Marian Jane (Challoner) Syltebo - February 18, 1924 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Issaquah)
Obituary Preview: Marian Jane Challoner was born on February 18, 1924 in Fargo, North Dakota and she passed away on April 27, 2024 in Bellevue, Washington, just a couple of months after celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends. Marian was the second of three children born to Olivia Ann Challoner (nee Ladner) and Frederick John Challoner.
Marian studied Home Economics at the North Dakota Agricultural College in her hometown of Fargo. She focused on becoming a clinical dietician, working hard to complete four years of college in only three years because of the War. When she finished her three years of schooling, she was required to do a one-year internship before she was a fully licensed dietician. The only place Marian wanted to do that internship was Seattle because some of her fondest memories were the times she spent weeks with her uncle’s family in Edmonds, Washington during the Depression. At the end of her internship in Seattle, she worked in a few different hospitals in Minnesota and North Dakota before deciding to return to Seattle.
While working at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, Marian was introduced by mutual friends to Bjarne Syltebo, an Engineering student at the University of Washington. They began dating in July of 1948 and they married in April of 1949. Over the next few years, they had two sons, Mark and Tom, and a daughter, Beth, and moved to a house in downtown Bellevue. They lived there only about a year when Bjarne was sent by Boeing to work in Nottingham, England for nineteen months, so the family of five packed up and moved. They returned to their Bellevue home in 1958 and the family grew to seven with the birth of two more sons, Jon and Scott.
In 1966, while still raising these five children, Marian and her friend decided to open a catering business specializing in weddings and office parties. She ran that business for nearly twenty years. Marian was also an avid community volunteer, doing PTA work at her children’s schools and volunteering for the Overlake Service League and the Overlake Hospital Auxiliary.
Marian was preceded in death by her first-born son Mark in 1997 (ALS) and by her husband Bjarne in 2011. She is survived by four children: Tom Syltebo (Judy Fisher), Beth Friesner, Jon Syltebo, and Scott Syltebo (Loni) and by Mark’s widow, Danna. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was the grand matriarch of this large family and will be greatly missed.
A funeral mass for Marian will be held on Saturday, May 11 at 11 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church located at 9460 NE 14th St, Clyde Hill, Washington.
Donations in memory of Marian Syltebo can be sent to either Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to the ALS Association.

John Livingston Mangan - September 12, 1948 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Issaquah)
Obituary Preview: John Livingston Mangan
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sondra, children Kevin Mangan and Allison D’Ambrosio, Preeti Maroju and Elvis Forrest who knew him as “Grampa”, and brother Scott (Susan) of Brewster, MA, his niece, nephews and many cousins.
John was born in Salem, Massachusetts on September 12, 1948, to John Leo Mangan and Mildred Livingston Mangan. After living in Schenectady when very young, his family moved to Webster Groves, Missouri where John attended kindergarten and first grade. John has fond memories of watching the trains at the nearby station which may have sparked his lifelong fascination with railroads, both real and model. John was active in several Lionel Train clubs for many years. John enjoyed summer camp at YMCA Camp Chingachgook, first as camper, then joining the staff as a counselor. He lived in Schenectady through tenth grade when his dad left GE for a job at Boeing in Seattle. John spent his junior and senior years at Mercer Island High School—working at Seattle YMCA Camp Orkila during the summer between. The family moved back to Niskayuna, NY in 1966 when John was off to Cornell University on an ROTC scholarship. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta, Beta Omicron chapter. He loved working at WVBR which started his radio career.
Upon graduation from Cornell in 1970, John was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy. He attended Communications Officer School in 1970 and then served as Officer of the Deck and OPS Officer. From 1971-74, he served on the USS Hancock CVA19 and the USS Pyro AE24 as a communication officer and has been active in crew reunions over the years. He remained active as a reserve officer, retiring from the service in 1993 as a Commander.
John moved to Tacoma in 1979 to work at radio stations KTAC/KBRD where he was program manager of KBRD. For almost 30 years, he was the instructor and station manager at the very successful radio broadcasting program at Clover Park Technical College. The program included operating a typical campus radio station. John transformed the program—his students got a real commercial radio experience in their two-year education. He grew I91FM to have a large market share in the region. It became so prominent in introducing new artists, it was the Pacific Northwest station courted by the record industry. He also coached and mentored former students and colleagues in their broadcasting careers.
In 1984, John completed his master’s degree at City University.
Though John’s first car was a 1968 Cutlass in 1970 he purchased a Triumph GT6+ MK2 which is still in the garage. This started his love of “little British cars.” In 1980, he added a Triumph TR7 which was a daily driver for a decade and then became the vacation car of choice. Along with Kevin, John spent his summer vacations driving to Lionel Train conventions all over the US in the 1990s. Later, Sondra joined John on many trips to California where lunching at Nepenthe on Big Sur and visiting small coastal towns were favorite activities. John joined the Tyee Triumph Club in 1982 and enjoyed many trips around the west with club members. Later a 2017 red Fiat 124 Spider convertible was added to the fleet. In 2018 John and Sondra drove to Orlando, FL for the Fiat Freakout convention where the car placed first in its division. Following the convention, the trip continued to Key West, Florida before returning home through Arkansas which was the 50th state John had visited.
In 2019, John and Sondra took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Couples Sans Souci resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It was so wonderful, they went another three times, only skipping when the pandemic closed the resort.
In 2020 John was diagnosed with Stage IV prostate cancer which was kept in check for several years by clinical trial medicines at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Earlier this year, other complications compromised his health, and treatment had to be suspended. John died at Franciscan Hospice House on Saturday, April 20, 2024. He will be missed by family and friends who knew him as a brilliant man of many interests, with a generous heart, a tremendous sense of humor, and quick wit.
John’s military funeral service will be Monday, May 6 at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA. A reception following the service will be held at Allison’s home in Tacoma.

Laurel Preston - July 13, 1957 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Issaquah)
Obituary Preview: Laurel Preston of Medina, Washington, passed away at home on April 19, 2024 at the age of 66 after a three-year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 43 and a half years, Stephen; her three children: Jason (Monica), Hillary (Reed), and Conrad (Destinee); and her three grandchildren: Julian, Lina, and Astrid.
Laurel was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to parents William and Ethel Bates.
Her kin remember her as the emotional director of the family, modeling patience, elegance, and a profound and generous love and attention for all who were lucky enough to know her. Her colleagues, as well, remember her as consistently principled, uncommonly insightful, unfailingly kind, and above all — thoughtful. She had a knack for giving the perfect gift, and the gift of knowing exactly the right thing to say.
Laurel was an avid reader who valued going outside her comfort zone to find new and interesting material; her taste ran from mystery to poetry and everywhere in between. She had an eye for art and a bold and eclectic style that showed up in her home and in her life.
She cared deeply about her community and gave her time and talents to several organizations. She served on the Bellevue Schools Foundation board of trustees, where she was elected president from 2008-2009; the PTAs for Stevenson Elementary and Odle Middle School; and the Medina Planning Commission, which she chaired from January 2020 to December 2022.
Laurel exhibited courage, leadership, curiosity, and quiet strength throughout her life. When she went after something, she was inexorable. She was among the first women to study at Dartmouth, graduating in the Class of 1978 — the third class after the college admitted women. As part of the Dartmouth College study abroad program, she spent the summer of 1975 in Leningrad and a winter term in Vienna studying music.
Laurel’s passion for education guided much of her life and led her to further degrees: a masters in Applied Mathematics from Rice University in 1983 and a Masters followed by a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Washington in 2014.

Joan Marie Church Wothe Schiesser - January 03, 1937 - April 18, 2024

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Issaquah)
Obituary Preview: Joan Marie Church Wothe Schiesser left this world peacefully on April 18, 2024 in Fall City, Washington. Joan Church was born on January 3, 1937 in Missoula, Montana and moved to North Bend with her parents, Dwight and Millie Longenecker, when she was in the sixth grade. There, she was big sister and mother hen to two younger sisters and a younger brother.
After graduating from Mt. Si High School in 1955, she took a job in the college library at the UW and a year later went to work at Boeing Employment Office in downtown Seattle. Joan married her high school sweetheart, Donald E. Wothe, and they had 5 children. She was often out with a row of little blonde children, keeping them safe and proper, through their younger years. For a decade, they lived in Fall City near their best friends, David and Alice Schiesser. During these years, their friends group helped build each other’s houses, worked and played together.
In 1971, the Wothe family moved to Wenatchee, Washington to take advantage of the growing construction opportunities in that area. The family thrived, as Jo helped manage apple, pear, cherry and peach orchards. It was a wonderful place to raise a family. They enjoyed many weekends exploring the state in a motorhome that cozily slept all seven.
Disaster struck in 1978, when Don was coming home with truckload of lumber. There was an accident and Don was killed. Joan tended to the family, raising her 5 kids as well as continuing to work at the Wenatchee Valley Clinic in the Cardiology Department. The next year, tragedy struck again, when her dearest friend since jr. high, Alice, died from medical complications of surgery. This left her husband, David, widowed with 3 young children.
The two close friends helped each other through the loss of their spouses, their friendship growing into love as they shared time on motorcycle and fishing trips with their Fall City friends and family. Joan married David A. Schiesser on June 23, 1984 in Fall City WA and blended their families of 5 plus 3 into 8 children, 4 girls and 4 boys. The family now lived in Fall City. Together, they owned and managed the Fall City Hardware Store.
Jo and Dave traveled the Western States and Canada on a Goldwing motorcycle with friends. The couples saw every nook and cranny there was to see. Then they traded the motorcycle adventures for boating. The summers were filled with taking their boat out on Lake Washington and at times cruising to Canada to fish. Jo enjoyed the times on the boat. It was always overflowing with fishing gear, fun water toys and lots of kids. She cherished the chaos of a large family. They then traded the boat for dry land, and built an off the grid cabin in the Teanaway Valley to entertain the growing family year round.
Retiring in 1996 gave Joan and David time to spend the winters in Yuma, AZ along with traveling to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio and Alaska to visit the kids and growing numbers of grandchildren as the family spread across the country.
In 1999, while traveling around the US, Jo suffered a cranial aneurysm which left her with some memory challenges. It was a slight set back, but Jo dove back to the family’s active life. She loved to help with the gardening, at times caught the most fish and enjoyed watching the grandkids play sports. They traded the cabin for a fifth wheel RV, spending many seasons wintering in Arizona, and a camper used to go fishing and exploring with friends and family in Canada during the summers. They continued to travel for the next 24 years to Ohio, California, Minnesota, Alaska, Arizona, and many other states. Jo and Dave agreed that if you’re going to do it, do it right! And she always did.
Jo was surrounded and uplifted by her family for the last days of her life. She is preceded in death by her parents, Amelia and Dwight Longenecker, and by her first husband Donald Edward Wothe. Marlene Patricia Kristensen - September 01, 1932 - April 01, 2024

Departed: 04/01/2024 (Issaquah)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Marlene Patricia Kristensen
Marlene was born in Baudette, Minnesota on September 1, 1932 to Frances E. Wilson and Glenn E. Munson. She was the second youngest of their five children. The family lived on a dairy, cattle, and alfalfa farm, and managed a small resort on the Rainy River. The children helped with the farm and were encouraged to pursue academic excellence. Marlene was an avid reader of advanced literature at a very young age. Her Christmas present one year was a stack of books that exceeded her height. At about the age of 10, Marlene read the 314 page “Complete Book of Marvels” by Richard Halliburton detailing his global travels and the wonders of nature. Marlene then declared her intent to see the world.
Marlene and Robert (Bob) Kristensen fell deeply in love during high school. Marlene had always wanted to be a teacher and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota while Bob completed 4 years of service in the Air Force in Fairbanks, Alaska. Marlene graduated Magna Cum Lauda in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Sociopsychology, and Education. She taught junior high English for a year until she married Bob on June 5, 1955. They moved to Seattle immediately after the wedding, settled in Lynnwood, Washington in 1956 and joined Trinity Lutheran Church. The church was a great source of community and support to Marlene, and she was deeply involved in many of its ministries over the past 67 years.
Marlene and Bob have two daughters, Debbie and Mary. Family life was filled with adventure – weekend hikes and drives, camping trips, church activities, and visits to museums. Marlene was the organizer and volunteered at their schools, was a Camp Fire Leader and District President, and Sunday School teacher. Despite the limited family budget, Marlene and Bob somehow ensured that the girls had dance, swimming, horse-back riding, and music lessons and were able to attend college when the time came.
When the girls went off to college, Marlene completed her Washington State Certificate for teaching and taught preschool for many years. She received numerous accolades from parents, was repeatedly honored as Teacher of the Year, and developed lifelong friendships with many of the children she taught and their families. Marlene and Bob also joyfully began their world travels. They covered every continent and were especially fond of opportunities to see wildlife in Africa and Antarctica. They also spent precious time with their grandchildren.
When Bob died of cancer in 2010, Marlene was devastated but followed his wishes to live her life to the fullest with great resolve. She took trips, hiked, enrolled in literature classes, tended to her large garden, and attended plays and concerts with her many friends. She was always on the move and approached her own cancer diagnosis and treatments with her typical strong resolve, positive attitude, and sense of humor.
Marlene was an adventurer, loving teacher, life-long learner, and a woman of deep faith. She leaves behind her daughters Debra Kristensen and Mary Quinlan; sons-in-law Kurt Anderson and Mark Quinlan; grandchildren Kiah, Stephanie, Johannah, Sarah, and Jacob; and great grandchildren Kiarah, Aaron, Destinee, Kindyl, Charlie, and Thomas. She will be greatly missed, but we know that God holds her in His care for all eternity.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Marlene on May 11, 2024 at 1 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church (6215 196th St SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036).
For those who wish to offer a memorial gift in Marlene’s name, the family suggests contributions to Music Ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church or the National Park Foundation at https://give.nationalparks.org.
