John David Waldron - December 03, 1937 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Gilbert)
Obituary Preview: John David Waldron, 86, of Chandler, AZ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Evergreen Assisted Living. Born on December 3, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the youngest of six brothers to Martha and Kenneth Waldron. John graduated from Manhattan High School of Aviation Trades (SAT) in June 1955.
John launched his career at Con Edison in 1958, and shortly thereafter, he married his beloved wife, Barbara Singer, on January 24, 1959. As he embarked on his professional journey, John also devoted himself to advancing his education at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Despite the challenges of managing both work and family life, which included caring for two toddlers, he diligently completed his Associate of Applied Sciences in Electrical Technology with honors in 1963. During this period, John skillfully managed the demands of his expanding career alongside his increasing family responsibilities. In addition, he served for a short period of time in the Army Reserves.
In October of 1964, John and Barbara moved to Selden, NY, on Long Island, where they raised their five children: Debra, John, Karen, Barbara, and Cheryl. Initially, John commuted daily into New York City, but later he opted for the Long Island Railroad for his commute. He commuted long hours every day so that his children could have better educational opportunities.
Over his 38-year career as an engineer in the electrical transmission system, John played a vital role in supplying power to New York City and the surrounding areas. He retired in 1996 and moved to North Haverhill, NH, before moving to Ocala, FL, attracted by the warmer weather. John was a devoted husband and father who cherished his time traveling, particularly enjoying trips to Branson, Pigeon Forge, and on Caribbean cruises.
John also had a deep passion for war history, often watching his favorite war movies repeatedly and delving into war novels. This interest enriched his knowledge and provided a cherished hobby throughout his life. Following Barbara’s passing on May 23, 2021, John relocated to Gilbert, AZ, to be nearer to his daughters.
He leaves behind his children, Debra (Mesa, AZ), John and his wife Debbie (Ephrata, PA), Karen (Maricopa, AZ), Barbara and her husband Scott (Gilbert, AZ), and Cheryl and her husband Dan (Sammamish, WA). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alicia, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Nicole, and Danielle.
To honor the memory of John Waldron, you're invited to consider donating to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation. Your support can make a meaningful difference. Visit https://t2t.org/ to contribute. “Rest in peace John. You will always be in our hearts.”
Visitation details will be provided soon. A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday, May 6th at St. Mary Magdalene Church, 2654 E. Williams Field Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295 from 10-12pm. John will be laid to rest next to his wife, Barbara, at Highland Memorial Park in Ocala, FL

Barry Swen Severson - February 08, 1965 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Gilbert)
Obituary Preview: In Loving Memory of Barry Swen Severson
Barry Swen Severson, 59, peacefully passed away on April 15, 2024, at his home in Gilbert, AZ.
Born February 8, 1965, to Harold and Nylia Severson, he was the youngest of four siblings and grew up on a cattle ranch north of Wall, SD. He started his formal education in a one-room schoolhouse in Creighton, SD, graduated from Wall High School, and spent three and a half years at the University of South Dakota to earn a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and a Minor in Meteorology in 1986.
On December 21, 1991, he married his beloved wife, Adelaida (Velasco) Severson, in Honolulu, Hawaii. The two lived in multiple cities across Arizona, before finally settling down in Gilbert. In 1994, they founded Bushtex Inc., a global satellite communications company. Together, they worked passionately to build and grow their hometown company, one that has become a leader in the satellite industry.
Barry’s career took him across the globe. By plane, train, boat, bus, and other less conventional means, he traveled to every corner of the world. He worked in more than 120 countries throughout his career – some that don’t even exist in name anymore, and most times remotely, “in the bush” as their company name implies.
In 1987, he started driving and operating transportable uplinks for major events within the United States. Sporting events included: network PAC-10 football games; HBO championship boxing matches; Goodwill Games for Turner Broadcasting; CBS Super Bowl coverage; and Top Rank Boxing and Golf for ESPN. Others were news events, like the Democratic and Republican Conventions, along with the Presidential Elections for all networks; live coverage of events for CNN; and entertainment events like the Grateful Dead Concert for Pay-Per-View, and HBO Comic Relief.
In 1991, the Gulf War presented Barry the opportunity to take his knowledge internationally, and he signed on as a freelancer for CBS News in Amman, Jordan. This was the beginning of a very long trip.
Barry’s eight passports were stamped from places all over the globe, including India, Mozambique, South Africa, Haiti, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Cuba and Afghanistan. During these travels, he was mainly in field operations handling logistics and engineering of both international and domestic satellite uplinks and downlinks through flyaway kits and mobile units, which eventually led him to be an innovative leader in the industry.
His work allowed him a front row seat to historical events and the opportunity to meet influential people all over the world. From Formula One Races in Australia, Malaysia, and Brazil, to civil unrest in former Bosnia-Herzgovina, Rwanda and former Zaire to UEFA Championship League Football in Bucharest, Romania, to a Larry King Live interview for CNN with the Dalai Lama at his residence in India to the first-ever live broadcast from the Titanic for the Discovery Channel, Severson saw it all. And these were just a sampling.
He built temporary satellite antennas for long-term events like the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia and the 2002 World Cup in Seoul, Korea and has supported every Winter and Summer Olympic Games since 1994. Innovation and hard work combined allowed Barry to find creative solutions in whatever he did, whether professionally or personally. Creative and dedicated, he never shied away from a challenge and worked tirelessly and courageously to broadcast significant events to global audiences. This led to building a successful and sustainable business with Adelaida, which evolved into supporting mission critical events for our nation’s warfighters and Federal government. The drive to build this business was fueled by his motivation to provide for his family.
However, more than all his globetrotting, Barry relished time spent hunting in the wilderness. He humbly appreciated nature and its great gifts, and he shared his love of the outdoors with his friends and family. A skilled hunter, Barry accomplished the rare feat of the Arizona Big 10, successfully harvesting all 10 big game species in the state and actually creating delicious cuisines from them all. On March 10, 2019, the Bowhunting in Arizona Record Book Committee awarded him the Biennial Award for the first place Mountain Lion trophy.
Barry was an honest and charismatic man. Although sometimes having a firm and staunch demeanor, he had a gentle and sentimental side for those he loved. Despite enduring war zones and a terminal illness, he remained strong, good-spirited and lighthearted. He was a dependable, loyal friend with a fun-loving presence, and he was a captivating storyteller. Barry was diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in the fall of 2020. As with everything else in his life, he fought with vigor and optimism until his last breath. He will always be remembered as an honorable, respected, and noble individual.
Finally, Barry believed in being charitable and sharing the fruits of his labor by paying it forward and helping those in need. He and Adelaida co-chaired the Bishop’s Charity Development Appeal for the Diocese of Phoenix two years in a row, successfully raising funds that topped the previous years. Beneficiaries of this charity ranged from homeless Veterans, Catholic schools in need, the elderly and Native American children. Passionate about higher education with an international focus, Barry and Adelaida created Arizona State University Walter Cronkite Journalism School’s Global Initiatives, allowing students to study journalism and the media abroad. They gifted the University of Arizona’s School of Journalism with their first Broadcast/Podcast studios. And they started the International Media Studies fund at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Journalism and Communications.
Barry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Adelaida (Velasco) Severson; his mother Nylia Severson of Rapid City, SD; siblings Steven (Cindy), Brenda (Wayne), and Clayton (Tammy) of Rapid City; children Lars, Brock, and Swen; and newborn grandson Cash, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father Harold Severson. Services are as follows:

Grant W. Widmer - June 09, 1942 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Gilbert)
Obituary Preview: Life Sketch for Grant Widmer
Grant W. Widmer was born on June 9, 1942 in Montpelier, Idaho, to George Louis and Margaret Widmer. He grew up in the small town of Geneva, Idaho, with two brothers and four sisters.
Grant learned to drive the tractors and help milk the cows on their farm at a very young age. He attended Geneva Elementary school where there were two teachers with four grades in each classroom. The older kids would do a lot to help the younger kids learn.
Grant graduated from Montpelier High School where he was active in the Future Farmer’s of America Club and was elected to be the vice president his senior year. He also played basketball all four of his high school years and ran track events.
After graduating in 1960, Grant moved to Logan, Utah, to attend Utah State University. He was called on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served two and one half years in Switzerland—German speaking. His parents would sell one of his sheep or range cows to send him the money he needed to pay for his mission expenses.
After returning home, he continued attending Utah State University where he joined the reserve police force and worked as a security guard on campus. He also did custodial work in the Engineering Building in the evening to help with his expenses. He received his Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education.
During the summer of 1966, while attending summer school, Grant went on a college sponsored hike in Logan canyon. There was a young lady whose name was Colleen Hirschi who also went on the hike. Her grandparents were Grant’s closest neighbors in Geneva. They began dating and were married on September 10, 1968 in the Logan LDS temple.
Since Grant already had a motorcycle, their first purchase was a Honda 150 motorcycle for Colleen so they could go riding together.
After completing their education in 1969, they moved to Gresham, Oregon, where Grant taught manufacturing and welding at Gresham High School for the next thirty years. He also taught night classes for Mount Hood Community College.
During the summer months, the family would return to Geneva so Grant could help his father on the ranch.
Grant and Colleen have five children. Mike in Paradise, Utah; Tiffany Rinne in Brookline, Massachusetts; Angela Kearsley in Gilbert, Arizona; Kimberly Grant and Krista Griffiths in Mesa, Arizona.
Grant and Colleen served two missions at the Pioneer Historical Sights in Wyoming. The first was at Sixth Crossing and the second at Martin’s Cove.
In 2010, they moved from Oregon to Arizona, and in 2012, they bought a home in St. Charles, Idaho, and became snowbirds.
Grant has always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent many years working in the Boy Scout program. He has also served in the Bishopric, the Elder’s Quorum Presidency, the Stake Young Men’s Presidency, as a member of the High Council, as a Stake Missionary, and in various teaching positions. Grant and Colleen also served for many years as service missionaries at the Bishop’s Storehouse in Arizona.
Grant has always loved sports, camping, skiing, canoeing, and traveling. He and Colleen had many opportunities to travel after they retired from teaching. They have been able to visit many foreign countries and have traveled with family and friends on several cruises.
Grant was a creator. He could build or fix pretty much everything. His creative mind made life with him very interesting and led to many “Grant Stories” that we all still love to hear over and over again. His sense of humor was unique. He always made everyone around him have fun and feel happy. In his later years when dementia began to take hold of his mind, it was difficult for the family to witness, but he never complained, and he always had a smile and hug for us. But most of all, Grant was a family man. He loved his family dearly and would do anything for them. Grant passed away peacefully on the morning of April 6, 2024 in Gilbert, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, five children, nineteen grandchildren, and soon to be, six great grandchildren. He is loved beyond description and will be sorely missed by his family until they can all be together again!

Jim began his career as an audiologist, employed by several Ear, Nose, and Throat physicians in the Twin Cities area. After a hard day at the office, he enjoyed listening to his high-fidelity stereo system, simply relaxing in his easy chair for hours.

In late March Bob Millier of Scottsdale, Jim’s lifelong friend, was entertaining Jim and his partner Susie in Arizona.
