Obituary Preview: Jake fought a good fight but the Lord ended his pain and suffering on Monday, September 28, 2020. Raymond Earl Osborn, Sr. died peacefully in his favorite chair surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 6, 1928 to Carr and Edith (Hole) Osborn in Newaygo, Michigan. He graduated from Newaygo High School in 1946. Jake scored the winning touchdown against rival Grant one year and played several years of community basketball. (You might find some pictures at Jimmy’s Roadhouse or Newaygo Museum.) He married Mary (Stevens) on June 9, 1973. Jake worked in shipping and receiving for General Motors until he retired in March 1988. They wintered comfortably in Florida for many years making lifelong friends. He was a member of Grant Community Church and Newaygo VFW Auxiliary.

He was born November 27, 1956 in Fremont, Michigan, the son of Irwin and Hazel (Mosher) Mathews. Mr. Mathews was a self-employed Welder and Fabricator. His favorite pastime was enjoying a good match of horseshoe pitching. Mr. Mathews is survived by three sons: Corey (Angie) Mathews, Joseph Mathews, and Shawn (Anna) Mathews; six grandchildren: Eric Mathews, Jeremy Mathews, Lexi Carr, Logan Carr, Steven Mathews, and Eli Mathews; three sisters: Sue (Bob) Gilbert, Marilyn (Randy) Ten Hagen and Vicky Mathews; four brothers: Dave (Marlene) Mathews, Tim (Mary) Mathews, Max (Carol) Mathews and Basil Mathews; Steve is also survived be his beloved dog, Molly Hatchet. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Maxine Robart. The Mass of the Christian Burial for Steve will be offered Friday, September 25, 2020 at 11:00 AM from St. Bartholomew Catholic Church with Fr. Steve Geerling presiding. Interment will be made in St. Bartholomew Catholic Cemetery. Obituary Preview: John Arthur Gibson, age 75 of Newaygo, passed away after a long battle on Aug 23, 2020. He was born August 1, 1945 to Alexander and Bertha (Kyle) Gibson. His only brother James Gibson preceded him in death.
He graduated from Big Rapids High School and went on to Ferris State University to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Accounting. He worked for Consumer's Power Company for 11 years and became VP of Quinco Tool Company for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary (O'Neil) Gibson and their two children, Tracy (James) Whitmire and Troy (Theresa) Gibson, grandchildren Nicholas and Trena Whitmire, many sisters-in law, brothers-in law and many nieces and nephews.
He loved fishing, woodworking, reading, playing cards, bowling and game shows. He was a long time member of Alcoholics Anonymous in his later years.
He made the decision to donate his body to science to teach the next generation of medical students and help with further research on how he managed to live as long as he did with all his conditions, which surprised us all.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Church in Newaygo. Due to Covid-19, there will be no luncheon afterward. We will gather outside 15 minutes before to visit beforehand. Masks are optional.

She was born on September 28, 1933 to Joseph and Fern (Crofoot) Hasted in Newaygo, Michigan. She graduated from Newaygo High School in 1951. In 1963 she married Van F. Sparks in Newaygo, Michigan. She held her first job in Fremont, Michigan at Gerber Baby Foods. She moved to Kansas City in 1955 where she worked as a Collateral Department Manager at United Missouri Bank retiring in 1995. While in Kansas City, she was a member of the United Church of Christ and the local chapter of Eastern Stars. She was a member of a women's bowling team for many years and they traveled widely across the USA to participate in tournaments. She was an avid Kansas City Royals baseball fan and a season ticket holder for over 25 years. She moved back to Evart, Michigan in 2009. Mary is survived by her sister Sharen Hasted of Evart, three nephews: Bob (Linda) Ridderikhoff of Algonac, Bill (Leigh Velie) Ridderikhoff of Newaygo, Gary (Stacy) Hasted of Hesperia; two nieces: Sue (Mike) Marker of Evart, Michelle Jackson of Hesperia; 12 great nephews and nieces, 11 great-great nephews and nieces, 3 great-great-great nephews and nieces; two stepdaughters: Altona Duston and family of Kansas City, Missouri and Diana Kelsey and family of Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband, Van F. Sparks; her parents, Fern & Joseph Hasted, her sisters, Arlene Ridderikhoff and her husband, John; Doris Melvin and her husband, Kenneth; her brothers, Keith Hasted and Gene Hasted and his wife, Mary June; her niece, Elaine Ridderikhoff; her great nephew, Reid Ridderikhoff. Visitation will be held Friday, August 7, 2020, 10:00 am - 11:00 am with funeral services at 11:00 am at the Newaygo Cemetery under the pavilion.

She was born on February 22, 1934 in Grand Rapids, MI the daughter of Harold and Gertrude Stoel. Mrs. Mankel was employed in the Quality Assurance Dept with the American Seating Company in Grand Rapids, MI for 28 years, until her retirement. Jean came to Newaygo County in 1985 and made that her permanent residence. Her many interests included being an avid card player, Bingo, trips to the Casinos, and listening to big band music of Benny Goodman and Pete Fountain. She also enjoyed the newest in technology and computer gaming. Jean also in her earlier years drove stock cars in the stock car auto races in Detroit. She was also a member of the Croton American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two sons, David McGee of Morley, MI and Craig (Susan) McGee of San Antonio, TX; one daughter, Kellyann (Reuben) Tucker of Newaygo; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother William (Ruth) Stoel of Madison Hts, MI; one sister, Patricia (George) Biro of Kentucky. Jean is also survived be her very close friend, Bonnie Peck of Coopersville, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard Mankel; one son, Bobby McGee; two sisters, Shirley LeBieu and Peggy Ward ; one brother, Harold Stoel. Philip Kent Bevelacqua - September 26, 1939 - July 08, 2020

Obituary Preview: BEVELACQUA, Philip Kent (1939-2020) cast off his earthly body and entered eternal victory in the early morning of July 8th, 2020 surrounded by family. Phil’s vibrant interests included sailing, boating, flying planes, photography, politics, education, shooting, and hunting; altogether with playing music for decades in the, “Good Time Band.” He was a man of countless talents – a “jack of all trades” – and yet, a true master of many! Phil was classically trained at Kendall College as an artist and designer, where he later taught. He worked as a contract designer for such firms as American Seating, Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Shaw Walker. Everyone knew Phil – and he seemed to know almost everyone, no matter where he went! He would strike up conversation even if you (or he!) had dialed the wrong number. Those close knew him to be full of love, music, laughter, interest, and conviction; chiefly his four children who were his source of greatest pride. Phil was born September 26th, 1939, and born-again May 8th, 1973. Phil was a lifetime resident of Hess Lake in Newaygo, where he passed in his sleep at 80 years old. His family expectantly longs for their reunion in glory with Jesus.
Phil is survived by his four children, Gina M. Bevelacqua, Philip J. Bevelacqua, Jaime S. Bevelacqua, and Joseph A. (Erikiah) Bevelacqua; his grandchildren, Justin and Nicky Hills - Travis Bevelacqua - Isabella and Sophia Yousif - Aurelio, Salvatore, Filippo, and Vera Bevelacqua; as well as Susan VanBelzen, and Carole Corrigan. He was preceded in death by his grandsons Teri Hills and Michael Hagen; his parents, Aurelio and Anna; and his sisters, June and Juanita.
Family and friends are encouraged to join together for Visitation (10:00am - 12:00n), a Celebration of Life Service (12:30pm), and a dessert reception on Monday, July 13th, 2020 at Resonate Church in Newaygo. His son, Pastor Joe Bevelacqua, Officiating. Private burial will take place later at the Newaygo Cemetery.

On April 2, 1989 she married Richard Huedepohl in Jackson Park, Washington. Donna worked as a trainer for Sonic; among other part time jobs. She was a loving mother and wife.
Donna is survived by husband Richard, son Joshua (Denise) Alleman of White Cloud, two grandsons: Aramis Alleman, Raiden Alleman; granddaughter Zella Alleman; brother Mike, sister Roni, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Verda June Bushen went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 17, 2020 surrounded by her family. Verda was born to Floyd and Ruth (Kniffen) Crotser in Burlington, Michigan on March 18, 1931. Her family moved to Newaygo where Verda began her kindergarten year. She graduated from Newaygo High School in 1950. She married Larry Abbott on October 13, 1951. Together they had three children. Verda was a full-time, stay-at-home mother devoted to her family. She was a member of Grace Bible Church where she played the piano and taught Sunday School and Bible School. Larry passed away August 16, 1982. In 1985, she married Gordon Bushen. They attended Volney Bible Church where she also was a pianist. She is survived by her husband Gordon Bushen, her children: Holly (Ray) Bauer of Newaygo, Clint (Michelle) Abbott of Newaygo and Lori (Phil) Long of Grand Rapids; her grandchildren: Bethanie (Dean) duChemin, Jeff (Jessica) Bauer, Nathan Bauer, Matthew Abbott, Aaron Abbott, Jamie (Kelly) Abbott, Amy and Caroline Long; and 6 great-grandchildren in addition to her stepchildren: Cindy (Rudy) Garcia of White Cloud, Mark (Joann) Bushen of White Cloud and Jane (David) Gray of South Carolina; 12 step-grandchildren and 18 step-great grandchildren. Verda was preceded in death by her first husband Larry Abbott, granddaughter Tamara Abbott, her parents, her sisters: Dorothy Hunter, Evelyn Rounds, Helen Cattanach and Doris Corrigan; her brothers: Alvin Crotser and Eldon (Sam) Crotser; and stepson Randy Bushen. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sisters Frances Pyper of Grand Rapids, Bea Newton of Newaygo, and Sally Wright of Kent City along with many nieces, nephews and friends. A private graveside service has been held. A celebration of Verda’s life will be held at Grace Bible Church, Newaygo on Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at 11:00 am. Many heartfelt thanks to all those who sent cards, flowers, and prayers for Verda and her family. A special thanks to Spectrum Hospice and to Nurse Tammy and Shannon for their loving care. He was the son of Katherine Kornoelje and Frederick Hayoz born on April 26, 1936 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chet (Jack Kaye) attended Grand Rapids Central High School and served in the army during the Korean War. Chet went on to be a stockbroker after the service. He had a passion for travel and took several trips to Europe and over 40 cruises.
Mr. Hayoz is survived by his children, Janice (Dave) Aussicker, Braden Hayoz, and Elizabeth (Doug) Staab; his step-children Rick (Brenda) Isenhart and Deanna (Brent) Kantola. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie Hayoz, and son Brian Hayoz.

Jack was born in Wayland, Michigan on March 22, 1933 to Jacob and Maude (Albright) Deering. He married Noma Perry Moore on January 14, 2011. Jack worked as a heavy equipment operator for Grand Rapids Gravel for 44 years. He was proud to say he only missed one day of work in all of those years! Jack loved the river, hosting many parties for friends and family. He welcomed everyone to enjoy his blessings. Jack also loved to hunt and fish and was an avid outdoorsman. He welcomed everyone to sit on the deck to enjoy the river. Jack was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4249 in Newaygo, and the American Legion 381 in Croton. Jack was a veteran of the Korean War, building airstrips for the base. He was also a member of the Operating Engineers Union in Grand Rapids. Jack is survived by his wife Noma, 2 sons; Jacob (Laurie) Deering III of Wayland and Scott (Rose) Moore of Grant, 5 daughters; Jodie DeYoung of Rockford, Laura Bates of Newaygo, Peggy (Scott) Meeuwenberg of Sparta, Chris (Geary) Olk of Holland, Sally (Steve) Prangley of Jonesboro, Georgia, sister; Helen Deering of Byron Center, 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great- grandchildren and a very dear friend Greg Gagnon.

Leon was an active member of Jehovah's Witnesses and spent many hours talking to the public, family, and friends about how the Bible gives us guidance and hope. He loved farming and raising animals. He is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Joyce, his daughters, Angie and Rhonda (Tim) , his grandchildren: Staci (Pilgrim), Jake, Shelby, Lindsey, Terry; and great grand children: Peyton and Lorelei; his brothers: Charles (Hulda) Berles and Richard (Norma) Berles; sister-in-law Josie Johnson; and many nieces and nephews, and dear friends: Glen Robinson, Walt Gerst, Richard and Leroy Langworthy, and Chad Hoffman. Jim was a kind, generous, and hardworking man. He worked as a lineman for Local 876 Hydaker- Wheatlake for 35 years until he retired in 2003. Jim was a tough as nails lineman but with a heart of gold. He was a proud member of IBEW Local 876 for 50 years. He loved being a grandpa and spending time with his grandchildren. He was proud of his family and loved them all very much.
Jim enjoyed traveling the country with Joyce. Alaska was one of their favorite places to visit. Jim was a very successful big buck hunter over his lifetime. He was an expert shot and rarely missed his target. He loved to hunt and fish and to be outdoors. He loved to go fishing with Joyce and he once caught a 6 pound large mouth bass that he was so proud of that he had it mounted. He was a master repairman of all things. He fixed and restored a '54 Chevy Belaire that he was proud to drive around town. He will be remembered as a great man, wonderful friend, and helpful neighbor.

Obituary Preview: Helen Marie Botschka, age 75 of Newaygo, Michigan, got her wings on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. She went to Heaven surrounded by her family.
Helen was born May 30, 1944 in Traverse City, Michigan, the daughter of Louis and Marie Baynton. She was employed at the East Traverse Catholic Federal Credit Union for 17 years. She was married to John Botschka for 33 years and he preceded her in death on May 30, 2015, along with her two adopted daughters, Autumn and Honey.
Helen was a foster care provider, a homemaker and care taker for her daughters and her husband, John Joseph, especially the last seven years of his pain and suffering, while he was wheelchair bound and could not walk. She was a member of St. Bartholomew Parish of Newaygo. She collected Cardinals for many years and was known by many as Cardinal. The Amish were very special friends of Helen. Helen had 4 replacements done and had Breast Cancer and a tumor removed and was left with many side effects due to the chemo and was very sick for several months. She went to the Cancer Care Center (Chemo center) in Fremont for 2 years and was on a chemo drug for the next 10 years. Helen's ministry was several prayer chains including her Cardinal Prayer Group, and 50 people with no computers that she sent snail mail updates to with colored envelopes, cards and many stickers to cheer them up. She also had 85 friends on Facebook that she kept updated regularly.
Helen wanted to thank all her family and friends who supported her and her family thru all the years of ups and downs. She, like John, had the favorite saying ...Live one day at a time and live it to the fullest... Helen is survived by her daughter Pooja Marie Terese, who is a blessing from Mother Teresa orphanage in Bombay India, her sister NancyAnne Baynton in Traverse City, her brother Larry Baynton and family in Texas, her sister Joyce Uhlik and grandpuppies, Ruby and Mia in Tennessee, and many family members in North Carolina and Florida. The very special family of Stan and Brenda Stanley, Kayla Stanley, Ruthanne Stanley (Douglas) Jennings, Zayne Joseph Jennings, and her special Bunny, Jr., that is Pooja's pet. She was a wonderful grandma to many kids that she "adopted".
She was also preceded in death by her brother Richard Baynton and brother-in-law William Tindall.
Helen would love to thank the many families, friends, doctors, lots of nurses over the years, and Bev St. John, our family nurse for over 30 years, and all family and friends on the computer all over the US, Australia, and South Africa. At Helen's request cremation has taken place.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Bartholomew with Father Steve Geerling and Deacon Jeff Burns officiating. Visitation will be held at the church 2 hours before the Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the St. Bartholomew Church, 599 W. Brooks Street, Newaygo, MI 49337 with Fr. Steve Geerling celebrating. Military Honors will be rendered immediately following the funeral mass at church.
Visitors may also greet the family one hour prior to the service at Church.
Burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery in Croton Township.
