Pamela Raylene Cook - December 26, 1958 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Grant)
Obituary Preview: Pamela Raylene Cook PhD of Sand Lake, Michigan, departed this earth to be with her Lord & Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, February 18, 2024, after an exciting and fulfilling life of 65 years.
Pamela was born on December 26, 1958, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Jimmy and Beverly (Lord) Cook, and grew up in the rural Grant, Michigan, area with her sister, Koleen (Cook) Schlatter. Pamela and her family were active members of the Grant Wesleyan Church during her youth. She was a member of the Grant High School class of 1977 where she excelled as a stellar science student, an oboist in the school band, a cheerleader, an Interlochen music scholarship winner (where she had the opportunity to shake the hand of President Gerald Ford!), and commencement speaker.
After high school, Pamela earned a Dental Assistant degree from Grand Rapids Educational Center and worked in family dentistry in her hometown for two years. She continued as a Dental Assistant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to help pay her way while earning a double major in Bible & Early Childhood Education at Fort Wayne Bible College. This led to her first teaching position with the three-year-old class at Grabill Missionary Church Nursery School.
Pamela’s growing love for teaching led her to achieve an Elementary Education degree at Taylor University. This opened the door for classroom positions at Fort Wayne Community Schools and East Allen County Schools in Indiana, as well as Liberty Christian School, Morley-Stanwood Schools, and Tri-County Schools in Michigan.
Pamela was invited to launch a new Kindergarten program at Leo Methodist Pre-School in Leo, Indiana, where one of her students was her nephew, Kristian Schlatter. While in Leo, she also started her own business, The Victorian Rose Ladies Boutique.
It wasn’t long before Pamela began working on a Master’s Degree in Education at Indiana Wesleyan University. This led to a position with Early Childhood Alliance where she assisted with developing pre-schools in the Fort Wayne area and credentialing pre-school teachers throughout northeast Indiana. Pamela was also selected to participate on a panel that certified accreditation of pre-schools and daycares in northern Indiana. And, if that was not enough, Pamela served as an adjunct education professor at Indiana University, Indiana Wesleyan University, and Ivy Tech Community College.
Pamela soon sensed God calling her to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Windsor in Canada. As part of her doctorate program, Pamela moved to the nation of Belize to conduct research with abused and neglected children at the Liberty Children’s Home. Her doctoral research also included on site training in the Reggio Emelia approach to early childhood learning in Reggio Emelia, Italy. Pamela successfully defended her research and earned her PhD in Child Development - Educational Studies from the University of Windsor in 2010.
For the next fourteen years, Dr. Cook had an extensive influence in the field of early childhood education as she continued to teach on the university level, authoring early childhood curriculum, overseeing student teacher qualifications, writing numerous articles for higher education publications, reviewing grants for early childhood centers, helping establish early childhood schools in the US and Canada, serving as a consultant for Reggio Emelia focused schools, and speaking at various education conferences across the United States. She was also a recurring participant for at least 12 years at the International Round Table Symposium held at the University of Oxford, England.
One of the highlights of Dr. Cook’s career was coordinating and editing a six volume series of academic books titled "Educational Trends.” She was in the process of compiling the 7th edition of this series at the time of her death, and her colleagues are joining forces with Cambridge Scholars Publishing to finish this book in honor of Dr. Cook.
During the course of her life, Pamela had the privilege of traveling to at least ten countries around the world for both education and Christian mission focused projects. But her first love was with the people of Belize - especially their schools, teachers, students, and families. Her desire to inspire and improve education in Belize resulted in Dr. Cook originating the Belizean International Symposium on Education, an annual gathering over the past 14 years of early childhood education professors from various countries to visit Belize and provide training for Belizean teachers. In recent years, Dr. Cook added the Study Abroad Student Symposium to her itinerary as a way for education students at US Colleges to connect with pre-schools and elementary schools in Belize. Pamela’s family hopes to continue her legacy of ministering to the people of Belize by establishing a fund that will provide opportunities for annual mission projects there.

Jim graduated from Belding High School and was drafted into the service for which he proudly served as an Army medic in the Korean War. Jim was very proud of being a veteran and always had a military story waiting for anyone he talked with. Jim also served as the mayor and police chief of the City of Grant for over 10 years. On March 19, 1961, he married his loving wife, of almost 62 years, Louise, who has been eagerly awaiting their reunion for 9
months. Jim enjoyed all types of sports and was usually seen at any Grant sporting event cheering loudly. He was a big fan of Grand Valley football and along with his son would attend as many games as he possibly could get to that didn’t interfere with a Grant game. He was an avid hunter and traveled to Canada, Alaska, and many states out west to grab the most beautiful elk, deer and bear he could. walking to the post office and to the beautiful blueberry patch that he maintained with pride. He spent winters in Florida with his daughter and stayed full time for the past few years. He enjoyed walking in the sunshine and sitting out by the pool. His famous quote for Florida was “this is the life, doesn’t get any better than this”! Jim’s pride and joy were his children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren who he would spend as much time as possible with. Jim, alongside his father, opened “Schroeder’s Sporting Goods” and he remained there for 46 years. His store was not just for sporting goods equipment, it was the “hangout” every morning for many as he always had coffee, donuts, and a warm fire waiting! Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, in March of 2023. Waiting for him alongside Louise are his father and mother, his sister Margaret (Schroeder) McIntosh, and his brother Jack Schroeder. Surviving are his children, Brad Schroeder of Grant, his daughter, Leah (Daniel) Churchill of Tampa, Florida, six grandchildren; Mitchell Kruithoff, Brittany (Robert) Pickup, Whitney Kruithoff (fiancé Mason Koster), Kaden Churchill, Zach and Hannah Schroeder, and three great-grandchildren, Alayna, Glyn and Connor Pickup, along with many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Jean (Roger) Harris. He was loved by
many and will be greatly missed.

Sally Ann Osborn - December 29, 1935 - December 04, 2023

Departed: 12/04/2023 (Grant)
Obituary Preview: Sally Ann Osborn passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023 at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond, VA. She was just a few weeks shy of her 88th birthday.
Sally is survived by her children, Greg Osborn (Ellen), Matthew Osborn (Dawn) and Maria Osborn Howard, her four grandchildren, Aaron Osborn (Audrey), Ashley Osborn Kinsella (George), Philip Howard and McKinley Howard, and her brother Elmer “Sam” Wolff. She is predeceased by her husband, Jim Osborn, and her brothers Arthur “Pudge” Wolff and Earl “Curly” Wolff.
Born Sally Ann Wolff during a snowstorm on December 29, 1935 in western Michigan, she never liked the cold. Moving to Virginia in 1981 with her husband’s job gave her a chance to escape the long winters in Michigan that she used to tolerate only if there was a trip to Florida planned in the middle somewhere. After Jim retired, they spent several years living in Virginia during the colder months and in Michigan during the warmer ones.
Sally worked briefly as a bank teller early in life, then later she worked as a part-time sales associate at a bridal shop. But her passion was being a homemaker and she would proudly name that as her profession. She cooked and baked extensively for her family, making bread from scratch and even taking cake-decorating classes so she could create extra-special birthday concoctions.
She loved creative projects of all kinds. She was an accomplished seamstress. She dabbled in oil painting. She rearranged furniture and changed decor so often that her husband joked that he felt like he came home from work to a new house all the time. The house was always spotless, to the point that a real estate agent once wrote “Mrs. Clean lives here” in a description of a home that Jim and Sally were selling.
When she wasn’t keeping up with the housework, she was in the yard tending to her plants and flowers. She especially loved roses, and at one point had a sizable rose garden. After she was widowed and condo living limited her gardening space, she took up bridge and enjoyed making new friends while playing cards.
Sally said in her final days that she was extremely grateful to have lived a wonderful life with a cherished husband and three healthy children, and was glad to have been given so many years to enjoy her grandchildren and welcome great grandchildren. She certainly loved and served her family well.
Visitation will be held at Fields-McKinley Funeral Home in Grant at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. and burial at Ashland Center Cemetery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and surviving family members. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of a person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing and provide information about funeral or memorial services.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or crematorium may offer assistance with writing the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and within 200-500 words. This allows for a brief summary of the person's life without overwhelming readers with too much information.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments, and can also spare loved ones from having to write it during a difficult time.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries. Many libraries also maintain microfilm records of past newspapers that can be searched manually.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections or edits can be made to an online obituary. However, printed obituaries in newspapers are typically final and cannot be altered once they've been published.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the newspaper or online platform. Some may publish immediately, while others may take several days or even weeks to review and post the obituary.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, poems, or lyrics can add a personal touch to the obituary and help celebrate the person's life.

Should I include the cause of death in an obituary?

This is optional and ultimately up to the family's discretion. Some people prefer to include this information as a way of raising awareness about a particular disease or condition, while others may choose not to disclose this detail.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an online obituary, contact the website or funeral home directly to request corrections. For printed obituaries, it may be more challenging to make changes, but you can try contacting the newspaper's corrections department.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable organizations or memorial funds that were important to their loved one. This can serve as a meaningful way to continue their legacy.

How do I write an obituary for someone who was private or had a complicated life?

This can be a sensitive topic. It's essential to approach the task with empathy and respect for the person's privacy. Focus on celebrating their positive qualities and accomplishments while being mindful of any sensitive information that may be best left unshared.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary online. Be sure to check copyright laws and regulations before doing so.

How do I share an obituary on social media?

Most online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link to share with friends and family.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically a brief announcement of someone's passing, often including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed biographical information and is often longer in length.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has no immediate family?

Absolutely! Friends, colleagues, or caregivers may choose to write an obituary as a way of honoring someone who didn't have immediate family members.

How do I handle multiple marriages or complex family relationships in an obituary?

This can be a delicate situation. It's essential to approach it with sensitivity and tact. Consider consulting with family members or friends who were close to the person to ensure that all relationships are acknowledged respectfully.

Can I include humor or lighthearted anecdotes in an obituary?

Yes! Obituaries don't have to be somber affairs. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.

What is the purpose of publishing an obituary online?

Publishing an obituary online makes it easily accessible to friends, family, and acquaintances who may not have access to local newspapers. It also provides a permanent digital record of the person's life.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! Some online platforms allow you to create multimedia tributes that combine text, images, music, and video clips. These video obituaries can be shared on social media or embedded on memorial websites.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

An obituary is just one part of preserving your loved one's legacy. Consider creating a memory book, scrapbook, or online memorial where friends and family can share stories and memories over time.
