Obituary Preview: Virginia Ann “Ginger” Thorne Etter , 78, passed away at her family home and farm of 57 years on April 16, 2022.  Born May 14, 1943 to Walter Edward Thorne and Sarah Louise McCoy Thorne in Oregon City, Oregon. She was one of 7 children.
Ginger grew up on Iowa Ave in Chariton, Iowa.  She married Jerry Carl Etter on June 25, 1960 in Chariton, Iowa. They raised 3 amazing children Bernard, Bruce and Christine.  Their love grew through their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many family, friends and neighbors.
Ginger seen to it no one ever left the family home hungry. She was very talented and always busy doing the following; cooking, baking, decorating cakes, paintings, photography, sewing, crocheting and most importantly hunting games, hunting mushrooms and going to the casino.  Her and Jerry absolutely lived to fish with family and friends.  They loved to spend time at their home away from home in Talmoon Minnesota, on Etter Road at their cabin.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Sarah Thorne, husband Jerry Carl Etter, son Bernard Carl Etter, brothers, Frank Thorne and Richard “Butch” Thorne.  Left to cherish her memories are her son, Bruce Edward Etter, daughter Christine K. Etter Keeler (John), brothers, Glen Thorne (Tyra) of Trenton, MO, William Thorne (Drew), sisters, Carolyn Thorne McFarland, Joyce Thorne Polo all of Chariton, Iowa, grandchildren, Jerry, Andrew, Leta, Rosa, Jena, Sara, Gizzy, Zachary and 10 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Ricky Paul Schramm - February 18, 1953 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Ricky Paul Schramm, 69, son of Donald Ervin and Mary Alice (Hilliard) Schramm was born in West Chicago, IL on February 18, 1953.  He departed this life on April 13, 2022 in Chariton, IA.
Ricky lived in West Chicago until 1960 when his mother moved to Chariton.  During his school years he returned to West Chicago and graduated from West Chicago High School.  Ricky enjoyed being a truck driver and later worked for a company that moved various buildings in the Chicago area.  Afterward he worked for his father at Schramm’s Body and Fender Shop.  During this time, he married Barbara Patton to which two sons were born, Ricky Jr. and Christopher, and adopted son Tommy.  The couple later divorced.  He found love again with Doreen Moldenhauer and had two more son’s, Bobby and Douglas.  After his father’s death Ricky returned to Chariton where he loved taking his boys fishing and having them involved in Little League.
He worked at the Chariton Machinery Auction and loved learning how to drive the various farm equipment.  He always wanted to be on a farm.  On Saturday nights you would find him at Reed’s Auction, helping and talking to people.  Later he enjoyed showing his 2001 Ford Ranger in various car shows, winning many trophies and awards.
Ricky was preceded in death by his parents, sibling Donald E. Schramm, Doreen Moldenhauer and his dog Jack Jack.
Survivors include his sister, Debra Graham of Chariton, sons, Thomas Reedus of Chariton, Rick Schramm of Batesville, IN, Christopher Schramm of Chariton, Bobby Schramm of Knoxville, IA and Douglas Schramm of Chariton.  Grandchildren Katelyn and Anthony Schramm of Clarksville, TN and uncle Larry Hilliard of Tucson, AZ. And a host of loving relatives and friends.
A celebration of life is currently pending.
Interment will be the Derby Cemetery.

Larry Weston Grove - January 23, 1940 - March 29, 2022

Grove, 82, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at his home in Perry, Iowa.  He was born on January 23, 1940 in Corydon, Iowa to Robert Roy and Lois Allene Grove.  Larry attended Corydon School until the 9th grade.  He later moved in with his sister and brother-in-law, Deloris and Paul Curtis.
Larry took a job as a construction worker, where he worked in California, Missouri, and Iowa.  He was married three times.  First marriage was to Roseanne Seamas to this union a daughter was born Wanda Jean (Hurley) Grove of California. His second marriage was to Sammie Marie Northcutt of Lebanon, Missouri, to this union two daughters were born, Samantha Jo Grove and Lois Allene Grove both of Lebanon, Missouri.  Third wife was to Evelyn M. Howell to this union two children were born Lareana Grove and Larry Grove Jr. both of Perry, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Roy and Lois Allene Grove, daughter, Samantha Jo Grove, wife Evelyn Grove, sisters, Deloris Curtis, Juanita Chamberlain, Nancy Askren, brothers, Robert Grove, Charles “Chuck” Grove, nephew Randall Grove.
Larry enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, watching John Wayne, Nascar, listening to Johnny Cash and other country favorites.
Left to cherish his memory is his 4 children, 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, family and friends. He will be missed dearly.

Burdette Harvey Werts - January 16, 1927 - March 28, 2022

Obituary Preview: Burdette Harvey Werts, son of Harvey Roger and Artie Olive (Lewis) Werts, was born on January 16, 1927, in Russell, IA. He passed away on March 28, 2022, at Corydon Specialty Care in Corydon, IA at the age of 95.
His family lived in Imperial, NE for 4 years from 1928 to 1932, before returning to Russell. He graduated from Russell High School in 1944. He then served in the Navy from 1945 to 1946. He married Lois LuVina LaFavre on June 20, 1948, at A Little Bit O’ Heaven in Davenport, IA. Together, they had one son, Brent Lee, born on June 1, 1954. Burdette’s adult life was spent farming. He started with his father in Lucas County, establishing their own farm in 1959 in Wayne County. Brent joined him in farming in 1975, and Burdette later shared the work with his grandsons and great-grandsons.
Over the years, Burdette served as a Union Township trustee, Wayne County FHA Board member, and was a faithful member of Millerton United Methodist Church. Burdette and Lois enjoyed attending Rathbun Country Music Theater for 35 years. They also spent 27 years wintering in Edinburg, TX, at Citrus Mobile Park. He enjoyed reading and watching Western Movies as well as joining friends for coffee at least once if not twice most days. In 2017 he moved to Homestead Assisted Living in Chariton.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Brent and Judy Werts of Chariton, IA; four grandchildren: Jana (Ryan) Rogness of Urbandale, IA, Brad (Bridget) Werts of Corydon, IA, Jayma (James) Sims of Burlington, IA, and Brian (Lauren) Werts of Urbandale, IA; eight great-grandchildren: Evan and Leona Rogness; Bryant and Braden Werts; Juliana, Jenessa, and Joella Sims; and Veronica "Ronnie" Werts; sisters-in-law Charlotte Werts of Fremont, NE and Deloris Werts of Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burdette is preceded in death by Lois, his loving wife of 66 years; his parents; in-laws Trace and Ethel LaFavre; sister Wilma and husband William Strait; brothers Dean and wife Ruth, Roger, and Dale; and sister-in-law Evelyn and husband Russell Mikesell.

Obituary Preview: Donna Mae Criswell was born January 30, 1932 to Elmer and Gladys (Scott) Forbes in Murray, Iowa.  She graduated from Murray High School in 1950.  She worked several different jobs throughout her life,     Hy-vee as an billing clerk, Walmart, Baptist School in Knoxville, Iowa and First Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa.  Donna was a loving and caring mother to her five children, Dan, Denny, Deena with Don Wetzel, David and Donovan with Don Murdock.  In her later years she married Edward Criswell whom passed away on November 18, 2006.
Donna was a long-time member of the Chariton Christian Church of Disciples of Christ. She loved to sing and play for funerals and weddings.
She peacefully passed away with family by her side on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Gladys Forbes, her husband Edward, her siblings, Marguerite (Gerald) Persels, Leo (Doris) Forbes, Mildred (Lloyd) Peppmeier and Kenneth Forbes.

Wanda D Gookin - July 12, 1930 - March 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: Wanda Dawn Fothergill was born July 12, 1930 in Knoxville, Iowa. Through her younger years her family moved to Melcher, Williamson, and Des Moines. As a young girl she developed her love of riding horses and all animals. She was a very proud graduate of East High School in Des Moines class of 1948. After high school she explored other places landing in Arizona before settling back in Des Moines working at the Bell telephone company and Hubbell Reality as a secretary.
In 1954 she married Roger Gookin and to this union three sons were born Michael Roger, Joseph Paul and Douglas Jay. During their married life they lived several places Des Moines, Russell, Melrose, Montrose, Colorado and finally Chariton. Wanda had several jobs each place they lived but when they moved to Chariton she started working at the Chartion Manor. First as a cook and then joining the activities department where she worked 34 years. She had a great love for the residents and considered them her family. She worked until the age of 80 and then she continued to volunteer for many more years. Wanda was always a worker. Raising big gardens and taking care of kids, animals you name it.
Wanda was a founding member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Russell. A member of Russell Methodist Church and a member of Russell American Legion Auxiliary for many years. Most of all she loved her friends and family.
Left to mourn her loss are her children Mike (Mary) Gookin, Joe (Kellie) Gookin and Doug (Karen) Gookin. Her brother John Fothergill and sister Dalene (Jack) Mullins. Her grandchildren Heather (Ryan) Johnson, Chad (Britni) Gookin, Amber Heins, Emily (Tyler) Arp, April (Levi Clark),  Joe and Tyler Gookin
Her great grandchildren Addison and Hayden, Josh, Amber, Jordan, Skyler, Jocelyn, Paisley, Adrien and Lily and one on the way.
Her great great grandchildren Jayce, Shane, Raydon, Shah Kahn, Orion, Case and Maverick.

Mitchell "Mitch" Frank Grimes - February 07, 1962 - March 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Mitchell Frank Grimes, 60, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2022 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.  Mitch was born on February 7, 1962 in Knoxville, Iowa to Walter Vaughn Grimes and Audrey Yvonne (Byers) Davidson.
Mitch attended school in Chariton, Iowa.  In 1980, he graduated from Chariton High School.  Mitch stayed in Chariton, working at various factories and warehouses.  He was a proud father of two sons, Mason and Matthew Grimes.
Mitch was kind-hearted and generous person, he was always there for any one in need, especially for his family and friends.  He was always in good spirits, fun loving, and he would not let the little things get him down.  His laugh was infectious, he made sure everyone was laughing with him.  Mitch enjoyed rock and roll, like taking walks in nature, loved all sports. He liked to collect anything rare.
Mitch started having health problems, but he did not let that get him down.  He fought hard to stay healthy as long as he could.  Mitch was such a lovable person. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his father, Walt Grimes of Chariton, his son, Mason of Des Moines, his brother, Tony Grimes of Arizona, and sisters, Terry Halferty of Chariton, Joy Amos of Indianola.

Joyce Captolia Grove - September 29, 1938 - March 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Joyce Captolia (Gee) Grove passed away at her home on Friday, March 4, 2022, at the age of 83. She was born on September 29, 1938 to Gerald Gee and Pearl (Casey) Gee. She attended Painted Post High School. In 1962, she married Charles Richard Grove.
Joyce was a homemaker during her twenty years as a military wife. She was an excellent seamstress and quickly made any home, apartment, or quonset seem like a stylish retreat as she followed wherever her husband’s career took them.  They eventually settled in Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked for several years at Kmart overseeing receiving and later part time for the Sun Valley Lake water system at Sun Valley Lake, Iowa.
Upon full retirement, she and Chuck moved to Florida and enjoyed RV traveling, with yearly extended visits to family and friends in Colorado, Iowa, New York, and Texas. Family and friends were the most important aspect in life to Joyce. She stayed socially active through various clubs, weekly game gatherings, and volunteer work. She attended Bagdad United Methodist Church. She was an avid animal lover.
She is preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Charles Richard Grove, parents Gerald and Pearl Gee, son Randall Dean Grove, brothers Gerald Gee and Daniel Gee.
She is survived by daughter Debra (Jim) Young, daughter-in-law Susan Grove, grandchildren Shantel (Glennie) Nicholson, Justin (Sara) Grove, Alexis Joy (Gabriel) Roberts, six great-grandchildren, brother Thomas (Donna) Gee, and many loved nieces and nephews.
She will be missed and remembered as a compassionate, loving, and fun mother, grandma, sister, aunt and friend. She bestowed wisdom, beauty, and humor to all those who knew her.
Memorial service and burial are planned to be on July 16, 2022, in Chariton, Iowa at Fielding Funeral Home. Evelyn married Joseph Howard Sanders in Chariton, Iowa, 1944. To this union three boys were born, Jack, Joseph and Charles.  She worked as a school cook at Lucas and S.E. Polk school districts. Evelyn worked from 1953 and retired in 1975.  In their past time, Evelyn loved to dance. On April 4, 1982, Evelyn lost her husband.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Nellie Gwinn, her husband, Joseph Howard Sanders, her son, Jack Dean Sanders, her sisters, Ida Skinner, Opal Medaris.
Evelyn is survived by her sons, Joseph Sanders from Chariton, Chuck (Lois) Sanders from Apache Junction, Az, brother, Ronald Gwinn from Des Moines, her sister Judy Chapin from Monroe, nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren.

Douglas Rash was born June 24, 1951, to John F. and Margaret C. (Hager) Rash in Marshalltown, Iowa. He peacefully passed away at his home with family by his side. Doug brought three children into this world, Brandon, Melissa and Catherine.  He was retired from the Army after serving in the Vietnam War and lived in Chariton, Iowa till his passing. Douglas enjoyed watching birds and had several bird feeders.  He also had a green thumb and loved gardening.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Rash, his brother Donavon Rash.
He is survived by his children, Brandon Rash, Melissa Ellingson and Catherine Moreau, his siblings, Dwight (Janet) Rash, Daryl (Dixie) Rash, Darla (Doug) Rash and DaLene (Mark)Kahler.

Jack Eugene Boyd - August 27, 1937 - February 17, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jackie (Jack) Eugene Boyd was born on August 27th, 1937. The third son of Bill and Cecil (Kent) Boyd at a home east of Lucas. He passed away on February 17th, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s.
He attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Lucas High School.
On June 11th, 1955, he was united in marriage to Jean Crow and they were blessed with two children - a son, Gary, and a daughter, Cynthia.
They resided in Des Moines for a short while where Jack was employed. They returned to Lucas where Jack worked for Lucas County, Johnson Machine Works and operated a service station. In 1974 he had a car wash constructed in Lucas which he operated and serviced cars until his retirement in 2000.
Jack was a member of the R.L.D.S. church in Lucas until its closing, a member of the Lucas Fire Department, a member of the Chariton River Valley Tractor Club and a 50+ year member of Paul Revere Masonic Lodge #638. He, along with several other Lucas residents, organized the Lucas Centennial in 1968.
He enjoyed hunting, especially deer season with his brother, son, grandson, nephews and friend, Dwayne Ansley, in snow, rain or sunshine and hunting trips to South Dakota. He also enjoyed restoring older tractors with a preference to green John Deere. He enjoyed participating in parades and several WHO Iowa Tractor Rides until his health failed.
Jack never met a stranger, talking to everyone and anyone like he knew them all his life.
Jack leaves his wife, Jean, of 66 years, son, Gary, and Mary Beth Boyd and daughter, Cindy, and Steve Hoch. Six grandchildren Angela (Dave) Shinn, Nick (Kristen) Boyd, Stacey (Jason) Maddy, Natalie (David) Braun, Kayla (Brandon) Bond, Laurie (Mitch) Nielsen, and 21 great grandchildren, 2 sisters-in-law, Betty and Mary, brother-in-law, Dan Ward, and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edwin, Marvin, and Jerry and sister, Sharon.
His family meant so much to him. Jack was always willing to attend all their activities until his failing health. He will be greatly missed at all our gatherings.
May he rest in peace.

Norval James Lowe - May 06, 1933 - February 10, 2022

Obituary Preview: Norval Lowe died Thursday, February 10, 2022 at the Lucas County Hospital at the age of 88 years old.
Norval was born in Montezuma, Iowa, May 6, 1933, to  the parents James Lowe and James Gertrude Hutchinson.
Norval graduated from Grinnell high school in 1951, he was very active in sports and exceled  at basketball, was fortunate enough to go to state with the Grinnell high school basketball team.
Norval managed two grocery stores and was a editor of the Chariton Newspaper for many years. He was active in many organizations in Chariton.  Norval loved golf and you could usually find him in his spare time on the County Club Golf course.
In his retirement years he got to enjoy the love of golf with friends and family.  And he enjoyed a game of cards with friends.
Norval spent the last few years living at the Homestead in Chariton. He will miss his many friends there.
Norval is survived by  daughters, Cindy Vanderpol, Jackie Althof, Rawnene Shunk, and son, Rick Shunk, 13 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Norval was preceded in death by his parents, son , Steve Lowe, brothers, Duane Lowe, Sam Byers, Wayne Byers.
Norval will be missed.
A celebration of life for Norval Lowe will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Fielding Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to services at the funeral home. Leahdel Elaine Page - June 29, 1937 - January 28, 2022

Obituary Preview: Leahdel (Leah) Elaine Page, 84 years old, of Dallas Center, Iowa, has passed away and is now with her Savior.  After an 18 day stay at West Lakes Mercy Hospital, Leah was taken to Kavanaugh Hospice House and passed away on January 28, 2022.
Leah was born at Chariton, Iowa on June 29th, 1937 to Leonard and Mildred May of Derby, Iowa.  She worked as a nurse most of her life, first as an LPN and then as an RN.  She retired from Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. But more than anything, she was a loving and caring mother of five children, an aunt to many nieces and nephews and Grandma to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Leah is survived by her sons; Richard (Barbara) Roberts of Plymouth, MN, Mark (Misty) O’Leary of DeSoto, IA and James (Jessica) Page of Altoona, IA.  She is also survived by her brother, Dwaine (Sherry) May of Osceola, IA.  Leah is also survived by countless, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Leah was predeceased by; her son, Michael Bruce O’Leary and daughter, Robbin Lynne Welch.  Additionally, she was preceded in death by her Father, Leonard May, her mother Mildred May, stepmother, Audrey May, sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Dennis Morris.
Funeral services will be held at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton, IA on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.  Visitation will be that day from 10:00am until 12:00pm.  The service will start at 12:00.

Obituary Preview: Vickey was born on March 5th, 1949 in Knoxville, IA to her parents Richard and Patty Kerr. She spent her childhood in Knoxville, until she moved to Chariton with her family Richard, Patty, and Rick at age 12. She then met her lifelong partner Gregg at age 14. When she turned 18, Vickey and Gregg got married, with the plans to spend their life together forever, as they did. They started their family in 1972 when they had their first born Teri, and their second daughter Toni in 1974. Vickey had many health complications throughout her life, but that didn’t stop her from living it to the fullest. In 1996, Vickey received a kidney from her husband Gregg, as the first married couple in Iowa that was a perfect match for a transplant. She had many battles throughout her life, that being the most memorable. Vickey then spent the rest of her life giving her all to being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with not only her family, but her many cats as well. She will forever be remembered for her kind and caring soul, and her unconditional love. Vickey will be forever loved and missed by her husband, Gregg Dale, her daughters Toni (Kurt) McCullough and Teri (Shawn) Stone, grandchildren, Kelsey (Brett) Kimzey, Max Dale, Bobbi (Cullen) Evans, Emmit Evans, Mila McCullough, Lia Stone and Sophia McCullough, great-grandchildren, Averi, Luci, Kamron, Jax, Harper, Alvi, and one on the way, as well as her brother, Rick (Patt) Kerr.  She was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Patty (Brown) Kerr, and her beloved feline friend, Penny.  Memorials may be directed toward American Cancer Kidney Foundation.

She later went on to attend college at Westchester Community College in New York where she received her Associates Degree.  As education was very important to Janice, she was determined to receive her Bachelor’s degree and did so while working full-time.
Janice lived most of her adult life in Yorktown, NY, working as an accountant and raising two boys on her own, Travis and Ty Healey. Her family was very important in her life and Janice was a proud grandma of three granddaughters, Camryn, Quinn, and Maeve.  She also was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Yorktown.  Janice was very active in her church community.  She was faithful to the Lord and his teachings.
Janice was an avid gardener. Her hobbies were quilting and baking for her family.  She enjoyed going on walks and loved her cats, Jack and Mary as well as Travis and Ty’s childhood dog, Scotty.
She is survived by her two sons, Travis (Jennifer) Healey of Mahopac, NY, Ty Healey, her three granddaughters, Camryn, Quinn and Maeve Healey, and her two best friends, Christine Lazarus and Julie Moulic.  Janice will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Obituary Preview: Reatha Laverne Evans, 93, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022, at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa.  Reatha was born on May 2, 1928 in Hamilton, Iowa to Jacie Wayne and Mary Ruth (Swim) Pence.  She lived and attended school in Chariton, Iowa.
On June 11, 1944, she was united in marriage to Wendell Keith Gardner and to this union three sons were born, John Lee, James Alan, Michael Wayne.  On March 7, 1954, Wendell passed away suddenly.
On May 15, 1955, Laverne married Harvey Edward Evans, to this union  five children were born, Laura, David, Gloria, Mark and Paul. She and Harvey lived in Chariton and raised their big family.  Laverne was a stay at home mother raising her children was her number one priority.  She enjoyed working in her garden in the summer.  Laverne was an excellent cook, she liked cooking and baking for her family and friends.  No one left hungry when they would enjoy one of her meals.
Harvey and Laverne were married for 52 years before Harvey’s passing on March 5, 2007.  Laverne was a caring and loving wife and mother.  She always made sure everyone was taking care of and had what they needed. She went above and beyond helping anyone that was in need.
Laverne took her faith seriously and taught her family the word of the lord.  She was a member of the Christian Union Church.
Laverne was country. She loved country music, putting jigsaw puzzles together and cooking. Cross word puzzles and reading books. She was happy getting meals for her family and friends. Laverne was a special wife, mother, grandmother. She will be forever be remembered and missed by her family and friends.
Laverne is survived by her children, John (Gloria) Gardner of Chariton, Mike (Rita) Gardner of West Des Moines, Laura Thomas of Pella, David Evans of Chariton, Gloria (David) Durham of Pella, Paul (Marta) Evans of Chariton, her sisters, Donna Pfrimmer of Chariton, Rosemary Garrison of Des Moines, Norma Bosley of Des Moines, her several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, 2 great-great-great grandchildren and other family members left behind.

Karen A McDonald - October 14, 1939 - January 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Karen Ann Mc Donald, 82, passed away with her family by her side on January 1, 2022 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton, Iowa.  Karen was in Williamson, Iowa to Burdette and Ferne Masters.  She attended school at the Chariton High School.
On May 26, 1957, she was united into marriage to Charles Robert McDonald at the Nazarene Church in Chariton, Iowa. Last year they celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Karen and Bob moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she attended night classes and worked at Peter Pan Bakery for 2 years.  When Bob got laid off, they moved back to Chariton and bought a farm in 1963.  Bob farmed and drove a bus route and Karen worked at the Hy-vee as an accountant for 42 years. In 2001 she retired. After retirement, Karen and Bob opened their home to take care of her mother for the next 16 years.
Karen was faithful to the Lord and his teachings.  She was a member of the Bible Holiness Church in Chariton, Iowa.  Karen’s life was dedicated to the Lord.  She housed many pastors and missionaries who came through and others in need. She was the secretary of the Church for many years, Treasurer for 40 years and she also was the organist and/or pianist for many years.  She was also noted for her great cooking, which she loved to do.  Everyone loves her pies and cakes. She is especially known for her famous peanut clusters and for the popcorn balls that she would make and hand out to Christmas carolers each December.  She would send meals out to anyone in need.
Karen was a giving and humble person.  Only the Lord knows how many people that she and her husband Bob have helped in many ways.
She was a wonderful pianist, Karen and her husband Bob would have friends, one especially, Floyd Storm, and family over to play and sing for hours.  One time Bob went to Russell to get a used piano and when they came back through Williamson, Floyd Storm sat in the back of the truck, he sang and played that piano as they passed the tavern.  They had so many joyous times serving the Lord and praising him.  Karen was a gift to all that knew her.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Burdette and Ferne Masters, brother Terry Masters and infant sister, Marilyn.
She is survived by her husband Bob McDonald, brothers, Rodney (Marilyn) Masters of Chariton, Iowa, Lanny (Linda) Masters of Humeston, Iowa, Danny (Becky) Masters of Williamson, Iowa, sister-in-law, Donna (James) Schneiber; along with many nieces and nephews.
Family and many Friends have been touched by the life of Karen McDonald.  She will be greatly missed.

Obituary Preview: Patricia Evans, age 96 of Lucas departed this life on December 27, 2021 at Chariton Specialty Care.  Patricia Louise Pollitt was born on March 4, 1925, to Pauline and Morris Pollitt in the little town of Lucas, Iowa. Her family moved to Amelia, Ohio when she was 9 months old. They lived with her Grandma and Grandpa Pollitt until moving back to a farm home in Lucas in 1939. She graduated from Chariton High School in 1943. Following high school, Pat worked in the office of Johnson Machine Works in Chariton, J.C. Penny in Chariton, and the Internal Revenue Service in Des Moines. Pat was united in marriage to Jay B. Evans on February 14, 1948 at the Lucas Presbyterian Church. Their Marriage was blessed with five children, Bill, Donna, Debbie, Jay, and Margie. Pat was an active member of the Lucas Presbyterian Church serving on the church council and teaching Sunday School. She was also on the Lucas Betterment Committee where she was treasurer for many years. Pat enjoyed serving others and helped with many community dinners and church functions.  Pat's greatest joy was being with her family. She especially loved the time spent with her grandkids and great-grandkids!  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jay B., brothers Frank and Ralph Pollitt, and daughter Margie.  Left to honor her memory are her son Bill and wife Lori Evans of Lucas, daughters Donna Evans of Ottumwa, and Debbie Evans of Chariton, son Jay Evans of Leon, grandchildren: Crystal, Nicole, Carmen, Bradley, Shannon, Jaqueline, Michael, and eight great-grandchildren.  Following the service, interment is in Chariton Cemetery.

On May 25, 1957, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Maxine James in Springfield, Oregon.  In 1962, Bill, Marilyn and their two children, Brent and Julie moved to Chariton, Iowa.  Here is where Kevin and Linda was born to complete their family.
Bill worked for several places in his life time, the DOT, Morton buildings for Frank Rogers and then handyman jobs he did on his own.  He built many decks and other contracting jobs around town.
Bill enjoyed taking care of his home, yard work, fixing things around his home and working in his garden.  His true passion was fishing, he held the state record for Big Mouth Bass in 1964.  Bill also enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting yearly. He spent a lot of time in his garage with each of his grandchildren doing wood working.  Bill love to share his knowledge and many stories with them.  He was always able to keep his family in laughter and show his love for each of them.  Bill enjoyed time with his family and friends.  He and Marilyn loved to travel to visit family in Colorado, Arizona and Oregon.   Bill also enjoyed NFL season by playing the Chariton football contest and watching the Chicago Cubs with Marilyn by his side.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bessie McBee, his sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Norbert) Norton, step-brothers Vance McBee, Bud McBee and son Brent McBee.

Ruth loved working genealogy, working tirelessly in her flower garden, and spending time with the family.
She is survived by her son Steven, grand-daughters, Lisa (Larry) Dyer of Chariton, Kari Cremeens of Corydon, Lori Baker of Corydon, 8 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Hollis and son Ronald.
At Ruth’s request there will be no service.  A private burial will be conducted at a later date in the Chariton Cemetery. Her presence in our lives will be forever be cherished and never forgotten
