Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - Diane Marie Walker, age 82, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday, March 18, 2024, at UP Health System - Marquette, in the loving, comforting care of her family.
Born September 4, 1941, in Marquette, the daughter of Vincent Bernard and Ernestine Mary (Versailles) McCarthy, Diane was raised on Blemhueber Street in South Marquette. When she was in the middle of her junior year at Bishop Baraga High School, the family moved to St. Ignace where Diane finished her high school education, graduating in 1959 from LaSalle High School. It was in St. Ignace that Diane met the love of her life, Ronald Walker, and together the couple was united in marriage on October 15, 1960 in St. Ignace. Diane attended college and was employed as a dental assistant for a time. Ron and Diane made their home in St. Ignace, and when their children were older, she worked as a telephone operator with Bell Telephone. She then joined her husband in partnership with Walker Furniture in St. Ignace. Throughout the years, the couple approached life not only as a married couple and business partners, but as best friends. In 1975, the couple relocated to Marquette and founded Walker Furniture which was located at the Crossroads location. There, they supplied their customers with quality furniture, decorating advice, and sound service, until their retirement in 1996. In their leisure Diane and Ron spent ten years wintering in Florida and traveling to every state in the union, with the exception of Alaska and Hawaii. Diane was a devout Catholic who lived her faith and was a member of St. Peter Cathedral. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and on her last St. Patrick’s Day was presented an Irish dinner by daughter, Rhonda, and a glass of Guinness, and then quietly entered eternity later the following day. Diane was a great cook who always had sweets available for family and friends, and kept all her friendships throughout the years, a wonderful circle of friends she treasured. However, her greatest and enduring passion was her family. The children, grandchildren, and especially, Ron, brought her the greatest joy and fulfillment.
Diane is survived by the love of her life for 64 years, Ron; her children, Rhonda Walker-Winter, Dennis (Joan) Walker, and Colleen (Tim) Sova; her grandchildren, Benjamin (Amanda) Winter, Vincent Winter, Madilynn (Kirk) Adikes, Steven Walker, Joseph (Shelly) DeClark, Libby DeClark, Haley (Ross) Becker, and Haden Sova; great-grandchildren, Avery, Everly, Taylor, Hunter, Parker, Jagger, and Henry; brothers, Dennis McCarthy, Bob (Kristine) McCarthy, Rick (Joan) McCarthy, and David McCarthy; brother-in-law, David (Nancy) Walker; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. John B. Ashby - April 18, 1937 - March 11, 2024

Departed: 03/11/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - John Ashby passed away in the early morning hours of March 11, 2024, at the Trillium House in Marquette, Michigan, after a long illness.
John graduated from Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana, after which he joined the Air Force and served for four years. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he enrolled at Western Michigan University where he discovered his love of learning and earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with honors. He subsequently received a master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan, after which he worked for a time as a Ford Foundation Intern at the Michigan State Senate. He next received a full scholarship to Notre Dame which made it possible for him to pursue and complete his Ph.D. in Political Science with an emphasis in constitutional law.
John joined the faculty at Northern Michigan University in 1969 where he established a reputation as a highly effective member of the Political Science Department. He retired in 2001 after 31 years of service. The quality of John’s teaching and advising is reflected in the flow of unsolicited laudatory comments from his former students who have gone on to have successful careers as teachers, lawyers, judges, elected officials, public administrators and leaders of nonprofit organizations.
While John enjoyed creating an irascible public image, his students and the people who knew him well recognized that he was really a compassionate, caring and community spirited person. His work with Bay Cliff Health Camp’s Notre Dame Summer Internship program, the support and assistance he provided to indigent and elderly individuals, and his generous contribution of time and energy to many other local groups was truly commendable.
To paraphrase the lyrics of one his favorite songs, John Ashby “did it his way”. He will be sorely missed by those who knew him.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith Reyniers Ashby, his son Caleb, his daughter Luci, his sister Aileen Kaye Wathen, his sister-in-law Dixie Ashby, his extended family and a host of friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas Ashby.
John’s family thanks the exceptional and caring staff at the Trillium House, the late Dr. Huffman, Dr. Acharya and staff, the Marshfield Marquette Clinic team, and UP Home Health and Hospice, all of whom provided compassionate and professional care throughout his illness.

Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Hamalainen - November 12, 1931 - March 08, 2024

Departed: 03/08/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Hamalainen went home to be with her Lord and Savior and the lover of her soul on March 8, 2024.
Juanita May Green was born on November 12, 1931, in Marquette, Michigan, to Ellen “Nellie” Marshall and Thomas Green. However, at just 15 months old, her parents divorced, and for reasons unknown, she was placed in the Holy Family Orphanage in Marquette, where her name was changed to Elizabeth Ann. Life in the orphanage was bleak and frightening, as she endured and witnessed abuse for the next 12 years. She briefly returned to live with her mother, enduring impoverished conditions in a home without electricity or running water, and facing domestic violence from her stepfather. Eventually, she was placed in a Catholic girls' home and later transferred to a girls' reformatory at the age of 15. These experiences of institutional abuse and abandonment by her family fueled her growing anger and rebellious nature.
At 19 years old, she found herself pregnant and was sent to Lower Michigan to deliver her baby. However, upon giving birth, she was denied the chance to hold or even glimpse her newborn daughter. A hospital staff member informed her that the baby was ill and couldn't be taken home. Faced with a daunting choice, she had to either relinquish her baby for adoption or cover the entire hospital bill for her care. Heartbroken and without options, she was compelled to give up her daughter, never having the opportunity to lay eyes on her.
As her anger and rebellious spirit intensified, she conspired with her brothers to ensnare military men, leading to physical harm. Consequently, she received a three to five-year sentence in the Detroit House of Corrections for Women. Incarcerated, her anger consumed her, resulting in frequent conflicts and prolonged periods of isolation. However, during a psychiatric evaluation, a pivotal question prompted her to confront the deep-seated trauma from her past. This marked a turning point in her life, igniting a desire for transformation. It became apparent that a divine intervention was at play in her journey.
Upon her release from prison, Betty found love with Bob Hamalainen, whom she married. Bob, a talented musician, encouraged Betty to learn the drums, and together they formed the nightclub entertainment act "The Betty Hamm Duo," touring the country for many years. Blessed with two children, Theresa and Tony, their lives took a transformative turn when they attended church and were introduced to the gospel and accepted Jesus as their Savior. From then on, Betty's life revolved around serving the Lord. She fearlessly shared her testimony of transformation, engaging in various church activities such as prayer meetings, Bible studies, prison ministries, and television evangelism, while also aiding individuals in overcoming lifelong addictions. For over 53 years, Betty dedicated herself faithfully to the Lord, becoming a skilled preacher and teacher of the Gospel. As an ordained minister, her home became a sanctuary for those seeking prayer and ministry.
Before her passing, God orchestrated a reunion with her first daughter, Elizabeth, facilitated by DNA testing. Their reunion was filled with overwhelming love and tears of joy.
Betty is survived by three children: Elizabeth (Kevin) Mead, Theresa (Kenneth) Oja, and Anthony Hamalainen. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Anne Jones, Jessica Oja, Amber (Zachary) Hunter, Kenna Oja, Zachary Oja, Amanda Higgins, Kurt (Renea) Hamalainen, David Larson, Nathan Larson, and Naiomi (Kyle) Henry. Additionally, she leaves behind great-grandchildren: Ethan Jones, Ava Jones, Harlow Hunter, Presque Hunter, Knox Oja, Greenlea Oja, Ozzie Oja, Jordan Hamalainen, Taylor Havican, Zoe Higgins, Andre Hamalainen, Aden Hamalainen, Lilya Hamalainen, Samantha Larson, Cory Hernandez, Breanna Larson, and Nathaniel Larson. Furthermore, she is survived by great-great-grandchildren Mateo Boyle, Artie Hernandez, Christian Hernandez, Oliver Aspin.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hamalainen.
A celebration of Betty’s life will take place at New Life Church on Saturday, March 16th. A viewing will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., followed by the service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at Northland Chapel Gardens at a later date. Pallbearers include Zachary Oja, Kurt Hamalainen, Amber Hunter, Jessica Oja, Ethan Jones, Zachary Hunter, Pastor Paddy Palomaki, and Pastor Lew Pizzala.

Charles B. King - April 11, 1932 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - Charles Bisdee King, 91, passed away peacefully on March 6th at Trillium House in Marquette, Michigan.
Chuck or Charlie, as he was fondly known (he wasn’t picky), was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather (“Papa”), brother and uncle.
Chuck was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Katherine (Bisdee) and Oren King on April 11, 1933. He spent much of his youth in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, specifically in Wells and St Ignace, from where he graduated High School. He then attended Ferris State University and earned a degree in Pharmacy in 1955.
During his studies at Ferris State, he met his future wife, Gwyneth Edwards while working on the ferry between Michigan’s Lower and Upper Peninsula, prior to the Mackinac Bridge. Apparently their first date, smelting, sealed the deal and Gwyneth (from the outskirts of London, England) ended up staying in St. Ignace until Chuck finished Pharmacy School. Chuck and Gwen were married in 1955 in South Croydon, Surry, England. They had a son, David in 1958 and a daughter, Elizabeth (Beth) in 1960.
Chuck and Gwen moved to Marquette in 1955 and Chuck worked for the historic Pendill Pharmacy in downtown Marquette until he took a job with Parke Davis in Detroit as a research pharmacist in 1961.
Chuck and Gwen were not fond of Detroit and moved their family back to Marquette after about 2 years. Chuck went to work as a pharmacist at St. Luke’s Hospital until he purchased Pendill’s Pharmacy in 1969. He ran a successful business and founded Campus Pharmacy on Third Street in 1974.
Chuck knew many of his customers by name and developed a loyal customer base. He even learned some basic Finnish to greet his older Finnish customers in their home language. He always took time to chat with customers and emulated the very best in customer service. He closed Pendill’s Pharmacy in 1979 and sold Campus Pharmacy in 1991. He then worked as a pharmacist in St Croix, US Virgin Islands for approximately 2 years.
Chuck’s passion for sailing began in the early 70s, when he met Bruce Micklow who introduced him to the sport and quickly became his long-time sailing partner. He then purchased his first sailboat and sailing became a family activity and passion. He sailed to the Virgin Islands from Marquette multiple times and loved the experience. One of Chuck’s greatest memories was taking his boat, “Cariad”, from Marquette to the Caribbean in 1984! He had many adventures and made great friends during his sailing experiences. Chuck and Gwen travelled widely throughout the US and to other places, such as Great Britain, Europe, Greece, Egypt, China (for the adoption of their granddaughter), Jamaica, Mexico, the US and British Virgin Islands,
Chuck continued to work well into his 70s as a pharmacist. He loved to garden and took care of his Landscape into his 90s. Chuck will be sorely missed by many, but we will think of him fondly sailing in a warm, Caribbean breeze, his spinnaker flying, toward yet another shore.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, Oren and Katherine King.
Chuck is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Gwyneth (Gwen), Gwyneth (Gwen), his son, David (Jeanne) Coeur d ‘Alene, ID and grandchildren, Connor and Chandler; Daughter, Elizabeth Marquette, MI and granddaughter Zoe; Sister, Judy Britton (Robert); multiple nieces and nephews in the US and the UK.
A memorial for Chuck is planned for July 13, 2024 at the Presque Isle Pavilion with more details to be provided.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, should friends desire, donations be sent to Trillium House, 1144 Northland Drive, Marquette, MI 49855, where Chuck received the most loving and competent care they could have wished for. Condolences may be expressed online at fassbenderswansonhansen.com

Carolyn Irene Buehrly - May 05, 1925 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: KIVA, MI - Carolyn Irene Buehrly, 98, of Kiva, entered eternal life Friday evening, February 23, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born May 5, 1925, in Adena, Ohio, a daughter of Stanley and Mary (Stachura) Satory, Carolyn spent most of her childhood in Adena and Steubenville, Ohio, before her family relocated to Detroit where she graduated from high school. During her high school days, a teacher once asked the class what their predictions for the future were. Carolyn, often shy, responded that she thought a day would come when people would be able to not only talk on the phone, but at the same time see the people they were calling. We are not sure what the reaction to that farsighted statement was, but she did live to see her vision come true as she and her husband, Carl, enjoyed face timing with their children and grandchildren. The child of Depression Era parents, Carolyn learned early in life the value of work and developed an appreciation and admiration for the simple and finer things of life. Like so many young women of her time, one of her first job experiences was employment as a switchboard operator, with Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She later moved to the Thumb Area of Michigan where she was employed as an office manager and bookkeeper for Jensen Hereford Farms in Sandusky. It was there she met Jensen Farms herdsman, Carlton Edward Buehrly. On October 28, 1950, the couple was united in marriage in Sandusky, making their first home at Jensen Farms. Later when Carl’s work took them to Clarklake, Michigan, the couple began raising a family and Carolyn settled into her most fulfilling role of wife, mother, and homemaker. For over 20 years they resided in Southern Michigan until another employment opportunity opened for Carl in 1973 at the Michigan State University Experiment Station in Chatham and the move to the Upper Peninsula came about. When Carl retired in 1993, the couple moved to Kiva where they enjoyed the solitude and beauty of the area and visits from family and friends. Throughout the years, Carolyn was a very supportive mother who delighted in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She loved flowers, kept beautiful gardens, and made family celebrations of the holidays extra special. She possessed a beautiful soprano voice, and the family home was always filled with music. She had a tender heart for all animals. In 2009, the children gave Carolyn the special gift of a rescue dog, Missy, who provided countless hours of companionship and comfort following Carl’s passing. Carolyn is survived by her children, Robert (Vickie) Buehrly of Traunik, Colleen (Michael) Portale and Mary Lynn Buehrly both of Mason; her grandchildren, Bridgette (John) Woodham, Tiffany (Terry) Johnson, Bethany Buehrly, Andrew (Chelsea) Portale, and Ashley Portale; great-grandchildren, Clay Johnson,
Stella Johnson, John Woodham, Audrey Portale, and Theodore Portale. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, Carlton, on October 14, 2020; and brothers, Francis and Rudolph Satory; and her canine companion, Missy.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the caregivers who attended to her for the past three years.

Matthew (Matt) William Riipi - September 11, 1949 - February 11, 2024

Departed: 02/11/2024 (Marquette)
Obituary Preview: MARQUETTE, MI - Matthew (Matt) William Riipi, adored and cherished husband, father, uncle, neighbor, and friend, died on Sunday, February 11, 2024 at UP Health System in Marquette, Michigan surrounded by his family.
Matt was born in Hancock on September 11, 1949, son of Ernest and Mildred (Lexson) Riipi of Liminga. Matt grew up on the family farm with his siblings, Elsa and Rich, and graduated from Houghton High School in 1967. He earned a business degree from Michigan Technological University and later earned his CPA license.
Though they were friends throughout high school, Matt fell in love with his wife, Linda (Karinen) Riipi while he was working as a taxicab driver in Houghton during college. Matt and Linda enjoyed many years of adventures together, including completing the Circle Tour and camping around Lake Superior before marrying on October 4, 1975.
As newlyweds, Matt and Linda resided in Okemos, Michigan where Matt worked for the Michigan Auditor General’s office. The couple later moved back to the Upper Peninsula where he became the internal auditor and CPA for Northern Michigan University in Marquette. In addition to playing hockey, Matt was an avid skier, runner, triathlete, and certified scuba diver. He shot two holes-in-one golfing and he loved to travel both stateside and abroad.
Matt was a doting and devoted father to his only child, Erin. He was considered a second dad to many and the “cool” uncle of the family. After Matt retired from Northern Michigan University in 2007, he wintered in Marco Island, Florida where he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and spending time with his family on the beach.
People loved Matt. Effortlessly charming; he could strike up a genuine friendship with almost anyone. The most stylish and hip guy, he was proud of being a liberal Democrat and was incredibly supportive of his daughter and her wife, Mary. He was excited to vote for Joe again in 2024.
Matt was the definition of SISU and fought several intense health battles in the last two years of his life. The ultimate badass, he underwent emergency orthopedic surgery and a triple bypass in one week.
