Ladies and gentlemen, family and friends, thank you for gathering here today to honor and remember our dear friend, Jim Fuller. A humble and gentle soul, yet an endlessly caring and inspirational presence to us all.
Jim and I first met back in 1974 at the student center in Mesa Community College. A seemingly inconsequential game of pool would be the beginning of a lifelong friendship that spanned over four decades. During that time, I had the privilege of watching Jim grow and thrive in his personal and professional life.
In the early years of our friendship, we shared many adventures, skiing at Powderhorn, riding bikes, camping, fishing on the Mesa, and shooting our guns. We forged a bond that would last a lifetime. Although life took us on different paths geographically, the connection between us remained strong, and we enjoyed many more visits and catch-ups over the years.

However, the memory that stands out the most is when I was traveling to Flagstaff to visit my daughter in college and took the opportunity to stop by Jim's house. At that time, Jim was already battling cancer, and we were both hopeful that he would overcome it. But on that visit, I learned – along with Jim's daughters and Sandy – that his cancer was terminal.
As we were all left speechless by the heartbreaking news, I can still remember the powerful embrace I shared with Jim that day. His strength and faith in the face of adversity never ceased to amaze me. As we walked hand in hand through those difficult final days, Jim faced his illness with a grace and courage that can only be admired.
In the days leading up to this memorial service, I came across a moving story that reminded me of Jim's unyielding fortitude in his final days. During the Vietnam War, the prisoners of war held in the infamous Hanoi Hilton would secretly communicate with each other on Sundays by tapping on the walls, risking torture if they were caught. Despite their grim circumstances, they would consistently recite Psalms 23, a passage which held special significance for Jim in his final days, as well: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me."
Jim's unwavering faith in the face of his own valley of the shadow of death is a testament to his strength and character. Just as those POWs held onto hope and faith during their unimaginable ordeal, Jim's trust that he would be taken care of in the afterlife, through his many discussions with his father-in-law, brought him comfort and serenity in his final months.
As we gather here today to remember and reflect on the life of Jim Fuller, may we be inspired by his bravery, his unwavering faith, and the love he had for his family and friends. Jim's memory will forever be cherished by all of us who had the honor of knowing him. Rest in peace, dear friend, and know that your legacy lives on through the lives you touched and the hearts you've inspired. May Psalm 23 remind us all of the strength and faith Jim demonstrated until the very end.
