Jeffrey Michael Payne - June 15, 1972 - February 14, 2024

Departed: 02/14/2024 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Jeffrey Michael Payne
Jeff Payne came into the world while his dad was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany on a hot summer day, June 15, 1972. He lived there as an infant, and then his family moved to Fresno, California, where he was raised along with his sister, Cheri, “Cheryl”. He held various jobs in Fresno, including IT training and working as a security guard. In 2009, he relocated to Fairbanks with his lovely daughter, Eleanor “Ellie” Ruth Payne, to be near the rest of his family.
For the last 15 years, Jeff grew to love the Alaskan ruggedness. He became a true sourdough, complete with a burly beard and large Sorel boots to clomp around town in. Jeff worked at Fred Meyer after he moved to Fairbanks. He was a friend to all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.
Jeff’s biggest and best job was being a single dad to Ellie. Raising Ellie, he poured his love out for her. Jeff also cared for his parents, Ernie and Myrna Payne, in their golden years. Jeff’s humble service to others is an example we can all follow, laying down his life for others. Jeff emulated Jesus in that way.
Jeff loved heavy metal and rock music, his favorite bands being Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Pink Floyd. The Godfather books and movies were his favorite, so in honor of Jeff, his family plans to host a Godfather movie marathon. We will make sure there is plenty of popcorn.
Jeff had a witty sense of humor and liked to raz people in a loving, prankster kind of way. After Cheri and Jeff’s dad had an illness and became blind, the kids were known to switch the salt and pepper shakers on him. He took to the habit of sniffing his saltshaker any time he wanted to use it. Cheri and Jeff always laughed uproariously about it.
Jeff is survived by his loving daughter, Ellie Payne; his devoted mother, Myrna Payne; his sister, Cheryl Wood; his brother-in-law Bill Wood; his nieces, Kiana and Angel Wood; and his nephews, Denzel and Luis Wood. He also leaves behind his uncles Michael (Nancy) and Danny (Dolly) Payne and many Payne family cousins. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Ernie Mason Payne, and grandparents, Ernest and Ruth Payne.
In Jeff’s final days, after a brief illness, he called out to the Lord and was comforted. His family prayed for his recovery. We don’t understand the mystery of why he was not healed, but we trust he now is no longer in pain. The burdens he carried are lifted and he is free.
Jeff’s passing makes us realize how precious life is. We imagine Jeff’s advice for us: Don’t let any grievance go unresolved, forgive each other's past wrongs, love one another well, and set your heart right with God. You never know when your last days are here.
As Jeff breathed his last breaths, his sister Cheri asked him to say “Hi” to their dad, who was waiting for Jeff on the other side. We could almost hear them laughing together and joking around like they always did.
Jeff passed away on February 14, surrounded by the love of his family. We were all of his Valentine’s loves that day. And he was ours.
Jeff’s favorite animal was an eagle. So, any time you see one flying high, know that Jeff is up there, soaring with the eagles.
A public viewing will be held Friday February 23, 2024 from 3-5 pm at Fairbanks Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held May 10th, 2024. The location is to be announced at a later date.

Departed: 01/03/2024 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Bob was born on April 26, 1947 to Delbert “Whitey” and Jolene Bemis in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Bob’s parents moved from Minnesota to Spokane, WA and then followed family to the Fairbanks area in the early 1950’s. After arriving in Fairbanks, the family initially lived in a home in downtown, then to the fancy new Fairview Manor apartments, then to a home on Alaska Way. He remembered fondly going to UPark Elementary school and his trips up the Salcha River. Bob’s parents moved the family back to Cohasset in 1959.
He graduated from Grand Rapids High School in 1966. After high school, Bob went back and forth from Minnesota to be near family to Alaska for work. He found jobs in Alaska fighting forest fires during the summer and trucking in preparation of the trans-Alaska pipeline.
Bob respected the hard work and responsibility that farm life offered in Minnesota, but his heart always remained Alaskan.
In 1969 he married Barbara Heinrich in Cohasset, MN. In 1970 they welcomed their first daughter, Kris to the family. After working in “The Cities” for a couple years, Bob and Barb moved to Alaska for good in 1972. In 1973, the couple welcomed their second daughter, Jennifer. Bob and Barbara later divorced.
Bob was a proud Teamster and worked in trucking most of his life. He worked long hitches up north and drove the haul road countless times for various contractors of the trans-Alaska pipeline. During his rare off time, he would always make time for his daughters. Whether it was boat rides on Birch Lake, fishing trips to Valdez or sunny vacations to Hawaii, he tried to make sure his relationship with his girls stayed strong.
Bob retired from Houston Contracting in 2004. Residing in the Goldstream area in which he loved.
His greatest joy may have been his grandkids though. He felt fortunate to have his daughter and grandsons live with him for a time and from that a close bond grew. When his granddaughter would visit, he would always make sure she got anything she wanted. He loved following the kids sports of soccer, hockey and basketball whether in person or streaming. News clippings and pictures of their successes decorated his home and refrigerator.

He is survived by his sister Sandy (Dan) Gish, sister-in-law Sherry; daughters, Kris (Chad) Roberts, Jennifer (Kevin) Peterman; grandsons Brayden Deweese and Tyler (Tana) Deweese; granddaughter Ella Roberts; and great grandson Talon Deweese; along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Chester James Sanderson - March 15, 1951 - December 26, 2023

Departed: 12/26/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Chuck Sanderson
Chuck Sanderson sadly passed away on December 26th, 2023, in Fairbanks, Alaska at the age of 72. Born in Watertown South Dakota on March 15, 1951, to Delbert Sanderson and Bernadette Sanderson (Barondeau).
It is hard to put words together about a man that was bigger than life and lived wide open. Chuck’s life started in South Dakota and ended in Fairbanks Alaksa, but his adventurous life took him all over the world. Chuck was the second of 7 siblings (all boys). In 1969 at the age of 18 Chuck left Minnesota with just enough cash for fuel and headed North to Alaska, and never turned back. For 8 years he worked 7-14’s as a truck driver for the Teamsters during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline, until he was able to start up his own auto body shop – Sandersons Auto Body in Fox Alaska which he successfully owned and operated until closing the doors in 2015, he was one of the hardest working men you ever met.
In 1975 Chuck purchased a small chunk of land on a hill of tailing piles in Fox Alaska. He built a home, a family, and a business on this property where he lived out the entirety of his life – “Home on the Rocks Ranch.” In this home he celebrated the births of both of his children, Tonya Blue Sanderson (Brewer), and Jesse James Sanderson who will miss him dearly.
Chuck had an extreme passion for hunting and fishing, and he was good at it. His name is littered through many B&C record books. His hunting and fishing adventures spanned from Florida to South Dakota through Canada, to Alaska and even Asia. A book could be written about the amazing times he has experienced. Chuck also enjoyed horses, always had a good dog by his side, and was the best at wiping out a poker game to the point you might need to borrow money from him for gas to get home. He lived by the motto of - work hard and play even harder. During his last days on earth, he was asked about reincarnation, and what he would want to come back to earth as if he had a choice. After a moment to think about his answer he replied “If I got a chance to choose, I would come back as myself. I had an amazing life. There were some ups and downs, but I got to do more than 10 men could ever dream of doing. If I had the choice I would come back and do it all over again.” Even though there are 100’s of Chuck Sanderson quotes that will live on with his family and friends one of his best pieces of advice about life that should be shared is “All you need in life is a good truck, a good horse, and a good dog. If you have those things, you have succeeded.”
Although it is sad for us that he has passed, it gives us peace knowing he was welcome at the gates of heaven by his family, great friends, the best pack string of horses a man could ask for and some really good dogs. We hope they were ready for him because there is no doubt Chuck the Rifle Man is going to give heaven some hell.
Chuck is survived and will be dearly missed by his daughter Tonya Brewer, son Jesse Sanderson, granddaughter Chloe Brewer, and brothers Gary Sanderson, Delbert Sanderson, Michael Sanderson and Robert Sanderson, and many in-laws other extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Delbert and Bernadette Sanderson and brothers Joseph Sanderson and Jeffery Sanderson.
A celebration of life will be held at the Home on the Rocks Ranch in Fox Alaska on July 6th, 2024, at 2:00pm. Address – 2057 Kaylee Lane, Fairbanks Alaska 99712.

He graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in 1969 with a degree in Engineering. After graduating, Ken briefly left Alaska to serve in the Army. Scuba diving, water skiing, antique cars, motorcycles, documentaries, bee keeping, The Bible, The Koran, heavy equipment, how to make a chain from a 2 x 2 piece of wood, how scientists were redefining the definition of “intelligence” because of a “slime” that seemed to make decisions even though it didn’t have a brain are just a few of the topics that caught his keen interest and drove his desire for
knowledge. Ken’s love of his friends and family was always evident. When his mother fell ill, he moved-in and cared for her until her passing. He was a long-time supporter of the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation in her memory. The highlights of his week were spending time visiting or having lunch with life-long Fairbanks friends, attending the weekly “Bar Association” meetings and buying as many little tomato’s at
the summer Farmer’s Market as his source could supply. His sense of humor was one that took some time to get used to, but once you did, you laughed with him instead of him at you. He was generous to a fault with a mischievous sense of fun. He will be
dearly missed by those who loved him.
In accordance with his wishes, no funeral will be held.

Matthew John Williams - June 27, 2000 - May 06, 2023

Departed: 05/06/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Matthew John Williams, 22, of North Pole, Alaska passed away unexpectedly on May 6, 2023.
Matt was born on June 27, 2000 in Fairbanks, Alaska. Matt enjoyed many hobbies including running, weightlifting, baseball, and snowboarding. His family was lucky enough that a few of these hobbies were shared passions. When Matt and his sister were kids they spent a lot of time attending local races with their dad to cheer their mom on as she ran. Eventually Matt also developed a love of running and soon it was just his sister and dad who cheered, as Matt was running with his mom. When it was too cold to run Matt turned to snowboarding. This was an activity that he frequently did with his sister and dad, with dad on skis and the two siblings on snowboards. It was a rare occasion if they ever missed a good day to hit the slopes. No matter what activity Matt pursued he was always determined to master it. Whether that be rising to the rank of Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, or being the best unicycling juggler any of us knew out of the North Pole. His wit will always be remembered. He was a quiet guy, but without fail he would have something smart to add to the conversation. His sister will definitely always be jealous of how good he was at math. From now on every time we put on our running shoes or click into the bindings of our skis and snowboards Matt will be in our hearts and minds. His family will never stop loving Matt and missing him.
Matt is survived by his Parents: Carol and Doug Williams of North Pole, Alaska. Sister: Kimberly Rose Williams of Seward, Alaska. Grandmother: Peggy Conway. Uncles and Aunts: John Conway (Denise), Peggy Sorrells(Steve), Kathleen Kohntopp(Mark), Dawn Williams, Linda Williams, Steve Williams. Cousins: Luke (Nikki) Conway, Beth (Ray) Fowler, Elizabeth Williams, Derick Schuetz, Tyler Schuetz, Corey Schuetz. He was preceded in death by Grandparents: John Conway, Jacquelyn Williams, Stan Williams. Cousin: Jake Conway
Funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1300 Peger Road Fairbanks, AK 99709, on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at 2PM.

Delores Marion Sloan - September 15, 1938 - April 09, 2023

Departed: 04/09/2023 (Fairbanks)
Obituary Preview: Delores Marion Sloan, our dearest mother, passed away peacefully early Easter morning April 9th 2023, as the sun started to rise- she went to her heavenly home above. Born in Fort Yukon, Alaska, the fifteenth child, to James Albert Carroll & Fannie Martin Carroll. Beginning at a very young age, she played on a regular basis in her mother’s bead box, where she would separate the vibrant bead colors; which likely inspired her to become the lifetime Athabascan Artistry, which includes; skin sewing, traditional parka making and most passionately, beading.
As young lady, Delores met & married Tony Paul Smaker, in 1956. The young couple relocated and welcomed two children, daughter, Brenda Carol Lee (Mark Lamoureux) and a son, Clifton Douglas Lee Smaker.
After they divorced, Delores moved home to Fort Yukon with her two young children. Some of her early jobs including owning and operating a café & then working at the 709 AC&W Squadron Air Force Site in the kitchen with several of her cousins. She also was a cook at the Sourdough Inn for many years.
Raising her children in Fort Yukon, the need grew for her to sew parkas, boots and slippers, for them to stay warm. Living in a remote village did require self-sufficiency. During the long cold winters Delores’ creativity flourished and her passion for beading grew and grew.
Delores had found love once again, in 1967, she married David Spain Sloan, as he became her greatest supporter. They were blessed to share over 46 years of marriage. They both enjoyed, traveling in their camper and loved going into Canada where they would visit with many friends & relatives. They also enjoyed their time in the summers up at their cabin in Central where they spent time with their grandchildren, Vincent David & Alyssa.
Meanwhile Delores continued to be inspired to bead. She began submitting her beadwork at the Tanana Valley Fair, and won several years of Grand Champion Prizes for her Athabascan Beadwork. To this day, the beadwork competition Athabascan beadings has grown into one of the most popular attractions at the Tanana Valley Fair. Dave provided constant encouragement for all of her beading projects. One of the highlights of Delores’ career was that she was selected to represent Alaska Natives in the receiving line of the historic visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul ll and President Ronald Reagan visit to Fairbanks, May 1984 where she had the honor to present a beaded vested stole to His Holiness and placed it around his neck. The beaded stole still resides in the Vatican today. Later she would excitedly say” I don’t think I’ll ever wash my hands again”, after all- I just touched the POPE!!
Throughout her beading career, she had taught beadwork to the Fairbanks North Star Borough Students and also University of Alaska. Delores especially enjoyed her famous Baby Belt classes @ the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage where she met many dear new friends. In addition to that she taught for many years on cruise ships for the Alaska Native Heritage Center sharing her Athabascan beadwork to tourist. In her career of beading she completed 30 baby belts. Probably most recognized is the ”Forget Me Not” baby belt which is framed and on display at the Ted Stevens International Airport. Many of Delores Sloan’s Baby Belt art pieces grace the walls of various Alaska Native corporations, Tanana Chiefs Conf., the State Capitol, the new addition of the CAIHC clinic and many private collections throughout Alaska.
Delores would attend the annual native arts and crafts shows during the annual AFN and TCC conventions, the Doyon Christmas bazaar, where she would have a table where she enjoyed connecting with other artists & friends. Beading was her passion! Her unique style is recognized and loved by many, we believe that her legacy as an amazing Athabascan Beader should inspire others to sew and find their creativity! Her charisma and ability to teach caused her to be a natural mentor to her many nieces and dear friends where she loved having them come visit so they could sew together. She would share little treasured kits of beads as this our traditional way to encourage the future generations to continue with this beautiful art.
Delores Marion Sloan is survived by her daughter, Brenda Carol Lee (Mark Lamoureux), and Clifton Douglas Lee Smaker, grandson Vinent David Lamoureux, granddaughter Alyssa Marcott (Brandon Marcott) and great grandson Beckett James. She leaves a legacy of being a great Auntie, Cousin, Sister and Friend to all, of which there are so many because Delores never met a stranger, and we will all feel her void in our lives, but are encouraged knowing that we have Heaven as our hope. We will see her again one day! Meanwhile, our mom, Delores is probably oohing and ahhhing over all the beautiful flowers in heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and funeral or memorial services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and can be a meaningful way to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, and information about their family, such as surviving relatives and predeceased loved ones. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and any notable contributions they made during their lifetime.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length than print obituaries.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include one or multiple photos of the deceased. This can help make the obituary more personal and memorable.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the most basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find guidelines on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for any associated fees.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or special formatting. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I write my own obituary before I pass away?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and legacy, and can also spare loved ones from having to write it during a difficult time.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary or limit its distribution to close friends and family.

How long are obituaries typically kept online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or publication. Some may keep them archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I edit an obituary after it has been published?

In most cases, it is possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it has been published. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and procedures.

What if I want to add additional information or stories about my loved one after the initial obituary has been published?

You can consider writing a follow-up article or tribute piece that shares more about your loved one's life and legacy. Many online platforms also allow you to add comments or guestbook entries where friends and family can share their own memories and anecdotes.

Are there any specific guidelines or regulations for writing an obituary?

While there are no strict rules governing what can be included in an obituary, it's generally considered appropriate to focus on celebrating the person's life rather than sharing sensitive or controversial information.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers in their loved one's obituary. This can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and support a cause that was important to them.

How do I handle inaccuracies or disagreements within the family when writing an obituary?

In cases where there are discrepancies or disagreements within the family regarding the content of the obituary, it's essential to approach the situation with sensitivity and respect. Consider involving multiple family members in the writing process to ensure that everyone's perspectives are represented.

What if I'm unsure about what information to include in an obituary?

What if I want to create a more non-traditional or creative type of obituary?

If you're looking to create a more unconventional or innovative type of obituary that reflects your loved one's unique personality or interests, don't be afraid to think outside the box! Consider working with a professional writer or designer who can help bring your vision to life.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?
