Gerald J Banfe, Sr. - August 12, 1939 - April 11, 2024

Departed: 04/11/2024 (Haddon Heights)
Obituary Preview: Gerald John Banfe "Jerry," of Berlin, NJ and formerly of Haddonfield, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024 at the age of 84 with family and friends by his side. Jerry was born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia by his parents, Albert C. Banfe and Helen T. Banfe (nee Stretch), one of six brothers and one sister.
Jerry regarded his mother as the smartest person he ever met and would often tell stories about how he would seek her advice. He regarded his father as a hard-working provider, a man who held three jobs to support the family and never complained at all. Throughout his life, Jerry would continue to seek advice from his mom and work as hard as his dad. When Jerry dropped out of high school to help to support the family, he did so with this value of family instilled deep in his core. Jerry was exceptionally proud of the fact that he had to go to three high schools to get his G.E.D.; it was a badge of honor.
Early on, Jerry worked as a short order cook, counter-man, at Linton’s Food service, until a close friend recruited him to be a junior salesperson for SCM selling copy machines. Upon learning that the position of junior salesperson did not technically exist, Jerry suddenly had to learn how to make sales calls and sell. He learned quickly and, with family as his core value, he immediately recruited his brothers Paul, and Ed to join him at SCM as “junior” salesmen, too. The three brothers enjoyed much success with SCM and left to join a rival company, Copy-Quik, where they were joined with their brother Al. After a disagreement on the commission structure, and feeling his work was undervalued, Jerry left Copy-Quik for greener pastures. Accompanied by his family and mother, Jerry discussed names for what would become their opus. Agreeing they did not want the word “Copy” in the title, they quickly agreed on “Dupli-Fax." Fasten your seat-belts; history was about to be made.
Together, at Dupli-Fax, the family grew to include more families: Dragani, Harkin, Connolly, Rankin. Folks who weren’t family became family. Dupli-Fax grew to become its own family with Jerry leading as the CEO. Soon, the owners started spinoff companies that were logically positioned to take advantage of the types of business Dupli-Fax created Citi-Lease, Oakwood leasing, to name a couple. Other companies were created so the family could co-invest in multiple properties in Acapulco and a yacht in the Caribbean. Remembering his dissatisfaction with miserly owners who quibbled over commission structure, Jerry instead chose to share the wealth with his Dupli-Family. The family worked hard and partied harder, creating enduring memories of a lifetime. Eventually, the companies grew so large that Canon made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. The Dupli-Fax chapter was over. The next chapter was to begin.
For his next act, Jerry became an Entre-“Manure”, enjoying great success by founding “Banfe Soil and Mulch," prompting a close friend to say that Jerry was the only person he knew who could make money selling dirt to farmers. As he did with his former ventures, Jerry brought his family into run this venture, hiring Paul to do the advertising, Dan and Colleen to run the business, Kim to handle the Diamond Club. His creativity was in full bloom, creating memorable names for simple products like Magical Mushroom, and manure named Premium #2.
Throughout his work life, Jerry worked hard and played hard; he really only knew one speed and two outcomes. You could try something and succeed or you could try and fail. If it was the latter, try again but even harder. Jerry loved family and he loved fun. If you knew Jerry, you were a part of his family. It did not matter if you were related or if he met you in line while waiting at the deli. Some of his best friends were at the Wal-Mart or the Aldi. In the last weeks of his life, his nurses adored him; he was the favorite no matter where he went, constantly telling bad, and sometimes inappropriate, jokes, feeling the need to put others at ease even as he fought for his life.
Jerry is survived by Sharon (nee Connolly), his devoted wife of 44 years and his five children: Gerald John Banfe, Jr. (Kathy), Kimberly Alberta Stroemel, (Russ), Daniel Lewis Banfe (Colleen), Brett Connolly Banfe (Samantha), and Brian Andrew Banfe. Jerry is also survived by ten grandchildren who lovingly called him “Poppy:" Miller, Jerry (Francesca), Jack, Bird, Augie, Faith, Carly, Bella, Hunter, Hannah. Poppy has one great grandchild, Kai. Jerry also leaves his brothers: Albert, Paul, and Peter, his sister, Regina and his many wonderful nieces and nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews. Jerry was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas and Edward and his parents Albert and Helen.

He ensured their childhoods were enriched with baking adventures, fishing expeditions, and Easter egg hunts. He taught them how to erect treehouses, garden, and design birdfeeders. He introduced them to the thrills of old westerns and the delectability of homemade perogies topped with sauerkraut. He took them on woodland excursions to pick mushrooms and built them shelves for their bedrooms. Most importantly, though, he exemplified the value of being steadfast, always an unshakable rock for those around him.
Walter passed away peacefully on November 7th, 2023. He will be as deeply missed in death as he was loved in life. He is survived by his wife, both of his daughters, his two sons-in-law, Russ Alexander and Dr. John Fontanetta and his four grandchildren. Although gone, he will never be forgotten; his memory will survive through his grandchildren, who will go on to teach their own children how to construct forts, jar pickles, play penny poker, and rescue beached horseshoe crabs. May he rest in peace with the Lord.

Edward H Hansberry - July 26, 1923 - September 22, 2023

Departed: 09/22/2023 (Haddon Heights)
Obituary Preview: Edward H. Hansberry, age 100 of Atlantic City, NJ, a decorated WWII U.S. Marine Corps veteran, passed away September 22, 2023, after a brief stay in AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth “Bette” (nee Schilling) in 1997 and is survived by their 3 children, Bonnie (Rich) Tyson, Colleen (the late Jeff) Banasz and Brian (Denise) Hansberry; grandchildren: Jeffrey (Tara) Banasz, Lauren (Jeffrey, ‘Murph”) McCarthy, Jamie Hansberry, David (Paige) Hansberry, Tim (Sibelle) Hansberry, Mark (Kiran) Hansberry and Jenny (Katherine) Hansberry; 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Ed Hansberry was born in Atlantic City, attended area schools, was hardworking and had a passion for baseball. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and entered the Pacific theater where he saw action on Eastern New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu and Okinawa. Military honors include: 4 battle stars, Purple Heart and the Navy Cross which was received for “Extraordinary heroism while serving as Leader of an Engineer Squad.” He cleared a field of mines, 75 yards in length, crawling on hands and knees probing and uprooting hostile mines while under intense enemy machine-gun, rifle, and mortar fire to clear the path for a convoy of 1st Marine Division Sherman Tanks, contributing to the success of the Marines’ mission. He was humble about his accomplishments and often expressed: “The real heroes never come home.”
When he returned to Atlantic City in 1945, Hansberry resumed his passion for baseball, playing semi-professional ball with the Pleasantville A’s and began a 28-year career with the NJ Division of Motor Vehicles. He retired in 1975 as Senior Inspector, NJ DMV Enforcement Bureau of Highway. He enjoyed settling into his role as a husband and eventually father of three children. He was a bit of a renaissance man; he seemed to be able to do, build or fix anything; well read – often encyclopedic about information. His command of “Title 39,” the resource for motor vehicle and traffic laws in NJ, was legendary. It was common for local police and attorneys to seek information and advice from him. He was generous about helping others, whether a neighbor or stranger and supporting charities that helped veterans was important to him, and he did so by contributing to Disabled American Veterans. He loved sharing the seashore life with his family, fishing, swimming, and occasional trips to the area lakes which included great picnics. He loved homemade meatballs, especially Bette’s and all forms of pasta. For many years, the flounder he caught filled the freezer to be prepared year-round for Friday night dinners. Hands down, his favorite dessert was ice cream, which he ate every night. He appreciated good music and movies, and all sports, even participating in Golden Gloves boxing in his early years. He was a lifelong fan of the Yankees and was an early and long-time season ticket holder for the Flyers. His greatest source of pride was putting his three children through college and their success. He derived immense joy from his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
