Obituary Preview: Prescott – Daniel “Dan” Lamar Prescott, age 89, of Sanderson, Florida passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at the Douglas Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Florida with his loving family by his side. He was born in Fort Green, Florida on May 29, 1934, to the late Daniel Monroe Prescott and Lois Vivian Watson. On February 27, 1953, Dan married his best friend and love of his life Edith D. Padgett, and they were happily married for 71 years. In 1980, Dan and Edith relocated from Brandon, Florida to Sanderson, Florida and made it their forever home. Dan enjoyed a long career with the Steward -Mellon Company where he worked as a Tile Setter until his retirement in 1995. Dan was a member of Taylor Church; he enjoyed being involved and serving in the congregation. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles, and getting on his golf cart and going to visit with his neighbors. Most of all, he enjoyed spending precious time with his loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and children, Elizabeth Webb, Danny Prescott, and David Prescott.
Dan is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Edith D. Prescott; grandchildren, Lora (Lee) Schlachter, Lori Dampier, David Prescott, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Alysa Hall, Colby Hathcox, Dalton Hathcox, Karlie Hathcox; great-great grandchildren, Asher Daniel Hathcox, Ella Rae Hathcox, and Nevaeh Caroline Hathcox.

In the early 1980’s, Julie met her best friend and forever companion, Carroll William Rozier, and they were happily married. Julie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, gardening, shopping, cooking, and spending time at the beach. But most of all, Julie enjoyed spending precious time and making memories with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Willian Rozier; parents, J.D. and Mary Evelyn Hughes; and brother, James Earl Hughes.

Obituary Preview: Crews – Donna Elaine Rhoden Crews, age 74, of Macclenny, Florida passed away peacefully at W. Frank Wells Nursing Home on April 15, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She was born in Suwannee County, Florida on December 17, 1949, to the late William Martin Rhoden and Margaret Cecile Johnson Rhoden. Donna was a lifelong resident of Baker County and a faithful member of Soul’s Harbor Church of God for over 50 years. For the past few years, she has enjoyed worshipping and praising her Lord and Savior at Raiford Road Church. Donna met her best friend and forever companion, Jerry Warren Crews, while attending high school. She graduated from Baker County High School in 1967 and happily married, Jerry, on January 29, 1972. Donna was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother. Family was most important, and she always made them her number one priority in life. Donna enjoyed a successful career as a Secretary at Carroll Tire and served for years as a Bank Teller at Citizens Bank. Donna was filled with joy, had a servant’s heart, was always giving a helping hand. She knew it was better to give than receive, but she was very grateful when she was blessed by others. Donna was a member of the Baker Conservative Women’s Network for years. She enjoyed gardening, camping, and most of all, spending precious time with her family, making cherished memories. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 49 years, Jerry Warren Crews; and stepfather, B.T. Rhoden.
Donna is survived by her two sons, Warren Tyler Crews and Derek Scott (Becky) Crews both of Baker County, FL; brothers, Wayne (Cathy) Rhoden and Bruce (Wanda) Rhoden both of Macclenny, FL; sister, Brenda (Gerald) Dopson of Macclenny, FL; uncle, Carl (Peggy) Johnson of Macclenny, FL; grandchildren, Madison Crews, Dustin Haller, Madison Haller, Ashton Haller, and Kately Crews.

She was born in Taylor, Florida on September 22, 1942, to her loving parents, Johnny and Lettie Mobley Starling. Barbara was raised in Taylor and Glen St. Mary until she married and moved to Macclenny. Barbara graduated from Baker County High School in 1960 and worked at Karelle's Town Shop, Rodgers's Variety Store and Midget Burger in Macclenny early in life. She dedicated over 10 years as a Traffic Manager for Pantry Pride Stores and Super Value Stores, 9 years as Traffic Manager with Grimes Logistics, 4 years as an Office Manager for Martin and Greer Food Brokerage, 6 years as an Administrative Assistant at Northeast Florida State Hospital, then several years at Auto Crafters and CVS Pharmacy in Macclenny until her retirement in 2011. Barbara was most passionate about her family and loved going on cruises, traveling to the mountains, and fishing with her daughter, Joy. She also enjoyed attending Celebration Baptist Church where she was a longtime active member. Barbara was the Church Prayer Line coordinator where she received prayer requests and notified the Prayer Team to be praying for them. She certainly loved all her church family, but especially her Pastor, Elmer Crews and his wife, Nancy. Barbara was known for her love of country cooking. People loved her Chicken and Dumplings, Baked Beans, Banana Pudding and Chocolate Delight. Barbara was a treasure to her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sonja Joy Crews; parents, Johnnie and Lettie Mobley Starling; 2 sisters, Lizzie (Corbett) Starling Crews and Leona (Ray) Starling Parrish; and two brothers, Dorsey “ToeJo” (Jean) Everett Starling and George Ray Starling.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Joy Marlene Crews (Bruce) Ambrose of Macclenny, FL; granddaughter, Hannah Ambrose (Jordan) Hall; 2 great-grandchildren, Holden and Blayne; sister-in-law, Nancy Starling; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

John was born in Green Cove Springs, Florida on August 27, 1966, to the late Leon Hart and Dorothy Nowlen Hart. He was raised in Whitehouse and moved to Baker County after middle school. John enjoyed a long successful career as a Rod Buster specializing in concrete reinforcing ironwork. He was a longtime member of the local Iron Workers Union 597 in Jacksonville and recently resigned from Vallencourt Construction due to health issues. John had a good heart and was known for his kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand. He was family-oriented and loved spending time with family and friends. John enjoyed organizing his yard sales as well as hunting and fishing. John loved his country and was proud of his Southern Heritage. John flew his Confederate flag with honor and wore his Confederate colors daily. He was a true treasure, will be greatly missed, and was deeply loved. John was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Lee Wilson and Debra Hart.
John is survived by his son, J.D. Hart, II of Macclenny, FL; grandson, John Hart, III; brothers, Mike West of Jacksonville, FL and Leon (Beth) Hart of Middleburg, FL; along with several extended family members and friends.

She had a successful career as an Upholsterer at Rowe Furniture Company in Elliston, Virginia where she proudly served for over 30 years. Sharon made Baker County her home nearly 20 years ago to be closer to family. She enjoyed fishing and spending time with her loved ones, especially her great-granddaughter, Marley. Sharon was cherished, greatly loved, and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents.

While in school, she met the love of her life and forever companion, Donald A. Dietz, and they were happily married on September 14, 1952. Genie was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was known for her kindness, helping nature, and sweet feisty spirit. She loved being a mother and was thankful to be a Navy wife and stay home to raise her children. For years she helped be a babysitter/caregiver for her family and many others. More than anything, Genie treasured her family and cherished every moment she had with them. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Donald A. Dietz Sr; her daughter and her husband, Teresa & Paul Finton; and her son, Kenneth Dietz.
Genie is survived by her sons, Donald (Bev) Dietz Jr. of Elberton GA and Paul (Jacci) Dietz of Macclenny FL; her brother, James (Jeannie) Steele of Callahan, FL; along with 16 grandchildren and quite a few great & great-great grandchildren.

Rodney was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was a born-again Christian, a strong believer in his Lord and Savior, and Jesus was always number one in his life. Rodney was faithful, hard-working, a jack of all trades, and a provider for his family. He worked several years in construction and helped frame the Dames Point Bridge, drove a dump truck, and started his first career as a Truck Driver with Ray’s Nursery. Rodney was currently driving for Margo Garden Products in Jacksonville. When not working, he was spending precious time with his grandbabies and family. Rodney enjoyed being outdoors, and loved the peacefulness of nature and fishing. He was certainly a treasure to his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jennifer Nicole Siemering; brother, Robert Wayne Benton; and sister-in-law, Melinda Benton.

Ray met his best friend and forever companion, Maxine Rae Wrestler, in the early 1970’s and they were happily married in 1976. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather who loved his family dearly. Ray was mission minded, a visionary, and was known for his childhood storytelling. He was an antique gun collector who enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing, and hunting. More than anything, Ray enjoyed spending time with his family and his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 29 years, Maxine Rae Wrestler Crawford; former wife and mother of his children, Marylou Bazemore; daughter, Lueann Patricia Crawford Grosse; and sister, Alice Crawford.

In 1946, Pearlie married her best friend and forever companion, Harold Taylor. They enjoyed 51 amazing years of marriage and made many wonderful memories throughout the years. Pearlie had a successful career at Northeast Florida State Hospital in their Dietary Department and was known by her family and friends for her “Famous Biscuits.” More than anything, she loved her family, spoiling her grandbabies, and family gatherings. Pearlie was an avid NASCAR racing and Miami Dolphins fan who enjoyed canning, gardening, and fishing. Pearlie loved life, lived to the fullest, and will be deeply missed. Leonard was a lifelong resident of Baker County and enjoyed working at Ed Fraser Memorial Hospital while attending school. He graduated from Baker County High School in 1966 and shortly after started working for the State Road Department and then was a Corrections Officer with Union Correctional Institute for 25 years until his retirement in 1995. Leonard enjoyed his career and was proud to serve in the prison system. He met his best friend and forever companion, Vera Ann Sapp, while in high school and they were married on September 8, 1968. They shared 48 amazing years together and made many great memories. Leonard was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family was certainly most important, and he valued the time he was able to spend with them. Leonard enjoyed NASCAR racing; Chase Elliot was one of his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed shooting guns and attending Road to Calvary Church when he was able. Leonard was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera Dinkins; sister, Hazel Walker; and brother, Hayden Dinkins.

Shortly after school, he started his long and successful career as an Insulator with Local #13 in Jacksonville where he served for 30 years until his retirement. Mark loved the simple pleasures in life. He loved being outdoors; fishing, farming, gardening, and tending to his yard, but more than anything, Mark was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandbabies. Mark was such a treasure, will be forever loved and deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Rachel Starling; and son-in-law, David Head.
Mark is survived by his loving children, James Randall Starling, Ashley Nicole Starling Head, and Seth Allen Starling; brothers, Kirk Starling, Earl Theron Starling, and Nathan Rodchester; sister, Sheri Chase; grandchildren, Tori Lynn, Lexi Starling, Nolen Head, and Reese Starling; great grandchildren, Isaac, Nova, and Hazel.

O’Neal Douglas Center for Caring with his loving family by his side. Clark was born in Ocilla, Georgia on February 10, 1935, to the late James Clark Mixon and Reba Hudson Mixon. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1953. Following school, he played baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers minor leagues as a pitcher for three years and then joined the United States Air Force in December of 1956. Clark retired as a Chief Master Sergeant after 26 years of service and then enjoyed another 21 years as a Project Manager with Computer Sciences Corporation in Washington, DC. Clark was very blessed. He had two amazing careers, 2 beautiful wives, 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. After the passing of his first wife, Clella Crawford Mixon, he married Jewell Raulerson Mixon on November 12, 2005. Clark was passionate about his family and loved spending precious time with them. He also enjoyed traveling on cruises and told family and friends the magic number of cruises is 37. He loved listening to country music and bowling. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Belton, Missouri Masonic Lodge #450, and was a longtime dedicated member of the Macclenny Primitive Baptist Church. Clark enjoyed daily fellowship and coffee with the local veterans at the Heritage Park Coffee Clutch. Many stories and friendships were made throughout the years. He was certainly an amazing man who will be greatly missed. Clark was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Clella Crawford Mixon; daughter, Lori Prouty; and brother, Gerald Mixon.

Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville with her loving family by her side. She was born in Baxley, Georgia on January 24, 1937, to the late Harold Boyce Seymour, Sr. and Mary Frances Davis Seymour. Sandy was raised in Jacksonville and graduated from Julia Landon High School in 1955. She loved music and was an active four-year member of the Landon High School marching and concert bands, as well as a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Club. Shortly after school, she married the love of her life and best friend, Robert Allen Conner, on August 26, 1955. They resided in Jacksonville for several years until making Baker County their forever home in 1972. Sandy enjoyed a long and successful career as a Stenographer at Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company for 6 years and then as a Secretary at Northeast Florida State Hospital for 25 years until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed life and surely lived to the fullest. In addition to loving music, Sandy loved reading, traveling with friends and family, camping in the mountains with Robert and children, playing cards, sewing and crocheting. She was a Girl Scout troop leader (Troop # 97) in the San Souci neighborhood on Jacksonville’s Southside and served for several years as a Girl Scout Neighborhood Chairman. She greatly enjoyed being a leader and counselor at the Girl Scouts’ Pottsburg summer camps and loved being a “Scout Mom,” supporting her daughters and son in all their Scouting activities. She was a dedicated member of Heritage Church and enjoyed attending, worshipping, and fellowshipping with her church family. More than anything, Sandy loved her family and enjoyed spending precious time with them. She was truly a treasure, could brighten a bad day, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 56 years, Robert Allen Conner; brothers, Richard Wayne Seymour and Harold Boyce Seymour, Jr.; sister, Faye Delores Seymour Pruitt; and brother-in-law, Euel Johnson.

She was born to Queen Esther Garrett Priester and William Thayer Priester on December 27, 1945, in Jacksonville, Florida. Betty graduated from Paxon Sr. High School in Jacksonville in June 1964, and was married for 59 years to Wayne Eugene Harper. She was an active member of the Polk City Community volunteering in schools and Little League activities for many years. In addition, Betty was a beloved school bus driver for the Polk County Schools for 35 years. She was sensitive to the needs of children but always maintained discipline so that her riders were safe. Upon her retirement, she was honored by the schools for her years of impeccable services. She was truly an unsung hero.

Obituary Preview: Ruby Jean Sparkman Hodges, 95, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 15th, while a resident of Tapestry Assisted Living Facility in Tallahassee, Florida.  She was born in Bonita Springs, Florida on January 5th, 1929 to the late William and Ethel (Sisk) Sparkman.  She lived most of her life in Miami, Florida, and also resided in Alabama, Colorado; Palm Bay and Macclenny, Florida throughout the years.  Ruby enjoyed a long successful career as a Telephone Operator with AT&T.  After 20 years of dedicated service she retired in 1992.  She enjoyed gardening, travelling, fishing, crocheting, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles. Many hours were spent at the dining room table playing Yahtzee, Dominoes, and Wahoo.  She loved watching westerns and could never pass up a casino.  Many trips were taken around the U.S. and Canada with her sisters and she enjoyed collecting spoons from every state.  Ruby never met a stranger and thoroughly enjoyed visiting with friends, neighbors and more importantly her family.  One was always welcome to drop by for a cup of coffee, a piece of pie and good conversation.  She was a true treasure and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Susan Downey; grandson, Joseph Henry Hodges; husband, Calvin William Hodges, Jr.; and sisters, Zelma Dame, Hazel Kepler, Thelma Liles, Annie Coyne, Betty Mobley, Mary Larson and Martha Pflug; daughter-in-law, Estelle Branconier-Hodges; and grandson-in-law, J. Obituary Preview: Mrs. Gayle Crawford, age 83, of Macclenny, Florida went home to be with the Lord on February 8th, 2024, at W. Frank Wells Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. She was born in Glen St. Mary, Florida on November 21st, 1940, to the late Hubert Combs and Geneva Reynolds Combs. She was a simple woman who lost her mom at the age of 12 and her dad was an Army man who never made it out of Korea. They lived a rich life in New York City Burrough of Flat-bush; taking in all the culture New York had to offer, ice skating in Rockefeller Plaza, and traveling anywhere subway by herself during a time when one could. She returned to Glen St. Mary to finish high school and marry her sweet-heart and best friend, Tommy Crawford. They were happily married on July 7th, 1957, and have enjoyed the past 66 amazing years of marriage. Gayle was a devoted wife, loving mother, homemaker and provider. She was talented with her hands. As a seamstress she made clothing for her family, she upholstered her own furniture, and even owned her own Florist making beautiful flower creations. Life in the mid 1960’s brought its challenges, but Gayle dealt with life and the trials with grace. A fond memory was loading her small kids up in an old cut down 1929 Model A Ford with only the back right brake to slow it down with while traveling from the backwoods of Taylor to buy groceries in Glen St. Mary. She was brave, known for her steady hand, and was seen taking off a rattlesnake’s head with a .30-.30 win one time. In the mid 1970’s, Gayle and each family member had their own dirt bike. They made many memories on weekend adventures in what was a great time to really experience Baker County. The late 1970's brought change when her youngins grew up and went out on their own first big adventure, white-water rafting in northern Georgia. Gayle loved the outdoors; fishing, hunting, and listening to a pack of hounds push a deer through a timber block. Her children’s friends knew there was always food on the Crawford table, words of encouragement by Gayle, along with helpful way's of life's daily features & situations. Gayle was graceful on roller-skates, achieved in ballet, and loved the opera. She became a "world traveler" in the 1990's with two lifelong friends, Mrs. Nina Wood's & Dr. Jean Dowling, traveling from Tahiti to Moscow, Russia and all points in between. Good places, beautiful countries and interactions with people, nationalities, and governments which created some amazing memories. They had much appreciation for history and even visited, Auschwitz, Poland, the nazi concentration camp that reflected man-kind, at his worst. More than anything, Gayle loved her family and enjoyed spending precious time with them. She certainly lived life to the fullest, was filled with such joy, and her legacy will live on through her family and the many people she touched throughout the years. Gayle was preceded in death by her parents; and great great- grandson, Brayden W. Bullard.

Thomas Johnson Gerard, Jr. - December 15, 1949 - January 29, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thomas J Gerard, Jr. (Tim) was born December 15, 1949, in Tampa, Florida and passed away January 29, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida following a courageous battle with cancer. Tim spent an idyllic childhood in Winter Haven, Florida (where he loved to explore local orange groves), and Maggie Valley, North Carolina. His family later moved to Jacksonville where he graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1967. He attended South Georgia State College, later graduating from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office police academy. After 32 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2004. As a young man Tim was a race car enthusiast, building his own car and racing at local tracks. He was a certified PADI diver and loved exploring shipwrecks off the South Florida coast. At an early age, Tim’s Dad often took him hunting in the Carolinas which began a lifelong love of firearms. As an adult, he enjoyed hunting a variety of wildlife in Osceola National Forest. He had an extensive knowledge of guns and knives, often sharing his expertise with others, especially during off duty work at Curry Thomas. Tim enjoyed riding motorcycles, owning many throughout his life. He and Pam spent many weekends riding Florida backroads along with friends Debbie & Robert Vaughan.
Tim is survived by his devoted wife Pam; loving Mother, Vivian Gerard; sister, Cindy (Jim) DeGrave; stepchildren, Jason (Rachel Hurner) DeLay, Sarah (Brandon) Ross and Rachel Crosby; Grandchildren, August Crosby, and Reece Ross; Nephew, Sam (Sarah Presley) DeGrave; Niece, Dara DeGrave; Sister-in-law, Paula (Trent) Hayes; and special friend, Amanda Meyers-Goerg. He is also survived by daughter Kim (Paul) Dionne.
Over the years Tim and his parents enjoyed a very close relationship and spent many hours in conversation. He was preceded in death by his beloved father Thomas J Gerard, Sr. (Tom) in May 2023.
During the last year of Tim’s life, he remained at home under the care of his wife along with Community Hospice of Northeast Florida-Lake City. Last week he was admitted to their unit at St. Vincent’s-Jacksonville where he received outstanding care and compassion.
Tim never complained throughout his challenging health issues, always remaining positive he would win his battle. He and Pam could always depend on neighbors (Tina & Robbie Davis, Kaylie & Blake Barrington, Mollie Johnson, Rose & Courtney Dunn, and Doug Coggin) for anything they needed. He was a loving husband and son, devoted stepdad and most importantly, Gus and Reece’s “G Pa.” Tim was dearly loved and will be missed forever.

Jerry met and later married his best friend and the love of his life, Alice Rose Buck, and they relocated to Tampa, Florida. Jerry and Alice resided in Tampa most of their married life, until they moved in 2002 to Glen St. Mary and made it their forever home. Jerry served a long career as an Industrial Mechanic for Southeastern Metals. When Jerry was not working, he enjoyed flying his model airplanes, racing his model boats, and most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Rose Buck Braddock; son, Daryle Braddock; and parents.

He was the family mechanic, builder, and loved remodeling classic cars. Dan was currently refurbishing his 57 Ford Fairlane. Dan was passionate about motorcycles and some of his best memories were made while riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. When not driving his truck or riding motorcycles he was watching wrestling or spending precious time with his grandchildren who he adored. Dan was a treasure to his family and friends and he will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Susan Grabill; and brother, Zane Dick.

She was born in Glen St. Mary on November 1, 1938, to the late Lewis Crews and Ethel Johns Crews. Violet graduated from Baker County High School in 1959 and shortly after started her longtime career as a Nurse’s Aide at Northeast Florida State Hospital. She proudly served at the hospital for 23 years, and for the Baker County Health Department in their janitorial department for 14 years until her retirement in 2000. Violet was a lifelong resident of Baker County and loved her community. In her younger years, she enjoyed weightlifting and has always enjoyed being outdoors. She was passionate about tending to her yard and her flower garden. Violet was an avid Florida Gator football fan who enjoyed watching Nascar racing, especially Dale Earnhart, Jr.. She also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles in her free time. More than anything, Violet loved spending time with her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; twins, Glenda Sue Collins and Walter James Collins; sisters, Sarah Howard, Susie Sigers, and Daisy Mattox; brothers, Baby Boy Crews and Willie Crews; and sister-in-law, Ann Crews and Betty Jean Crews; and nephew, David Sigers.
