What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information about their passing and any upcoming funeral or memorial services. They can also help friends and family members process their grief and pay their respects to the deceased.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist with writing the obituary, especially if the family needs guidance or support during this difficult time.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, as well as any charitable organizations or causes that were important to the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published in. Generally, it's best to aim for a length of around 150-200 words. However, some online obituary platforms may allow for longer or more detailed tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased with their obituary. This can help bring the person to life and make the tribute more personal and meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

To submit an obituary to a newspaper, you'll typically need to contact their obituary department directly. They'll provide guidance on their submission process, including any specific requirements for content, length, and formatting. You may also need to provide payment information for any associated costs.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, there may be costs associated with publishing an obituary in a newspaper or online platform. Some funeral homes may also offer packages that include obituary publication as part of their services.

Can I write my own obituary?

What's the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice that announces a person's death and provides basic information about their life. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes and memories.

How do I find an old obituary?

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

How do I write an obituary for someone who didn't have any immediate family?

In cases where there is no immediate family, it may fall to friends or caregivers to write the obituary. Be sure to focus on celebrating the person's life and accomplishments, rather than their lack of family connections.
