Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we gather here to bid a farewell to a remarkable man, my father, Lou. As I stand before you, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed by the legacy he leaves behind and the impact he made on our lives. Dad was at the helm of our family, embodying the values and attitudes of the silent generation. But to truly understand who he was, we must appreciate the generations that shaped him, from the 1920s to 1940s silence to the baby boomer mob and on to Generation X.

At the core of Dad's character was discipline. He was a man shaped by the impacts of war, facing adversity as a young teen. Despite the hardships he endured, he possessed an unwavering work ethic, working two jobs and pursuing an education simultaneously. He was a designer, builder, and maintainer, seamlessly blending his personal and professional life. His resourcefulness knew no bounds, repurposing bits and pieces to create new inventions and repair what others deemed irreparable. The sheer volume of his "treasures," totaling six cubic meters, serves as a testament to his ingenuity and determination.

Contrary to what one might expect, Dad was not afraid of change. In fact, he embraced it, becoming an influencer, enabler, and adapter throughout his 88 years. Whether it was embracing new technologies, like bringing home a cutting-edge television set long before anyone else had seen it, or navigating the ever-changing world around him, Dad showed us the importance of embracing change with patience and grace.

However, there were two exceptions when it came to change. Firstly, the accumulation of "gold," as Dad called it, or what some might refer to as hoarding. Dad found it challenging to let go of old things, often holding onto items long past their prime. To us, the younger generations, it is unfathomable to continue using outdated and inefficient items when newer ones are readily available. As we pack up his belongings, we find brand new fry pans and kettles waiting patiently, untouched, in the cupboards, a symbol of his steadfastness.

The other area where Dad resisted change was his palate. He was a man of simple tastes when it came to food, uninterested in spices, garlic, or fancy seasonings. Lemon pepper was as adventurous as he would go. If you wanted to see him flinch, simply suggest adding mayonnaise to a perfectly good sandwich. Dad's love for the familiar and his aversion to change was evident in these moments, endearing quirks that made him who he was.

Tinkering, tailoring, and soldiering – these three words encapsulate the essence of my father. He was a master tinkerer, able to fix just about anything with his engineering solutions. His ability to resurrect and transform inspired me, and his patience in teaching me these skills shaped my own self-sufficiency.

His love for tinkering extended to his collection of bits and pieces, strewn across our home in a manner only he understood. Dad wasted nothing, and I can almost picture him now, watching from above, a touch annoyed at my attempts to organize his cherished hoard. But perhaps, deep down, he's smiling, content in knowing he no longer has to tackle the job himself.

When it comes to tailoring, Dad took on two roles. First, he was a coach and mentor, guiding me through the challenges of life and helping me find my path. His belief in me knew no bounds, demonstrated when he signed the documents to allow me to pursue a career in the Royal Australian Air Force as a Telecommunications Technician, breaking barriers for women in both my life and my career.

But it wasn't just in the professional realm that Dad tailored his support. He was always there for my personal challenges as well, going above and beyond to ensure I had the opportunities I deserved. His feminist spirit, though perhaps unbeknownst to him, shone through as he fought for my inclusion in a TAFE course dominated by men, ultimately leading to my success and paving the way for those who followed in my footsteps. Dad's dedication to removing barriers and his unyielding support have left an indelible mark on my life.

On the lighter side of tailoring, we cannot forget Dad's infamous collection of safari suits. Though they may be considered a fashion faux pas now, they served as everyday armor for him, providing comfort with their practicality. In the late '70s, during a visit from a Chinese film crew documenting the life of an average Australian family, the suits proved to be quite the hit, albeit for reasons he may not have anticipated. Dad's trendsetting nature, even unintentionally, earned him recognition and endeared him to those around him.

Throughout his life, Dad faced countless challenges, from broken vertebrae to life-threatening health conditions. But he never faltered. His strength and resilience were apparent as he battled through each obstacle and supported us in our own journeys. Even in the face of enormous personal challenges, Dad never hesitated to stand beside us and fight alongside us.

And so, we come to the end of this eulogy, a tribute to a man who was not just my father but also my best friend. My appreciation for him knows no bounds, and the void left by his absence can never be filled. I am eternally grateful for the unwavering love and support he provided me, helping me navigate the complexities of life and emerging unscathed. Dad's impact on our lives will forever be remembered, and his legacy will live on through us.

As we bid farewell to Lou, let us celebrate the life he led, the challenges he overcame, and the love he shared with all of us. May his memories guide us through the darkest days and serve as a reminder of the strength we can find within ourselves.

And now, I pass the torch to my sister Sam, who will share her own reflections on the incredible man our father was.

Thank you.
