Jeffrey E Fromm - June 10, 1955 - January 25, 2022

Departed: 01/25/2022 (Shamokin)
Obituary Preview: Shamokin – Jeffrey E. Fromm, 66, of 130 Sunbury Street, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Manor Care in Sunbury.
Born on June 10, 1955, in Sunbury, PA, he was the son of the late Albert and Vera (Powell) Fromm. He graduated from Milton High School in 1974.
On December 21, 1991, in Williamsburg, VA, Jeff married Barbara Moyer, who survives. He worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) at Allenwood, Lewisburg, and Schuylkill. Jeff was a trustee and member of the First United Methodist Church in Shamokin, appointed to the BOP Community Relations Board, President of the Shamokin City Planning Commission, member of the Milton and Shamokin Rotary Organization, a 32nd Degree Mason, part of the Williamsport Consistory, a member of the Goodwill Hose Company of Sunbury, the Northumberland Hook and Ladder Company, and the Shamokin Independence Fire Company. Jeff grew up in Lewisburg, PA, and was raised on the reservation at Lewisburg, as his father was a correctional officer at Lewisburg Federal Correctional Institute. Following high school graduation, Jeff worked for a number of companies and soon decided to start his own business. Fromm Security in Milton provided security to many companies and businesses throughout the area and at one time had 28 employees. After selling Fromm Security, Jeff earned his paralegal certification from Penn State University. He spent time working as a Northumberland County Deputy Sheriff and as a United States Marshal guard providing court security and transportation of federal prisoners. In 1989, Jeff began work as a paralegal specialist at FPC Allenwood where he was also an assistant team leader as a hostage negotiator. He was also a member of the first SORT(Special Operations Response Team) and was certified in the use of the AR 15, 12 gauge shotgun, and 9 millimeter gas pistol. Jeff continued his paralegal career at FCI Lewisburg, Allenwood, and Schuylkill. After retiring in 2012, Jeff returned to work as a correctional officer at Northumberland County Prison. Jeff became good friends with many of his co-workers, enjoyed all things BOP, and getting together with his “brothers.”
Following the tragedy of September 11th, Jeff became very interested in anti-terrorist security. He designed, developed, and received patents for an anti-terrorist/ rapid deployment barrier to protect military and civilian personnel. He also developed and received a patent for the Fromm 0100 Dashboard Mounted Personal Ballistic Shield to protect law enforcement officers in their vehicles. Jeff took pride in his work but enjoyed life and his family even more. When Barbara and Jeff married, Jeff became a truly devoted husband who supported Barbara in whatever she wanted to accomplish. There was no one in this world like Barbara to Jeff, and he showed that as the best husband and supporter. Golfing with his Dad, attending Phillies games with his daughter Jill, spending time at the Delaware beaches with Barbara, Sharon and Gary, enjoying a great dinner at Ghezzi’s with friends, going to the firing range with his buddy Chuck, and many dinners at Annamae’s were some of his favorite activities. He always looked forward to playing backyard soccer with his grandchildren and enjoying Joel’s home cooked home fries. Jeff loved all of his cousins and traveling to Italy with Barbara to visit his family meant the world to him. He loved his role of big brother to Kim and he looked on his nephew Sean as a son. Jeff would joke that the sister-in-law he was with at the moment was his “favorite.” But each of them felt that they were. Jeff enjoyed singing in the choir at First United and would turn to his choir members after each number and say, “We nailed it,” to the amusement of all. Stepping out of his comfort zone, Jeff joined ACT (Anthracite Community Theater) and starred in Arsenic and Old Lace, and, much to his surprise, he was a natural. Rubyanne and Linda were always a source of great laughter and deep friendship and Jeff enjoyed bragging about all of the accomplishments of his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Always community minded, Jeff arranged several Shamokin cemetery clean-up projects using Federal prisoner volunteers, participated in downtown beautification efforts, and advanced the development of a Shamokin hotel.
Jeff was a true Hardy Boy and impacted many lives, but none so much as his beloved wife Barbara and his loving daughter Jill and her family. From Jeff’s perspective, no matter what was happening or whatever the weather, one of his favorite phrases was, “It’s a beautiful day.” And it certainly was with Jeff in it. In addition to his wife, Jeffrey is survived by a daughter, Jill Mayer and her husband, Joel of NJ; two granddaughters, Avery Mayer, and Sydney Mayer; a grandson, Graham Mayer; a sister, Lisa Fromm; four sisters-in-law, Sharon Strausser of MD, Michele Moyer-Bruce and her husband, James of Shamokin, Kim Moyer and her husband, Stephen Gosper of FL, and Helen Fromm of Port Royal; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, Jeffrey was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Fromm; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Norma (Kramer) Moyer; and a brother-in-law, Gary Strausser. Shirley J Welker - December 04, 1927 - January 22, 2022

Departed: 01/22/2022 (Shamokin)
Obituary Preview: Mount Carmel-Shirley J. Welker, 94, of 118 Greco Lane, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, January 22, 2022 after a long battle with Post Polio Syndrome.
Shirley was born in Shamokin on December 4, 1927 to the late John Scott and Olive Adams.  She eloped and married her best friend and soulmate, Ned Welker, in February of 1950 who preceded her in death in 2017.
After graduating from Shamokin High School in 1945, Shirley would pursue several occupations including the Office Manager at Berkheimer Earned Income Tax, Secretary at St. John’s UCC and the area’s sweetest Avon Lady. However, the roles she cherished most were Mother to her only daughter, Karen, and Nana to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shirley was selfless to a fault and dedicated all of her time and attention to her family, never missing an event or opportunity to babysit. She and Ned shared a life full of travel, joy and laughter. Their favorite place to make memories for all of their family to treasure was their Knoebels’ cottage, spending numerous nights in the park and around the campfire.
Shirley’s last few years of life were full of adversary, including paralysis, but thanks to her daughter, family and many wonderful Personal Care Aides (Carol, Melissa, Felicia, Lil, etc.) she continued a life full of meaning, kindness and an abundance of love. She absolutely loved the sunshine on her face and had many opportunities to soak it in amidst friendly conversation on her back patio.
Shirley was so resilient that we would commonly, half-heartedly joke that she just might live forever. It is only now in her death that we realize how true that it is. She was such a profound part of so many happy memories that she will live on daily through all of us left behind loving her. We will remember her every time we see a Buttercup, every time we feel the sun shine or see a big smile, and most importantly every time we need to be brave.
Shirley is survived by one daughter, Karen DeFrancesco of Mount Carmel; two granddaughters, Coryn Parker and her husband Jason of Mount Carmel, and Cheryl Smearman and her husband Andy of Bellwood; and one grandson, Carmen DeFrancesco III and his wife Charissa of Perkiomenville; four great-grandsons, Ned Smearman, Jaxon Parker, Miles Smearman, and Carmen DeFrancesco IV; three great-granddaughters, Isabel Parker, Eliza Parker, and Penny Smearman; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Along with her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joseph and Rebekah “Jenny” (Campell) Welker; a brother John Scott; two sisters, Ruth Unger and Betty Weimer; five brother-in-laws, William Welker, Robert Welker, Joseph Welker, Atwood Welker, and Louis Welker; and five sister-in-laws, Susan Welker, Nancy Welker, Mary Welker, Jane Goguts, and Goldie Thomas. Thomas Francis Bamford - March 14, 1940 - October 16, 2021

Departed: 10/16/2021 (Shamokin)
Obituary Preview: SHAMOKIN     ---  Thomas Francis Bamford, 81, of 515 E. Dewart St., passed away at 10:25 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, in his residence, surrounded by his loving family.   Born on March 14, 1940, he was the last surviving child of the late Melvin and Blanche (Price) Bamford.
Tom graduated from Shamokin High School in 1958 and enjoyed planning the class reunions, which he loved to attend.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served for Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry from August 1963 to August 1965.  He was stationed in Germany with fellow veterans Andy, whom he still spoke to regularly, and Edmund who he reminisced with until Ed’s passing earlier this year.  When he came back to the U.S., he was summoned to Indian Town Gap to teach the new recruits how to fix radios like he did in Germany.
Tom worked construction with Everett Inc., where he always pointed out his favorite projects of the Washingtonville Towers and the Sunbury Fabridam.  He also helped putting a roof on the addition of Shroyer’s Dress Factory on Rock St.   Tom was the best cook in town at Harry’s Grill for nearly 50 years until he finally retired at the age of 74. He was well known around the area for his pizza specialty and the Frisco Fantasy.  He enjoyed coffee with friends Jack, Malcom, Palmer, and brothers Corky and Dan.
Tom was a life member of the Independence Hose Company.  For many years, Tom and his fellow members donated blood to the American Red Cross Organization. He also enjoyed playing cards at the Elks, Pastime Club, Redman Club, and Eckman’s Bar.  Tom attended The First United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee, usher, and became the “Sound Man”.
On August 19, 1973, he married Jean (Shroyer), daughter to the late Lawton and Leotta (Schrader) Shroyer.  Along with his wife Jeannie, he is survived by his beloved daughters, Connie (Bamford) Boyer and her husband, Thomas, Laura (Bamford) Herman and her husband, Eric, two grandsons Vincent and Joseph Herman, and his two favorite dogs, Corky B and Dallas.
An avid reader of the News Item, Tom would complete the daily crosswords and jumbles.  Every day he would open to the Obituaries and say, “Well, I’m not in there today.”  His sense of humor was well known by everyone.  Even after finding his obit, we are sure he is looking for the paper in Heaven to still do the crosswords and Jumble.
Tom walked to work at Harry’s Grill every day for fifty years, which many have mentioned seeing him walk through town. Throughout his life, he always looked forward to the annual Bamford Reunions where he spent the day with many members of the Bamford clan. During his retirement, Tom enjoyed preparing church pork chop dinners with his trusty helpers, making his famous filling, listening to his grandson’s stories, having coffee/reading the paper on the deck sunbathing, being the foreman of yardwork, watching old cowboy movies and cop shows with his wife many times over…holding the remote.
Tom was raised with six brothers and two sisters who preceded him in death, Robert, John, William, and his wife Carol, David, James, Daniel, Carol Eckman and her husband Bob, Shirley Stark, and her husband Robert, and a brother-in-law David Shroyer.  Two sisters, Betty and Mildred passed in childhood.   Surviving sisters-in-law include Susan Kushner and her husband Edward, Christine Griffiths, and her husband Ray “Red”, Doris Bamford, Marie Bamford, Terrie Bamford, Nancy Bamford, and in addition many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
The last few years he was under the medical care of Dr. Wayne Miller and Dr. Songdej of Penn State Hershey Cancer Center and their staffs.  He was fortunate to have a nurse for a niece, Tracey (Bamford) Bixler who provided great support at GSACH. Tom is now safe and well in the hands of God! FUNERAL NOTICE
