Bettie Henly Simmons - July 09, 1933 - November 14, 2023

Departed: 11/14/2023 (SALUDA)
Obituary Preview: Bettie Henly James “Betsy” Simmons, age 90, died at home on November 14, 2023. Born July 9, 1933, to W. Rodney and Bettie Woodward James, she lived in Mobjack until her father died when she was seven. At that time, she and her mother moved back to the family farm, Walboro, in Saluda. Betsy graduated from Saluda High School in 1951, and attended The College of William and Mary, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and graduated with majors in Mathematics and Chemistry. While in college, she worked at Langley Air Force Base. In 1956, she married Peter Montague Simmons, and they lived in several states before settling in Newport News in 1962 and then returning to Walboro in 1973. Before becoming disabled from cancer in 1992, Betsy was very involved with the Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church and helped with the Cemetery Committee. She was a member of the Urbanna Library Committee and worked to fund and to physically move the contents in the Urbanna Library from the Old Tobacco Warehouse to its current location. Betsy co-authored the book “Historic Buildings in Middlesex County Virginia, 1650-1775.” She was also on the Middlesex County Cemetery Survey Committee and researched and located numerous old cemeteries and gravestones in the county for the book “Cemeteries in Middlesex County Virginia.”
While she taught math, chemistry, and physics in various local schools, her heart belonged to the students at Middlesex High School. She could be found cheering on her Chargers at all sporting events, but she especially loved watching the basketball teams, as she had played basketball in high school. In track season, she could be found timing events at home meets. During football season, she was always watching or listening to UVA football on the radio while raking leaves.
Betsy lived the years she was disabled with grace, courage, and dignity, and she never lost her sense of humor nor her ability to calculate math and physics problems in her head. She was one of the most knowledgeable individuals regarding the history of Middlesex County.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Page (John), step grandson Chad Page (Megan), and her great granddaughter Margeaux Page. Over the years, her caregivers became family, and she was especially grateful for Beverly White, Barbara Carter, and Brenda Cordle for their years of help. In addition, Andrea Adams, Heather Wright, and Jenny Williams became invaluable. The family would also like to thank Heather Fochtmann, Angela Overstreet, and Taylor Miller of Riverside Hospice.

Alice Wielich Caldwell - October 17, 1922 - September 21, 2023

Departed: 09/21/2023 (SALUDA)
Obituary Preview: Alice Marion Wielich Caldwell passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023, in Yarmouth, Maine surrounded by her loving family. She lived a remarkably full life for nearly 101 years and will be forever remembered by her family and friends for her exceptional kindness and boundless energy.
Alice was born on October 17, 1922, to Marion Morrison and Ludwig Wielich. She grew up in Mountain Lakes, N.J. during the Great Depression. Responding to the demands of World War II, Alice enrolled at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. She graduated with a Nursing degree, becoming a licensed registered nurse in 1944. While attending nursing school, Alice met Bill Caldwell on a blind date — a date that led to their wartime wedding and a remarkable 78-year marriage.
After Bill’s honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II, he and Alice were among the earliest homeowners in Levittown, N.Y. After the birth of their last daughter, they moved to Larchmont, N.Y. and, shortly thereafter, to the house they designed and had built in Laurel Hollow, N.Y. Upon Bill’s retirement, they headed south to Hartfield for a glorious 38 years. At age 94, Alice and Bill relocated to Maine to be near their daughter Kim.
Although Alice worked as a visiting nurse, she was above all a homemaker — in the fullest sense of the word. Her principal commitment was to her husband, children, and grandchildren to whom she brought endless love, kindness, and an unfathomable level of energy. Whether it was supporting Bill’s many hobbies, helping with school projects, or leading Girl Scout cookie drives, Alice tirelessly guided and cheered on her family. Alice’s welcoming personality meant the house was often a magnet for her daughters’ friends and boyfriends, even those few for whom she lacked enthusiasm.
After her daughters married and had families of their own, Alice treasured the grandchildren’s visits, spoiling them with sweets and multiple trips to Busch Gardens. She was known to impart her wisdom, mostly unsolicited, with her favorite sayings: hard work pays off; waste not, want not; and busy hands are happy hands.
Alice was an exceptional caretaker, extending to all the same compassion that led her to nursing school. Sick children received an undue amount of attention, orphaned baby birds were raised in shoeboxes, thirsty turtles discovered bowls of water set out in the garden, stray cats found daily food, and before rabies was an issue, raccoons feasted on stale bread tossed out to them. She loved wild animals, particularly the songbirds she tirelessly tried to lure to her feeders in Maine.
Alice pursued many interests while homemaking and caretaking. During their honeymoon in Williamsburg, she and Bill discovered what was to become their life-long passion: Colonial American architecture, gardens, and furnishings. The hours they spent designing, building, and landscaping their colonial homes in New York and Virginia brought them immense joy and satisfaction.
Music was a mainstay of Alice’s life. Her mother was a professional harpist, and her father was part of Manhattan’s classical musical scene, representing noted European artists. During high school, Alice was known for her musical talents, singing in school productions, and performing on both piano and violin. She had a beautiful alto voice and sang in numerous church choirs, even soloing in Messiah performances. Late in life, Alice joined the chorus at her retirement community and took up the Celtic harp.
Alice loved to party. Whether it be with family, friends, or new acquaintances, Alice delighted in any and all social occasions. She had a widespread reputation for being a gracious and generous hostess, with the Caldwell’s annual Chesapeake gathering of Ocean Cruising Club sailors becoming a “can’t miss” event. Sailors from around the world planned their itineraries so they could attend the fall party, dropping anchor in the Piankatank to join in the festivities. Invariably, the Broadway show tunes would start on the piano with Alice’s singing leading the way.
Unknown to many was Alice’s self-discipline. She kept a diary her entire life, recording her daily activities, accomplishments, and gardening observations. Recently, Alice was thrilled to revisit her huge scrapbook of letters, corsages, ticket stubs, and other memorabilia she had made from the years she and Bill dated. Not only did her scrapbooks and photo albums reflect her self-discipline, but she also displayed remarkable commitment to even the most mundane, boring activities. No job was too tedious or painstaking for Alice. The end result was that Alice’s homes ran like well-oiled machines.
Alice possessed a deep passion for gardening, and to say she had a green thumb is an understatement. She not only enjoyed tending to her beautiful perennial and formal colonial boxwood gardens, but she also tagged and nurtured the native flowering plants found in the wooded acres surrounding their homes. Even in her Bay Square assisted-living apartment, Alice was able to coax her many orchids to thrive and rebloom. She also provided weekly fresh flowers for each table in the community dining room. Sharing these arrangements brought her great joy and were much appreciated by the residents and staff. Alice formed deep bonds with the assisted living staff, and her family is forever grateful for their loving care and support.
Alice is survived by her daughters, Anne Caldwell (Peter Elzer), Jeanne Caldwell, and Kim Caldwell (John Lambert); grandchildren, Lee Marchalonis, Elizabeth Elzer, David Elzer (Pamela Cabrera), Emily Lambert, Deirdre Lambert, Julia Lambert, and William Raudenbush. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and her granddaughter Alice Raudenbush, her namesake. On her husband Bill’s 100th birthday, Alice welcomed her first great-grandchild, Casper Elzer.
A memorial service celebrating Alice’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield.

David Hynes Kellar - January 24, 1963 - August 13, 2023

Departed: 08/13/2023 (SALUDA)
Obituary Preview: On A cold day in January 1963, David Hynes Kellar (Sr.) was brought into this world by his now deceased parents, Dorothy and Paul Kellar. He was raised on the shores of the Rappahannock River at Jamaica, VA with his siblings/survivors, Paul R. Kellar, D. Kathleen Kellar, William M. Kellar (Stacey), Helen M. Kellar, and C. Patrick Kellar (Suzie). In the wee hours of August 13, 2023, David left this world after suffering from ALS (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Cindy Miles Kellar and children, Rachel E. Kellar Follin and David H. Kellar, Jr. (aka DJ) (Felicia) and DJ’s and Felici’s combined children, Emily, Aiden, and Madison. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. David is predeceased by his stepson, Nathan Price, and survived by Nathan’s son Tyler.
David loved photographing and being in nature and the outdoors, spelunking, fishing, golfing, and Ocracoke Island, NC. His “quiet” place was on the riding lawn mower cutting grass. He adored his grandchildren and with them was when he was most likely smiling. He was gentle, kind, never met a stranger, and loved to talk.
David was a member of Masonic Lodge #83 in Urbanna, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Post #8356 in West Point, and Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad (before it’s demise). He served in the US Army for fourteen years as a Combat Engineer. When he separated with an Honorable Discharge from the Army, he was a Staff Seargent and had received numerous decorations, awards, and citations. He served in combat during Desert Storm in 1990-91, which apparently triggered the ALS from exposure to toxins. Following the Army, David was employed by the Middle Peninsula Regional Jail, Peusmasend Creek Regional Jail and the Bay Design Group.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehabilitation Center in Mathews for their patience and wonderful care of David. With a special thanks to Lynne Callis. Also, thanks to Riverside Hospice and the Veterans Hospital in Richmond.
A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at 2 PM on October 8, 2023 at Urbanna United Methodist Church in Urbanna VA. The Reverand George L. Morris will be officiating. In Lieu of flowers it is requested that donations be made to an ALS support or research group of your choice. Help stamp out this devastating disease. Betty being the social butterfly that she was, was always up for a party, especially with good friends, good food and of course sweets. She enjoyed eating out whenever possible especially at Chick-fil-A. As a Christian conservative, Betty loved keeping up with current events and enjoyed lively conversations about politics throughout her life. She was active in her church from a young age throughout her adult life. She was blessed with wonderful neighbors and friends that she met while living in Gloucester with her daughter and many four-legged fur babies. When recently asked about her life, she said she had a fabulous life with no regrets. Joy now fills her spirit as she is united with her beloved husband and mother.
Claudia would like to thank the entire staff at Riverside Convalescent in Saluda, especially the aids, nurses and Hospice people for being so kind to her mother during her two month stay there. They looked after her every need and did as much as they could to make her as comfortable as possible. They were indeed her “angels”.
