Bruno Speth - January 06, 1938 - June 27, 2022

Departed: 06/27/2022 (Ridgewood)
Obituary Preview: Bruno Speth, 84, of Paramus, NJ, passed away on June 27, 2022. Devoted husband to Johanna Speth of Paramus, NJ. Perennial helpful father to daughters Christine Burkhardt of Middlesex, NJ, Monika Speth Richardson of Ridgewood, NJ, and "bonus dad" to Patty Daddona, of Raleigh, NC.  Loving and eternally patient grandfather — "Opa" — to Johanna and Brian Burkhardt, Graham and Wesley Richardson. Cherished twin brother of Robert Speth of South Africa, and Rita Mohr of Germany, dear brother-in-law of Netti Speth, widow of Edgar, who preceded Bruno in passing. Bruno will also be greatly missed his many other cousins, friends, and neighbors. Bruno was born in Grossheubach, Germany, and, at 24, immigrated to the United States for a better life — which he found. While living in New York City, he met his eventual wife, Johanna Weigang, a fellow German immigrant, and they soon settled in Flushing, Queens, to start their family. A few years later, the family moved to New Jersey, where they first lived in Sayreville and then Warren. In 2006, they settled in an adult community in Easton, PA, before moving to the BrightView community in Paramus in late 2021. Bruno spent almost all of his career working at and then running scrap metal recycling plants in the New York City area. To say he was handy would be a grand understatement. He had a life-long passion for fixing, creating, and building all manner of items, as well as collecting the many tools necessary for his projects. Bruno's love of repurposing and giving new life to things — in particular, heavy, metal ones —was renowned and among his many great qualities. His favorite pastimes included walking, gardening, listening to classical music, traveling around his adopted home country and the world, playing canasta with his wife, frequenting (and always working on) his family's cabin in Pine Plains, NY, and bird-watching, the latter of which involved a longtime running feud with devious, birdseed-stealing squirrels and deer.  The viewing took place Wednesday, June 29, at the Feeney Funeral Home, Ridgewood. Cremation private. As Bruno would've wanted, his pacemaker and the metal screws implanted in his feet after a fall years ago will be recycled.

Dorothy G Oswald - September 26, 1937 - June 07, 2022

Departed: 06/07/2022 (Ridgewood)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy (Dotti) Oswald, 84, died peacefully at home on June 7, 2022. The oldest daughter of John and Dorothy (Hough) St.Denis, she was born and raised in Plattsburgh NY and graduated from SUNY-Plattsburgh in 1959. She then taught Home Economics in Pearl River NY, where she met her future husband Dick, who was working at Lederle Laboratories there. Who wouldn’t have been fascinated by a pretty girl driving around in a sky-blue MG-A with the top down in the middle of winter, wearing a raccoon coat? Keeping to a plan she had made, after teaching for three years in Pearl River she indulged her interest in Japan by going there to teach on an Air Force base for a year, during which she traveled extensively in the far east. After returning she briefly applied her sewing expertise as “Meg Carter”, Director of Customer Relations for McCall’s Patterns in New York, and then she and Dick were married in 1964. After raising three children she went back to work as Director of the North-West Bergen chapter of the Red Cross, followed by eight years as Executive Director of the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce, where she increased membership substantially and helped bring to Ridgewood such amenities as outdoor dining, Downtown for the Holidays, First Night, and the Sunday Farmers’ Market at the train station. Finally, she spent three years as Marketing Director for the accounting firm Flackman, Goodman and Potter. She was also active in the Ridgewood Home and School Association and the College Club, and volunteered at the Center for Food Action. She was a faithful Catholic and parishioner of Mt. Carmel Church in Ridgewood. Dotti was always a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was well known for her energy, initiative and cheerful outgoing nature; and no accomplishment or act of kindness by a colleague or friend was taken for granted, but always elicited a hand-written thank-you note or phone call of appreciation from Dotti. She is survived by Dick, her loving husband of 58 years, with whom she shared their love of music, theater, good food, good books, and travel; daughters Elaine Oswald (Jesse Carroll) of Brooklyn, NY and Julie Woll (Bill) of Sinking Spring PA, a son David of Northvale, grandsons Sam and Jayden Woll of Sinking Spring, and sisters Elaine St. Denis of Ridgewood and Kathleen St. Denis of Plattsburgh NY. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 PM on Friday, June 17 at Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Ave. in Ridgewood. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 18 at 9:30 AM at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 1 Passaic St., Ridgewood, followed by a private burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, NJ. Memorial donations may be made to the National Institute for People with Disabilities of New Jersey (NIPD-NJ, providing group homes for the handicapped), 45 Whitney Rd., Mahwah NJ 07430 (https://www.yai.org/locations/new-jersey) or to the Sister Lucy Fund for the needy at Mt. Carmel Church

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements and other details. They can also be a therapeutic way for families to process their grief and share memories of their loved one.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or crematories may also offer assistance with writing an obituary as part of their services. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph. Online obituaries may allow for longer tributes or stories.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and photo(s).

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to take control of how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and achievements.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! While an obituary should be respectful, it's okay to inject some humor or personality into the writing to reflect the deceased person's spirit and character.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers may charge by the line or word count, while online obituary platforms may offer free or low-cost options. Funeral homes may also include obituary publication as part of their package prices.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow corrections or updates, while others may not. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary to avoid errors.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries may be published immediately or within a few hours, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on anniversaries or special occasions as a way to continue honoring your loved one's memory.

Are online obituaries permanent?

Most online obituary platforms archive notices permanently, allowing friends and family to access them for years to come. However, it's essential to check with each platform for their specific policies.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and meaning to an obituary, helping to capture the essence of the deceased person's personality or spirit.

What if I don't want to include certain family members in the obituary?

This can be a sensitive issue. It's generally recommended to include all immediate family members out of respect for their relationship with the deceased. However, if there are estranged relationships or other complex situations, it's best to discuss with other family members or a trusted advisor before making decisions.

Can I include charitable donations information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about memorial donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's legacy and support a meaningful cause.

How do I handle mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you discover errors in the published obituary. They may be able to correct it online or issue a correction in a subsequent print edition.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

If you're looking to honor someone who passed away in the past but didn't have an official obituary published at the time, you can still write one as a way to celebrate their life and legacy.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was LGBTQ+?

Yes! When writing an obituary for someone who identified as LGBTQ+, it's essential to respect their identity and use language that reflects their preferred pronouns and relationships.

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to include social media links or hashtags so that friends and family can share condolences and memories across different channels.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online obituary remains accessible over time?

Choose reputable online platforms that have a long-term archiving policy in place. You can also consider printing out copies of the obituary for safekeeping or creating a physical memory book with printed copies of online tributes.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself? Can I get help?

Absolutely! If you're struggling with writing an obituary or need guidance on what to include, consider reaching out to a funeral home director, hospice bereavement counselor, or professional writer for assistance.
