Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial service arrangements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy for future generations.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries can be written by family members, friends, or a professional writer hired by the funeral home or newspaper. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, achievements, and charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others require email or faxed submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber or formal. Including humorous stories or personal anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options for basic death notices, while longer, more detailed obituaries may incur a fee.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes, many online platforms and websites specialize in publishing obituaries. These can be shared easily on social media and accessed by a wider audience than traditional print newspapers.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeline varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Some newspapers may publish obituaries within a few days of submission, while others may take several weeks or even months.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or changes can be made to an online obituary. However, printed newspapers often have strict deadlines and may not be able to make changes once the issue has gone to press.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or family-only publication. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about charitable organizations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause close to their heart.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries or genealogical societies that maintain collections of historical records. Many websites also offer searchable databases of archived obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?

In most cases, yes. If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary online or in print.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

Don't hesitate to ask for help from family members, friends, or a professional writer. You can also find templates and examples online to guide you through the process.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes or poems can add depth and emotion to the tribute.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

Contact the publication immediately if you notice any errors. They will work with you to correct the mistake and reprint the corrected version if possible.

What if I want to write multiple obituaries for different publications?

You can tailor each obituary to fit the specific audience and tone of each publication. Just be sure to keep track of deadlines and submission requirements for each one.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to add links, videos, audio clips, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform or website. Some may keep archives indefinitely, while others may remove older content after a certain period.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

Draft out your thoughts and ideas first. You can also consult with family members or friends who knew the deceased well. Remember, the goal is to celebrate their life and legacy!
