Sr. Mary Jane Frances Garry - October 30, 1926 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Newington)
Obituary Preview: WEST HARTFORD—Sister Mary Jane Garry (Jane Frances Garry), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT, entered eternal life on April 5, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford. She was born in Stamford, CT, on October 30, 1926, to the late Thomas Martin Garry and Laura Margaret (Ellis) Garry. Following graduation from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford, a high school founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister entered the Community on September 24, 1943, celebrating her Profession of Vows on August 24, 1949. At the time of her death, Sister was 95 years of age and in her 79th year of Religious Life.
Sister Mary Jane earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, a Master's Degree in English from Boston College, and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Loyola University in Chicago. Along with those degrees, other educational endeavors included business administration and theology at the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, MA. Sister taught in elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, at St. Mary High School, Ridge, Maryland, and at her alma mater, Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford. When St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, CT, opened in 1966, Sister Mary Jane accepted the first assistant principal position, serving in ministry with Father Edmund O’Brien, principal. Five years later, Sister was elected Provincial Superior of the North American Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT. Upon completing her term as Provincial, Sister Mary Jane was elected to the General Council in Rome, Italy, serving as a General Councilor for twelve years. During this time, Sister also assumed the position of General Treasurer for the Congregation, applying her business and financial acumen throughout the Congregation’s many Provinces and Regions around the globe.
Returning to the United States in 1992, Sister continued in her position of Treasurer for another six years. She also accepted a call to become the archivist for the US Province, a ministry she held until 2017. Always on mission, Sister Mary Jane moved to Oakland, CA, in 2000 as a companion with another member of the Province. She continued with archives, investing her time and talent in writing and maintaining the story of the US Province in particular. Always looking to be of service, she took on an additional ministry as she offered her financial knowledge to the Sisters of Notre Dame in the Oakland area.
Embracing roles of leadership and guidance through the early years of Vatican II, changes blended with a keen vision of new trends in ministries. Sister Mary Jane embodied the idea that God wants women and men to be free to utilize all their talents and opportunities in ways that build up this world. A world where faith, justice, peace, and love can flourish, a place of grace, a place of being able to give life to others. To that end, she encouraged Sisters serving in locations around the world to embrace new ways to minister in the world, meeting the needs of people without distinction. Her greatest joy was to learn how Sisters were challenging themselves with a new ministry accepted, another journey into something never attempted before.
In 2015, Sister Mary Jane returned to Connecticut with her longtime companion and dear friend Sister Jean Sauntry. She continued to work in the Provincial archives, now located in the Administrative Offices in Newington. She never ceased writing the history of the Province for publication. For Sister Mary Jane, everything was always a labor of love for the Community.
In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Mary Jane is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Korwek of Wallingford CT, and Florida, her brother and sister-in-law, John and Barbara Garry of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, Sister is predeceased by her sisters Barbara Ann Cronin and husband, John, and Marie Dowding and husband, David, and her brother-in-law, Robert Korwek.

Sr. Helen Nilan - September 30, 1927 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Newington)
Obituary Preview: WEST HARTFORD— Sister Helen Nilan (Sister Mary Thaddeus), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT died April 1, 2022, at Msgr. Bojnowski Manor in New Britain, CT. Born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 30, 1927, to the late James Howard Nilan and Ellen Mary (Gordan) Nilan, Sister Helen entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1950, and celebrated her Profession of Vows on August 23, 1956. At the time of her death, Sister Helen was 94 years of age and was in her 72nd year of Religious Life.
Sister Helen graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford, an all-girls high school opened and administrated in 1922 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Following her time at the Academy, she went on to graduate from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Waterbury, CT. After joining the community, Sister Helen earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, and assumed a position St. Joseph Hospital in Stamford, eventually supervising the pediatric department. She was missioned to St. John School in Deep River as an infirmarian, a position she enjoyed as much as her young charges enjoyed the extra attention she provided during illnesses.
In 1966, Sister Helen graciously responded to our Congregation’s invitation to go on mission to Iceland. For several years, she served as an RN supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital, Reykjavik, Iceland, and later, as the Administrator of St. Joseph Hospital, in Hafnarfjord, another one of the Sisters of St. Joseph Danish missions. The Danish Province pioneered work to benefit the sick in Iceland, paying attention to the many military personnel and their families stationed there who frequented the Hospital. While not enamored of the snow and cold, Sister Helen delighted in her time in Iceland, offering healing and her good humor as a soothing balm to patients, staff and families.
Sister Helen returned to the United States for a much-needed vacation. However, a severe car accident on a trip from the Provincial House in West Hartford back to St. Joseph Hospital ended her dream to return to her beloved Iceland. For a time, she resumed nursing duties at St. Joseph Hospital before moving to St. Mary Hospital in Waterbury, there becoming an integral person in the Pastoral Care Department. Her caring personality and good cheer offered patients and families a friendly face and listening ear. Not one to forgo a challenge, Sister Helen took up both calligraphy and oil painting as hobbies, producing lovely works of art in both mediums.
Walking the long halls in the hospital eventually became difficult. She responded to another invitation to serve as a chauffeur for the Sisters living at the Provincial House in West Hartford. Sister Helen became a volunteer driver, sharing her driving talent for fourteen years. Still not ready to retire, Sister Helen took on the role of reception/ switchboard operator for the Provincial House, a natural ministry she expressed through her voice on the phone and her warm welcome and hospitality as she invited guests through the doors.
Always a lover of dogs of all breeds and sizes, Sister Helen expressed special joy when visiting guests to the convent arrived with their furry companions. On her shift, she tucked away a small bag of doggie treats for lucky four-pawed guests. The Sisters always knew when a special guest arrived by her hearty welcome and laugh, and the occasional thank you ‘bark’ from the guest.
As her health declined, she never missed attending activities of interest, and maintained a high level of attention to all community endeavors. Requiring more care after a fall, she moved to Bojnowski Manor with her usual graciousness. The Sisters of St. Joseph wish to thank the staff and administration for their attention and care showered on Sister Helen during these last years.
In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Helen is survived by a cousin and his wife, Roy and Roe Cummins of Pennsylvania, and dear friends, Patricia Delyonas and family of Norwalk and Jane E. Hall and family of Bethel. She is predeceased by her sister, Mary Nilan.

Obituary Preview: WEST HARTFORD— Sister Agnes Murphy (Sister Magdalen Marie), a Sister of St Joseph of Chambéry, West Hartford, CT, died at Monsignor Bojnowski Manor in New Britain on January 28, 2022. Born in Hartford, CT, on September 7, 1934, of the late James J. and Mary A. Callahan Murphy, Sister Agnes entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 3, 1957. She celebrated her Final Profession of Vows on March 1, 1965. At the time of her death, Sister was 87 years of age and in her 64th year of Religious Life.
Sister Agnes, a graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, and a Master Degree in Nursing from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. She went on to earn her Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Hartford, Hartford, CT.
For twelve years, Sister Agnes worked as a staff nurse at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT, serving as Assistant Director of Nursing in Ambulatory Services and in the Emergency Department. Then, a change of ministry took her to the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) in Hartford, where she stepped in as a staff nurse and psychiatric nurse specialist. Always a person to follow an invitation to serve those needing special attention, Sister began ministry as a counselor and education coordinator for the Salvation Army Treatment Center, Hartford, CT. She eventually became the Director of the Clinical Program at Rushford Treatment Center, Middletown, CT. A longtime AA member with a sobriety record of 40+ years, she walked many clients through the 12-Step Program. Sister was a wonderful mentor and support person for hundreds of recovering alcohols over the years. Keen insight coupled with a direct yet gentle manner earned her the trust of many persons struggling with addiction and recovery.
Another new opportunity presented itself. Sister Agnes accepted an assignment as Program and Retreat Director at St. Joseph-by-the-Sea Retreat Center, South Mantoloking, NJ, sponsored by the Religious Teachers Filippini in Morristown, NJ. Here, she shared her deep spirituality and kindness with people of all faith persuasions and backgrounds desirous of spending time in prayer and retreat at the center. At St. Joseph-by-the-Sea, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Sister Agnes caught up again with a favorite hobby and relaxing pastime, that of surf fishing. Rushford Treatment Center welcomed Sister Agnes back to their staff on her return to Connecticut. She remained there until she retired from active full-time ministry. Volunteer work followed as she provided professional services at St. James Court 55+ Active Adult Community in West Hartford as a weekly blood pressure nurse and confidant. Frances M. Pelletier - August 14, 1944 - November 15, 2021

Departed: 11/15/2021 (Newington)
Obituary Preview: The beautiful life of Frances M. Pelletier ended on November 15, 2021, in South Windsor, Connecticut, from complications of the ugly disease of Alzheimer’s. She was the beloved wife of Patrick L. Pelletier. She was born Frances Mary Martin, August 14, 1944, in the lakeside village of Sinclair Maine, the second oldest of eight children of Gerard and Gilda (Michaud) Martin. She graduated with honors from St Agatha (Maine) High School class of 1961. Fran worked in the credit department of G. Fox & Co. (now Macy’s), and at SNET (now AT&T). On May 27, 1966, mutual friends introduced “Fran” Martin and “Pat” Pelletier to each other. On their first date, they saw the romance movie, Dr. Zhivago. Their own love story quickly blossomed, and they married in 1967. They were blessed with a pre-mature lovely petite baby girl, Lisa, in 1971. Fran chose to be a stay-at-home Mom, leading an exemplary life of learning, teaching, and volunteering. Fran and Pat lived in Newington CT for 35 years, in Vernon CT, and at their homestead in the Tampa Bay region of Florida. Frances was talented, generous, patriotic, and energetic. She was an accomplished cook and baker, amassing a collection of hundreds of cookbooks. She purchased a sewing machine and a serger machine, taught herself to operate both, and created thousands of garments, household, and craft items. She anonymously donated a great many to organizations and the needy. She maintained a spotless and organized home, and always welcomed the newer technologies of computers, iPads, and smartphones. Frances was a devout Catholic and served six years as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church, Newington, often bringing holy communion, brightness, and hope to housebound parishioners. She volunteered for eight years at her daughter’s school, St. Mary’s, Newington. Fran never wanted a dull moment. At times she took on part-time employment, for years as a customer service rep at Lechmere Store in Newington. In retirement, Fran and Pat traveled throughout the USA and Canada. They found adventures in 38 states, including an exciting rafting trip on the Colorado River and a private tour of the Pentagon. They explored Florida’s Gulf coast, knowing the good places from St Pete Beach to Clearwater Beach. They enjoyed Yankees games in NYC and at spring training in Tampa, attended Big East basketball games and men’s NCAA Final Four. Fran took a quarterly jaunt to the casino to play poker at the Let-It-Ride table and became one of the few to hit the elusive royal flush, in spades. Fran loved life and children. She cherished her three grandchildren’s sleepovers, falling for their practical jokes, and sharing loads of hearty laughter with them. Her patient, gentle love and support for her daughter and grandchildren cannot be overstated. Frances came from French ancestry, including deep Acadian (Cajun) roots. She was attractive with lovely blue eyes, always immaculately groomed, and classy dressed. Her captivating smile once made the “smile of the day” on the front page of a CT newspaper. Afflicted early with Alzheimer’s disease, Fran was closely protected and cared for by her husband Pat, for many years. She then lived in Memory Care at Brookdale South Windsor, continuing to receive the compassionate care she deserved. Frances is survived by her husband of 54 years, Patrick L. Pelletier; her beloved daughter and best friend Lisa A. Bzowyckyj and Lisa’s husband Daniel R. Bzowyckyj of Tolland; her treasured granddaughter, U.S. Army ROTC cadet Katherine “Katie” N. Bzowyckyj, at the University of Rhode Island; her two special grandsons, Matthew D. Bzowyckyj, at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana; and Michael R. Bzowyckyj, a student at Kingswood-Oxford School, West Hartford. She also leaves four brothers, Robert “Bob” Martin of St. David Maine, Jerry Martin of Glastonbury CT, Paul Martin of Sinclair Maine, and Joel Martin of Bristol, CT. Frances was predeceased by her infant daughter “Baby Anne”, and three younger siblings, Marie Martin, Bernadette Franck, and James Martin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, November 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 626 Willard Ave, Newington. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Sunday November 21, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 P.M. at Fisette-Batzner Funeral Home at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, CT 06111. SR. Marita Soucy CSJ - October 05, 1931 - November 11, 2021

Departed: 11/11/2021 (Newington)
Obituary Preview: WEST HARTFORD- Sister Marita Soucy (Muriel Marie Soucy), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT, died at Monsignor Bojnowski Manor in New Britain on November 11. Born in Hartford, CT, on October 5, 1931, of the late Clifford Soucy and Blanche Morency Soucy, Sister Marita entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1949. She celebrated her Perpetual Profession of Vows on August 24, 1955. At the time of her death, Sister Marita was 90 years of age and in her 72nd year of Religious Life.
Sister Marita earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, a Master's Degree in French from Assumption College, Worcester, MA, and Certification in Elementary School Administration from Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. During her years of elementary school teaching and principalships in the Archdiocesan Schools of Hartford and the Bridgeport Diocese, she found time to spend her summers in Appalachia teaching Bible School in Kentucky. Along with three other Sisters of St. Joseph, Sister helped establish a Day Care Center in the Kentucky hills for local children. Sister Marita eventually gave in to her adventurous nature and in 1986 moved to Alaska where, with several other Sisters of St. Joseph, she established a ministry in Fairbanks, AK. She first taught and then assumed a principalship at Immaculate Conception School in Fairbanks. Later, Sister took a position at the Chancery of Fairbanks, where she ably inaugurated the Stephen Ministry Program of the Diocese of Fairbanks and was the founding board member of the Urban Samaritan Center. Both programs served the poor.
Never one to refuse a challenge, Sister Marita accepted an invitation from Fairbank’s Bishop Michael J. Kaniecki, SJ, to work in the field of pastoral ministry, attending to the elderly, the dying, and the imprisoned. Eventually, a long-desired dream materialized as Sister moved to Galena, AK, to work with the Koyukon Athabaskan Indian community. She served as co-director of the Kateri Tekakwitha Center, the first of its kind along the Yukon River. There Sister worked tirelessly and lovingly within the villages along the river, providing Stephen Ministry Outreach, adult Scripture classes, and retreat work. On returning to Fairbanks, AK, Sister inaugurated the Office of Urban Native Ministry of the Fairbanks Diocese.
Sister Marita also had the joy of creating the Lay Associates of the Sisters of St. Joseph. To this day, CSJ Associates continue to work for the poor even though our Sisters no longer minister in the state of Alaska. After twenty-four years, Sister Marita left her beloved mission, but the people have not forgotten her years of dedication. Sister Marita, fortunately, was able to visit and re-connect with the people on her yearly visit to her sister, Claire, who resides in Fairbanks. Upon her return to CT, she never retired.
Sister Marita loved family, friends, and her Sisters in Community without distinction, evidenced by her cheerful disposition, loving greeting, and happy smile. Even these last years, as physical diminishment and the aging process set in, Sister lived the present moment as if it were the best moment of her life. She immensely enjoyed life, and her infectious laughter was a direct sign of the exuberant joy she felt in her heart. Sister Marita often said that if she were to have a coat of arms, it would read from St. Peter: “Cast all your cares on the Lord, knowing that God has care for you.” She also would mention that her name Soucy meant “care.” She cared for all with whom and for whom she ministered.
In addition to her Sisters in Community, especially her good friend, Sister Elizabeth Anderson, Sister Marita is survived by her sister, Claire Desrochers, and many nieces and nephews. Sister is predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Annette and Andy Moreau and Aline and Larry Fagan, her brother, Leo Soucy, her sister, Jeanne Soucy, and a brother-in-law, Bob Desrochers.

Sister Frances Tighe - March 28, 1925 - April 16, 2020

Departed: 04/16/2020 (Newington)
Obituary Preview: Sister Frances Tighe (Sister Mary Carmella), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT, died at St. Mary Home in West Hartford on Thursday, April 16, 2020. Born in Hartford, CT, on March 28, 1925, of the late Thomas Joseph Tighe and Anna (Vaughan) Tighe, Sister Frances entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on February 20, 1948, and celebrated her Profession of Vows on August 24, 1954. Sister Frances was 95 years of age and had been in Religious Life for 72 years.
Sister Frances earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT, and a Master of Science Degree in Special Education from Central State University, New Britain, CT. Sister taught for many years in the elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, including fourteen years at St. Joseph, Bristol, CT, and six years at St. Francis Xavier, Waterbury, CT. Perhaps her greatest joy was a teaching assignment in her Alma Mater, Our Lady of Sorrows, Hartford, CT. Her last years of formal teaching were spent at the Intensive Education Center, West Hartford, CT. The word retire was never a part of Sister Frances’ vocabulary. A new teaching opportunity presented itself in adult education as she coached students needing to learn English, a necessary step to complete a GED in preparation for employment. Sister often remarked how much she loved this opportunity because she felt adults were excited and appreciative to gain an education that would assist them to be independent and provide for their families. Sister Frances felt inspired by the fact that her students left their native lands, sometimes enduring many hardships, to become part of the "American Dream."
A woman of great faith, Sister was also gifted with a great sense of humor. She opened her heart to her students, winning their admiration and trust. Her considerate and serene manner in dealing with everyone made her a favorite among all who knew her. Much loved by her religious Sisters, her family, and students, many of her colleagues remained fast friends for years. Of special note is her longtime friend, Fr. Joseph O’Neil, M.S. Sister’s nieces and nephews remember him as another ‘brother’ in the large extended Tighe and Tackett families. Declining health and diminishing eyesight did not deter Sister Frances from engaging with the world around her. Phone calls to many became another form of outreach ministry.
In addition to her Sisters in community, Sister Frances is survived by her nieces Ann Fitch, Barbara Myers, and Maureen Bialosuknia, and her nephews, Girard, James, and Thomas Tackett. Sister was predeceased by her brothers, James T. Tighe and Thomas J. Tighe; her sister Mary Tackett; a niece, Frances Showman, and a nephew-in-law, Wesley Bialosuknia.
