brent (Linda) Saron, Brandon (Chris) Saron and stepchildren Emily Derenne (Matt Bain), Anton (Trudie) Derenne and Sam (Lana) Derenne. She has 15 grandchildren. She is also very appreciative of her soulmate and best friend, Diane (Grimmer) Laws, with whom she had great conversations, lots of fun and many laughs. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Chandler Regional Medical Center. Please consider donating in Suzi’s name to your favorite animal welfare agency. Private committal services will be at St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum with Rev. Dr. Matthew Knapp officiating.  On-line condolences may be offered at forbesfuneralhome.com

Carl Scholz - December 15, 1927 - March 16, 2022

Departed: 03/16/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: A good and loving man died today, March 16, 2022. Carl Scholz was determined to make the world a better place. Besides his love of family, his love of Door County was evident in all that he did. Education and environmental issues were his passion, he never ceased to teach about the wonders of the natural world. Carl was born on a farm near Waubeka, Wisconsin to Philip and Hattie (Opperman) Scholz on December 15, 1927. At 17, he joined the Army and become a paratrooper and served in the Pacific, spending a year in Japan in the occupation Army. He then went on to graduate from UW Madison. In 1951 Carl became an agriculture teacher at Sevastopol School. After 3 years of teaching, he was asked by the school board to be superintendent. At 26 years old he agreed to take the job for one year—convinced by the board to continue—he went on to earn a master’s degree and 34 years later retired from the Sevastopol School System.
Carl also met his wife Ruth in 1951 in Door County and where they built their life together, never wanting to live anywhere else. They were married in Ruth’s hometown Weyauwega, Wisconsin. Blessed with four children, Marsha (Dana) Lindh, Jane (David) Raben, Jon (Joan) Scholz and Carla Scholz. His pride and joy in his children, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were evident in everything he shared with them; a love of education, the natural world, and the simple things in life. Family gatherings were dear to him and Ruth.
Carl often expressed his love for Door County and especially the Sevastopol School community. Education for every child was important to him. He was adept at finding ways to turn non-achieving students into achievers.
In 1965, he and Ruth with three other couples started The Farm, a living museum of rural America. Orv and Sally Schopf were their partners for many years. Eventually, the Scholzs owned The Farm and continued to run it until 2002. The Farm honored his pride in Wisconsin’s heritage and his dedication to education and preserving rural America.
Carl belonged to many environmental organizations. He served on countless boards and never gave up fighting for what was right for the protection of our natural resources. He stood up for many environmental initiatives such as stopping the mines from polluting our rivers, opposing the PCB’s in the Fox River, and developing Whitefish Dunes as a state park. He was influential in many land acquisitions for preservation by The Land Trust. He was on The Ridges board for many years, including serving as president for 15 years. Carl was honored by environmental groups such as Door County Land Trust, Champion of Champions from Lakeshore National Resources Partnership, State Farmer for the FFA, Door County Environmentalist, Governors award for conservation, and many more. Thousands of trees along the canal in Door County were planted under his supervision by the Sevastopol Conservation Club. In the 1960s his creative development of the Sevastopol School EcoLab (an outdoor classroom) without taxpayer money is still an essential resource in the community. He took truckloads of trees to Wisconsin communities that suffered losses from tornadoes. Carl was instrumental in constructing the first Door County sanitary district for Institute and Valmy.
His belief in quality education in all public schools was paramount. When a director of Door County Special Education was needed, he volunteered and did the job for two years. He opposed state negative aid which would have taken tax money from Door County districts and given it to other districts in the state. He often said that the people of the community, the teachers, and the staff at Sevastopol were the best.
In later years, Carl and Ruth enjoyed traveling the world including fulfilling a goal of visiting the city of Sevastopol in Ukraine. With the recent tragic events, he spent hours reviewing photos from that memorable trip. As Carl liked to tell, the word “Sevastopol” means a place of glory. Carl and Ruth have been members of Bay View Lutheran Church for over 60 years.
There is much more that could be told of his accomplishments but already Carl would say, “enough”.
Carl is survived by his wife (Ruth), four children, and ten grandchildren, Jon (Sarah) Lindh, Allison (Alfonso) Lindh, Andrew (Brittany) Lindh, Anna Raben, Molly Raben, Dustin (Kaitlin) Scholz, Erica (Eric) Abrahamson, Emily (Scott) Walker, Philip Mueller and Emma Mueller, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Thank you for the loving care from the angels at Anna’s Healthcare and Unity Hospice.

Ray LeBrun - October 07, 1933 - March 08, 2022

Departed: 03/08/2022 (Sturgeon Bay)
Obituary Preview: Raphael Joseph LeBrun, 88, of Brussels, passed away on March 8, 2022, with his family around him, following a long illness.
Ray was born Oct. 7, 1933, in De Pere, the son of Margaret (Loehlein) and John "Jack" LeBrun. The oldest of 11 children, Ray attended St. Mary's School in De Pere and graduated from St. Norbert High School in 1952, a few months after his father died. Soon after, Ray was drafted by the U.S. Army, taking a troop ship bound for Korea, serving with the Seventh Infantry Division from 1954-1956.
After the Army, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout on the G.I. Bill, earning a B.S. in Industrial Arts Education in 1961, and a master's degree in Vocational Education in 1978.
He married Mary Hutchison on Aug. 24, 1957 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in New London. They started their family living in a campus Quonset hut while Ray studied at Stout, and then settled in Door County in 1961, when Ray began teaching industrial arts at Southern Door High School. During the summers, he worked at Van's Lumber and Palmer Johnson Yachts. In 1968 he began teaching construction and fine woodworking at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, where he worked until his retirement in 1993. He also taught summer school and adult defensive driving.
Ray was a member of St. Louis Catholic Parish in Dyckesville, as well as St. Francis Catholic Church in Brussels and St. Mary of the Snows, Namur. He was a member of the Brussels Lions Club for 25 years and enjoyed volunteering for the Bishop's Charities games with the Green Bay Packers.
He enjoyed traveling to England, Ireland, Hawaii, fishing trips to Canada and Alaska, and visiting family throughout the U.S. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, fine woodworking and building, and was especially interested in science, history and politics. With his family he shared his strong faith and love of the Holy Spirit and the power of prayer, as well as his wonder and awe for nature.
His children have many fond memories of his appreciation for the wonders of the world. When his children were young he would wake them in the middle of the night to see a lunar eclipse or watch the northern lights dance over the bay. He would yell "Comet!" and they would bound down the stairs, sleepy-eyed, to take their turn with the binoculars to see the awesome sight in the night sky.
In recent years he spent time socializing with his wife, Mary, their children and grandchildren and many friends, especially at home in Door County, where he enjoyed driving his scooter up Bay Shore Road for hours, stopping to chat with neighbors.
It was impossible to go out in public with him when he wasn't stopped by people whose lives he touched in a positive way. "Hi, Mr. LeBrun!" they would say, and then often, they would thank him for teaching them woodworking, construction or the skills they needed to work in the shipyards or other industries. Or it might be one of his nieces and nephews, a cousin or a friend — he would share a joke or a laugh or words of advice on how to fix something, and in recent years, how to fix what's wrong in this world.
Besides his wife, he is survived by seven children and their spouses: John and Kathy (Leege) LeBrun, Eau Claire; Margaret LeBrun and David Allen, Sturgeon Bay; D'Ann (LeBrun) and Peter Jackson, Sturgeon Bay; Robert and Jackie (Devos) LeBrun, Green Bay; David and Becky (Dorsher) LeBrun, Sturgeon Bay; Darrin and Mary (Meyer) LeBrun, Wausau; and Jaymi LeBrun and Dan Scollan, St. Paul, Minn.
He is survived by 13 grandchildren: Katie, Joseph and Nathaniel LeBrun; Raphael and Samuel Allen and Amy Maniola; Callie (LeBrun) and Chris Kolarik, Riese and Veronica LeBrun; Bryce LeBrun and Braedyn Bosilovatz, Jonathan, Anna LeBrun; Matthew and Sean LeBrun.
He is also survived by his siblings: Sister Doris Jean LeBrun of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Milwaukee; Dorothy and Jim Euclide, Dover, Penn., Eunice (LeBrun) Pozza, Treasure Lake, Penn., Marilyn (LeBrun) and Larry Gillis, New Berlin; Don and Jan (Schneider) LeBrun, Green Bay; Mary (LeBrun) Gandt, De Pere; Gloria (LeBrun-Robertson) Tennesson, Green Bay; Roger and Diana (Hayes), California; Joanne (LeBrun) and Steve Madson, Green Bay; and Samantha (LeBrun) Keenan, San Diego. He is also survived by his in-laws: Tom Hutchison, Green Bay; Dr. Margaret Hutchison, Bill and Darlene Hutchison and Judy and Bob Fischer, all of New London; Nancy Schlafer, Appleton; and David and Kathy Hutchison, New London. "Uncle Ray" was also survived by 69 nieces and nephews and many more great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by in-laws: Ann (Makowski) LeBrun, Jim and Roberta (Hutchison) Prunty, Frank Schlafer, Linda (Kooyman) LeBrun, Joe Pozza, Jerry Gandt, Marian (Rulseh) Hutchison, Norman Balthazar, Betty (Hutchison) Balthazar, and Jim Keenan. Also preceding him in death were three nieces: Carla Robertson, Rebecca Madson Leach and Laurie (LaMarche) Carlton.
Ray was very proud of each of his children and grandchildren and loved them all deeply. They will treasure the memory of his hearty laugh, and the sound of him whistling a familiar tune as he worked in his shop, walked into the house or watched the sun go down on the bay.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2022, at St. Louis Parish, Dyckesville. A visitation will continue at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12 until the time of Mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Burial will be at the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church Cemetery in New London.
