Currently living in Buhl, with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law for the past four years, Philip, known better as Phil, loved to count the cattle in nearby fields, watch the birds at the feeders outside his window, and spend his days with his wife, Doris, of 70 years.
Phil lived most of his life in California, starting in Susanville, where his father, Carlyle, began the first United States Forest Service (USFS) nursery, growing seedlings for the reforestation of burned and logged areas.  In sixth grade, the family moved to San Francisco for Carlyle’s new position in the USFS Regional Office. Phil graduated from Polytechnic High School in June 1945 and inspired by his father, enrolled in the School of Forestry at the University of Minnesota.  His studies were interrupted shortly after WWII when his father went to Germany to work with the lumber industry, while he and his mother, Apha, traveled to France for six months where he attended the School of Forestry.  Phil later returned to complete his degree at the University of Minnesota.

Phil became a Certified Master Gardener, caring for a variety of plant life from 1986 to 2000 when they sold the orchard to build a home on Hawkes Landing in Placerville.  In 2018, the home was sold, and they moved to live with their son, Bruce and wife Mary in Buhl, Idaho for the past four years.

Paulina "Paule" S. Ball - June 29, 1928 - October 22, 2022

Departed: 10/22/2022 (Buhl)
Obituary Preview: Paulina, or Paule as she was called, was born the ninth of ten surviving children to Bernard and Maria Ruffing in Humphrey, Nebraska on June 29, 1928.
The family moved to Idaho around 1940 and farmed in the Northview area near Buhl.  Paule moved to Boise after high school and attended secretarial school.  She later joined her sister Josephine in San Francisco.  Eventually, as a beautiful, young, single woman in the early 1950s, she joined the Foreign Service and moved to New Delhi, India, where she was a secretary at the American Embassy.  She loved her life there and made some lifelong friends.  She would tell her children stories of her adventures there, and the dignitaries she met.
While in India she met a young Navy pilot, John Ball, who would become her husband.  They, and their growing family, spent time in California before being stationed in Japan for four years.  Angela and John were joined by Jerome and Jennifer before the family returned to California, where Patricia was born.  Paule and the kids lived in Southern Idaho and got to know the extended family better, while awaiting housing to join John, who was, at that time, stationed on Okinawa.  After John retired from the Navy in 1971, at Oak Harbor, Washington, the family moved to Buhl where John and Paule remained.
Paule had been an officer’s wife during the Navy years, and loved the social life associated with that.  She and John often attended and hosted “Hail and Farewell” parties, and she passed her love of entertaining on to her daughters.  After retiring to Buhl, she turned her energy to gardening, and church involvement.  She was active in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Ladies League and helped compile a local church history as well as working at the church food booth at the County Fair.  She became part of a group of amazing ladies who would attend Saturday evening Mass, followed by dinner, and they became her precious circle of friends.
Her greatest joy was her children, and she was so proud of them all.  When there were family gatherings, nothing made her happier than to listen to her children and grandchildren discourse on their jobs, lives, and the state of the world.
In her later years chronic illness hampered her ability to remain in her home independently, though her mind remained sharp.  She spent her last several years in assisted living but continued to attend Mass and social events as she was able.  Paule died October 22, 2022, with family in attendance.
Paule was preceded in death by her husband, John. She is survived by her children, Angela Ball (Paul) Buxton, John (Marlene Berg) Ball, Jerome (Jocelyn Torres) Ball, Jennifer (Eric) Williams, and Patricia (Brian) Gardner; as well as numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Rosary will be held at 6:00 pm, with a viewing beginning at 5:00 pm, Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Farmer Funeral Chapel, 130 9th Ave N, Buhl.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 3, 2022 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1701 Poplar St. Buhl.
Those wishing to make a donation in Paulina’s honor in lieu of flowers may contribute to the Buhl QRU through the Buhl Fire Department, 201 Broadway Avenue North, Buhl, Idaho 83316.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Paule’s memorial webpage at www.farmerfuneralchapel.com.

Bernard "BJ" Wetzstein - May 09, 1928 - August 31, 2022

Departed: 08/31/2022 (Buhl)
Obituary Preview: Bernard Joseph Wetzstein, 94, of Buhl passed away August 31, 2022 at his home in Buhl, surrounded by family. Bernard was also known as “Bernie” or “BJ” to many.  He was born the oldest of 10 children to Ben and Cecilia Gietzen Wetzstein in Glen Ullin, North Dakota on May 9, 1928.  His birthright became an important factor as he remained a leader to his siblings and their families his whole life. He worked on the farm and nearby railroad as a youth to help support them through tough times of the Great Depression. From this, his role and responsibilities were instilled in him at a young age.
He entered the U.S. Navy at age 18 while his family and fiancé moved to Idaho.  When he returned home, he settled in Idaho with his family and new wife-to-be.
He married Frances Ann Eckroth on June 9, 1948 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Buhl. They were married 55 years before her passing in 2003. From this union 11 children were born. This continued his role as the family patriarch, always taking pride in knowing he instilled strong disciplines, thrifty living, and great work ethics into his children.
BJ worked several construction projects before establishing his own custom gravel hauling business.  He was an entrepreneur and frugal one-man operation helping on many local projects. He enjoyed going for drives around the countryside after retiring to reminisce about places he helped make better and the people that lived there. He marveled at the changes occurring over time.
He loved playing pinochle but his ruthless tactics and keen mind made for a difficult time for his family to enjoy the game with him. He made time in his day to meet with his pals at many local Buhl businesses to play.  After outliving most of his pals, he softened his ways and started teaching more family, giving him the opportunity to play again. Sunday afternoons became his highlight game of the week to those that came to his home and helped him continue his passion.  He kept his love of pinochle and puzzles with him until the very end.  He also loved to go to the hills and to cut firewood, turning it into a family outing and way of life for many years.  He remained a lifelong member of his local church and was also a 4th degree charter member of the Buhl Council of Knights of Columbus.  Family genealogy was important to him, and he continued to follow the Germans from Russian ancestor heritage in North Dakota.
Bernard is survived by nine of his children, Patsy (Bob) Foster of Pocatello; Arnie (Shawnlee) of McGregor, Iowa; Allan (Eileen) of Chorley, England; Glenda (Bob Schwertfeger) Brown of Twin Falls; Connie (Tom) Brezinski of Long Beach, California; Pam (Larry) Gore of Buhl; Melanie Wetzstein of Buhl;  Karen (Mike) Schulz of Twin Falls; Cecil (Shanna) Wetzstein of Kimberly; and Bernice (Jamie) McCreery of Buhl; as well countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and so many  others considered family.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents; all siblings; his wife; son, Darrell; infant son, Wayne; as well as several grand and great-grand babies.
A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1701 Poplar St., Buhl. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 8, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with a luncheon to follow in the Parish Hall.  All are encouraged to join and share your stories. A private family graveside will be held at West End Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to your choice of charity.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on BJ’s memorial webpage at www.farmerfuneralchapel.com.

Johanna LaVerne Warnock - February 11, 1928 - August 05, 2022

Departed: 08/05/2022 (Buhl)
Obituary Preview: Our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Johanna “Jody” Ormsbee Warnock, 94, said “Vaya Con Dios” to this earthly existence in the twilight hours of August 5, 2022. I'm sure she was welcomed by the beautiful melodious harmony of her sisters and mother! Soon to follow that exuberant welcoming we can imagine her and our dad dancing away to the music of Glen Miller! Mother led a full and busy life. She loved dancing, traveling, animals and, of course, her family. Sadly, yet nobly, she is survived only by a cousin of her original youth-filled family. That cousin, Joan, and mother spent many, many years talking and sharing dreams, shenanigans, and good times through their life's journey; all of their 94 years!
I think the most memorable employment our mother had was being our dad's co-driver at a local trucking company, where they drove cross country delivering trout. She loved the culture and the fall colors, especially in Pennsylvania and talked about it often. Many memories made together of Thanksgivings, Christmases, birthdays, ball games, dance recitals, rodeos, and fairs; we will cherish them all.
She loved her family fiercely and welcomed any "bonus" family members too! Mother is survived by her son, David (Lois) Warnock; daughter, Roy (Ed) Ahrens; grandchildren, Christy, Morgan (Terry), and Miranda (Tom); bonus grandchildren, Stacey (Jeffrey), Lisa (John), and Desi; great grandchildren, Anthony, Brianna, Keegan, and Kaelee; and bonus great grandchildren, Joshua, Erik, Josef, Jacob, Natalie, Connor, Kody and Kenadee.
Those awaiting her over the threshold are our father, Robert “Bob” Warnock; three sons, Gary, Ronald, and Richard; parents, LaVerne and Leota Ormsbee; two sisters, Wynema and Gwendolyn; brother, Billy; grandson, Wes; and many, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
This brings this era for our family to a close. Cherish your elders and write down their stories and lineage. It's what they would want.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, August 11, 2022 at West End Cemetery, 1574 E 4150 N, Buhl. The family requests no flowers.
The family asks if you are attending to bring a single rose to place on the casket.
Special thank you to the Visions Hospice team who lovingly and compassionately cared for our mother: Staci, Adina, Alyssa, Aliee, Joel, Keillie, Melissa, Natalie, and Joni. Gods' Speed Mother-See you on the flip side!
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Johanna’s memorial webpage at www.farmerfuneralchapel.com.

Maxine Marie Wagner - May 16, 1928 - August 04, 2022

Departed: 08/04/2022 (Buhl)
Obituary Preview: Maxine Marie Wagner, 94, passed away peacefully on the family farm, Thursday, August 4, 2022. Maxine was born in Ord, Nebraska to George and Alice Wachtrle on May 16, 1928.
In 1935, the family moved to Buhl with the Charles Dana family and settled in the Deep Creek area, later moving to Castleford. Maxine graduated from high school in Castleford in 1946. She then spent two years in Boise; one year in nursing school and one year working for a doctor. When Conrad said he’d worn out a car driving to Boise to see her, Maxine came home, and they were married in the fall of 1948.
She always felt blessed that she was able to be a stay-at-home mom; her family was her life. A couple of months at Green Giant each year was enough to send her back home content. She often said her girls learned to make gravy when she went to Green Giant. While raising seven children, she had little time to play with them but enjoyed watching their imaginations in the drama plays they’d put on for her. Conrad and Maxine enjoyed many trips in their motor home with the Good Sams and to other destinations until Conrad passed on in 2001. Her love for flowers and birds was surpassed only by her love for her family and her God. Maxine said the day she departs from us, she would be watching over each of her family with her love.
Conrad and Maxine were blessed with seven children, Diane (Doug) Rex of Wendell; George (Jean) Wagner of Twin Falls; Cindy (Rick) Olander of Twin Falls; Teresa (Rick) Thometz of Boise; Andy (Sandi) Wagner of Buhl; Mark (Shelley) Wagner of Buhl; and Amy Wagner of Buhl; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Otto (Sandra) and Walter; and sisters-in-law, Beverly, Barbara and Eva.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Conrad Wagner; parents, George and Alice Wachtrle; brother, Reverend Paul Wachtrle; sister, Virginia (Ginny) Young; six brothers-in-law; and two sisters-in-law.
A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 11, 2022 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1701 Poplar St. Buhl, with Celebration of the Rosary to follow. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with a graveside service concluding at the West End Cemetery and a dinner to follow.
The family would like to express a special thanks and gratitude to Bayleigh and other staff from Heritage Home Health & Hospice. For those who desire, memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, PO Box 626, Buhl, ID 83316-1732.
