David M. Smith - March 06, 1956 - September 26, 2022

Departed: 09/26/2022 (Baldwinsville)
Obituary Preview: Love & Diamonds through my Dad's Eyes Written by Crystal Smith What does love look like? It might be in the smile lines next to my father's crinkly eyes. It might be the warmth in his laughter when I told him about the latest mishap to befall his grandson. It might be the twinkle in his eyes when he told me that he was sure the cute nurse was definitely flirting with him. My father, David Michael Smith, was a passionate dreamer, a poetic optimist, and grandiose in nature. On September 26th, 2022, my dad opened his eyes in the hospital, gave me the briefest of smiles, and said, "I'm dying." He nodded his head in confirmation and drifted into a peaceful sleep to join God and his late wife, Gemma. Those of you who knew him wouldn't be surprised that he managed to put in a sleepy request for coffee before he took off on his new journey. For those of you who did not know him, let me introduce you in his own words from the book he was working on, "Questions Answered: Solving the Mysteries of Life, Death, and What Awaits Our Souls Beyond Death."
My name is David Michael Smith. Common name. Uncommon heart and soul. I am a child of God, modern-day philosopher, and published poet. I will be your guide on this journey into the previously unknown. I am so happy to have you as a friend, travel companion, and fellow inquisitor.
My greatest wish is that I can be transformed into something precious. A beautiful diamond for God and all of humanity. Sparkling brilliantly in the light being emitted from my heart.
You can see where the grandiose part comes in! But his reference to diamonds comes from a more heartfelt place than fancy for this sparkly jewel. Just as carbon requires immense heat and pressure to be transformed into diamonds deep within the earth, my dad was also tempered by his struggles in life. His battles with addiction, poverty, lung cancer and COPD would have brought anyone to their knees. Through it all he stayed true to his devotion to love in all forms: romantic love, love for God, and love for this planet and all 8 billion humans that inhabit it. Love for his cat, Brina, and love for his children and grandchildren and siblings. No matter his circumstances, he reached out to those around him. He wrote love poetry on Facebook and shared it with his 4,125 friends and a multitude of poetry groups in which he won awards for his poetry. He did not allow his struggles to define him; instead, he used them to become a diamond. I will miss you forever, dad. Until we meet again.
David Smith was born to James and Gwendolyn Smith in Auburn, NY on March 6th, 1956. He lived a life full of adventure and love while working humbly as a baker and then CNC operator. He passed away peacefully in the company of family on Monday, September 26th, 2022 at 66 years old.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gemma Lavoie. Also predeceased by his siblings, Kathy Copey, Jimmy Smith, Rick Smith, and Barb Wentworth.
David is survived by his children, Shaun Smith and Crystal (Roger Villalona) Smith; grandchildren, Raelynn Humble, Jade Smith, Dillon Smith, and Jasper Smith. David is also survived by his siblings Shirley (Joseph) Sherman, Linda (Pete) Benton, and Bob (Chris) Smith.

David was born June 25, 1983 in Stamford, Connecticut to John and Melanie Siau, moving to Pompey when David was little. Over the next 21 years, he became the oldest brother to 6 sisters and 3 brothers who he loved. There are many stories of fort constructions, Lego builds, and creek adventures. David began working at Benchmark Media Systems, Inc. when he was just 16. He obtained his Associate Degrees in Electronic Media Communications from Onondaga Community College and Air Traffic Control from Beaver Falls Community College. He received his pilot's license during his studies at Beaver Falls as well. He continued part time at Benchmark while attending college, and later returned to full-time employment. David was a member of the Pompey Community Church where he played bass on the praise team. He was a big fan of dad-jokes long before he became a father. The bigger groan from his audience, the more he would enjoy them. And if anyone was taking a picture, David made sure to photobomb as many as possible. Margaret Adeline Shunk - August 12, 1928 - July 06, 2022

Departed: 07/06/2022 (Baldwinsville)
Obituary Preview: Margaret Adeline Shunk (n?e Raymo) was born in Ann Arbor Michigan in 1928, and was raised in Massena New York, the daughter of Flora and Vincent Raymo of Browning Crossroads. She has passed into the arms of God on January 6, 2022. She is survived by her sister Betty Ann Sweeney of Massena, and brother Dawson Raymo of Canandaigua, by all six of her children, and grandchildren: Charles Shunk of Reno NV; Marcia Wisehoon of Palmetto FL (son Vincent); Mary DuFour (husband Dan and daughters Amber and Rachael of Baldwinsville, NY; Ellen Shunk of Candor, NY (daughters Austin Cummings and JoLene Whittaker – whose twins are the two great grandchildren), Joseph Shunk (wife Trisha Christian; son Devin Shunk, daughter Natalie Desiderati, and daughter Elena Christian); and Julie Bertoldi (life partner George Harrison and children Amanda and George Harrison, Jr.) of Baltimore, MD. Predeceased are her brothers Douglas and Patrick, and sister Anet Reed. Margaret was a stellar student at A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing in Ogdensburg, NY, graduating in 1948. Upon graduation, she was engaged to the WWII veteran Charles Dana Shunk of Ogdensburg, NY. After a long and devoted marriage, Charles passed in 2009, long after successfully raising their six children (a number she predicted and announced to her husband's surprise as he carried her over the threshold of their first house). From the beginning to the very end, her family was at the heart of her deepest happiness and gratitude. She was delighted to be able to enjoy seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Margie was an exemplary nurse for most of her life (returning to school for her Nursing Master's degree after her last child was born), working in Massena, Syracuse, and Lowville, in Emergency Room Nursing, Maternity Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, and as Director of Nursing at Lowville General Hospital. A devout Catholic, she and Charles were active in their church families; she held a presidential appointment in the Knights of Columbus Women's Auxiliary for a time; they were also committed to the Christian Family Movement. In retirement, she was recruited by New York State as part of a travelling team of In-Service Training Program Evaluators, a post she particularly enjoyed since spouses were allowed to tag along! She had many joyful recountings of those days. Despite this demanding career, Margie managed – and cherished -- regular camping trips (sometimes in cabins, often in tents, and pop-up and RV trailers) with Charlie and children in tow, throughout the Rideau Canal in Canada, the Thousand Islands Region, Finger Lakes, Adirondack Mountains, Cape Vincent on Lake Ontario, and countless state and county parks. She enjoyed swimming in summer, and, at her eldest son's initiative, took up skiing at the tender age of 40!! There were a few valiant attempts to match the humorous wit of her husband, but she much preferred to soak in the laughter of the ever-present corny jokestering at the dinner table. She had brilliantly married an excellent cook, and in their second retirement, they made the world-famous "Charlie's Gourmet Fruitcake" from a commercial kitchen in Newark, NY, selling them at craft fairs around New York State. Customers mailed them off to their families, and Margie and Charlie and received letters from around the world attesting to their excellence. She and Charlie also travelled across the United States visiting National Parks. She was the primary caregiver for her beloved Charlie during his last years, a challenge she faced undaunted and with great grace and faith. Even at her last residence, she was regularly visited by her neighbors for medical advice, even if it was only for a bandage or ointment. Her careful, friendly, and affectionate attention to her nursing duties were deeply appreciated and brought her many friends and ardent admirers throughout her life.Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2022, at St. Augustine's Church, 7333 O'Brien Rd., Baldwinsville, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30, followed by mass.
