JoAnn Bliss - December 13, 1957 - June 06, 2020

Departed: 06/06/2020 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: JoAnn Bliss was a strong oak tree. Her branches were built for others to swing from, her resilience was found in the deepest parts of her roots, her trunk stood for selflessness and her leaves were always meant for change.
JoAnn’s life as a sapling began in Cañon City, born December 13th, 1957, from mother Margaret Lowrey Bliss and father Robert Harvey Bliss. She uprooted herself to Greeley, Colorado to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Northern Colorado and then went on to achieve her CPA certification. However, she felt lost in the woods, and found direction in teaching. She returned to school at the University of Colorado to attain her Master’s Degree in Education. JoAnn then taught for 20 years in both the Cherry Creek and the Cañon City School Districts.
JoAnn’s favorite tree in her forest was her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Burger. They were planted closely and grew inseparably. JoAnn is most proud of how firmly grounded Elizabeth is, as she works in educational equity and social justice reform; having acquired a B.S. in Biology and Psychology from the University of  Denver and a Secondary Science Teaching Certification from Johns Hopkins University. JoAnn filled the air with love and admiration as Elizabeth extended herself to Teach for America and Peace Corps over the last five years.
JoAnn’s roots also span to her living relatives, brother Dr. Robert S. Bliss and brother Mark H. Bliss, his wife Sandy, and their three children Angela, Travis, and Jennifer. As we breathe with the trees around us -
May we listen as God asks for each of us to inhale humility and exhale humanity. And may we hear JoAnn’s gentle voice through her soft smile,
as she responds with ever- so-quick wit and patient kindness.
At JoAnn’s request, no services will be held.  Any special moments and uplifting stories to celebrate and honor JoAnn’s memory can be shared with her daughter at eaburger1gmail.com.  Services entrusted to Holt Family Historic Florence Funeral Home.

Born in Williamsburg, CO on August 17, 1928, Ralph was the son of Italian immigrants and the fifth of eight children. His work ethic was instilled at an early age when, at age seven, he began working in the coal mine with his dad; early mornings that began at 4 a.m. in the winter season. When his father died ten year later, Ralph was the eldest child at home and he met responsibility head-on to help support his family. He began his business with the purchase of a single axle dump truck in 1947, and would eventually grow Carestia Trucking into an 8-truck company, including a gravel pit, asphalt company, construction crew, and truck and equipment repair shop.
Ralph married Mary Nitchen in 1950, and they were blessed with two children, Ralph “Ralphie” and Karen. They lived in Rockvale, where Ralph was also a volunteer firefighter. They moved to Florence in 1979 and Mary passed away in January, 1980. Ralph married Darlene Gleiforst in December, 1982. He “kept on trucking” until he sold his business in 1995.
Ralph liked to be busy; he enjoyed tinkering in his shop, making or building things and restoring cars, including a 1923 Model T Roadster he bought on the spot when he saw it dead, dented and rusty, parked behind a couple of hay stacks. He also liked hunting and fishing. Ralph was well known in the community; he was a member of the Elks Club, and he and Darlene were crowned as Florence’s Pioneer Day King and Queen in 2009.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Darlene Carestia; his son, Ralph “Ralphie” (Betty)Carestia  and his daughter, Karen(Carey)  Horton; step-daughters, Karle (Leon) Murray, Patricia Gleiforst, Luanne(Kenny) Lonberger; four granddaughters, Kathryn Hazard, Kelly Franson, Mary Muniga and Kim Smith;  three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Tony Carestia, Antoinette Madone and Clara Giuliano. Sarah Michelle Madison - November 20, 1998 - May 31, 2019

Departed: 05/31/2019 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: Sarah Michelle Madison died peacefully at home surrounded by her parents on May 31, 2019 after a 12-month fight with cancer – Ewing’s Sarcoma.
Sarah was born on November 20, 1998, to Richard and Mary-Jo (Remo) Madison in Pueblo, Colorado.
Sarah graduated from Florence High School in May 2017.  She was diagnosed with autism at age 4 and labeled by society as “special needs” – she was anything but “special needs”.  After High School Sarah attended Starpoint which she enjoyed, making many new friends.  Sarah attended Tim Tebow’s Night To Shine with her friends from Starpoint in February 2018 - it was a magical evening that brought her joy.
Sarah enjoyed volunteering and attending Mass at Saint Benedict Catholic Church in Florence, Colorado.  For fifteen years she replaced burned out votive candles at the church, a ministry she performed until she was no longer able to. She helped staff and others at the church when asked and helped the sacristans clean up after Mass.  Sarah also enjoyed middle and high school choir, visiting homebound individuals, visiting nursing homes, camping, ATV rides, walks, going to the park, going shopping and to yard sales, watching movies, playing cards and board games, being around people, asking her signature questions, and talking on the telephone.  Sarah called and spoke to her grandparents every day.
Sarah remained strong and fought a courageous fight during the 12 months of her illness.  Cancer may have devastated her body but it never touched or destroyed her soul.  For the past 20 years Sarah was a true gift to her family, friends, and all that knew her.  She did not understand or care about the nonsense of this world.  All she ever wanted was to be around people asking her signature questions about what you liked and what you were going to do.  Sarah’s kind, caring, gentle, loving soul shined to the moment she breathed her last breath.  Sarah was an inspiration and touched many lives; she will continue to inspire those who knew her.
She is survived by her parents, Richard and Mary-Jo; grandparents, Skip and Ruth Berryann, James and Barbara Madison; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charlie and Helen Remo.

Departed: 04/28/2019 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: Charles “Chow” Picco was born in late August, 1933 to John and Minnie Picco. He was the second youngest of six children. He grew up in Rockvale and attended Florence High School (graduating Class of 1952). After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas as part of the Allied Occupational Forces following World War II. He moved back to Fremont County and began teaching in Penrose as an English teacher. There, he met and married his second wife and had a son, Michael, in late 1968.
Although he started his career in the classroom, Chow's business background helped him to become Principal for the junior high school in Florence. He spent over thirty years in the position, and would often remark that he had taught three generations of Fremont County residents during his tenure.
Chow retired from the position in the late 1990s, and spent his retirement traveling (to Italy and to Mexico most notably). He was a fervent Bronco and Rockies fan and never missed a game. In his final years, he found great comfort and joy in the company of his grandchildren, the fellowship he found at Shepherd of the Hills, and in his many outings with his companion, Velma Jean.
