Vonnye Faye Elkins - September 05, 1932 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Ada)
Obituary Preview: Vonnye Elkins, age 91 of Ada, OK entered Heaven's Gates on April 21, 2024. Vonnye Faye Dees was the baby of the family born on September 5, 1932 in North Cobb, Oklahoma to Charles and Audie (Anderson) Dees where she cherished days spent as her daddy's helper on the farm when her much older brother went off to the war. She surrendered her life to Jesus as a young teen becoming passionate that others knew Him as she did. Those teen years were spent helping Swan Lake Baptist Church, Fort Cobb, OK get it's start resulting in the blessing of seeing her parents baptized as they recommitted their lives to Christ. While working as a hospital receptionist in Carnegie, she attended a Bible study where she met Rev. Kenneth Elkins who was doing the teaching. After dating for 2 months, and a gentle nudge from God, she accepted his proposal of marriage. They were married on January 11, 1952 which unfolded 66 years of ministering as a pastor's wife to Southern Baptist Churches of Alden, Verden, Del City, Newcastle, Paul's Valley, and Ada, OK.Vonnye spent her time raising their 3 daughters, Carol, Sheryl (Jeannie), and Kenda, teaching Sunday School to a variety of age groups, as well ministering in many aspects of the church. When extra income was needed, she worked a variety of jobs including working at a jewelry store (but we suspect the items she had on hold to purchase may have been more than her paycheck). She took great pleasure in the skill of making flower arrangements learned at one of these part time jobs at a florist shop. Her daughters remember her as possessing a caregiver's heart. Though they learned from her homemaking and hostess skills, they watched her travel over 3 hours every 3 weeks for 20 years to spend a week caring for the needs of her mother and disabled older sister. A nurse working at the Assisted Living where Vonnye resided described how Vonnye would visit her at the Baptist Children's Home and the difference she made on her life even when she aged out of foster care.Vonnye, though, will most be remembered by her children for her example of personal devotion time every morning and her life being anchored through prayer. She was always available to pray with them when life was cruel or decisions had to be made. While dementia may have robbed her of some memories, it never robbed her of the assurance of her salvation or hindered the power behind her prayers.Everyone else will remember her smile and sweet attitude that lit up the room. Vonnye is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Elkins, her parents Charles and Audie Dees, her sister Floy Dees, her brother Paul Dees, her sister in law Yvonne Dees, and her nephew Paul Jr. Dees.Vonnye is survived by her daughters Carol Stanfield and Husband Doug Stanfield of Newcastle, OK, Jeannie Brown and Husband Terry Brown of Newcastle, OK, and Kenda Horne and Husband Jay Horne of Ada, OK, her grandchildren Bryan Stanfield of Greenville, SC, Chris Stanfield of Leander, TX, and Jon Askins (Shelley), Cameron Horne, and Jennifer Brown, her great-grandchildren Ben, Ethan, Mikayla Stanfield, and Ariana, Cayden, and Callan Stanfield, and Megan and Nicole Askins. Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers Doug Stanfield, Terry Brown, Jay Horne, Bryan Stanfield, Chris Stanfield, Jon Askins, and Cameron Horne.Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; And in his law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1: 1-3There will be a Funeral Service held to honor Vonnye's life on Monday, April 29th, 2024 at 1:00PM at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Ada with interment to follow at Rosedale Cemetery also in Ada. Bobby Gene Stovall - December 21, 1937 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Ada)
Obituary Preview: Bobby Gene Stovall, 86, of Ada, passed away on Friday, March 15th, 2024 in Ada. Our Gentle Cowboy was born on December 21, 1937 in rural south-central Oklahoma. A fourth child, he was born at home on ranch/dairy farm belonging to William and Imogene Stovall. Farmers and Ranchers have always been at the mercy of the weather, world conditions, and just plain bad luck. Irregular barometric pressures collided with tropical air masses dumping rainfall estimated to be as much as 165 gallons that year. US economy still reeled from after effects of World War II, as well as the Great Depression. But it was on an upswing around the small community of Sulphur. The healing Artisan mineral spring waters located in Platt National Park were reputed to provide cures for everything from the common cold to Tuberculosis and brought many hopeful tourists to the area. Our society still held the values and beliefs of our religious forebears for life role models. Television had not gained popularity but radios were standard in 80% of households with programs exemplifying honesty, unselfishness, love of country/fellow-man, kindness, generosity, and more. This was Bobby's world and he took it to heart. As a child he accepted the responsibilities of an adult in order to keep their dairy business functioning and when he was fourteen his father was murdered while working away from home. Bobby didn't hesitate, falter, or delay to take up the slack and do the work of a man to support himself and his mother. As a grown-up he was hired on at an oil refinery to make a living for his family. And there, many times he was almost burned alive, asphyxiated breathing acid, or other equally horrible things that would have caused most men to creep away. But not Bobby. He put in 45 years on that harrowing job doing shift work providing for his wife Laura Lyn and his children, JoLynn, Shelly, and David. Poor health made him retire in 2000 and even then he did not shirk the need for additional income. He was hired and joined the staff of Walmart working as a Door Greeter for another eleven years before becoming wheelchair bound. Bobby has striven to be the epitome of good character all his life. As you ride the peaceful hills and valleys of heaven Gentle Cowboy, we will miss you!Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 1:30PM at the Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ada. Visitation will be held at Phillips Funeral Home in Ada on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 5:00 PM.

Obituary Preview: Kenneth Ray ("Ken") Johnson was born on May 4, 1940, in Lexington, Oklahoma, and he passed away peacefully at his home in Ada, Oklahoma on February 29, 2024. Ken was the son of Otis Oclea Johnson and Willene Clara Johnson. Ken grew up in Norman, Oklahoma, where he attended Lincoln Grade School, Norman Junior High, and Norman Senior High School, graduating from the latter in 1958. Ken received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1963, followed by a Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma School of Law in 1965. Ken married his beloved wife and lifelong best friend June Riede Johnson in 1962. They celebrated 61 wedding anniversaries prior to Ken's passing. Following completion of law school, Ken and June moved to Ada, where Ken took a job as an attorney at Conn Mayhue & Kerr and June took a job as a teller at The First National Bank of Ada. Ken and June had two sons, Timothy Neil Johnson, born in 1968, and Kirk Edward Johnson, born in 1972. Kirk preceded Ken in death in 2022. Ken practiced law in Ada for over 50 years, during which time he had a noteworthy impact on the Ada community. He was named the Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year in 1969 by the Oklahoma Bar Association. Ken started his own law firm in the early 1970's in partnership with his good friend George B. Thompson. The firm was later known as Johnson & Nimmo, in recognition of named partner David Nimmo. Ken had a dynamic law practice in Ada for many years. Ken was a hard-working, dedicated attorney who vigorously represented his clients, many of whom became his close friends. In addition to representing clients, Ken was extremely active within the Ada community. Among other things, Ken served as the attorney for the Ada School District and he served on the Board of Directors of First National/Vision Bank, Valley View Hospital, the Ada Boys' Club, the Ada Industrial Development Corporation, and the Ada Jobs Foundation. Ken was an adjunct professor who taught Business Law at East Central State University.Ken's obituary would be incomplete without mention of Ken's lifelong favorite past time - golf. Ken lived and breathed the game for most of his life. To the members of the "Little Game" and his other golf buddies, you know who you are. Ken loved you. He loved the matches on the weekends, he loved the banter, he loved the competition. Thanks to each of you. While he was fortunate to play some of the greatest courses on the planet, Oak Hills in Ada was his home course and he never grew tired of playing it. He and June built a house on Winged Foot Drive simply to be across the street from the golf course. Equally important to Ken was his morning coffee group, who often met in Ken's offices. Similar to golf, the coffee group gave Ken a reason to spend time with his beloved friends, who often had to put up with Ken's teasing, story-telling, his biased sports opinions, and his constant bragging about his grandchildren. Ken loved you all. Finally, and most importantly, Ken was a fantastic husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and family member. He was caring, warm, generous, loyal, and he never hesitated to help someone in times of need. One of his great nephew's described Ken as the "family shepherd," a role he played for many of us. Just like his close friends and golf buddies, his family members were not spared from Ken's never ending sense of humor and his constant, good-natured teasing. Ken was a reliable source for a wisecrack, a funny story, a joke, or teasing. He was a great story-teller and would often capture an audience with stories of his past experiences. Ken will be greatly missed.
