Burton David Shapiro - May 26, 1935 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (NORTH ADAMS)
Obituary Preview: Burton David (Burt) Shapiro died peacefully on April 29, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts surrounded by his loved ones. He now will now join the light of his life, Melinda Tanzman, who died just this past year on December 21. Burt loved life and made the most of each day while overcoming many challenges. Most of all Burt cherished his family. He put all of his family first and foremost. He was a devoted son to his parents, Isadore and Lillian Oglensky Shapiro; he was a devoted brother to his sister Selma and brothers Edward and Stuart; he was a devoted husband to his cherished wife, Melinda Tanzman, and he was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather to their large, blended, and beautiful family. He cherished his children unequivocally: his sons, Andrew and Loren from his first marriage to Linda Herbits in 1959; and Melinda’s children from their marriage in 1980, Beth, George, David, and Jayson. He also devoted himself wholeheartedly to his children’s spouses: Christine, Jeanie, Craig, Phelia, Jenifer, and to his grandchildren, Max, Nina, Casey, Leah, Rachel, Ben, and Kaitlin, and to his two great grandchildren, Alexis and Sam. He was a man with an endless capacity to love and he was so loved in return.
Burt was born on May 26, 1935, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Isadore and Lillian. The oldest of four children, Burt grew up in North Adams and became involved in the fabric of the town. He graduated from Union College in 1957, served in the U.S Army stateside and upon discharge, joined the family business, A. Shapiro & Sons, which had fascinated him from the time he was a little boy. He just loved going to the shop and working with his father. He often quoted his father’s maxim in business: “Dad taught me honesty, and he taught me to always give the customer the best deal he can get.” He was a long-time time member of Congregation Beth Israel, always active in its social fabric and in the community it served. He served as President for many years, continuing the work begun by his grandfather Abraham and his father Isadore.
When he and Melinda married in 1980, they moved to Williamstown, Massachusetts. They played tennis regularly, Burt tended to his amazing garden, and they had a wonderful life together. Later, when Burt’s business wasn’t as all-consuming, they moved to Stephentown, New York, so that they could be closer to Melinda’s work in Albany. Burt cheerfully embraced his now much longer commute to North Adams, usually listening to classical music, an audiobook or NPR, or simply spending the time catching up on the phone with any one of his children or siblings. He loved their life and home in Stephentown, surrounded by beautiful birch trees and his even more expansive garden that overflowed with amazing vegetables every year. He had a passion for hanging flowers, which he hung all around the outside of their home. While they weren’t working, Burt and Melinda regularly traveled to Southwestern Florida for as much time as their busy careers allowed.
In addition to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he is survived by his cherished sister and brother, Selma and Stuart. A younger brother Edward and son David predeceased him.

Colson James Flynn - April 04, 2024 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (NORTH ADAMS)
Obituary Preview: Colson James Flynn, sweet baby boy of Charles Thomas Flynn IV and Desiree Brieanna Pechtel was born sleeping on April 4th, 2024 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington Vermont.
Though he was too perfect for the world and never spent time on earth with us, he spent 9 months in the womb showing everyone his spunk. From loving his dads cooking, humming and rubs; not letting mom get a full night's sleep because of his gymnastic skills, to wanting to wait until he got into the world to show us all of his features and not wanting to get a good image on the ultrasound.
He was our little waterbug who left the pond we live in and morphed into a beautiful dragonfly to explore his new world above us. As he wanders, he places his arms around us as we weep, watching us wish the days away, begging to have him home, sending us signs to know we are not alone. He waits until his loved ones become drangonflies too to show his new beautiful world of the sun and air.
Survivors in addition to his parents include his maternal grandfather and grandmother, Duane and Antonella Pechtel of Delanson, NY; his paternal grandfather and grandmother, Travis and Shannon Dozier of Adams, MA and several aunts, uncles, and cousins whom loved him dearly.

Departed: 03/31/2024 (NORTH ADAMS)
Obituary Preview: Ernest (Ernie) Ralph Tatro Jr, 60 of North Adams died Sunday March 31, 2024 at Williamstown Commons after a battle with Alzhiemer's. He passed surrounded by his loving family and good friends.
Ernie was born in North Adams on March 3, 1964 a son of the late Ernest Tatro Sr and Nancy (Darling) Alibozek. He graduated from Drury High school and was last employed by Hillcrest Commons where he worked for 22 years. He worked in many positions there including Director of Environmental. On November 9, 1990 he married the love of his life, Theresa (Terry) and together they shared 33 years of marriage. Ernie took on the role of step dad to Terry's son Josh without hesitation. Soon after they welcomed their daughter Gina and completed their family. Ernie was the definition of a family guy, his family was his world and he would do anything for them. You could often find him doing various school projects for his children, and in his later years fixing Gina's car or doing home and yard projects the kids would ask for.
If the weather was nice, you would find Ernie outside. His fourth love was his yard, if he wasn't mowing the lawn, he was in his garden, picking weeds, maintaining the pool or in his garage arranging his tools. He would always find something to do to keep him outside. In the winter he would anticipate the ice thickening so he and the family, including the dog, could go ice fishing with his siblings and friends.
He shared a love of fishing, during his free time he would be out on his boat with Josh or kayaking with his wife and family. Ernie also enjoyed gardening. What started out as a hobby with his father in law, Karl, he soon took it over when Karl was unable to maintain the garden any longer. Ernie prided himself on keeping the garden alive for Karl and worked hard every year to keep it going. He and Gina enjoyed cooking together and coming up with new things to try, canning sauce, making jam and coming up with fun cooking concoctions. He loved time with his wife and family, taking spur of the moment road trips for the weekend and beach trips brought him happiness.
Ernie leaves his wife, Terry (LaPine) Tatro of North Adams, his son Josh Sweet and his fiancée Kayla, daughter Gina Beverly and her husband Joey, and one grandson Theodore all of North Adams. He also leaves his siblings Todd Tatro (Donna) of North Adams, Wendy Laughlin (Rick) of Adams, nieces and nephews and many cousins and extended family and friends including Bob Witruk, his longtime caregiver. John Michael Hyde - June 16, 1930 - March 28, 2024

Departed: 03/28/2024 (NORTH ADAMS)
Obituary Preview: Professor John Michael Hyde obituary
On Thursday, March 28, 2024, John Michael Hyde, Brown Professor of History, Emeritus, at Williams College, passed away peacefully in his home at Sweetwood Retirement Community in Williamstown, MA. He was 93 years old.
John was born on June 16, 1930 in Wichita, KS to parents George A. Hyde and Helen McCarthy Hyde. He was the third of five children, which included older brother George, sister Elizabeth and younger brothers, Arthur and Steve.
In June 1948, John graduated from Tower Hill School, a private day school in Wilmington, DE, and entered Williams College that fall. While John’s college career was interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Navy (1951–55), he ultimately returned to Williams, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude in June 1956, with a Bachelor’s degree in History. As an undergraduate, John was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity and a Junior Advisor.
Following graduation, he completed his Master’s Degree in History at the University of Minnesota (1957), and then received a fellowship to Harvard University. After his first two years at Harvard, he was offered an instructor position in the History Department at Williams and returned to the Berkshires in the fall of 1959, ultimately completing his Doctorate in History in 1963, while simultaneously teaching full-time at Williams.
As a faculty member for 36 years, John also served as the Dean of Freshman (1963–67), Dean of the College (1967–70), and Chair of the History Department (1975–76, 1980–81, 1983–86.) He officially retired in June 1995, remaining in Williamstown, where you could often find him supporting the Ephs from the sidelines, enjoying lunch on Spring Street, or attending Sunday services at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he was a lifelong member. John also led numerous Williams Alumni Trips throughout the world, and was continually referred to as “Dean Hyde Sir”, with great affection by alumni, young and old.
In 2002, John was awarded the Rogerson’s Cup – Williams’ highest honor for alumni service – which embodies outstanding loyalty, achievement, and service in the name of Williams.
His legacy of teaching at the college continues with the John Hyde Teaching Fellowship, established in 2016, and given to select senior faculty, encouraging versatility in teaching and development of courses that promote broad-based learning.
Along with possessing a deep love for Canadian history, John was an amazing storyteller and Hyde family historian. As an avid traveler with a passion for the railroads, he enjoyed traveling the world by train on multiple occasion. John loved leading family sing-alongs, where he would either play the accordion or piano. And up through his mid-80s, he spent many summers on Lake Temagami in Northern Ontario, at the Hyde family cottage.
John is survived by his sisters-in-law, Alison (Arthur) Hyde and Sally (Steve) Hyde, twelve nieces and nephews, and sixteen grandnieces and grandnephews. He is predeceased by his four siblings.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 11:00am at Thompson Memorial Chapel on the Williams College campus followed by a reception at the Williams Inn from 1:00 – 3:00pm.

It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to notify others of a person's death and provide information about their life, achievements, and surviving family members. It also serves as a way to share memories, express condolences, and celebrate the person's life.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise and respectful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services, donations in lieu of flowers, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually brief, ranging from 100 to 200 words. Online obituaries can be longer, often up to 500 words or more, allowing for a more detailed and personalized tribute.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's death, typically including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute that provides additional information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to share memories and help others remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may have specific requirements for content, format, and deadlines. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflection and self-expression. If you choose to do so, consider sharing your draft with loved ones to ensure accuracy and completeness.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional printed obituary. It's published on websites, social media platforms, or online memorials, allowing friends and family to share condolences, memories, and tributes from anywhere in the world.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep them online permanently, while others may remove them after a certain period. Be sure to check with the platform or website for their specific policies.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Online obituary platforms usually allow you to make changes or corrections to the original text. However, it's essential to review your work carefully before publishing to avoid errors or inaccuracies.

What is a guest book or condolence message?

A guest book or condolence message is a digital space where friends and family can leave messages of sympathy, share memories, or offer words of comfort to the grieving family. These messages are often attached to the online obituary or memorial page.

How do I respond to condolence messages?

You're not obligated to respond individually to each condolence message. A simple acknowledgement or thank-you note can be posted on the guest book or memorial page to express your appreciation for the support and kind words.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

What is a memorial service or celebration of life?

Can I reuse an existing obituary for another publication?

If you've already published an obituary in one newspaper or online platform, you can usually reuse it for another publication with minimal modifications. Be sure to check with each publication for their specific guidelines and requirements.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may charge by word count or line count; others may offer package deals or flat fees. Be prepared to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.
