Obituary Preview: Abingdon, VA – William Frederick Corbett, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18, 2022, at Commonwealth Senior Living. Mr. Corbett was born on January 13, 1926 in Selma, NC and spent nearly 80 years of his life in Newport News, VA. He was a graduate of Newport News High School and retired from Newport News Shipyard & Drydock after many years of employment.
Mr. Corbett was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force where he served as sergeant and gunner on the B-29 Super Fortress during WWII. He fervently loved the Lord, his family, and his country, and he was an avid golfer. In 2011, Mr. Corbett relocated to Abingdon to be with his family and became a member of Abingdon Bible Church.
Mr. Corbett was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Rena G. Smith Corbett; daughter, Mary Gail Brinson; son-in-law, Dr. Clayton Brinson; and siblings, James T. Corbett Sr., William Hobart Corbett, Helen Corbett Gsell, Mary Rose Corbett, and Bruce Daniel Outland.
He is survived by three grandchildren, Clayton Travis Brinson of Portland, OR, Mary Dana Barnard of Abingdon, VA, and Courtney Lane Flood and husband Justin of Venice, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Mary Gianna Barnard, Gavin James Barnard, Lawrence Thomas Flood, and Wylder Gail Flood; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2022, in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, with Pastor Jason Bakker officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia Army National Guard. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service.

Obituary Preview: Julia Hilbert Stevens, age 92, of Abingdon, Virginia went to her Heavenly Home on September 11, 2022. She was born on January 3, 1930, to the late Clarence Drayton and Pearl Barrett Altizer Hilbert.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, D.G. Stevens, and infant son, Rodney Blaine. She was also preceded by her sisters, Goldie Altizer, Gracie Altizer, Mollie Vidmar, Uva Stagle, Carlie Altizer, and brothers, Amos Altizer, Earnest Altizer, Holiday Altizer, Wilburn Altizer, and Ralph Hilbert.
She is survived by her children: Carolyn Farley (and her husband, James) of Lebanon, VA, Charlotta Stevens of Atlanta, GA, and Anthony Stevens, Sr. (and his wife, Anna) of Lebanon, VA. She is also survived by grandchildren, Karen Farley of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Tim Farley of Kingsport, TN, Anthony Stevens, Jr. of Abingdon, VA, and Dr. Valerie Stevens of Shepherdstown, WV. She also leaves behind several beloved cousins, nephews, and nieces.
She grew up on the family homeplace (farm) near Bandy, where she met her husband. After they moved a few times, they settled in McClure, VA, where they raised their children. After retiring, they moved to Abingdon.
The funeral service for Julia Hilbert Stevens will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 2 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the funeral service at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Julia Elizabeth Mitchell, wife of Robert L. “Bob” Mitchell, age 84, passed away on Wednesday September 7, 2022, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Julia was born in Mt. Dora, FL; however, Bob’s work took them to many locales. She had lived in Raleigh, NC, Watauga, TN, Galion, OH and lastly Abingdon since 1993. She was a member of Maple Grove Presbyterian Church. Over the years Julia had worked in the telecommunications manufacturing industry and retail sales. Her mission in life was to love and care for her family. Julia will be remembered for her unswerving generosity to others.
She was predeceased by her parents Silas and Helen Hall Black, son Richard D. Mitchell, sister Mary Bird, and brothers Joe, Bill and Larry Black.
Julia is survived by her loving husband Robert L. “Bob” Mitchell, daughter Robin Smith and husband Dana of Abingdon, sister Nita Painter of Galion, OH, brother John Black of Madison, WI, grandchildren Richard Andrew Mitchell (Rose), Bobbi Villareal (Gabe), Emily Smith (Matt Bettis), Julie Langston (Drew), Audrey Wilkinson (John Riley), and Yenesew Smith, 13 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service on Sunday September 11, 2022 from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Stephen Talbert officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Mrs. Mullins was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Trula Brooks; husband Roy Junior Mullins; son, Donald Mullins; grandson, Andrew R. Mullins; and great grandson, Aaron Lee Deel.
She is survived by her children, Patricia Ann Davis, John C. Mullins and wife Gwen, Janice K. Deel, Ralph A. Mullins and wife Angela, Roy David “Butch” Mullins, and Lee Deel; brother, Bert Brooks and wife Diane; ten grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bertie and Ruth Rakes of Clintwood, VA.; her husband Vance Counts of Abingdon, VA.; and son Ralph Farmer of Westland, MI.
Irene is survived by a son Jerry Farmer (Margie) of Lizella, Ga.; daughter Lola Light of Roanoke, VA.; sisters Mildred Mullins of Monrovia, MD., Gaynell McCoy of Clintwood, VA., Anita Adkins of Gate City, VA.; Loraine Triplett of Bristol, VA.; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and enjoyed doing crafts especially sewing. As an active member of the local chapter of Project Linus she made and donated hundreds of blankets to that organization.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 27, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., followed by an interment at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Israel was a member of the Spoken Word Tabernacle in Coeburn, Va. He loved cars and was employed at Abingdon Auto Mart. He will be remembered as a happy and fun-loving gentleman.
He was predeceased by his parents Harlan Freeman and Kathy Harvey. Left to cherish his memories are his sister Hope Harvey of Abingdon; brothers Richard and Tony Harvey both of Coeburn; fiancé Brandi Dotson; special nephews Isaiah and Shawn Freeman; special friend Andrew Jessee.

Obituary Preview: Sharon Long passed away Friday, August 12, 2022, peacefully at her home in Bristol, Tennessee, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her husband Denny J. Long of Lebanon, Virginia. She is survived by her children Cynthia L. Tucker of Greenville, South Carolina, Marcia T. Ulcar (Frank) of Knoxville, Tennessee, and David R. Tucker (Leigh Ann) of Mt. Carmel, Tennessee, as well as her brother Don Mangin of Lima, Ohio. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Elisabeth Noblet, Wesley and Michael Cooke, Alexander and Benjamin Tucker, and Riley Loughran.
Sharon was born on November 21, 1942, in Lima, Ohio to John and Merle Mangin. Sharon’s mom said that as a little girl, Sharon never met a stranger, and this was so true. She was kind and interested in everyone she met throughout her life. She graduated from Lima High School in 1960 and moved to Tennessee in 1965. Sharon attended East Tennessee State University in the mid-1980s and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. After receiving her degree, Sharon worked at Bristol Regional Medical Center as a registered nurse in ICU for over 20 years. She retired from the hospital in 2004. After retirement, Sharon and her husband Denny traveled extensively in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. In her later years, Sharon loved competing in the AKC Agility events with her Australian Shepherds Belle, Rebel, and Scout.

Richard R. Wolters - February 01, 1943 - July 27, 2022

Obituary Preview: Richard R. Wolters, age 79, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born February 1, 1943, to Everett Wolters and Marjorie Davies Wolters. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one sibling, Barbara Ann Beaman. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Watts Wolters; a son, Aaron Brooks Wolters; daughter, Nancy Ann Wolters; daughter, Susan Watts Wolters and husband, Mark Paccione; three granddaughters, Magdalene Hamlin, Katherine Hamlin and Stella Rose Paccione; one sister, Beverly Simpson and husband, Claude Simpson; along with many nieces and nephews.
Richard was a graduate of East Carolina University, and attended William & Mary College for his Masters in Education Administration. He taught elementary and middle school and was an elementary school principal in Southampton County, Va. He was also assistant football coach and girls basketball coach at Windsor High School in Windsor, Va. After leaving education, he farmed for twenty years – something he had always wanted to do. He then became what he liked to call a bureaucrat, working for the US Department of Agriculture in the Farm Service Agency.
Richard was twice president of both the Isle of Wight Ruritan Club and the Abingdon Civitan Club. He was on the Board of Directors for Surry County Academy and the Farmer’s Cooperative in Surry County, Va. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, reading, working crossword puzzles, and having breakfast with his buddies at Chick-N-Little Restaurant. But most of all he enjoyed his family, and was so proud of his children and grandchildren.
A funeral ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, Va. A private committal service will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Forest Hills Chapel.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the caregivers at Ballad Hospice, and Johnston Memorial Hospital for their prayers, love and kindness during this difficult time.

Born on May 4, 1946, she was raised in Washington, D.C., the oldest of three.
She is survived by Donna Beane, sister of Palm Desert, Calif.; Bryan Beane (Diane), brother of Hendersonville, N.C.; her daughters, Chris Mead of Mechanicsville, Va., and Deb (Kevin) Harper of Henrico, Va.; and her five grandsons, who she absolutely adored, Patrick Shrader, Zachary Shrader, Christopher Harper, Braydon Harper and Jackson Harper.
Bonnie touched countless lives from the east to west coast over her 35 year career as a RN.
We respectfully follow her wishes for no traditional funeral. If you'd like, donations can be made in her name to your local animal rescue, local hospice or Kelly's Place (Venmo: @kelly-hentzen), where mom was loved and cared for with the utmost respect.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Robert F. Spriggs - September 02, 1933 - July 12, 2022

Obituary Preview: Abingdon, VA - Robert F. Spriggs, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on September 2, 1933, in Damascus VA. He attended the Rock School and upon graduation joined the Army and served in the Korean War and later served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, earning various medals for meritorious service including the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. He was a Paratrooper and earned Master Jumper Wings after completing over 306 jumps. He retired in 1971 and moved with his wife and five children to Abingdon VA.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Hurley) Spriggs and his youngest daughter, Sandra Dawn (Babe) Spriggs. He is survived by his oldest son, Robert F. Spriggs, Jr. of Abingdon, VA, Curtis D. Spriggs and his wife Jane of Bristol, VA., Linda Shaddon and her husband John of Medford, OR, and Lisa Amburn and her husband Ray of Morristown, TN. In addition, he is survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was an avid Braves Fan and loved baseball his whole life. He used to skip lunch in school to play baseball with his friends. He also loved fishing and hunting and spent a lot of time outdoors. He enjoyed sporty cars and pickup trucks and drinking Twisted Tea and bottled Coke. He had a lot of good times in life, but also had his share of the storms of life -- cancers, heart issues a few other health issues that are common to people of advanced age. He also liked to tell stories of people he knew in the Army and his childhood in Damascus.
Visitation will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022, in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA. A brief graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor David Robins officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia Army National Guard.

Garrett "Gary" Lee Wolfe - February 25, 1951 - July 04, 2022

Obituary Preview: Garrett Lee “Gary” Wolfe, age 71, of Bristol, Va., passed away on Monday, July 4, 2022, at his home in Bristol, VA.
He was born February 25, 1951, to the late Preston Lee & Willie Overbay Wolfe in Smyth County, Va. Gary served his country in the United States Army and he was a 32-year employee of Universal Fibers (the former Camac) where he retired as the Vice President of Total Quality. He was an ordained United Methodist Church minister and served as an interim pastor. He founded the Genesis Program for troubled youth, was instrumental in starting the Children’s Advocacy Center of Highlands Community Services in Bristol, Va., and started the Teacher of the Year Program in Washington County, Va.
In addition to his parents, Gary was also preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Wolfe; and brother, Ronnie Wolfe.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Susan Wolfe; two daughters, Jessica Mora and husband, Romeo, of Glade Spring, Va. and Carrie Wolfe and Robbie Heath of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; sister, Millie Turnmire and husband, Don, of Abingdon, Va.; brother, Paul Wolfe and wife, Traci, of Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren, Clay Mora and Kaylee Mora; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, July 8, 2022, at the Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon with Pastor Willis Osborne officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the United States Army and the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00PM on Thursday evening at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

Ella June lived in Marion, Va. for many years and attended Gospel Chapel for over 50 years. Gram was well loved and will be missed greatly.

Sadie was born in Washington County, VA on February 18, 1927, to the late John Henry & Julie O’Quinn Taylor. Along with her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband Ernest Fletcher Kestner, two sons Lyle Preston Kestner and Lawrence Edward Kestner; sisters Ella Mae Hudson, Irene Bailey, Mattie Snodgrass, Kansas Inscore, Kathleen Dancy, and Maudie Taylor; brothers Ralph Taylor, Dasoda “Happy” Taylor, and Charles Taylor; and a granddaughter Shawna Ashby.
Sadie was a devout Christian and a faithful member of the First Church of God Glade Spring. She was always taking time reading her Bible, studying verses, and even copying the entire Bible by hand. Sadie enjoyed watching the deer and was an avid drawer.

Harvey and his wife served and helped the community there for numerous years. He was a dedicated Christian and a member and deacon at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church. He is survived by loving wife of 66 years Lou “Judy” Mullins; two sons Mark Mullins & wife Sheila and Gary Mullins & future daughter-in-law Tina Easterly; brother Thomas “Tom” Mullins, Jr. & wife Rita; grandson Sean Mullins; great grandson Wyatt Mullins; and several nieces, nephews, and his loving church family

He was born November 19, 1941, in Saltville, Va. to the late William A. Hayden and Gracie Bise Hayden. In Jim’s younger years he enjoyed many varied interests including hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and showing horses.
He graduated from R.B. Worthy High School and Emory and Henry College. He taught school for 31 years in Richlands, Va. Jim exuded a thirst for knowledge and truly believed in the ability of people to succeed. He lived his personal and professional life as a strength that taught and encouraged others. He took pleasure in seeing them succeed. After retirement Jim enjoyed many years riding his recumbent bike with good friends. He also enjoyed reading and watching documentaries.
Jim was an active member of Belfast United Methodist Church for 30 + years and later joined Pleasant View United Methodist Church after relocating to Abingdon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Opal Hogston, Roy Hayden, Harold Hayden, and Christine Blue.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Judy Hillman Hayden; two special nieces, Pam Doane and husband, Ronnie, and Susan Holmes; three special nephews, Ken Hayden, Gary Hogston, and Jay Blue; several additional nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Cox, Saundra Hillman, and Debra H. Stallard and husband, Bill.
A funeral ceremony will be held at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Hwy., Abingdon, Va. 24210, on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dale Gilbert and the Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. A committal service will follow at the Serenity Garden Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Robert Franklin Horsch, MD - May 07, 1929 - April 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: Robert Horsch, son of Augustus and Nellie Finn Horsch, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2022. Bob was a gracious and loving husband, father, grandfather, great papa, and friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his compassion, his humanitarianism, and his ability to pull off a good practical joke. He gave with open hands and an open heart and without need for recognition.
Bob was born in Medford, Mass. and spent his childhood in South Weymouth, Mass., and one of his greatest childhood memories was seeing the Hindenburg fly over. He joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17, serving at Ft. Dix in New Jersey for two years and finishing high school before his discharge in 1948. He graduated from Theil College, Greenville, Penn., in 1952 where he met his wife of 58 years, Joan. He worked for Park Davis as a pharmaceutical Rep where he received and distributed the first polio vaccines in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1959 and completed his residency at Hammett Medical Center in Erie, Penn. He moved his family of four children to Westfield, N.Y. in 1960, where he practiced family medicine for 18 years. He moved to Abingdon, Va. in 1978 and practiced at the Russell County Medical Center until his retirement in 1995.
During his time in practice, he delivered thousands of babies, performed countless surgeries and received numerous honors including recognition by Paul Harvey and Contemporary Surgery Magazine for being the first physician to use a laparoscope to diagnose appendicitis. He was a civilian volunteer physician to Vietnam during the conflict and represented the Westfield, N.Y. Rotary Club as a volunteer physician in Bolivia. While traveling around the world, he was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Bangkok, Thailand. He valued education as illustrated through his provision of education for his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Bob was a devoted and passionate member of the Virginia Creeper Trail Club and served on the board of directors until his death. He was a member of the Lunch Bunch group of retired men that met weekly with no purpose except to eat and converse. He was a founding member of Eagle Ridge Ski Resort, which later became part of the Kissing Bridge Group of resorts.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Mary Beth Pierce (Danny) of Columbus, Ohio; and their children, Nathan, Ashley and Luke; Amy Smith (Dan) of Abingdon, Va.; and their children, Alex and Evan; Susan Molzan of Houston, Texas; and her children, Sophie and Sarah; and Thomas Horsch, of Abingdon, Va. Judy Horsch Baxter, his only remaining sibling, resides in Florida. He took great pride in his five great-grandchildren who brought him much joy as he aged.

Scott was a 1973 graduate of John S. Battle High School. He excelled in athletics in the areas of baseball and football. This led him to coach many youth teams in baseball and softball. He was employed with Advantage Solutions, a sales and marketing team within the grocery industry. He enjoyed fishing, barbequing, sports, sitting on the porch, entertaining and visiting with friends and family. He will be missed by many as he was a man of solid character and a good friend.

Obituary Preview: Andrew “Andy” Nickolas Farres, Jr., age 62, of Chilhowie, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 25, 2022, due to an acute lung injury caused by COVID. He passed peacefully with his five children. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and was a devoted Christian. If you asked Andy, his greatest accomplishment was being a father to his children. He was a loving and dedicated father. Andy was a lifelong cook and started cooking as early as seventeen years of age to help support his siblings. He most recently worked at Emory & Henry College where he enjoyed cooking for the students. Andy harbored a passion for sports, his favorite teams being the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Heat, the Miami Hurricanes, and the Florida Panthers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Nickolas Farres, Sr. and Wilma Pauline “Polly” Gorth.
Andy is survived by five children: Michelle Dopazo and husband, Alex, of Miami, FL.; Andrew Farres, III and wife, Laura Dowell, of Marion, VA.; Katherine Justice and husband, Jimmy, of Abingdon, VA.; Amanda Farres, of Marion, VA.; and Shane Farres, of the home; six siblings, Diana Farres, Chris Farres, Kathreen Farres, Gary Collins, Donnie Collins, and Robert Collins; and three grandchildren, Megan Dopazo, Ryan Dopazo, and Anastasia Justice.

Dan E. Wilburn, Sr. - September 25, 1923 - February 21, 2022

Obituary Preview: Abingdon, VA – Dan Ema Wilburn, Sr. 98, of Abingdon, Virginia died on February 21, 2022, at his home. He was born on September 25, 1923, in Thessalia, Virginia to William Andrew Wilburn and Lama Virginia Link Wilburn Harrell. He was raised by his grandparents Jacob and Sarah Victoria Link and had five brothers and one sister. He graduated from Pembroke High School in 1943 and married the love of his life Carrie Lee “Sue” Vance Wilburn in Pearisburg, a marriage which lasted until her death 76 years later.
Dan served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater on PT Boat 152, which was active in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After the war he returned home to Giles County, Virginia, before moving to West Virginia to attend telegraph school. He worked as a telegraph operator, freight agent, and train dispatcher for the Old Virginian Railroad, N&W, and finally Norfolk Southern Railway until his retirement at Roanoke, Virginia in 1984.
Dan is survived by his son Dan Wilburn, Jr., and his wife, Marian, of Bristol, Virginia; his daughter, Brenda Vernon and her husband, Monty, of Abingdon, Virginia; his grandsons Trey Wilburn and his wife, Carrie, of Sadieville, Kentucky; Mark Vernon and his wife, Jennifer, of Aldie, Virginia; Jeff Vernon and his wife, Mandy, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and granddaughter, Leann Vernon of Abingdon, Virginia. He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren, Chole, Ian, Emmy, Tyler, and Abbey Vernon.
Dan was predeceased by his wife, Sue, and brothers Russell Wilburn, Everett Wilburn, Walker Wilburn, Jim Wilburn, and Ronnie Harrell and sister Peggy Wilburn.
Services for Dan will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2022, in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Shahn Wilburn and Dr. Paul Bufford presiding. Honorary pallbearers include Dan Wilburn, Trey Wilburn, Monty Vernon, Mark Vernon, Jeff Vernon, Ian Vernon, Tyler Vernon, Jesse Baumgardner, and Charles Behymer.
