Timothy "Tim" J. Salm - July 25, 1966 - February 26, 2024

Departed: 02/26/2024 (Rockford)
Obituary Preview: Timothy John Salm left this earthly plane on 2/26/24 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He has joined his four-legged soulmate, Huey, where they are continuing on many more new and exciting adventures.
He will be lovingly remembered by his mother Jeanne Salm; his siblings Michael Salm (Claudia Cooper-Salm), Martha Runyan (Mike), Peter Salm (Mary Jo Guglielmi), Mary Pat Pike (John), Andrew Salm (Pamela), Colette Salm-Schmid (Derek ), Maggie Moore (Mike), and his lifelong loving companion Joan Schwarzbach; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues.
Predeceased by his father Vincent (Mike) A. Salm, and both paternal and maternal grandparents.
Tim always marched to the beat of a different drummer. In fact, he owned that drum and he was the one beating on it. He had an insatiable appetite to learn. He was continuously expanding his knowledge and refining his skillsets and talents; while always willing to generously share these with any and all. To say he had a varied academic and vocational career is an understatement. He had a bachelor’s degree, followed by multiple Master’s degrees and professional certifications. Work assignments have included but not limited to Microsoft, dolphin research center, a chiropractic college, a major medical institution, and several colleges and universities; with locations from the east coast to the west coast and from Bemidji, MN to the Florida Keys; with countless places in between.
He will always have a special place in his heart for his only younger sibling, “Margo” whole stole the title of baby in the family; but in reality, took over that burden for him.
He will be best remembered for his generous spirit, his loving smile, and his zest for life. His new journey is just beginning; and he will be happy to tell us all about it, once we arrive.
A private family service will be held: with a celebration to honor Tim’s life to be held at a later date.

George H. Hertzner IV - December 24, 1967 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Rockford)
Obituary Preview: George Henry Hertzner IV was born December 24, 1967, and after a long battle with mental illness left us in life on February 21, 2024. George is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dianne (Johnston) Hertzner of Monroe, WI; his two children Lynnzee (Seth) Flamang of Hayward, WI and Logan (Julia) Hertzner of Monroe, WI; his two beautiful grandsons Braxton and Beckett; his mother Barb Hertzner of Rockford, IL; siblings Barb Green of Rockford, IL, Loren Hertzner of Phoenix, AZ, Mark Hertzner of Rockford, IL, Kathy Jo of Rockford, IL; along with countless loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. George was preceded in death by his father, George Hertzner III, brother-in-law Gary Smith and his best friend Bobby Swanson.
George had the super power to engage any and everyone in conversation. Within seconds, George would be able to enter your world with a powerful, positive and genuine warm-hearted spirit. He was never shy to share the things he loved with you and if you spent enough time with him, you would find yourself loving those things just as much. George was a man of true passion. Anything he put his mind to, his energy and heart was all in. It wouldn’t take you long, though, to understand that George’s most true love and passion was his wife, kids and center of his world, his grandkids. ‘Awesome George’ as he was affectionately known as, was truly that on so many levels. You would sit in awe as you listened to a master storyteller share one of his adventures or stand in awe as you witnessed one first hand.
George held an incredible faith in people, no matter what walk of life they came from, George would find a way to walk with them on their path. He was a phenomenal friend. It didn’t matter if you were in another state, six hours or six minutes away, if you said ‘George, I need you,’ George was on his way.
George loved the outdoors and being in Jehovah’s creations. In fact, he love the outdoors so much he dug and stocked his own fishing pond in his backyard. His faith in his higher power was unshakable no matter what trial or battle he faced. We will remain in the fight for you now George…until we see you again.

Kris A. Hartzell - May 26, 1949 - February 19, 2024

Departed: 02/19/2024 (Rockford)
Obituary Preview: Kris Ann (Weber) Hartzell, 74, of Rockford, passed away on February 19, 2024, at home surrounded by family. She was born May 26, 1949, in Milwaukee, WI. She grew up in Brookfield, WI where she met her husband Ronald J. Hartzell of 52 years. They moved to Rockford, IL in 1974, where they raised their 4 children and have watched their 7 grandchildren grow. Kris stayed at home while her kids were young until they started elementary school where she then started to work at Nashold Elementary and became a mom to many more children. Everyone loved Mrs. Hartzell. She was involved in all her children did along with helping the school in many ways. Her job duties included lunchroom aide, room mother, K-3 basic skills aide, chaperoned field trips, assistant to Brownie Troop 136 (where she made all the costumes for the plays and organized craft projects), student council advisor, vice present of PTO, was involved in the tutoring program and summer reading program, volunteered for years to work the safety patrol. Kris made every child feel special and loved. Everyone loved the way she warmed the halls of Nashold with her special art talent. Her favorite store was the 3R store! Kris was even nominated for the “those who Excel” award in 1991 through the Rockford Public Schools. After her children were out of school, Kris then went on to work for State Farm Insurance as an office manager until retirement. She worked there for many years. Kris really loved working at State Farm as much as she did the school. She met many new individuals, and she made many new friends, including her good friend, Judy Carlson. Just like all the kids loved her at school, all her clients loved her at State Farm. She was very active in her children’s lives growing up, where she served on the parent committee for Rockford Pony Baseball where her son played, worked the concession stand, volunteered as a scorekeeper, and would step in to coach when her husband could not make it. Kris always attended sporting events for all her children. She was in many different bowling leagues, loved to cook, quilt, sew, and crochet afghans. She would make her children’s Halloween costumes, blankets for the grandchildren, and quilts for everyone. She loved to watch her westerns on TV and of course watch the Packers play. Kris loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. One thing that has been carried on is family dinners, always making sure growing up that we ate as a family. Now that everyone is grown and out of the house, we all still get together and meet on Sunday for family dinners. Her recipes are even used for some of these dinners in which she taught her children to cook. Kris was able to be around for all of her grandchildren’s births. They all loved coming to see “Gumma”!
She is survived by those who loved her most, husband, Ronald J. Hartzell; children, Tanya (Brent) Tullock, Tricia Hartzell, and Tyler (Kelly) Hartzell; son-in-law, Mike McCammond; grandchildren, Logan and Kayla Tullock, Kyle Hartzell, Madison and Alyssa McCammond, and Avery and Bria Hartzell; and brother, Phil (Kay) Weber. She is predeceased by her parents, Russell and Ruth Weber; daughter, Tabatha McCammond; and brother, Jim Weber.
Kris will be deeply missed by many. Not only her family and friends but all the people she has touched throughout the years.

Edith Gertrud Grade - May 03, 1929 - February 13, 2024

Departed: 02/13/2024 (Rockford)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved mother Edith Gertrud Grade, 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Meridian, Idaho on February 13, 2024. She was born in 1929 in the farming community of Farbezin, Germany (Pomerania) and near the Baltic Sea to Paul and Ida Borths. She lived a happy busy childhood on the farm with her six sisters. They were all displaced from their home by the horrors of World War II and its aftermath in Germany. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1951 and made her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She met Lothar Grade, coincidentally also a German immigrant from Pommerania near her childhood home, at a German club dance in Milwaukee in 1952 and they married the following year. They were married for 59 years until his death. They moved to Rockford, Illinois in 1961 as Lothar co-founded Northern Prosthetics & Orthopedic Company. Edith and Lothar lived most of their lives in Rockford, and raised their three children, Hans, Susan, and Heidi, there. They gave their children the gift of a second language and a rich heritage, as German was spoken at home. She especially enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, sewing, baking, cooking, and going on walks in nature. She had lots of plants indoors, too, and enjoyed the challenge of growing orchids without a greenhouse. Classical music was always playing in the background, and she attended many symphony orchestra concerts and operas. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing, cross country skiing, ping pong, and badminton. She travelled often to Germany with the family, and those trips always included a side-trip to the mountains of Austria or Switzerland. Her favorite destination was Switzerland, and in particular the Lauterbrunnen region, where she loved hiking and the hospitality of Hotel Silberhorn. She made regular trips to spend time with her children and grandchildren living in upstate New York and San Diego, with particularly memorable trips to see the fall colors in the Adirondack Mountains and treasured shells found beachcombing at Silver Strand Beach. Shortly after Lothar retired, they did more adventurous travel to Australia, New Zealand, and South America. She continued to travel widely and her last trip to Europe at the age of 89 included a hike of the Panorama Trail in Switzerland, a 3-mile trail with expansive views of Grindelwald and the Eiger Mountain. Especially in later years, she became an avid reader. She lived in Lake in the Hills, Illinois for a few years following Lothar’s death, and then moved to Idaho with her daughter Heidi and son-in-law Jay about seven years ago. Edith was blessed with good health for most of her life and got to know the beautiful landscapes of Idaho and its surrounding states after the move West. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a trip to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Edith is survived by her son, Hans Grade with wife Marsha of Niskayuna, New York, by her daughter Susan Briest with husband George of San Diego, California, and by her daughter Heidi Radke with husband Jay of Meridian, Idaho. She is also survived by grandsons Maxwell Grade, Noah Grade, and Ryan Briest and great grandson Lincoln Grade. She has many surviving nieces and nephews and their children in the US, Germany, Belgium, and France. She was predeceased by her husband Lothar in 2012, and by her six sisters Marie Ratzke, Anna Reinke, Paula Habeck, Betty Maischberger, Irma Kraus, and Waltraut Haupt. She will always be remembered as easygoing, generous, and thoughtful, keeping in touch with family and friends near and far over the years. She lived life to its fullest!
