Jean Ellen Martielli - March 31, 1961 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Miami)
Obituary Preview: Jean Ellen Martielli, known as Quinn, passed away on March 21, 2024, in Miami, FL. Her sudden passing was due to complications following a minor medical procedure.
Quinn was the beloved sister to Susan Martielli, JD, and Carol Martielli. Born in Baltimore on March 31, 1961, Quinn was raised in Ellicott City, MD, and graduated from Mt. Hebron High School. She was preceded in death by her parents John Martielli, DDS, and Claire Belsinger Martielli. The family often visited Quinn in Miami Beach, where she moved to practice acupuncture. She lived in an historic art deco property in the South Beach area.
An alumna of the Maryland Institute College of Art, Quinn received her BFA in Painting in 1987. In addition to her artistic talent, Quinn was a natural healer. Her pursuit of knowledge and non-traditional healing arts took her to the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in Santa Fe, NM, where she earned her degree in 1992. Quinn was proud of having furthered her studies in China, where she absorbed tenets of the ancient art of acupuncture at the Beijing and Heilongjiang Colleges of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Quinn's professional life was a testament to her commitment to wellness and holistic health. Certified by the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, she established a private practice in acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in Miami Beach, FL. For more than 25 years, she provided care to many in her community and beyond, and learned other techniques that included massage and diet. She was respected as a healer and also became a friend to many of her patients.
In tandem with her medical practice, Quinn's artistic endeavors never ceased. Her office doubled as a gallery, displaying her paintings that reflected many local landmarks and the visual beauty of the Miami area. Quinn was successful at selling her paintings. Her mediums and artistic styles were diverse and ranged from realistic to whimsical.
Quinn's interests spanned beyond her professional life. She had long studied astrology and eventually became a professional and provided insight and guidance to others through the stars. She cherished the companionship of her local rescued feral cats.
Travel played a significant role in her younger years, broadening her perspective. She lived in Alaska and Colorado, where she enjoyed white water rafting and hiking in the mountains and desert. She had a special connection to the American West. Those who knew Quinn would describe her as creative, intelligent and perhaps unusual. She amassed stories that amused friends and family. She offered acupuncture, massage and healing to others. It was her “gift.”
Quinn had recently relocated to the foot of the beautiful mountains of Western Virginia and was looking forward to a new beginning. She planned to work on her art and her studies. Quinn had begun to settle into the welcoming artistic community of Rappahannock County. She was continuing her life of purpose, looking forward to enjoying her many passions and being closer to family.
Quinn left unexpectedly and too soon. Her sisters hope that her life's work and memories she inspired will continue to influence those who knew her. Her sisters ask those who knew and loved Quinn to honor her memory in their own ways. She leaves behind a legacy of creativity and healing that touched many lives.

Phyllis Markoff - March 21, 1930 - March 05, 2024

Departed: 03/05/2024 (Miami)
Obituary Preview: PHYLLIS MARKOFF OBITUARY MARCH 21, 1930—MARCH 5, 2024
Phyllis Leonore (Fischer) Markoff, glamorous hostess and wisecracker extraordinaire, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, died on March 5, 2024 in Boca Raton, Florida. She would have been 94 this month.
Born and raised in Brooklyn by their loving parents, it was all about family. Phyllis and her younger sister Barbara (aka Bobby) spent weekends with their extended family—Saturdays at one grandparents’ and Sundays at the other’s. Relatives abounded and days were filled with music, laughter, and food. Around the 1940s, in summer, the family began taking their traditions to the Catskills, and ultimately to Barron’s Bungalow Colony, next to the Flagler Hotel, where the Fischer girls, and subsequently their children, spent lively summers in close quarters with cousins, aunts, uncles, and families from Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Phyllis was artistic from her earliest days. In high school she joined the Art Squad. She took up sketching family members, musicians at concerts, lecturers, babies, elders—anyone in view. Her mother got a kick out of recognizing people on the page. She made signs for community organizations, drew covers for her kids’ reports, taught herself to use water colors and paint, and even learned calligraphy and addressed wedding invitations.
She befriended artists and eventually got formal training, including proper painting technique, notably with Arlene Skutch and The Pink House Group in Westport. She exhibited and sold some of her paintings, while others adorned the walls of her house and the homes and offices of her kids, friends, and relatives.
Phyllis also studied piano. As a school girl, she would ride the subway 1 ½ hours each way for her half-hour lesson in Manhattan. As an adult, she occasionally showed off with a Mozart sonata or Clair de Lune.
At 20, along with a robust social life (concerts, shows, dancing), Phyllis started work at the Fabric Leather Company. She assisted one of the owners and eventually moved into design. Phyllis traveled countrywide, to Canada, and was even scheduled to go to China but for a memorable date with husband-to-be Del Markoff. Exiting the cab, she greeted him with a sassy, “Best blind date YOU ever had!” After day 1, Del had qualified to meet her parents. The weekend ended with a proposal, and they married 7 weeks later.
Once married, Phyllis relocated first to Evanston and then to Highland Park, IL where she raised her family and became active in community organizations. She also worked in PR for the Arlington Park Race Track. In June of 1972, the family moved to Westport, CT where she served as president of Temple Israel for 6 years and president of Y’s Women. She was also a literacy and hospice volunteer in Bridgeport.
In 2018, a year after becoming a widow—after nearly 62 years of marriage to Del—Phyllis moved to Florida to join her angelic sister. The two were notorious “gamblers” (i.e., played Rummikub nightly at the dining room table), reminisced, were regularly visited by Bobby’s progeny, survived Covid, listened to and sang along with Frank and Ella, and laughed. A lot. Last February, the beautiful sisters moved into senior living in Parkland.
Above all, Phyllis relished time spent with family. All it took to bring a smile to her face were pictures, stories and video calls with her newest great grandchildren, Isabella and Axel. As Phyllis would say, in one of her infamous Phyllisisms, “What was, was!”
She is survived by children Richard (and Judy), John (and Laurie), Cathy (and Jim),Janet, and Nancy (and Jeffrey); grandchildren Alisa (and Andy), Bill (and Anita), Briana, Lily, Jack (and Hanna), Kane (and Lana) and Blaze; and great grandchildren Sophia, Aaron, Lydia, Alec, Isabella, and Axel. She is also survived by nieces Susan, Leslie, Wendy, and Lauri and their extended families and her amazing caretakers Paula, Marlene, Joan, and Stacy—all of whom lovingly supported and sustained “Fifi” in these last years.
The family will hold a private memorial service in April.

Departed: 02/27/2024 (Miami)
Obituary Preview: Cedric DeChandler Colbert, known affectionately as Ced to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2024, in Miami, Florida, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 24, 1968, in Tuscaloosa, Cedric was a beacon of light and warmth in the lives of many.
Cedric's early years in Tuscaloosa laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work, resilience, and a profound love for his community. He carried these values with him as he pursued his education, earning an HVAC Technician Certification at CBT Technology Institute in Miami, Florida. Cedric's professional journey was as varied as it was impressive; he enjoyed the culinary arts as a cook, honed his skills in construction, excelled in flooring, proved adept at air conditioning repair.
Ced was a man of many interests, but he loved cooking and celebrating holidays. Holidays and special occasions were particularly dear to him, as they provided precious moments to gather with family and friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime. His warm and open-hearted nature meant that he never met a stranger, embracing new friendships with ease and genuine interest.
Cedric's commitment to friendship was further evidenced by his involvement in "The Brotherhood," an organization that benefited greatly from his dedication and support. His brothers in the organization stood by him as a testament to the strength of the bonds he formed. His love for people extended to his four-legged friends as well; his affection for dogs and cats was a charming and well-known aspect of his generous spirit. He was also involved in voter registration events during elections, always encouraging people be represented and heard.
Though he cherished his roots in Tuscaloosa, Cedric found his true home in Miami. There, he immersed himself in the vibrant local culture and became a cherished member of the community. Cedric's infectious laughter, unwavering kindness, and willingness to lend a hand where needed ensured that he left a lasting impact on the heart of Miami.
Cedric's absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy is one of joy, compassion, and an unyielding zest for life. Cedric DeChandler Colbert's story is not one of sadness, but rather a celebration of a life lived to the fullest, touching the hearts of everyone he encountered.
As we bid farewell to Cedric, we are reminded of the beauty of a life well-lived and the power of a kind soul to make a world of difference. While we mourn his passing, we also take solace in the countless memories and the enduring love he left behind. Cedric's journey may have come to a close, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.

Sidney Morris - May 22, 1930 - June 14, 2022

Departed: 06/14/2022 (Miami)
Obituary Preview: Sid was drawn to people, an intelligent conversationalist and witty iconoclast who just delighted in being himself. A connoisseur of great authors, he was a freelance writer of 72 articles and short stories. With an encyclopedic knowledge of horse racing, ‘Clocker’ Sidney’s handicapping was often carried on WIOD. Born in Boston, he explored the seaside amusements of Revere before his family moved to Miami Beach. He attended the University of Florida where he joked and tap-danced into the hearts and minds of Gators as ‘C.I. Sid.’ He served in the U.S. Coast Guard on the USCGC Acushnet on which he participated in the twin T2 tanker rescue immortalized in the book and movie, ‘The Finest Hours.’ Sid returned to Miami Beach and became a firefighter, sliding perilously down the country’s tallest fire pole at Fire Station No. 1. Even more perilously, he regularly chauffeured the fire chief and mayor to the track, men who relied on his parimutuel guidance.
He walked into 14th Street’s iconic Club Deuce and met the love of his life, Diane. Sid packed up his fire boots, and they moved to her hometown of Detroit, where he was an instant hit within a circle of loving friends and family. He became a wonderful father of two and brought the new family back to Miami where he and Diane lived for the last 51 years. His faith was firm despite a journey that both embraced tradition and crossed boundaries. Born Jewish, he later became a member of Jefferson Avenue and Old Cutler Presbyterian churches. Sid was an account executive, selling office products and furniture where he was the inimitable headliner at office parties and endearingly known by his clients as ‘El Sid.’ He was also a realtor, part of the ‘Sidiane’ sales duo at firms where Diane had her license.
