Departed: 03/04/2024 (Fletcher)
Obituary Preview: Alphonso Lydell Chapman was born to Johnnie and Rose Skipper Chapman on August 5th, 1959, in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was the third born son of four boys. He grew up in Lawton with his mother and step-father, Madison Cunningham, and his brothers, Johnnie, Billy and Bennie. He graduated from MacArthur High School in the Class of 1977. He married Kimberly Taylor on November 7th, 1992, with whom he celebrated 31 years and 4 months of marriage. Together, they have five children: Taylor, Ashley, Matthew, Madison, and Jonathan.
Alphonso received his Bachelor of Arts in Art Education and Military Science in 1981, and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant, US Army, through Cameron university’s ROTC program. He served honorably for 24 years in the US Army Reserves, being activated three times for Desert Storm and Desert Shield and retiring in 2006 as Captain.
Because Alphonso had a heart for young people, he began working for Comanche County Regional Juvenile Detention Center, later promoting over to the Comanche County Juvenile Bureau as a probation officer, serving a combined total of 18 years in the juvenile system. In 1999, Alphonso became a cadre for the National Guard Mentorship Program, assisting with counseling high-risk youths in the Lawton-Ft. Sill area for a number of years.
While in college, Alphonso developed a life-long love for martial arts. In 1991, he began many years of instructing karate, first for the Lawton YMCA, and later for Gold’s Gym, where he taught ages 5 through adult. He was a second-degree black belt in Kyokushin Kaikan karate, becoming extremely skilled with his weapon of choice, nun-chucks.
From an early age, Alphonso had a love for art - specifically pencil and pen drawings. As his skill improved, he branched out into other mediums, such as charcoal, watercolor, and sculptures. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Army Reserves, his love for art and young people prompted him to receive his Oklahoma Teacher’s Certification in 2005 and was hired immediately at MacArthur Highschool. There, he served faithfully as an art teacher until his retirement on January 30th, 2024. He was also a certified driver’s education instructor, as well as teaching courses in computer science and pottery.
Alphonso had a smile and laugh that endeared him to all who knew him. He was known for his fantastic sense of humor, joyful disposition, and empathy for others. Though he could be described as quiet, he was a man of deep thought and insight. He was truly an artist through-and-through. Whether he was looking at objects or people, he had an eye for seeing the potential beauty in everything. Alphonso lived his life fully believing that God created all mankind with a unique purpose in life. He exhibited his faith through devotions with his family and seized teaching moments about God with his six, grandchildren. He was not ashamed to share his faith with others and found great joy in seeing family, friends, and acquaintances come to faith through our Messiah. Even in his last days on Earth, Alphonso spent his time reading Scriptures from the Bible, listening to sermons and worshipful music, and praying for his family to have peace and comfort. He was known by many names: Alphonso, Al, Fonz, Dad, Padre, Dell, Papa C, Chap, Mr. Chapman. He was a soldier, probation officer, mentor, teacher, artist, diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, chicken farmer, and Bruce Lee enthusiast. He was a dear friend, caring brother and son, faithful husband, and an amazing dad and grandpa. Each label given represented a different role he played in the lives of so many. The impact he made in this world was magnificent and befitting the Heavenly greeting of “Well-done, good and faithful servant. You have run your race well.”
Alphonso passed into Eternity on March 4th, 2024, at home. He was surrounded by his wife, children, and mother-in-law, Betty Taylor. Though the hole he leaves in many lives is quite painful, Alphonso was ready to meet our Heavenly Father. He was 64 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, a brother, Lenny Cunningham, father-in-law, and two grandchildren (both prenatal). He was soon joined in death on March 5th by his newborn grandson Everett Abel Chapman.
He leaves behind his wife, Kimberly Chapman, of the home; his children: Taylor and Samantha Chapman; Ashley Chapman, Matthew Chapman, Madison Chapman, and Jonathan Chapman; three brothers: Johnnie Chapman, Billy Chapman, and Bennie Cunningham; brothers in law and sisters in law: Kent and Cristy Taylor; and Patrice and Michael Dolch; mother-in-law, Betty Taylor; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and six grandchildren: Hailey, Lainey, Emmett, Easton, Emberly, and Cooper.
A private family graveside service with military honors was held on March 8th at the Fort Sill National Cemetery.
A public celebration of life/memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2024, at First Baptist East at 3302 SE Lee Blvd, Lawton, OK 73501.
