Martha J. (Sampson) Gruber, age 94, died peacefully at Longwood of Oakmont (Pittsburgh, PA) on April 18, 2022. She is survived by son Michael (Mary Phan) Gruber of Pittsburgh; daughter Lisa (Steven) Douridas of Florida; grandchildren Leslie (Sean) Steele, Emily (Jeremy Friedman) Phan-Gruber, Heather Douridas, Joshua (Shannon Deep) Phan-Gruber; three great grandchildren Noah and Bethany Steele and Charlie Friedman.  For 71 years, Martha was the devoted wife of Howard S. Gruber who preceded her in death by 4 years. She was the oldest of eight children born to Vantzel and Verna Sampson. Martha is survived by sisters Patricia Miller, Katie Westjohn, Wilma (Jerry) Neeley, and Carol (Richey) Sharrett. She was predeceased in death by her parents and siblings Mary Priore, Robert Sampson, and Ann Lambert and by 6 sisters-in-law and 8 brothers-in-law. Martha was born in Columbus, Ohio but grew up in southern Ohio communities along the Ohio River. Martha and Howard lived in Canal Winchester, Ohio for over 45 years and enjoyed retirement in Florida before moving to Pittsburgh in 2014.  Quiet and reserved, Martha showed her love by sharing her talents and time. She was an outstanding seamstress who created fashionable clothing for herself and her family. Martha shared this talent with nieces, sewing their wedding dresses and other apparel.  As the family matriarch, Martha hosted many extended family gatherings allowing siblings to reconnect and cousins to bond. Martha loved to travel and was known to jump in the car and drive solo across the country to visit relatives. She and Howard traveled to all 50 states and especially loved the beaches of Hawaii and the mountains of Alaska.  A Memorial Service will be held in Columbus at a future date. Dorothy Mae Hamilton of Vincentian Schenley Gardens in Pittsburgh, age 84, entered into eternal life on April 15th, 2022. Dottie was born on March 12, 1938 in Pittsburgh to her parents, Francis Alexander Hamilton and Anna Hamilton (nee Steve), who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Peabody High School in East Liberty and a lifelong member of Sacred Heart parish. Dottie worked for over 50 years as a title clerk in the automotive industry; she spent most of her career at Don Allen Chevrolet in Shadyside. She was known for her quick wit, affable nature and her deep love and affection for her sister and her two nephews. Dottie was a jet setter in her younger years and enjoyed trips to the casinos and vacations with her sister and nephews. In her later years, she absolutely loved doing crossword puzzles... and never ceased to share her distain for gravy! She is survived by her beloved sister, Elizabeth DeCarolis and her devoted nephew, Matthew Matejko and his wife, Rev. Karol Van Wulfen. She leaves behind many dear friends in the Pittsburgh area and beyond, especially Nancy, Shirley, Bobby and others, who helped to provide care and support in more recent years. Her nephew, Stephen F. Matejko, preceded her in death as did her beloved dog, Bumper Morgan. May she rest in peace and may her memory be a blessing. A memorial service will be held a later date. Age 88, a longtime resident of Verona died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 23, 2021. Spiro was born to John and Efthasia (Krampovitis) Pappas and was raised in Bridgeport, CT and later attended the Pallicary Vedova Prep School. In 1955, Spiro graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with degrees in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering and moved to Los Angeles to enter the management training program at Lockheed. Spiro was eager to travel the world and left his position with Lockheed to enlist in the Marine Corps, serving on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea. After his service to our nation, he moved back east to work with helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky. Over the course of his career, Spiro was awarded several U.S. patents, representing a wide range of engineering innovations. While employed at Contraves, he was the Chief Engineer of numerous projects including the Subaru Telescope, still in operation at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. Earlier, while living in Philadelphia, Spiro met Georgia (Viores) who would become his wife “the story of his life” for 54 years. Spiro was always quick to note that marrying her was the best decision he ever made. He is survived by his devoted wife, Georgia, and his caring daughters, Cynthia Hollister (Carl) of Mason, Ohio; Pamela Pappas of Tampa, Florida; “Papou” also leaves his loving granddaughter, Alexandra Hollister. He is also survived by his brother, James (Sylvia) of Parsippany, New Jersey, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care that Spiro received from Bridges Hospice over the last months. Family and friends will be received following CDC COVID-19 guidelines on Tuesday, December 28, 2021, from 4-7p.m., at English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139.
