Loretta Hopely - December 22, 1930 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Loretta (Bauer) Hopely passed away with family by her side, on May 1, 2024 at age 93.  Loretta grew up as the "Bakers Daughter" as her parents William & Marie (Dammel) Bauer came from Germany and opened Bauer's Pastry Shop in North Philadelphia; then in 1960 moved the business to Bustleton Avenue in Far Northeast Philadelphia.  Bauer's Bakery was known far and wide for their incredible cakes and pastries baked daily by her Dad and two brothers, Fred and Willy Bauer.  Hard work doesn't begin to tell the story as baking started at 2am and continued all day long.  Our mom was the chief sales associate in the front of the store, organizing and waiting on customers plus managing the books. Mom shared her work ethic with her children at an early age as we participated by packing cookies at holiday time, wrapping their famous German stollen, cleaning cases and pans, and just being there for the little jobs we were assigned to.  The bakery closed after over 50 years of success but the memories still live on with customers continuing to share their stories of waiting in line to get their famous butter cake, or going every year to get their birthday cake.  Mom was always SO proud when she would meet someone who knew "the bakery" which happened all the time and most recently 2 weeks ago. We are all so blessed to have incredible memories of our grandparents and our mom coming home from work with this delicious aroma of baked goods!  Donut Day was her favorite holiday! Mom married her man Norman J. Hopely, Sr. in 1953 and what an adventure it was!  They roller skated, ice skated, danced, attended baseball and football games, fished and traveled together and enjoyed their family immensely.  We were their pride and joy! Mom loved to line dance, play pinochle and slot machines, get her hair done weekly, have breakfast at diners and help her children in any way she could.  Not unusual to have her visit to clean your windows, care for your kids, help you pack up your house or whatever you needed her to do. Mom was always the best cleanup companion after a large family dinner.  She was an immaculate housekeeper with the "no clutter" rule!  Mom was a devoted Engelbert Humperdinck fan!  She attended over 30 of his shows singing all the words to his songs.  Our last show was December 2023 and she still managed to get up to the stage and shake his hand at the end of the show.  Her smile was priceless!
After dad passed in 2012, mom stayed in her home still driving until age 90 when she started having some memory and cognitive issues.  Her children swooped in with shared custody in our homes until she passed away.  As difficult as it was to watch her decline we were happy to have the opportunity to "give back" some of the love and care we received throughout our lives.  Mom's greatest joy was her children, and she wanted nothing more than to be with them in her final years.  She loved baseball and football and now had an opportunity to go the her Great Grandchildren's games and get to know about basketball too.  She was known as "OMA" to her 7 great grandchildren who adored her. Everyone who came in contact with our Mom would say the same thing; "she's great to talk to", "she's so kind and generous", "what a great smile and twinkle in her eye", "wonderful beautiful lady", "great sense of humor", "I really really like your mom"; "such a lovely woman";" I have such fond memories of being with your mom".  Mom loved to meet people both young and old and share stories. Her advice to living a long and happy life is "A donut a day"!
Loretta is survived by her three children, Phyllis Struzinski (Alan), Carol Hopely Russo (Robert), and Norman Hopely, Jr. (Denise).  Her four grandchildren, Steven Struzinski (Meghan), Season Apple (Michael), Lindsay Carlisle (Scott) and Matthew Struzinski (Amy).  Her seven great grandchildren, Brennan, Griffin, James, Peyton, Scotty, Emma and Sammy.  Also survived by brother-in-law Robert Hopely, Sr. and many nieces and nephews and friends who adored her.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Viewing Monday, May 6, 2024, from 10 am to 11:30 am at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home, 9529 Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19115. Funeral Service at 11:30 am. Interment to follow at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler, PA.

Dr. Michael (Mykhailo) Bilyk, PhD - Unknown - April 30, 2024

Departed: 04/30/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Mykhailo Bilyk PhD, a resident of Langhorne, PA, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024. He was 98 years old.
Born in Svystilnyky, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine, he was the son of the late Stepan and Evdokia (Lytwyn) Bilyk and had three brothers – Alexander, Bohdan (who died in infancy), and Myron.  At a young age, Mykhailo was separated from his family during WWII in Europe.  He never saw his father or younger brother Myron again.
In 1951, he was awarded a scholarship to the University of Madrid in Spain, where he obtained a doctorate in economics.  He immigrated to the United States in 1958 and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, reuniting with his mother and older brother Alexander, who immigrated several years prior.  Unfortunately, his father died shortly before his arrival.
He met his beloved wife, Oksana Struk, on the steps of their church in Philadelphia.  They married in 1961 and raised three children - Roman, Irena, and Marta.  It was very important to them that their children be raised as proud, patriotic Ukrainians.  They instilled in them a strong Ukrainian heritage, teaching them to speak their native language, appreciate their culture and traditions, and enriched their lives by encouraging their active participation in the Ukrainian community.
Tragically, in 1988, his wife Oksana suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.  This was an immeasurable loss that would affect him and his children for the rest of their lives.
Mykhailo spoke several languages fluently and started his career working as a language instructor for Berlitz School of Languages in Philadelphia, PA.  Until 1976, he coordinated and supervised multiple branches of Berlitz schools in Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr, and Abington.  Subsequently, he continued working for Berlitz Financial Corporation in Princeton, New Jersey, as a Manager of Administrative Services. In 1999 (at the age of 73), he retired after 41 years of service.
He was an active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center, and other Ukrainian organizations.  For many years, he taught Ukrainian Culture at the Saturday school “Ridna Shkola”.  He tried to instill in his students the same love and appreciation he had for our rich heritage.  Music and singing were also an important part of Mykhailo’s life, and it brought him great joy to be a long-time original member of the Ukrainian male chorus “Prometheus”.  He was a vibrant man with a great sense of humor, who loved animals, Hershey Kisses, and Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Flyers.
Mykhailo is survived by his children Irena, Marta, and Roman.  As the last remaining patriarch of the Bilyk family, he will be missed by the entire extended Bilyk/Shatynski family and his relatives in Ukraine.

Departed: 04/18/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Ireney Isajiw peacefully passed away in his sleep on April 18, 2024.
He was born in Lviv, Ukraine on September 3, 1937. He was the son of Peter and Jaroslawa (nee Konrad) Isajiw. During World War II, his family fled Lviv and followed escape routes through Eastern and Central Europe until they found refuge in a displaced persons camp and lived near Aufkirch, Germany. Ireney, along with his parents and 3 siblings, Olya, Bakho and Yurko, immigrated to the United States in 1949 and settled in Philadelphia.
Ireney attended Northeast Catholic High School, graduating in 1955. He attended and graduated from LaSalle College, receiving a B.A. in 1959. Afterwards, he completed an M.A. at Villanova University. Ireney was a very enthusiastic and dedicated member of the Ukrainian Scouting Organization Plast. During his many years of commitment to this organization and its principles, Ireney forged long-lasting friendships. He enjoyed expeditions and adventures which were the basis of a nearly endless catalog of stories that he frequently shared. His involvement included an array of leadership positions at Plast camps and leadership training programs. Ireney also enjoyed playing various sports with his brothers and friends in parks and fields throughout Philadelphia. It was at one of these sports facilities – a tennis court in Hunting Park, where he met Oksana Subtelny, who eventually became his wife of nearly 58 years. They married July 9th, 1966 and subsequently had three children - Larissa, Tamara and Roman.
Ireney pursued an extraordinarily long career as a professional educator. In this capacity, he was a memorable presence in Philadelphia's Ukrainian community as a teacher in Ridna Shkola (one of the predecessor programs to the Ukrainian Heritage School, now a program of the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center in Jenkintown). He held positions as both a teacher and an administrator at a variety of schools in the Philadelphia area, as well as New Jersey. His educational career eventually prompted a move to Newton, NJ in the late months of 1976, where he and Oksana raised their children and lived until his passing. Ireney was also a sports enthusiast who was active as an organizer and promoter of sports and athletics in the Ukrainian community, committing his time to USCAK, the Ukrainian Sports Federation of US and Canada. He also spent many Sundays and Monday nights honing his craft as an analyst of American football, generously sharing his commentary with family members.
Ireney will be mourned and missed by his wife, Oksana, his children Larissa with husband, Peter Kebuz, Tamara with husband William Davis and Roman with wife Bridget (nee Mathieson). His grandchildren, Luke and Ariana Isayiw, along with Adrian and Alexander Kebuz, will miss his colorful tales and off-beat jokes. Ireney was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Wsevolod Isajiw and his brother-in-law, Dr. Orest Subtelny. His passing is deeply mourned by his sister, Olha Hayduk and his brother Dr. George Isajiw with wife Patricia. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as cousins, throughout the US and Canada, as well as extended family in Lviv, Ukraine.

Patricia C. Saverino - Unknown - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Patricia (Brown) Saverino passed away suddenly at the age of 82 years old on Thursday, April 11 surrounded by her family.
Patricia was born in New York to Claire and Thomas Brown who claim that she only ever had “one bad year” in which she misbehaved while growing up. She met Vincent Saverino, a young boy with good hair, in grade school who carried a briefcase and offered to carry her schoolbooks as well. The experiences and friendships created in Parkchester stayed with her always.
Patricia and Vincent married on September 15, 1962. As Vincent followed his dream of entering the priesthood, Patricia stayed at home to care for their growing family.  Once Vincent got his own parish, St. Michael’s in Philadelphia, Patricia began to pursue her career in nursing following in the tradition of her mother and aunt and become a nurse.
She graduated from Einstein Hospital School of Nursing, earned her BSN from LaSalle University, her Master’s degree from Penn State University and her Nurse Practitioner certificate from Georgetown University.  Patricia loved nursing and the NICU was the place that she was meant to be.  A highlight of her career was her time at Rolling Hill Hospital and the many friends that she made there held a very special place in her heart.
She found fellowship at St. Michael Russian Orthodox Church, and there she created traditions and fostered friendships that she valued greatly.
If she had not become a nurse, Patricia could have had a career in event planning. Significant anniversaries, every family birthday, time away in Maine, Sunday after church, get-togethers with former colleagues, boat tours that her husband and brother-in-law decried but ended up reminiscing about for years: she was always planning get-togethers.
Despite being officially retired, Pat was available and on call for everyone to review medical conditions and treatment options. She was a proud mother and grandmother, and was always up for celebrating the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband and daughter Claire and son-in-law Ian.  She is survived by her children: Anastasia Saverino, Barbara Saverino, Kathleen (Lou) Belmonte, Mary (Art Dupras) Saverino, and Tatiana Saverino.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Alexandra, Benjamin, Sam, Noah, Travis, Max, Anthony, and Nikos.

Harry J. Guinan - Unknown - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Harry J. Guinan of Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 years on April 4, 2024.
A devoted husband of just shy of 64 years to Nancy (O’Neill) Guinan (predeceased); a loving father to daughters Kathy Austin (Ed), Nancy Spencer (Bob) and sons Kelly (Margie) & Jack.  Cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren; Laura, Ashley, Casey Lynn, Samantha (predeceased), Katie, Bridgette, and Kelly, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Harry was born in the Kensington section of Philadelphia, the second eldest child of Joseph A. and Anna (Mautz) Guinan.  Harry attended Visitation Grade School and is the proudest of North Catholic alums, class of 1949.  Harry served in the US Army in the early 1950’s. Harry and Nancy were high school sweethearts who loved to dance; jitterbug being their specialty!  A US Army Korean War Era veteran, Harry and Nancy remained a couple throughout his years of service.  After being Honorably Discharged, he returned to Philadelphia where he and Nancy eventually married in 1955.  Married for almost 64 years, their love and devotion to each other was an inspiration to all.  They had a large group of friends with whom they socialized both at home and down the seashore.  Their love for music and dancing never left them, as they could be seen dancing in their kitchen, at socials, or at the many, many weddings they attended.  Nancy was the love of Harry’s life!
Harry spent most of his working years as a truck driver, a proud Teamster!  He loved driving, and finally later in life, when he was strictly a “neighborhood-only driver,” Harry finally turned over his car keys.  Even then, he kept his car with the tiny boxing gloves hanging from the rear-view mirror parked outside his Paul’s Run apartment, so he could look out his window and see it every day. An adored Pop-Pop to seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren, Harry rarely missed a baseball, softball, rugby, soccer, or football game, regardless of the weather!   As for the kid’s birthdays, Harry was a fixture…as much to enjoy the celebration, but to also enjoy the cake and ice cream!  Harry never met a dessert he did not like!  And when it came to the beach or a swimming pool, Harry was the first one in the water with the kids and the last one out!  Look up grandfather in the dictionary, and you will see a picture of Harry Guinan! Harry and Nancy, along with brother Joe Guinan II and sister-in-law Lois (both predeceased), sister Nancy Hipp (predeceased) and brother-in-law Jack, and sister Dolores Turner and brother-in-law Jack, known as the “Crazy 8’s”, were the best of friends, and shared countless good times together since the 1950’s!  Lovers of the South Jersey shore, “On The Way To Cape May” could have been written for them! As for Harry’s extended family…all the Hipp, Turner, Guinan, and O’Neill nieces and nephews, favorite Uncle Harry was beloved and will always be remembered for his smiles and jokes! Harry was always there with a smile and a joke, an unconditional helping hand, a listening ear, and a calm manner for both family and friends.  His easy demeanor could transform worry into comfort; fears into strengths; and tears into smiles. A selfless, generous man, Harry will be missed!
Strong in his Catholic faith, we take comfort in knowing that Harry is up in heaven reunited again with Nancy and the rest of his family including beloved granddaughter Samantha Spencer.  From this day forward in heaven, there will be a little more dancing, a little more humming, a little more whistling, and a LOT MORE LAUGHTER!  We will forever hold Harry close in our hearts.
We invite you to join us to celebrate Harry’s life Monday, April 22, 2024 at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church at 10 AM for a visitation.  His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM.  Committal Prayers, preceded by Military Honors, will be held at 1 PM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery.

Departed: 03/29/2024 (Philadelphia)
Obituary Preview: Petro 'Pete' Kit, a long time resident of Philadelphia, died Friday, March 29, 2024.  He was 70.  Born in Germany, Pete was the son of the late Dmytro and Kataryna (Kubrak) Kit.
He and his parents came to America through the Port of Ellis Island when he was two years old and they became  residents of Philadelphia.  He is survived by his daughter Caroline, his longtime partner Victoria Nelson and was predeceased by his son Peter Kit.
Pete grew up as an only child, but his father and his Aunt Maria were very close siblings.  Almost every weekend, Pete's mother, father, and aunt would gather to cook and enjoy each other's company.  His aunt Maria had three wonderful children: Sophie, Olga, and James.  Even though they were cousins, their bond was akin to that of siblings. And the children of James, Olga, and Sophie were very close to Pete.  Although Pete was their second cousin, the children addressed him as Uncle Pete.  Pete played a significant role as Godfather to Stefania Warwick, the daughter of Pete's cousin Teresa and her husband Jimmy.
Pete had a passion for both fishing and hunting.  Whenever he had the chance, he loved riding his Harley.  Pete was a member of The American Legion Riders Post 263.  He was also one of the founding charter members of The Post 283 Riders.
Relatives and friends are invited to Pete's viewing on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at 9:30 AM at the Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home.   Requiem Services will be at 11 AM.  Interment will be private.
"We are all devastated by Pete’s loss and were not prepared for the cost of a funeral service.  We want to give Pete the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes.  So we ask that, in lieu of flowers, that you consider assisting us; you can do so by sending what you can afford directly to Fletcher-Nasevich Funeral Home (payable to the funeral home) to help us offset the cost of Pete's funeral".
