L. Barbara Nestro - July 27, 1934 - June 24, 2022

Departed: 06/24/2022 (Alexandria)
Obituary Preview: Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, L. Barbara Nestro passed on to her eternal home to be with Jesus on June 24, 2022.  She was 87 years old, just shy of her 88th birthday.
Barbara was born on July 27, 1934 in Reading, PA, the only child of the late Francis and Emily Romdejko (Rand).  The late Arthur (PopPop) and Ida Mae (Nana) Quaintance were her dearly loved hanai father and mother.
After high school, Barbara met the love of her life, Joseph Nestro, Sr. (deceased) in 1951 when she was an usherette at the Orpheum Theater in Reading, PA.  Fred Pienta (Mom’s cousin) brought our Dad to the theater to meet her.  After the play began, all three (Fred, Mom and Dad) left the theater and went to the restaurant (Hofbrau) down the street.  Mom sat on one side of the booth and Dad tried to sit by her, but she said “no” and he ended up sitting across the table with Fred.  They all had something to eat and then Dad drove them all home in his 1950 Ford (Green Hornet).  Dad dropped off Freddie first by Pendora Park and then drove Mom the long way home to her house.  After that initial meeting, Mom and Dad began dating and the rest is history.  They had their ups and downs, but through it all stuck together.  They married in 1954 and were married for almost 60 years.  Together they raised two sons and three daughters.
Mom was proud to serve in the United States Navy during the Korean War, serving at the same time as Dad.  She worked for The Evening Star in Washington, D.C., where she had the most caring and understanding boss, Laurence Hill Green (deceased); the Childcare Center; NEPMU-SIX; and the Naval Supply Center all located at Pearl Harbor, HI; and the Defense Manpower Data Center OSD RAPIDS Office at Navy Annex/Rosslyn where she retired.
When the Navy transferred Dad to Pearl Harbor in 1970, Mom was overjoyed and thrilled—it was like she won the lottery!  They lived there for 11 years and she became an “island girl” at heart.  “Lucky You Live Hawai’i” she’d say and Hawai’i will always be her beloved home.
Mom dearly loved her family and was outgoing, young at heart, passionate in her beliefs, intelligent and instilled Christian values in her children.  She had a heart of gold and she always gave sage advice.  She enjoyed dancing, swimming, picking crabs, playing cards, bingo and board games and attending concerts, plays and shows.  She attended Elvis Presley’s practice show in Hawai’i and she swore he looked directly at her—she loved Elvis.
Mom’s primary care physician, Ulrich Prinz, MD, always provided excellent and compassionate care for over 30 years to Mom, Dad and Mom’s mother, Emily.  The Nestro ohana wants to formally acknowledge Dr. Prinz for his above and beyond dedication and care.
Barbara is survived by her five children, David (Peggy-deceased) Nestro, Andrea (UL-deceased) White, Susan (Robert) Schultz, Kristen Reed and Joseph Jr. (Melanie) Nestro; nine grandchildren (Carinsalyn, Neil, Laura, Gina, Stephen, Joseph, Nicole, JT and Michael); and five great-grandchildren (Elizabeth, Lucy, Liza, Sophia and Ailana) as well as many nieces and nephews and of course poi dogs and popoki. Mom will be forever dearly missed and remembered by all.  May she rest in peace, A Hui Hou—"until we meet again!”
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 1, 2022 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria, VA 22302. Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Barbara’s wishes were for attendees to wear crisp aloha wear/business casual attire.
Mass of Christian Burial and Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a later date followed by a Celebration of Life.
If you desire to make a memorial contribution, please consider the “Catholic COTF Fund” and mail to Fund Manager, Memorial Chapel, 101 McNair Rd, Building 480, Fort Myer VA 22211; The Military Women’s Memorial; or the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal Shrine.  Flowers are welcome.

Mary Mansfield Monzuk - January 28, 1953 - May 28, 2022

Departed: 05/28/2022 (Alexandria)
Obituary Preview: Mary was a beautiful soul. Not much of a talker, but she had a calm, soothing demeanor. She was someone you could trust. Mary sadly lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her adopted family during her teenage years. She was a cheerleader in junior high school. She had a lovely voice and was a soprano in the choir. Mary was a fabulous dancer, she could dance up a storm (she and Lou could disco like nobody's business). Mary began her career at the telephone company while attending high school and received credit for the job. She continued working with the telephone company after graduation and never missed a day of work~ and we're talking over 30 years.  Even after retirement, she found another job and continued her dedication to being a reliable employee. Mary never drove, so her loving husband Lou  was always by her side, making sure she got to work and appointments. She loved decorating her and Lou's home, not just at Christmas and Easter, but ALL of the holidays. Mary won "Best Decorations" awards from her neighborhood community.  She also had so much love and empathy for animals of any kind. For years, Mary would faithfully feed a group of feral cats that lived in a tiny patch of trees and the gutter, near Route 236. I always told her that in my next life, I wanted to come back as a stray cat and live in her back yard.  I remember once, Lou, Mary, a friend of Lou's and I went to a huge flea market in Maryland. There were a bunch of chickens or rabbits, I don't really recall, but packed tight in a small cage. She started crying for their predicament, Mary couldn't bear to see any animal suffer. I loved her so much for that. Aside from her love for animals, Mary was a big fan of the beach, and loved the sun. Lou and Mary would drive to Ocean City together, spend the day and come back in the evening, that's love.
Mary will be missed tremendously by her loving husband, Lou, and entire family. A Celebration of Life will be held at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd. Alexandria, VA 22302, on Saturday, June 11th at 1 pm.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details. They also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased's life, personality, and accomplishments.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral service, memorial contributions, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your loved ones may still want to add their own tributes and memories after you're gone.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that simply states the fact of someone's death, without including any additional biographical information. It's often used when a more detailed obituary will be published later.
