Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including biographical information, funeral or memorial service details, and sometimes personal anecdotes or tributes.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or other third party. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), surviving family members, funeral or memorial service details, and any notable achievements or accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's usually between 100-500 words. The goal is to provide enough information to give readers a sense of who the person was without overwhelming them with too many details.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is celebrated in the way you want it to be.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information like name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides additional context and celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a great way to capture the personality and spirit of the deceased. Just be sure to keep it respectful and appropriate for the audience.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the newspaper or online platform you use. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may offer package deals or flat fees. Be sure to ask about pricing when you submit your obituary.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This may be possible, but it depends on the publication's policies. If you need to make changes, contact the newspaper or online platform directly to ask about their editing process.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period of time. Be sure to check with the platform for their specific policies.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, this is a common practice. Simply specify the charity or charities you'd like donations to be made to in memory of the deceased.

What if I'm not comfortable writing an obituary myself?

Dont worry! Many funeral homes offer assistance with writing obituaries, or you can ask a trusted friend or family member for help. You can also consider hiring a professional writer or using an online template as a guide.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, lyrics, or other meaningful phrases can add depth and personality to an obituary. Just be sure to properly attribute any copyrighted material.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive details about the deceased's life or death that you're unsure about sharing, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit them. Remember that an obituary is meant to be a celebration of life, not a expose.

Can I include pets in an obituary?

Yes! Many people consider their pets to be part of their family, so it's perfectly acceptable to mention them in an obituary.

What if I need to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication directly as soon as possible to report any errors. They'll work with you to correct them and republish the revised obituary.

Can I reuse an existing obituary from another source?

This depends on copyright laws and permissions. If you didn't write the original obituary, be sure to get permission from the author or publication before reusing it.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

In addition to including meaningful stories and anecdotes in the obituary itself, consider creating a memorial fund or scholarship in their name, planting a tree or making another lasting tribute that honors their memory.

What if I'm struggling emotionally while writing an obituary?

Taking care of yourself during this difficult time is crucial. Consider enlisting support from friends, family, or a professional counselor if needed. Remember that writing an obituary is just one step in the grieving process – take your time and prioritize your well-being.

Can I include social media handles or hashtags in an obituary?

Yes! Including social media handles or relevant hashtags can help spread the word about the passing of your loved one and encourage others to share their own memories and condolences online.

What's the best way to share an online obituary with others?

You can share online obituaries via email, social media, or messaging apps. You can also print out copies to distribute at funeral services or other gatherings.

Can I create a video tribute as part of an online obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to upload videos, photos, and other multimedia elements alongside the written tribute. This can be a powerful way to celebrate your loved one's life and legacy.
